The first performance setting in a PS5 emulator is the compatibility check, not a graphics slider. Identify the exact emulator and game, confirm that the title is supported by that project, record a baseline, and then change one option at a time. Emulator projects expose different controls and are at very different stages of development, so a setting that helps one project may be absent or counterproductive in another.
This guide focuses on the settings documented by RPCS5, while separating them from the current status information published by SharpEmu and ShadPS5. The projects describe experimental software, and none of the settings below can make an unsupported game playable.
Start by deciding whether settings can help
Identify the emulator, game and build
Write down the emulator name, exact build or release, game title and version, host operating system, graphics card, driver version, processor, memory, resolution scale and the symptom you are seeing. Menu names differ between projects; do not apply RPCS5 instructions to SharpEmu or ShadPS5 unless that project documents an equivalent control.

RPCS5 uses project-specific status categories ranging from Playable through Nothing. A game marked as loading, booting or having major faults may not respond to normal performance tuning. Compatibility labels also change as emulator builds and game patches change.

Check project maturity
As of October 13, 2026, SharpEmu describes support as experimental. Its documentation says it can load real-game eboot.bin files, execute native CPU instructions and partially handle GPU functionality. Its stated graphics path uses Vulkan on Windows and Linux and MoltenVK on macOS. Those capabilities do not establish that a particular commercial game is playable or that a faster computer will solve an emulation defect.
ShadPS5 describes itself as still building core systems and says it is not yet playable. If your game is being tested in that project, a low frame rate, missing graphics or failure to boot may be an implementation limitation rather than a setting you can correct.
Make a changeable baseline
Run the same scene or repeatable section for several minutes with the default configuration. Record frame-rate behavior, shader stutter, audio crackle, visual corruption and crashes. Save a copy of the configuration or note every original value. Change only one setting between runs, then repeat the same scene. This prevents a resolution change, shader-cache rebuild and CPU-thread change from being mistaken for one improvement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Low frame rate: the emulator cannot render or simulate the scene quickly enough.
- Short hitches when entering new areas: shaders may be compiling.
- Audio crackle or gaps: the CPU may be missing the audio deadline.
- Missing geometry or corrupted surfaces: a graphics feature or driver path may be incompatible.
- Inconsistent results after an update: the emulator build, driver or cache may have changed.
Use the graphics settings RPCS5 documents first
The following recommendations come from RPCS5’s own graphics and system guides. They are not universal PS5-emulator rules and were not independently benchmarked. Use them only when the corresponding control exists in your RPCS5 build.
Choose the graphics API for the host
RPCS5 recommends Vulkan on supported Windows and Linux systems. For macOS, its guide identifies Metal as the available backend with a real driver and describes OpenGL as a slower fallback. Select the backend that RPCS5 documents for your operating system rather than assuming that a familiar API is fastest.

Laptops with integrated and discrete graphics can silently launch an emulator on the less capable adapter. In the operating system’s graphics settings or the laptop vendor’s GPU-control panel, assign RPCS5 to the high-performance GPU. Restart the emulator after changing that assignment and verify that the selected adapter is the one you intended.
Lower resolution scale before disabling quality features
RPCS5 calls resolution scale its largest frame-rate lever. Rendering cost rises approximately with the square of the scale: increasing from 1× to 2× can require roughly four times as many pixels, while lowering from 2× to 1× removes that corresponding pixel workload. The relationship is an approximation, not a promised frame-rate gain for every game or computer.
- Open RPCS5’s graphics configuration and note the current resolution scale.
- Reduce it by one available step, keeping texture, filtering and other quality options unchanged.
- Run the same scene used for your baseline.
- If the frame rate improves without introducing new faults, keep the lower scale or test the next step up until you find the highest stable value.
- If there is no meaningful change, restore the original value and investigate CPU load, shader compilation or compatibility instead.
Lower scale reduces image sharpness, especially on a high-resolution display. It is reversible and normally a safer first experiment than disabling specialized geometry features.
Turn on asynchronous shader compilation for shader hitching
RPCS5 recommends asynchronous shader compilation when shader compilation causes pauses. Compiling in the background can reduce visible stalls as new effects appear, but the guide warns that temporary missing geometry may be visible while a shader is still compiling. A brief visual gap is therefore a possible trade-off, not evidence that the setting failed.
Use asynchronous compilation when the problem is short, repeatable hitches during first visits to areas or when new effects appear. Do not expect it to raise the sustained frame rate of a scene that is already GPU- or CPU-limited.

