The right performance fix depends on where the game is rendered. If a Windows game runs locally through an Android compatibility layer, the phone performs the rendering and results vary by device, renderer, driver path, game version, and layer. If a PC streams the game to Android, the important chain is host rendering, host encoding, network delivery, and Android decoding. Identify that path first; a setting that helps streaming can be irrelevant—or harmful—in local execution.

For streamed games, start with the host game’s frame rate, test a lower stream or in-game resolution such as 1280×720, compare hardware-encoding modes, inspect the Android client’s statistics overlay, and leave upload capacity for other traffic. For local execution, there is no evidence-backed universal preset: change one option at a time and verify it on the exact phone, game, and software versions you use.

Local Windows-game execution

In a local setup, the Android phone or tablet runs the Windows game through a compatibility layer. Its CPU and GPU produce the frames, while the layer translates or adapts Windows graphics and input calls. Performance can change substantially with the phone model, Android version, compatibility-layer version, graphics renderer, driver, game build, resolution, and individual game settings.

The available official guidance does not establish a benchmarked resolution, graphics preset, FPS cap, renderer, or compatibility-layer release that is best across phones and games. Do not copy a streaming recommendation such as 1280×720 and assume it is the best local setting. Use current compatibility information for your exact device and game, then make controlled changes in the game itself.

PC-to-Android streaming

In streaming, the PC renders the game. It then encodes a video stream, sends that stream across a local network or the Internet, and the Android client decodes and displays it. Android may not be the rendering bottleneck at all. A low stream frame rate can come from the game’s frame rate, host encoding, network delivery, or client decoding and display work.

Do not confuse this with Android games on a PC

Google Play Games on PC is the reverse direction: an Android game runs on a PC. Google’s developer recommendations for that platform are not instructions for running a Windows PC game on an Android phone. The distinction matters when reading advice about Vulkan, texture compression, 4K output, or 60 FPS.

How to improve streamed PC games on Android

Use the following sequence rather than lowering every quality option at once. Keep the game, scene, phone, host, and network unchanged while testing so that each result is meaningful.

1. Confirm whether the host game is already slow

Watch the game directly on the host PC, or use the host game’s performance display if it provides one. Steam Support describes low streaming frame rate as usually resulting from a low game frame rate or slow encoding on the host computer. Its wording is: “Low streaming framerate is usually caused by slow game framerate or slow encoding on the host computer.”

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

If the game is slow on the PC itself, reducing Android stream quality cannot remove the host’s rendering limit. Lower the game’s graphics workload on the host first: reduce a setting that is expensive in the affected scene, or use a lower in-game display resolution for a controlled test. If the host is smooth but Android is not, continue with encoding, network, and client checks.

2. Lower the stream resolution as a reversible diagnostic

Steam’s low-frame-rate troubleshooting recommends lowering the stream’s resolution limit and also trying a lower in-game display resolution. It gives 1280×720 as an example starting point. That is a diagnostic value, not a universal recommendation for every Android screen, game, connection, or host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set the streaming application’s resolution limit to 1280×720, if that option is available.
  2. If the stream remains unstable, temporarily lower the game’s own display resolution on the host as well.
  3. Replay the same scene and compare frame delivery, responsiveness, and text clarity.
  4. If performance improves, raise resolution one step at a time until the image becomes too demanding or too difficult to read.

Resolution affects several stages at once. A smaller image can reduce the host’s rendering work, the encoder’s workload, the number of pixels the Android device must decode and display, and—depending on the streaming implementation—the bandwidth required. It also reduces detail and can make menus or small text harder to read. Test the stream and the game’s internal resolution separately when possible so you know which change helped.

3. Test host hardware encoding in both states

Steam Support recommends trying the host’s hardware-encoding option for the graphics card in use. Hardware encoding can behave differently depending on the host GPU, driver, and the rendering load already imposed by the game. The documentation’s relative comparison is qualified as applying “in most cases,” so it should not be turned into a universal ranking.

  1. Record the current encoding setting and the game scene used for testing.
  2. Run the same scene with hardware encoding enabled.
  3. Run it again with hardware encoding disabled, if the application offers that switch.
  4. Keep the better result for your particular host and game, judging both smoothness and image quality.

