You can usually extend a Pixel’s time between charges without buying another phone by finding the actual drain, reducing unnecessary screen and background activity, using Battery Saver only when needed, and keeping the battery cool. Start with Settings > Battery > Battery usage instead of changing every setting at once. The right fix depends on your Pixel model, Android version, apps, mobile coverage, temperature and battery condition.
Start by finding what is using the power
A battery-saving setting cannot compensate for an app, display feature or poor-signal connection that is consuming most of the energy. Diagnose first, then change the setting connected to the measured drain.
Check app and system use
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Review the app list for unusually high consumption, especially background use.
- If your software offers separate views, switch between app and system usage. This helps distinguish an individual app from display, mobile network, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or another system component.
- Tap a high-use app to inspect its battery settings. Leave the setting at Optimized for most apps unless the usage pattern gives you a specific reason to restrict it.
Look for a pattern rather than reacting to the first item in the list. An app that you actively used for hours may legitimately rank high, while an app with unexpectedly high background use deserves closer attention. A system category may point to display time, radio activity or another phone-wide behavior rather than a defective application.

Restrict background activity only where it is appropriate. An aggressively restricted messaging, calendar or security app may stop delivering timely notifications or updates. Do not force-stop essential system services simply because they appear in a usage list. After making a change, return to Battery usage later and check whether the same source remains unusually high.

Run Battery diagnostics on supported Pixels
Pixel 6 and later include a diagnostic path for unusually fast drain: Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly. Menu names can vary by Android release. Use the result as a troubleshooting clue, not as a promise that one tap will repair the battery.
Reduce display power without making the phone unpleasant to use
The display is often a major source of everyday consumption because it is active whenever you are reading, browsing or watching video. Make one change at a time so you can tell which trade-off suits you.
Brightness and Adaptive brightness
- Lower the brightness manually when you are indoors or in shade.
- Turn on Adaptive brightness so the phone can adjust brightness to ambient light instead of remaining brighter than necessary.
- When testing battery changes, remember that an unusually bright screen can hide the benefit of other optimizations.
Screen timeout
Set a shorter screen timeout in the display settings. A timeout that keeps the screen lit for several minutes after you put the phone down wastes power repeatedly throughout the day. Choose the shortest interval that does not interrupt reading or work. If the drain is mostly happening while the screen is on, timeout and brightness are more relevant than restricting an app that you barely use.
Always-on Display, live wallpapers and Smooth Display
Consider disabling Always-on Display if you do not need persistent clock or notification information. Live wallpapers can use more power than a static image. On models that offer Smooth Display, turning it off can reduce refresh-related consumption at the cost of less fluid scrolling. These controls and their exact labels vary by Pixel model and Android version, so an option missing from your phone is not necessarily a fault.
Keep adaptive battery controls enabled
Adaptive Battery needs time to learn
Pixel’s Adaptive Battery learns which apps you use and how often you use them, then attempts to limit unnecessary work from less important apps. Google says learning can take a few weeks after setting up a phone or completing a factory reset. During that period, behavior may change gradually rather than immediately.
The trade-off is that Adaptive Battery can reduce performance for infrequently used apps or delay some notifications. That is expected behavior, not evidence that the feature is broken. Keep it enabled unless a particular app’s delayed work is more important than the savings. A phone that was reset or newly set up should not be judged solely by its first day of battery behavior.
Review, rather than disable, app optimization
Battery optimization is a per-app control. Leave most apps optimized, then make an exception only when you have identified a real notification or background-task problem. If an app is responsible for conspicuous background use, open its battery page and choose a more restrictive option where the consequence is acceptable. Recheck Battery usage afterward to see whether the change addressed the measured drain.

