First identify which PC project you are running: Crash Team Racing: Turbocharged ports the original 1999 PlayStation game, while CTR-NitroFueled-PC is a separate project for the PlayStation 4 version of Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled. They use different game files, graphics APIs and troubleshooting steps. Once you know the project and build, check its game data and graphics requirements, then change performance settings one at a time. Neither project documents a universal fix for low frame rates or crashes.
Identify the PC port before changing settings
“Crash Team Racing PC port” can refer to two distinct community projects. Check the project name in its launcher, folder or documentation before trying a fix. A setup step intended for one project can be irrelevant to the other: Turbocharged needs a specific PlayStation disc-image format and OpenGL support; Nitro-Fueled uses PlayStation 4 game and update files and requires Vulkan 1.3.
| Project | Game version | Operating system and graphics requirement | Game data | Performance options and evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crash Team Racing: Turbocharged | Original 1999 PlayStation game | Windows and Linux; OpenGL 3.3-capable GPU and driver | User’s own NTSC-U retail disc image in raw MODE2/2352 BIN format, with the data track starting at byte zero | Selectable 30, 60, 90, 120, 144 and 240 FPS modes; renderer, resolution, anti-aliasing and other graphics settings. The 240 FPS figure is a listed mode, not a benchmark. |
| CTR-NitroFueled-PC | Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled for PS4, title CUSA13795 | Windows 10/11; Vulkan 1.3 GPU | CUSA13795 base game and supported 1.21 update | README lists a 30 FPS default cap, a 60 FPS patch and uncapped play up to 240 FPS. Its reported 110–130 FPS result comes from one maintainer test configuration, not a general expectation. |
The projects’ stated features and performance figures are not a cross-port benchmark. Testing evidence is limited: the Nitro-Fueled result is a maintainer report from one PC, and the documentation does not establish a representative minimum specification or a setting that fixes every crash.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe project versions matter as well as the game versions. The Turbocharged website lists build 07d0c49, dated 6 October 2026. CTR-NitroFueled-PC release v0.2.1, published 13 October 2026, added support for an additional 1.21 update build. If a setup guide or troubleshooting post describes a different release, check whether its steps still match the build you installed.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Before changing anything, write down the exact project name and version, your operating system, GPU and driver, and the settings you are using. For a crash, note what happened immediately beforehand and whether you can reproduce it. Those basics make it easier to tell a data or compatibility problem from a performance issue.
For the original game: troubleshoot Turbocharged
Confirm the disc image and graphics support
Turbocharged’s first-run setup validates the game image and copies it into the project’s assets folder. It requires an NTSC-U retail image in raw MODE2/2352 BIN format, with the data track at byte zero. A standard 2048-byte ISO is not supported. Renaming an ISO with a .bin extension does not add the XA audio or STR video data that this format needs.
- Check that you selected the correct image and that it is the required raw BIN format, rather than relying on the filename extension.
- Confirm that the GPU and installed driver support OpenGL 3.3.
- On Linux, make sure the 32-bit build’s required 32-bit runtime libraries are installed.
If setup rejects the image, verify its structure and format rather than repeatedly renaming or recopying it. If the game starts but visuals or performance are wrong, record the selected renderer and graphics options before changing them.
These requirements are specific to Turbocharged. The image check is not a step for CTR-NitroFueled-PC, which instead expects the PS4 CUSA13795 base game and a supported 1.21 update. Likewise, having a compatible disc image does not establish that a GPU driver supports the required OpenGL version; check both data and graphics support when the game fails during initial setup or launch.
Reduce poor performance methodically
Turbocharged offers separate frame-rate and graphics controls. High frame-rate targets can demand a reasonably fast CPU and GPU; a selectable target is not a guarantee that every system can sustain it. Use the game’s available options as a diagnostic, not as a presumed universal fix:
- Record the current frame-rate target, renderer, resolution, anti-aliasing and other graphics settings.
- Lower the frame-rate target, or reduce one graphics setting that adds load.
- Repeat the same race or section and note whether the frame rate or stability changes.
- If there is no improvement, restore the changed option and test a different one. Changing one setting at a time makes the result useful.
The documented targets are 30, 60, 90, 120, 144 and 240 FPS. If a high target is unstable, trying a lower one can help determine whether the system is struggling to keep up; the project documentation does not identify a particular target as the fix for all performance problems.
For a useful comparison, keep the test as similar as possible: use the same race or section and change only one setting between attempts. Record whether the problem is low frame rate, uneven frame pacing, a visual issue or a crash. A different renderer, resolution or anti-aliasing setting may affect load or appearance, but the project documentation does not promise that any one choice will improve every PC. The goal is to find out which changes make a difference on your particular hardware.