Do not change encoding mode and resolution in the same trial. Otherwise, you cannot tell which change removed the bottleneck.

4. Use the Android client’s statistics overlay

Moonlight provides an on-screen statistics overlay on Android. Its documentation warns that client performance varies significantly with selected resolution, frame rate, and client hardware. The overlay is useful for comparing repeated trials on the same setup; it is not a universal benchmark and does not include every form of system or display latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable the overlay, reproduce a repeatable section of the game, and note whether the problem appears as missed or delayed frames, an unstable stream, or a consistently high client workload. Then change one variable—resolution, stream frame rate, or bitrate—and repeat the same test. Compare like with like: measurements from different games, applications, devices, or overlay definitions are not automatically interchangeable.

5. Leave upload headroom for Internet streaming

When the host and Android device communicate over the Internet, the host must upload the video stream. Moonlight recommends setting the streaming bitrate at least 1 Mbps below the host connection’s upload speed. This leaves capacity for other traffic and reduces the chance that ordinary network activity will disrupt the stream.

For example, if the host’s available upload capacity is measured at 20 Mbps under the conditions in which you play, keep the configured stream bitrate at or below 19 Mbps according to that recommendation. The figure is a headroom rule for Internet streaming, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or image quality. A connection can still stutter because of wireless interference, congestion, routing, or packet loss.

6. Choose frame rate after the bottleneck is known

A higher stream frame rate asks the host to produce frames more consistently and asks the encoder, network, decoder, and display pipeline to handle them. If the host cannot sustain the game’s target frame rate, increasing the stream setting only adds pressure. If the host is fast but the Android client or connection struggles, a lower stream frame rate can make delivery steadier.

Change the stream frame-rate setting only after checking the host game and resolution. Use a stable cap that the entire chain can sustain rather than chasing a fluctuating peak. The sources do not prescribe one universal cap for Android streaming, so select the highest stable value your exact setup maintains without repeated drops or visible judder.

A practical streaming test plan

Use this worksheet for each game. The goal is to identify the limiting stage, not simply to make the picture smaller.

  1. Freeze the test conditions. Use one game scene, the same host, Android device, network route, controller, and application version for every trial.
  2. Measure the host baseline. Establish whether the game itself is smooth on the PC before opening the stream.
  3. Check resolution. Try the current setting, then 1280×720 as the documented diagnostic example. Record host smoothness, stream smoothness, and readability separately.
  4. Check encoding. Compare hardware encoding enabled and disabled with all other settings unchanged.
  5. Check the client. Use the Android statistics overlay to see whether the client behaves differently at each resolution and frame-rate setting.
  6. Check the network. For Internet play, keep bitrate at least 1 Mbps below measured host upload capacity and repeat the same scene while other traffic is representative of normal use.
  7. Restore quality gradually. Raise one setting at a time until you find the highest stable combination, then keep a note of it for that game and device.

What to change when the symptom points to a specific bottleneck

Observed symptom Most useful first test Why it helps
The game is slow even when viewed directly on the host PC Lower host graphics workload or in-game resolution The host is not producing frames quickly enough; Android stream quality cannot fix that.
The host game is smooth, but the stream frame rate is low Test host hardware encoding and lower stream resolution Steam identifies host encoding and game frame rate as common causes; resolution can reduce work across the pipeline.
The image is clear but delivery is uneven on Internet play Lower bitrate and preserve at least 1 Mbps of upload headroom Bandwidth contention or network instability can interrupt an otherwise fast host.
Performance changes sharply when resolution or frame rate changes Use the Android statistics overlay and compare one setting at a time Moonlight documents client variation by resolution, frame rate, and hardware.
Text becomes difficult to read after lowering resolution Raise resolution one step, then reduce a different workload or use a steadier frame-rate target Lower resolution trades legibility for lower pixel and encoding load.

Local Windows games running directly on Android

Local execution needs a different method because the Android device performs the rendering. There is no source-supported universal “best” configuration for all phones, compatibility layers, renderers, and PC games.

