A Pixel can use more power for a short period after an Android update while it downloads files and optimizes the new software. Let that process settle, then inspect Settings > Battery > Battery usage, keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization enabled, reduce display and background activity, restart the phone, and install pending app updates. If unusual drain continues for more than a few days, contact Google rather than assuming it will resolve on a guaranteed schedule. Google’s Pixel support guidance describes the post-update increase as normal during this transition.
Why battery drain can increase after an Android update
Immediately after an update, the phone may still be downloading components, rebuilding indexes, optimizing applications and completing other background work. Google states: “After a software update, it’s normal for your Pixel battery to drain a little more than usual.” This explanation applies to the settling period, not to unlimited battery loss weeks later.
There is no universal recovery time. Google advises seeking help if unusual drain continues after a few days, but it does not promise that every Pixel will return to its previous consumption on a particular day. Your model, Android release, update date, network conditions and installed apps all affect the pattern.

It is also useful to separate two questions: whether the phone is using more power than usual, and what is using it. A battery percentage alone cannot answer the second question. The Battery usage screen can help identify whether the apparent change lines up with an app, system activity, screen use or another feature. Avoid concluding that the Android update itself is defective solely because the drain began around the same time.
1. Watch the pattern for a short settling period
For the first few days after the update, charge the phone normally and note whether the drain is concentrated during periods when the Pixel is actively being used or continues while it is idle. A temporary increase that gradually eases is consistent with the download and optimization work described by Google.
- Keep the phone connected to a reliable Wi-Fi network when practical so large update-related downloads do not repeatedly use cellular data.
- Check whether the phone is unusually warm while it is idle. Heat and constant activity are clues that something is still running in the background.
- Do not judge the update from a single percentage reading. Look for a pattern over several charge cycles.
If the unusual behavior is still present after a few days, move through the checks below and contact Google support if the problem remains. Do not label the update a confirmed bug without evidence tied to your exact Pixel model and release.

It does not specify a percentage of extra drain that is acceptable, nor a fixed number of hours or charge cycles by which every phone should recover. Treat “a few days” as a practical point to reassess, not a guarantee that the battery will be back to normal by a particular date.
Keep your observations simple and comparable. Note whether the phone was mostly idle or actively used, and whether the same activity appears in Battery usage. A reading taken after a day of navigation or video use is not directly comparable to one after a mostly idle day. The goal is to spot a repeatable change, not to diagnose the issue from one momentary drop.
2. Find the app or system process using the charge
Pixel’s Battery usage screen is the most useful first diagnostic because it separates downloaded apps from Android system activity.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery usage.
- Review View by apps. On versions that offer it, also open View by systems.
- Look for an app or system category that is disproportionately high during the period in which the battery fell.
Labels can differ by Android release. Usage figures may be rounded and may not add up to exactly 100 percent, so treat them as indicators rather than laboratory measurements. Compare the leading entries with what you actually used: a navigation app used for an hour should appear, while a rarely opened app consuming substantial background power deserves inspection. Google explains these limits in its battery-drain troubleshooting instructions.
Look at the time period selected on the screen as well as the ranking. A high entry may reflect substantial use during that interval rather than a new fault. If the page shows a view by apps and a view by systems, compare both instead of treating the first list as the whole explanation. Some system activity is part of running Android; a system category appearing high does not, by itself, tell you that a component has failed.
Use the screen to make one targeted change at a time. If you adjust an app’s background setting, remove an app, and disable several display features all at once, it becomes harder to tell which change mattered. Make a note of the original setting and check the battery pattern again during ordinary use.
Review a high-use downloaded app
Tap the app in Battery usage to open its battery settings. If the app offers a background-use choice, leave it at Optimized for ordinary use. Optimization lets Android restrict background work when appropriate without disabling the app’s normal functions.

