To improve PS5 or PS4 Remote Play, first confirm setup, then test upload and download speed, reduce Wi-Fi congestion, and check whether the problem is local Wi-Fi or the route through your router, ISP, or mobile carrier. PlayStation Support’s guidance is at least 5 Mbps upload and download, with 15 Mbps in both directions recommended for best performance. Meeting those figures does not guarantee smooth play: signal quality, competing traffic, NAT restrictions, and service or app issues can also affect a session.
Start with setup before changing network settings
A configuration problem can look like a connection problem. Check the console and app before adjusting your router.
- Update and sign in. Install the latest available system software on the PS5 or PS4 and update the Remote Play app. Sign in to the same PlayStation account on the console and the device running Remote Play.
- Enable Remote Play on the console. On PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- Allow the console to wake from rest mode, if needed. On PS5, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning On PS5 from Network.
- Set up the PS4 equivalent. On PS4, enable Remote Play under Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings. Activate the console as your primary PS4, and enable the corresponding rest-mode options to stay connected to the internet and allow network startup.
- Pair locally if the console is not found. Sony’s setup guidance says to register the device while it and the console are on the same network.
The exact labels can vary with system software and region. If Remote Play is already enabled and the console is found, continue to connection testing rather than repeating setup.

Check whether the connection meets Sony’s speed guidance
Run a connection test on the console and a speed test on the device you use for Remote Play. Sony’s current support guidance lists a minimum of 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download, and recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download for best performance. These are service recommendations, not a guarantee based on a single speed-test result.

Test the device on the same connection and in the same location where you play. A fast result at the router or on another device may not reflect the connection the Remote Play client actually gets. If you play over mobile data, check the carrier signal and your data allowance; performance and availability depend on carrier and network conditions.
Improve Wi-Fi and reduce competing traffic
- Pause downloads and other high-bandwidth activity. Stop console or device downloads and, if possible, pause other heavy household network use while you test.
- Try 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Sony recommends connecting the Remote Play device over 5 GHz Wi-Fi. The band may improve the local wireless link, but actual results depend on the router, signal, and environment.
- Check whether Wi-Fi works well on other devices. If several devices have trouble, the issue may be with the local wireless network rather than Remote Play alone.
- Try Ethernet for PC or Mac. Sony recommends testing a wired connection on PC or Mac when wireless play is problematic. This changes the device-to-router link; it does not by itself fix an ISP, carrier, routing, or NAT issue.
- Test closer to the router if the signal is weak. Retest in a location with a stronger Wi-Fi signal. A better local signal will not necessarily resolve problems beyond the home network.
Separate local Wi-Fi trouble from router, ISP, or carrier trouble
Remote Play can remain unstable even when a speed test looks adequate. If setup is correct, the device and console meet Sony’s speed guidance, and Wi-Fi congestion has been reduced, the remaining issue may involve NAT or other router or network restrictions.

Sony says Remote Play uses UDP port 8572 and notes that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play. Its support guidance suggests opening that port on the router, but port forwarding is an advanced, network-specific change—not a universal lag fix. If you are unfamiliar with router settings, ask your ISP, router manufacturer, or mobile carrier for help. Do not disable the firewall broadly as a troubleshooting shortcut.
Lower video resolution when the image struggles
Sony documents resolution options for the PS4 Remote Play app: 360p, 540p, or 720p, with an exclusion for PS4 Pro noted in its guidance. If the image is struggling to arrive smoothly, try a lower resolution and see whether the session improves. The available control depends on platform and client; Sony’s cited guidance does not establish the same option for every Remote Play app, nor does it quantify a latency improvement.

Check for app, device, and service issues
- Restart the Remote Play app and the device, then test again.
- Make sure the app is current; reinstall it if restarting and updating do not help.
- If sign-in fails, check PlayStation Network status.
- On PC or Mac, check whether antivirus software is blocking the Remote Play app.
If the problem persists after these checks, note whether it happens on one device or across devices, on Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and on home internet or mobile data. That distinction can help your ISP, router maker, or carrier identify where to investigate.

Not every title or console activity is compatible with Remote Play. Some games that require PS VR, PS VR2, or PlayStation Camera cannot be played this way, and certain simultaneous activities can prevent a Remote Play session. If the connection works in other games but not one particular title or situation, check compatibility before treating it as a network fault.