Use a controlled, per-game process

  1. Record the exact environment. Note the phone model, Android version, compatibility-layer version, renderer or driver path, game version, and current resolution.
  2. Establish a baseline. Use the game’s default graphics settings and play a repeatable scene long enough to expose stutter or overheating.
  3. Lower resolution first. Reduce the game’s resolution by one available step and observe whether frame delivery improves. Do not assume the 1280×720 streaming example is the correct local value.
  4. Change one graphics option. Test a single setting such as shadows, reflections, effects, or texture quality, then return to the same scene.
  5. Check stability over time. A short smooth run can become uneven after the phone heats up or background activity changes. Compare trials of similar duration.
  6. Keep the most consistent setting. Prefer a stable, readable experience over a brief peak frame rate.

Results can differ even between games using the same engine. A renderer or driver change may help one title and break another, so treat compatibility information as specific to the exact device and software combination. Avoid claiming that one layer, renderer, FPS cap, or preset is universally superior when no benchmark establishes that.

Why streaming advice does not transfer directly

In streaming, lowering resolution can reduce encoding, network, and Android decoding work while leaving the host’s game rendering unchanged. In local execution, lowering resolution directly changes the phone’s rendering workload. Encoding and upload settings may not exist at all. Diagnose the stage that actually produces the slowdown instead of importing settings from a different play path.

Keep Google Play Games on PC advice in its proper context

Google’s Android Developers guidance for Google Play Games on PC addresses developers preparing Android games to run on PCs. Google recommends Vulkan where possible for optimal performance, texture compression while avoiding texture transcoding where possible, and a frame-rate cap of at least 60 FPS—or no cap for games that can run faster on PCs. The platform supports resolutions up to 4K and also addresses large-screen UI scaling and aspect-ratio support.

Those recommendations do not tell you how to run a Windows game on an Android phone. They are useful here mainly to prevent a category error: a platform capability of up to 4K on Google Play Games on PC is not a promise that a phone can render a local Windows game at 4K, and a developer’s 60-FPS recommendation for Android games on PC is not a universal streaming target.

Controls and accessories: useful, but not a performance upgrade

A Bluetooth controller that is compatible with Android can make streamed games easier to play. Moonlight documents gamepad input being passed to the host as a virtual Xbox 360 controller. A controller can improve comfort and control accuracy, but it does not increase FPS, improve graphics quality, or remove network delay. Diagnose performance separately from input ergonomics.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Lowering Android resolution before checking the host. If the host game is already slow, stream changes address the wrong problem.
  • Assuming 720p is a universal answer. Steam’s 1280×720 value is an example troubleshooting starting point.
  • Changing several settings together. One-variable tests reveal which stage is limiting performance.
  • Calling every stutter a graphics issue. Encoding, upload contention, wireless conditions, and client decoding can all interrupt delivery.
  • Comparing overlay numbers from unlike setups. Moonlight notes that client measurements do not cover every form of latency and vary with hardware and selected settings.
  • Using Google Play Games on PC settings for a phone. That documentation concerns Android games running on PCs.
  • Promising a universal local-emulation preset. Available official evidence does not establish one for all phone-and-game combinations.

Quick decision checklist

  • Is the game rendered locally on Android, or streamed from a PC?
  • If streamed, is the host game itself smooth?
  • Have you tested a lower stream or in-game resolution, with 1280×720 used only as a diagnostic example?
  • Have you compared host hardware encoding enabled and disabled?
  • Have you checked the Android client’s statistics overlay?
  • For Internet play, is the bitrate at least 1 Mbps below measured host upload capacity?
  • Did you change only one variable between trials?
  • For local execution, did you verify the exact phone, game, renderer, driver, and compatibility-layer combination?

The Bottom Line

There is no single best graphics, resolution, or FPS setting for every PC game on Android. Streaming problems should be isolated across host frame production, encoding, network delivery, and Android client performance; local execution must be tuned per device and game. Start with a repeatable baseline, test resolution and encoding one at a time, preserve Internet upload headroom, and keep the highest setting that remains consistently smooth and readable.