There is no benefit in disabling optimization for every app “just in case.” Doing so can permit more background work without fixing the source you actually observed. Conversely, restricting every app can make updates or alerts late. Match the setting to the app’s purpose and to the drain shown on your phone.
Control connectivity and background activity
Turn off hotspot and tethering when finished
A hotspot keeps the phone’s radio active and may also make it work harder to maintain a connection for another device. Turn off tethering as soon as you no longer need it. This is a targeted change; there is no need to disable every connection during ordinary use.
Use Adaptive connectivity where available
Adaptive connectivity is available on Pixel 4a (5G) and later, including Pixel Fold, although carrier limitations may apply in the United States. It can help the phone choose a suitable connection instead of maintaining higher-power connectivity unnecessarily. The setting’s availability and location can differ by model, Android version and carrier. If you cannot find it, your model, software or carrier may not support the control.
Account for weak cellular coverage
In areas with poor signal, the phone may spend more energy searching for or maintaining service. If you do not need cellular connectivity temporarily, Airplane mode can prevent that radio work. Airplane mode also stops or limits calls, mobile data and some location-dependent functions, so it is a situational measure rather than a permanent battery setting.
Do not turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or mobile service by default. First use Battery usage to see whether connectivity is actually a significant consumer. A connection that you need for notifications, calls or location may be worth the modest power cost, while an unused hotspot is an easy target.
Use Battery Saver when you need to reach a charger
Battery Saver is designed to stretch the charge that remains, not to improve the battery’s long-term capacity. Extreme Battery Saver applies stronger restrictions. Both can alter background activity, connectivity and app behavior, so enable them when the immediate goal is to keep the phone running until you can recharge.
Turn it on for a low-charge situation
Open the Battery settings or Quick Settings and enable Battery Saver. The exact controls differ by Android version. If the phone offers Extreme Battery Saver, use it only when the additional restrictions are acceptable; it may pause more apps and reduce normal background work. Check that important communication or navigation functions still behave as you need before relying on the mode.

Stop the activities that consume the most power
Battery Saver cannot make an extended high-load session efficient. While trying to reach a charger, limit:

- Prolonged turn-by-turn navigation or other GPS-heavy use
- Video streaming and long video playback
- Graphics-heavy games
- Hotspot or tethering
- Camera sessions, especially extended video recording
- Moving calls and other activities that keep the screen, modem or processor busy
- Any other continuous, demanding app session
If you do not need calls, data or location, Airplane mode may extend the remaining charge, but it removes those connectivity features until you turn them back on. Do not treat it as a universal recommendation for normal daily use. Battery Saver is most useful when paired with less demanding behavior, not as permission to continue a long GPS, video or gaming session unchanged.
Protect the battery from heat
Temperature affects both immediate runtime and long-term battery health. Google’s battery-care guidance states: “Your battery will drain much faster when it’s hot, even if you’re not using it.” A hot battery can therefore lose charge while the phone appears idle, and repeated heat can damage it.
- Move the phone out of direct sun and hot cars.
- Stop demanding apps if the phone becomes noticeably hot.
- Avoid leaving a warm phone charging longer than necessary.
- Let the device cool naturally before resuming intensive use.
Heat can come from the environment, intensive games, navigation, video recording, poor cellular conditions or charging. If the phone repeatedly becomes hot during light use, inspect Battery usage and diagnostics instead of assuming a normal setting is responsible. Keeping the phone cool can improve the charge you get today and reduce stress on the battery over time.
Choose the right charging optimization
Charging optimization addresses battery health over time; it does not add more energy to the current day’s charge. Supported Pixels offer two different approaches.

Enable the setting that matches your routine
Open Settings > Battery > Charging optimization and select Adaptive Charging or the 80% limit when your model offers it. Use the 80% limit when preserving long-term health is more important than maximum same-day runtime. Turn it off temporarily when a full charge is more useful, such as before a long trip.
Adaptive Charging is not a faster-charging mode. It changes when the final portion of the charge happens. Its learning period is approximately 14 days, and an irregular schedule or travel can keep it from activating consistently. The 80% limit is the clearer choice when your phone normally ends the day with plenty of charge and you want to reduce time spent at a high state of charge. It is the less suitable choice when you regularly need every available percentage before the next outlet.