Keep a persistent shader cache
Enable RPCS5’s persistent shader cache if available. It stores compiled shaders for reuse in later sessions, reducing the need to compile the same effects repeatedly. The first run after clearing or changing drivers can still stutter while the cache is rebuilt. Delete or rebuild the cache only when RPCS5’s documentation or a specific game issue indicates that the existing cache is invalid; clearing it is not a general speed boost.

Do not disable mesh shaders as a generic optimization
RPCS5’s guide says mesh shaders are required for some geometry paths and presents disabling them as a diagnostic for specific corruption. Turning them off to gain speed can remove or distort geometry and may make a compatible game less correct. If a title shows broken meshes, test the documented diagnostic switch, compare the result, and restore the feature if it does not address that particular fault.
Adjust CPU execution and caching carefully
Leave execution mode on Auto
RPCS5’s system guide recommends Auto execution mode. Unless the project documents a game-specific reason to override it, leave the mode on Auto so the emulator can select its intended execution path. A forced mode borrowed from another project can reduce compatibility or create new timing problems.
Reserve two or three CPU threads for the operating system
RPCS5 advises leaving two or three logical CPU threads available to the operating system rather than assigning every thread to emulation. This is a scheduling recommendation, not a promise that a fixed thread count is optimal on every processor.
- Note the emulator’s current CPU-thread allocation.
- If it assigns every available thread, reduce the allocation by two or three threads as RPCS5 advises.
- Repeat the same workload and watch for frame-time consistency, audio behavior and operating-system responsiveness.
- Revert if performance or stability worsens; do not reduce the count further simply because a lower number appears in an online preset.
Leaving headroom can help the operating system, audio services and drivers meet their own deadlines. It cannot compensate for a game that is fundamentally unsupported.

Enable the JIT cache
RPCS5 recommends its JIT cache so translated code can be reused between sessions. The first run may still spend time translating code, while later runs can avoid that repeated work. Treat the cache as a persistence feature, not as a guarantee of higher peak frame rate. If an emulator update, game update or driver change causes new crashes or incorrect behavior, follow that project’s cache-rebuild guidance and keep a backup of your configuration.
Fix audio crackle without hiding the underlying problem
RPCS5’s audio guide says crackling can indicate that the CPU is missing the audio deadline. Increase the audio buffer only enough to remove the crackle:
- Confirm that crackle occurs in the same scene where frame times are poor or CPU usage spikes.
- Raise the buffer by one small step.
- Repeat the scene and listen for gaps, delay or loss of synchronization.
- Stop increasing it once the crackle is gone, and investigate graphics load, CPU load and background processes if it persists.
A very large buffer may mask missed deadlines while adding latency or allowing a broader performance problem to continue. Audio buffer size is not a frame-rate optimization; use it to meet audio timing, then address the workload that caused the missed deadline.
Choose the setting by symptom and trade-off
| Symptom | First setting to try in RPCS5 | Likely trade-off | When to revert |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low frame rate in a consistently rendered scene | Lower resolution scale one step | Lower image sharpness; the actual gain varies by game and hardware | No measurable improvement, or image quality is unacceptable |
| Hitches when new effects or areas appear | Asynchronous shader compilation, then persistent shader cache | Temporary missing geometry during compilation; first run can still hitch | Corruption persists or the game becomes less stable |
| Crackling or audio gaps | Increase audio buffer only slightly | More audio latency; may conceal rather than solve CPU overload | Crackle remains, timing drifts or latency becomes obvious |
| Missing or distorted geometry | Check the graphics API and test mesh-shader disabling only as a diagnostic | Mesh-shader disablement can remove required geometry | The symptom is unchanged or new visual errors appear |
| Uneven frame times with a busy desktop | Leave two or three CPU threads for the operating system | Fewer threads assigned to emulation | Performance falls or the game has a documented different requirement |
Do not stack all of these changes at once. The table is a decision order: match the control to the symptom, test it alone and keep it only if the result is better for the same scene.
What to check when a setting makes things worse
The game becomes less compatible after a graphics change
Restore the previous graphics API, mesh-shader state and resolution scale. Confirm that the selected GPU and driver are the same as in the baseline. If the issue began after a driver or emulator update, test the project’s documented compatibility notes before changing more options.