- Close or uninstall an app you no longer need.
- Force-stop a clearly misbehaving third-party app temporarily, then observe whether the pattern changes.
Do not force-stop essential services simply because they appear in the list. Services such as Google Play services support core phone functions; stopping them can cause failures without solving the underlying drain.
Before removing an app, consider whether you rely on its notifications or background activity. Optimization is the normal setting for most apps, but some apps have a reason to perform work in the background. If you change that behavior, check whether the app still does what you need, then compare battery use. A one-time spike after opening or updating an app is not enough on its own to establish that it is the ongoing cause.
Interpret system entries carefully
System categories can rise after an update because Android is completing maintenance work. A high system entry by itself does not identify a fault. Check whether the activity declines after the settling period, and use the remaining steps before considering a reset or repair.
If an unfamiliar system entry is prominent, record its name and the time range rather than trying to stop it. The Battery usage display is intended to show where power went; it does not make every listed process safe to disable. If the activity remains unusual after a few days, include the entry in your notes for Google support.
3. Keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization enabled
Adaptive Battery learns which apps you use most and can reduce activity from apps you use less often. Per-app battery optimization applies similar controls at the app level. Google recommends leaving these features enabled unless you have a specific compatibility reason to change them.
- Open Settings and go to the battery section.
- Find Adaptive Battery and make sure it is on.
- Open the battery-optimization or per-app battery settings if your Android version shows them.
- For normal apps, select Optimized rather than unrestricted background activity.
The exact menu placement and wording vary between Android releases and Pixel generations. If an app must perform continuous background work for a reason you understand, you can make an exception for that app, but unrestricted access generally permits more background drain.
These settings are worth checking after an update because a menu may have moved or an app-specific choice may need review. They are not a switch that instantly repairs a battery, and they do not replace checking Battery usage. Keep the adaptive features on, then look for an app that appears to be using more power than its role and your actual use would suggest.
If you make a per-app exception for a specific function, keep it limited to the app that needs it rather than changing optimization globally. If the app no longer needs unrestricted activity, return it to Optimized and observe whether its required functions continue to work.
4. Reduce display power without disabling useful features blindly
The display is often a large consumer during active use. These changes lower demand without altering the update itself:

- Lower screen brightness or enable adaptive brightness if it suits your use.
- Shorten Screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when you put the phone down.
- Try Dark theme, especially if you prefer it in low-light environments.
- Turn off Always-on Display if your model offers it and you do not need persistent lock-screen information.
- Turn off Smooth Display if it is available and you accept a less fluid refresh experience.
These options are trade-offs, not diagnostic proof. A setting may be absent on your Pixel or may be named differently after an Android release. Change one or two settings at a time so you can tell which trade-off helps your usage.
Choose the changes that match your habits. Lower brightness and a shorter timeout can reduce how long or intensely the screen is active; Dark theme may be preferable in dim surroundings. Turning off Always-on Display means giving up persistent lock-screen information, while turning off Smooth Display can make motion look less fluid. If you dislike the result, restore the feature rather than sacrificing a function you value without evidence that it is helping.
Do not expect a display setting to explain drain that occurs mostly while the phone is idle. In that case, give more attention to background use and the entries in Battery usage. Conversely, if the screen is active for much of the day, display changes are a reasonable first adjustment alongside the app and system checks.
5. Stop connectivity features when you are not using them
Hotspot and tethering can keep the radio active and make the phone work harder, particularly when another device is connected. Turn off the hotspot as soon as you finish sharing the connection. Apply the same principle to other high-drain features shown in your quick settings or network settings: leave them on when needed, but do not let them run continuously by accident.
Do not disable essential connectivity as a blanket fix. If the Battery usage page shows that a particular radio or network activity is responsible, test the relevant setting for a complete period of normal use and compare the result.
Make this a targeted check, not a routine of switching off every wireless feature. A feature that you need should remain available; the useful question is whether hotspot or another high-drain function has been left active unnecessarily. If turning a feature off does not change the pattern, restore it and continue with the other checks.
6. Restart the Pixel and finish all pending updates
A restart clears temporary processes that may have become stuck during the upgrade.