Neither option requires regularly draining the phone from full to empty. Google says owners do not need full-to-empty cycles to “teach” the battery its capacity. Avoid creating unnecessary deep-discharge cycles as a battery-care ritual.
Allow for software updates and a new setup to settle
After an Android update, the phone may download, index and optimize software in the background. Google’s official guidance says, “After a software update, it’s normal for your Pixel battery to drain a little more than usual.” Increased use for a short period can therefore be normal.
Adaptive Battery may also need a few weeks after initial setup or a factory reset. Give the phone time to settle, but do not dismiss persistent abnormal drain indefinitely. If the problem continues beyond several days after an update, inspect app and system usage, run Battery diagnostics where available, and investigate the highest measured source. A software update can explain a temporary change, but it is not proof that every ongoing drain will resolve on its own.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Record the symptom. Note whether the drain happens during screen use, overnight idle time, charging, navigation or a particular app.
- Open Battery usage. Compare app and system views and identify the largest unusual consumer.
- Apply one targeted change. Examples include restricting a high-background-use app, lowering brightness, shortening timeout or disabling a hotspot.
- Use Battery Saver for urgent situations. Combine it with shorter, less demanding sessions rather than expecting it to offset continuous GPS, video or gaming.
- Check temperature. Move the device to a cooler environment and stop intensive work if it is hot.
- Run diagnostics. On Pixel 6 and later, use Battery diagnostics for “Battery draining too quickly.”
- Reassess after normal use. A single unusual day, a software update or a new setup can distort the pattern. Persistent high drain after those conditions pass deserves further app-level investigation.
Match the fix to the symptom
If the phone loses charge mainly while you are actively using it, start with brightness, screen timeout, Always-on Display, Smooth Display and demanding activities. If it loses charge while idle, inspect background app use, hotspot status, signal conditions and heat. If navigation, video recording or gaming causes a rapid drop, reduce the length of those sessions and use Battery Saver only as additional help. If the change began immediately after an update or reset, allow the documented settling period while still watching Battery usage for a clearly abnormal app.
This symptom-based approach avoids a common mistake: applying a setting that cannot affect the source. An 80% charging limit does not add runtime to today’s charge, and turning off a visual feature will not solve a runaway background app. The usage screen tells you which category deserves attention first.

There is no universal percentage or number of extra minutes that Google promises for these settings. Actual results vary with Pixel model, Android version, apps, mobile coverage, screen brightness, temperature and battery condition. Google’s laboratory battery figures use specified profiles and settings; they are estimates, and actual personal battery life may be lower.
A charger lets you recharge but does not reduce per-charge drain. A power bank supplies another charge but does not make the phone more efficient. Replacing the battery may address physical wear, but it does not meet the goal of improving the existing phone without replacement. For that goal, diagnosis and targeted settings changes are the evidence-based route.

- Check Settings > Battery > Battery usage before making broad changes.
- Leave Adaptive Battery and app optimization enabled for most apps.
- Use Adaptive brightness, lower brightness when practical and shorten screen timeout.
- Consider disabling Always-on Display, live wallpapers or Smooth Display if their convenience is not worth the power use.
- Turn off hotspot and tethering when finished.
- Use Battery Saver or Extreme Battery Saver when you need to reach a charger, and avoid prolonged intensive tasks.
- Keep the phone cool, especially while charging or using GPS, video and demanding games.
- Choose Adaptive Charging or the 80% limit according to your charging routine and daily energy needs.
- After an update or factory reset, allow time for software optimization while still investigating drain that remains unusually high.

Pixel controls vary by model, Android version and carrier. Smooth Display, Adaptive connectivity, Battery diagnostics and the 80% limit are not available in exactly the same form on every Pixel. Missing a control does not necessarily indicate a fault.