If Turbocharged will not start on Linux
Run the program from a terminal so startup errors are visible. Check the disc-image location and format, OpenGL support, and missing 32-bit runtime libraries. The support information also notes that some GPU drivers have problems with 32-bit builds under native Wayland; the build uses X11/XWayland by default. This is a reported compatibility issue on some setups, not proof that Wayland is the cause of every Linux launch failure.
Experimental 64-bit and ARM builds are untested. Saves, replays and ghosts may not carry over from 32-bit builds, so do not assume those files are interchangeable when switching builds.
If you do test another build, keep a copy of the relevant saves and record which build produced them. The project warns that saves, replays and ghosts may not transfer, so treat switching between the 32-bit build and experimental alternatives as a compatibility change, not a guaranteed drop-in replacement. Include the build architecture and Linux environment in any report.

For Nitro-Fueled: troubleshoot CTR-NitroFueled-PC
Check the base game and update version
The project’s README identifies the required game as the PS4 CUSA13795 base game with update 1.21. Its portable launcher can prepare the base-game and update folders using hard links, avoiding an extra full copy. Follow that project’s own setup process; Turbocharged’s PlayStation disc-image requirements do not apply.
Release v0.2.1, published on 13 October 2026, added support for a 1.21 update built for firmware 6.72 or later, alongside the previously supported 5.05 build. If the launcher rejects an update, confirm that you have a supported build and that the update’s executable was actually copied into the expected folder. Check that you are using a release that includes support for your update version.
The release notes say community patches are located by matching signatures in the surrounding code. If a patch cannot be found, it is skipped and logged rather than written to an incorrect location. A skipped patch is therefore a useful clue to inspect in the log; it does not, by itself, establish why the game is failing.
Also verify the PC-side requirement before investigating settings: CTR-NitroFueled-PC calls for Windows 10 or 11 and a GPU supporting Vulkan 1.3. These are not Turbocharged requirements. If the project cannot launch, gather the exact build, the update build you prepared, and any launcher or run log rather than assuming that a frame-rate setting is responsible.
Distinguish first-use shader stalls from recurring stutter
The project documentation says that compiling shaders on first use can cause short stalls. Shaders are cached and load in a later session; background compilation is also available as an option. When a track stutters, note whether it is the first encounter with that track and whether the same pause recurs after shader caching.

For a meaningful comparison, record the FPS cap, whether the 60 FPS patch is enabled, GPU and driver, and when the stall occurs. The project’s maintainer reports 110–130 FPS uncapped in races on a Windows 11 24H2 test PC with an RTX 3070 and Intel i5-9500, using the 60 FPS patch. That is a single maintainer-reported configuration, not an independent benchmark, a minimum requirement or a promise of the same result on another PC.
That reported result should be read in context: it is an uncapped race result on one Windows 11 24H2 machine, with the 60 FPS patch in use. It does not tell you what every GPU or CPU should achieve, nor does it establish that enabling the patch fixes low FPS. The README also lists a 30 FPS default cap and uncapped play up to 240 FPS; compare the cap and patch state when describing your own results so that two different configurations are not mistaken for a like-for-like test.
If a pause happens on a track’s first visit but not after the shader cache has been created, that matches the project’s description of first-use shader stalls. If the same stutter keeps happening on later sessions, record that pattern separately. This distinction helps characterize the symptom; it is not a guaranteed workaround or proof that all recurring stutter has a different cause.
Handle the “Device lost” hang as an unresolved issue
The Nitro-Fueled project maintainer reports that some systems can hang during a race with a Device lost error. The issue is under investigation. The project’s current information does not confirm that VSync, a particular FPS limit or a driver change resolves it, so do not treat any of those as a known fix.
If it happens, capture the exact error and the project’s last_run.log, along with your GPU and driver details. Include whether it happens on every run, on a particular track or after a specific action. That information helps distinguish a repeatable problem from a one-off failure without presenting an unconfirmed workaround as established.
Include the game build and patch state too, and say whether the hang occurs at a repeatable point in a race. The maintainer’s note specifically describes a GPU hang on some setups, not a confirmed cause or a broadly effective fix. Keep any experiments clearly labelled as tests in your report; do not present a driver change or altered sync setting as a solution unless it has been confirmed for your version and setup.
Collect the right details for a useful crash report
Start with the log and the exact project build: a report that says only “CTR crashes” leaves out the details needed to identify a project-specific issue. Before filing a report, write down the steps that reproduce the problem and the settings active at the time.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Project and build: Turbocharged or CTR-NitroFueled-PC, plus the version or release.
- System: operating system, GPU and driver; for Nitro-Fueled, include whether the GPU hang shows
Device lost. - Configuration: relevant frame-rate cap or mode, patch state, renderer and graphics settings.
- Reproduction: what you were doing, where the problem occurred, whether it happens every time, and whether it persists after a fresh configuration if you have checked.
- Log: attach the log for the matching project. For the Turbocharged Linux AppImage, the default location is
~/.local/share/ctr-turbochargedunless you configured a different data directory. Nitro-Fueled’s maintainer requestslast_run.logfor the reported GPU hang.
For Turbocharged, the project specifically requests the build, OS, GPU and driver, renderer, aspect ratio and frame-rate settings, fresh-configuration result, reproduction steps and Crash Team Racing: Turbocharged.log. Report the issue to the project that matches the game you installed.