- Tap Restart and allow the Pixel to boot fully.
- Open Settings > System > Software update and install any available Pixel update.
- Open Google Play, tap your profile picture, choose Manage apps & device, and install pending app updates.
Menu labels can change, but the goal is the same: bring both Android and the applications running on it to their current versions. An outdated app may behave poorly on a newly updated system.
After restarting, allow the phone to return to normal use before deciding whether it helped. A restart is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that the update-related work or an app problem has ended. Checking both system software and Google Play app updates matters: the phone’s operating system and the apps that run on it are separate parts of the overall setup.
7. Use built-in battery diagnostics when your model supports it
Google lists Battery diagnostics as available on Pixel 6 and later. If your Pixel is in that generation or newer, open Settings > Battery and look for a diagnostics option; the exact location and wording depend on the Android version.

Follow the checks shown by the tool and record any warning or recommendation. Diagnostics can help distinguish ordinary consumption from a battery or software condition that needs support, but the absence of a warning does not prove that every app is behaving correctly.
For earlier Pixel models, use the Battery usage screen and the support path instead. Do not infer that a missing diagnostics menu means the phone is defective; it may simply be outside the supported model range described by Google’s battery-level guidance.
If diagnostics shows a battery warning, follow the tool’s recommendation and contact Google or an authorized repair provider as appropriate. A warning is a different situation from a temporary increase after an update: it merits attention to the battery condition rather than further display tweaks alone. If no warning appears but unusual drain persists, support can still help; diagnostics is one check, not the only route to assistance.
8. Decide when the drain is no longer ordinary
Contact Google support when unusual drain continues after a few days or when the phone shows a serious symptom such as rapid loss while idle, repeated overheating, unexpected shutdowns or a battery warning. Before contacting support, gather:
- Pixel model and Android version.
- Date the update installed and the region in which the phone is used.
- Approximate idle and active drain pattern.
- Screenshots or notes from Battery usage, including the time range selected.
- Whether a restart, app updates and the settings changes above altered the behavior.
This information gives support a reproducible timeline instead of a single percentage reading. Google’s post-update instructions direct users to support when unusual drain persists beyond the initial few days.

Include the app or system entries that stand out, but do not present rounded usage figures as exact measurements. Mention whether a suggested setting is unavailable on your model, and whether changing an app’s background behavior affected a function you rely on. A concise account of what changed, when it began and what you tested is more useful than assuming the update caused a particular bug.
Google’s battery-level guidance also points users toward authorized repair for a battery warning indicator. If you have that warning, follow the device’s guidance rather than buying a battery or attempting a repair based only on post-update drain. If there is no warning, but the unusual behavior remains after a few days, contact support for the next step.

A factory reset removes local data and installed apps. It is not a first-line battery test, and it can make diagnosis harder if you have not recorded which apps and settings were involved. Google warns that a reset erases the phone and advises backing up first.
Use a reset only after you understand the consequences, have a verified backup and have followed appropriate support guidance. If the battery problem is caused by a particular app, display choice or unresolved software issue, wiping the phone may not address the cause.

Before taking any reset step, make sure you know how to restore your data and that the backup you need is complete. A reset also removes installed apps, so it is not a low-risk way to test whether one app is responsible. Review Battery usage, install updates, restart and contact Google if the issue persists before considering an action that erases the device.

What these steps can—and cannot—tell you
Battery settings can reduce avoidable consumption and reveal an app that changed behavior after the update. They cannot prove that the update itself contains a bug, and they cannot guarantee a particular battery percentage or optimization timeline. Feature availability also differs by Pixel generation and Android version, so use “if available on your Pixel” as the rule for options such as Smooth Display, Always-on Display and Battery diagnostics.

There is no universal setting to switch off that fixes every post-update battery complaint. This is why the order matters: start with reversible checks, preserve normal optimization, and reserve disruptive steps such as a factory reset for later guidance.