Hitches continue after enabling the shader cache
Make sure the cache is persistent and that you are not deleting it between launches. A cache cannot eliminate the first compilation of a new effect, and a driver or game update may legitimately require new entries. If hitches are accompanied by missing geometry, compare asynchronous and synchronous compilation and retain the mode that produces correct output for the title.
Lowering resolution does nothing
A resolution change mainly reduces rendering work. If frame rate does not move, the limit may be CPU emulation, shader compilation, synchronization or an unsupported code path. Return the scale to the baseline and examine CPU execution mode, thread allocation, JIT caching and compatibility status instead of lowering image quality indefinitely.
Audio still crackles after increasing the buffer
Stop increasing the buffer once the delay becomes noticeable. Check whether the CPU is saturated, whether a background task is competing for time and whether graphics settings are causing long frame-time spikes. Persistent crackle can be a project limitation or a game-compatibility issue rather than an audio setting problem.

ShadPS5’s project page currently suggests an AVX2-capable CPU, a Vulkan-capable GPU, examples such as a GTX 1060 or RX 560, and 16 GB of RAM. The project also warns that these figures may change as optimization continues and says the emulator is not yet playable. They are project-stated, provisional requirements, not measured minimums and not benchmark results.
Those figures do not establish requirements for SharpEmu or RPCS5, nor do they prove that a computer containing those parts will run a particular game. Before considering an upgrade, check the current requirements and compatibility status for the exact emulator and title. A Vulkan-capable graphics card is a broad capability category, not a recommendation to buy a particular model, and purchasing one cannot guarantee playability.
A safe testing workflow
- Verify support: read the selected project’s current compatibility entry for the exact game and note its status.
- Confirm platform support: check the operating system, graphics API, driver and GPU path documented by that project.
- Capture the baseline: record build, hardware, resolution, frame-rate behavior, audio and visual symptoms.
- Match the symptom: choose resolution scale for sustained rendering load, shader options for compilation hitches, CPU settings for execution and scheduling, and the audio buffer for crackle.
- Change one control: apply a single setting and repeat the same scene.
- Keep or revert: retain the change only when it improves the target symptom without new corruption, latency or instability.
- Recheck after updates: emulator builds, drivers, game patches and compatibility labels can change the result.
Bottom line for each emulator
RPCS5
For a title that RPCS5 lists as sufficiently compatible, start with the documented graphics API, verify the high-performance GPU on switchable-graphics laptops, lower resolution scale for sustained low frame rate, enable asynchronous compilation and a persistent shader cache for shader hitching, keep Auto execution mode and the JIT cache, reserve two or three CPU threads for the operating system, and make only a small audio-buffer increase for crackle.
SharpEmu
Use SharpEmu’s own current compatibility information and menu documentation. Its experimental Vulkan and MoltenVK paths describe platform support, not a universal performance preset. If the game is not implemented, changing resolution or cache settings cannot supply the missing emulator functionality.

Treat the stated AVX2, Vulkan-GPU and 16 GB figures as provisional project guidance. Because ShadPS5 currently says it is not yet playable, compatibility and implementation progress take priority over tuning individual quality settings.