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
When reporting a Turbocharged problem, say whether it persists with a fresh configuration if you have tested that, and include the aspect ratio as well as the renderer and frame-rate mode. On Linux, the AppImage’s default data directory is ~/.local/share/ctr-turbocharged; if you configured another data directory, look there for the log instead. For Nitro-Fueled, attach last_run.log when reporting the GPU hang and include the GPU and driver requested by the maintainer.
A compact report can follow this pattern: identify the project and build; list OS, GPU and driver; state the active cap, patch and graphics settings; describe the shortest sequence that reproduces the issue; and attach the matching log. If the issue is intermittent, say how often it happens rather than calling it consistent. If you made a controlled settings change, record what changed and what happened, including when a test made no difference.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not apply console or emulator advice to these PC projects
Some search results refer to console troubleshooting or emulation rather than either native PC project. Activision’s crash guidance covers PS4, Xbox One and Switch, not Turbocharged or CTR-NitroFueled-PC, so its console steps are not validated fixes for these ports.
A user-submitted Yuzu compatibility page discusses Nitro-Fueled in an emulator and includes historical hardware entries from 2021. Its controller and docked-mode suggestions, as well as its OpenGL suggestion for NVIDIA Pascal rendering glitches, are emulator-specific guidance—not verified remedies for the newer native Windows project. Check that advice against the software and hardware you actually use before changing settings.
The distinction is important because these projects do not share the same target game or graphics API. Turbocharged is the original PS1 game with an OpenGL 3.3 requirement; CTR-NitroFueled-PC is the PS4 Nitro-Fueled project with a Vulkan 1.3 requirement. An emulator-specific renderer suggestion or console reset procedure does not establish a fix for either one.
A controller is optional input equipment, not a performance or crash fix. Turbocharged also supports local split-screen; Nitro-Fueled documents keyboard input as well as controller input. Choose input based on preference, not as a troubleshooting step. A compatible PC game controller or SDL-compatible gamepad may suit players who prefer gamepad controls, but buying one will not resolve low FPS, shader stalls, missing files or a GPU hang.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Crash Team Racing PC port am I using?
Check the project name in its launcher, folder or documentation. Crash Team Racing: Turbocharged is the Windows/Linux port of the original 1999 PS1 game. Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does Turbocharged reject my BIN file?
Turbocharged requires an NTSC-U retail disc image in raw MODE2/2352 BIN format, with the data track starting at byte zero. A standard 2048-byte ISO is unsupported, and renaming it to .bin does not restore the XA audio or STR video data the required format contains.

What graphics API does each PC project require?
Turbocharged requires a GPU and driver supporting OpenGL 3.3. CTR-NitroFueled-PC requires a Vulkan 1.3 GPU and lists Windows 10/11. Do not apply one project’s API requirements to the other.
What should I try if Turbocharged performs poorly?
Record the frame-rate target, renderer, resolution, anti-aliasing and other graphics settings. Lower the frame-rate target or change one graphics setting, then repeat the same race or section. Restore the setting if there is no improvement and test another option. The project lists 30, 60, 90, 120, 144 and 240 FPS modes but does not document one universal performance fix.
Is a first-track stutter in CTR-NitroFueled-PC a known issue?
The project says first-use shader compilation can cause short stalls; shaders are cached for later sessions, and background compilation is available. Note whether the pause happens only on the first encounter with a track and whether it recurs after the cache is created. Recurring stutter should be reported with the FPS cap, patch state, GPU and driver.
What does “Device lost” mean in Nitro-Fueled?
The project maintainer reports that some systems can hang mid-race with a Device lost error, and says the issue is under investigation. The available project information does not confirm a general VSync, FPS-limit or driver-change fix. Include the error, GPU and driver, game build, reproduction details and last_run.log in a report.
What should I include in a Crash Team Racing PC crash report?
Include the exact project and build, operating system, GPU and driver, relevant graphics and frame-rate settings, reproduction steps, whether the issue is repeatable, and the matching project log. Turbocharged reports should include renderer, aspect ratio, frame-rate settings and fresh-configuration results if checked. Nitro-Fueled’s maintainer requests last_run.log for the reported GPU hang.
Can I use console fixes or Yuzu settings for these PC ports?
Not as confirmed PC fixes. Activision’s crash guidance covers PS4, Xbox One and Switch. Yuzu compatibility suggestions, including its historical OpenGL note for some NVIDIA Pascal rendering glitches, are emulator-specific and are not verified remedies for the native Windows project.
The Bottom Line
Identify the exact project and build first, then verify the matching game data and graphics requirements. For performance issues, change one setting at a time and compare the same gameplay; for crashes, capture reproducible steps and the project-specific log. Turbocharged’s Linux/32-bit notes and Nitro-Fueled’s shader stalls and unresolved Device lost hang are distinct issues, not interchangeable fixes.
