Most wireless-headset audio problems on PlayStation are fixed by checking the selected devices, mute state, microphone level, and game/chat balance in that order. Use the PS5 or PS4 path for your console, then handle echo and wireless dropouts as separate problems. Do not raise every volume control at once: microphone input, game output, chat output, and their balance are different settings.

Start by identifying the symptom

A headset that sounds “bad” can have several unrelated faults. Identify the exact symptom before changing settings. This prevents you from increasing microphone gain when the real problem is a mute switch, or buying an accessory when the wireless adapter is simply too close to another USB device.

What you notice First checks What the check tells you
Other people cannot hear you Selected input device, microphone mute state, microphone level, and input meter Whether the console is receiving microphone signal
Your voice is too quiet or distorted Microphone level and mic position; test with another headset or controller Whether the issue is level, placement, or a faulty device
You hear your own voice or other people hear an echo Lower the microphone level; move the headset away from speakers; reset the headset if needed Whether feedback is being created by an overly sensitive mic or speaker pickup
You hear game audio but not chat Voice-chat balance and chat output settings Whether chat is being masked by game audio or routed elsewhere
You hear chat but game audio is missing Output device and game/chat balance Whether game sound is routed to the headset and has not been turned down relative to chat
Sound cuts out or skips USB 3.0 devices, adapter placement, headset reset, and network connection for party-chat disconnections Whether the interruption is related to local wireless-adapter placement or the internet connection

Verify the console’s input, output, and mute state

PS5: select the output device

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Sound, then Audio Output.
  3. Check Output Device and select the wireless headset when it is listed.

This controls where console audio is sent. Selecting a headset as the output does not by itself guarantee that its microphone is selected, so check the input separately.

PS5: select and test the microphone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Sound, then Microphone.
  3. Under Input Device, select the wireless headset’s microphone.
  4. Speak at your normal chat distance and watch the microphone-level indicator. Confirm that the headset’s physical mute control is not active.

If the indicator responds but other players still cannot hear you, the problem is more likely to be party or game-chat routing than a dead microphone. If it does not respond, continue with the headset’s mute control, mic position, and a second-device test.

PS4: use the different audio-device path

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Devices, then Audio Devices.
  3. Check the selected input and output devices.
  4. Choose Adjust Microphone Level and speak normally.
  5. Watch the Input Volume bar. It should react to your voice.

PlayStation specifically advises trying another headset or controller if the PS4 Input Volume bar does not move. That comparison helps isolate a failing headset, a controller connection problem, or a console-side setting without guessing.

Check the headset itself before changing software settings

  • Make sure the microphone is fully extended or positioned for use if the model has a retractable boom.
  • Check the physical mute button, flip-to-mute mechanism, or mute indicator.
  • Confirm that the wireless adapter is connected to the console and that the headset is powered on.
  • Speak at a normal distance rather than pressing the microphone against your mouth.

Set the microphone level without adding distortion

Microphone level controls input sensitivity; they do not increase the volume of game audio or party chat. Raise it only enough for reliable speech. If the signal is already clear and the meter reacts, increasing the level further can make background sound and feedback more noticeable.

Use the PS5 microphone control

On PS5, return to Settings > Sound > Microphone and adjust the microphone level while speaking at the volume you use in a party. Make a small change, then ask another player whether your voice is clearer. Test at the same distance and in the same room so that each adjustment has a meaningful comparison.

Use the PS4 microphone control

On PS4, use Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Adjust Microphone Level. Watch the Input Volume bar as you speak. A nonmoving bar is a signal-path problem, not a reason to keep raising the level.

When another headset or controller is the right test

If the meter does not react, connect another compatible headset or try another controller with a microphone connection. If the second device works, the original headset, adapter, or controller connection is implicated. If neither device produces input, recheck the console selection and connection before concluding that the console itself is faulty.

Balance game audio and voice chat

When both streams work but one masks the other, use a balance control rather than changing the microphone level. A balance control changes the relative loudness of game output and chat output; it does not repair a microphone that is muted or not detected.

PS5 voice-chat balance

During a voice chat, open the PS5 voice-chat card and adjust the voice-chat balance so that game sound and conversation are both intelligible. The exact control is a relative balance: moving it toward chat makes voices more prominent, while moving it toward game makes game audio more prominent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PULSE 3D headset controls

On the PULSE 3D headset, Sony identifies separate CHAT and GAME buttons for relative volume. Use them while both streams are active, making one-button changes until neither stream masks the other. Pressing CHAT and GAME together resets the relative balance. Some games may not support the headset’s balance control in the same way, so test the behavior in the specific game and chat mode you are using.

Do not confuse volume with routing

  • If game audio is absent, first confirm the headset is the PS5 output device or the selected PS4 output device.
  • If chat is absent, verify that you are in the intended party or game-chat channel and then check the balance.
  • If only your microphone is absent, changing the game/chat balance will not restore it; return to input-device and mute checks.

Fix echo and feedback

Echo usually means that microphone input is picking up audio that should remain in the headset, or that the input level is too high. Treat it separately from game/chat balance.

Lower the microphone level on PS5

PlayStation’s wireless-headset troubleshooting guidance says: “Slide the Microphone Level fader 2 to 4 notches to the left.” On PS5, make that adjustment under Settings > Sound > Microphone. Test after lowering it rather than moving it repeatedly during a live conversation.

Lower the microphone level on PS4

On PS4, use Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Adjust Microphone Level and move the level two to four notches to the left. Speak again and check whether the echo has stopped. This is a specific PlayStation troubleshooting step, not a universal setting for every console or headset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the microphone away from speakers

The Gold Wireless Headset instruction manual warns that leaving the headset near speakers while the microphone is active can cause feedback. If you are using external speakers, lower them or turn them off while testing the headset. Keep the microphone pointed away from any speaker that is producing the sound it is supposed to capture privately.

Reset after the level and placement checks

If echo remains after lowering the microphone level and separating the headset from speakers, reset the headset according to its model instructions. Resetting is a recovery step after the basic input and placement checks; it is not a substitute for selecting the correct input device.

Stop wireless dropouts and skipping

Intermittent audio is usually best approached as a connection and placement problem before purchasing anything. The PlayStation guidance below applies to wireless headsets using a console adapter; it does not establish a universal cause for every wireless setup.

Remove possible USB interference

  1. Temporarily remove USB 3.0 devices from the PlayStation console.
  2. Test the headset in the same game or chat where the dropout occurred.
  3. If several USB devices or wireless adapters remain close together, create more physical distance between them.

Sony suggests using a USB extension cable to move a wireless adapter away from nearby USB devices when several are installed. The cable addresses adapter placement only. It does not improve microphone quality, change game/chat balance, or guarantee a fix. Verify that the connector and cable arrangement are compatible with your console and adapter before buying one.

Reset the headset if interruptions continue

If removing or spacing USB devices does not help, follow the headset’s reset procedure and pair it again if the model requires pairing. Keep the console, adapter, and headset in their normal positions while testing so that you can tell whether the reset changed the behavior.

Separate local dropouts from party-chat disconnections

If the voice-chat icon flashes or party chat disconnects while local game audio remains stable, check the internet connection as well as the headset. PlayStation recommends checking the connection and, when possible, trying a wired internet connection. A network change can test the chat path without changing the headset’s microphone or output settings.

Configure a PULSE Elite specifically

Extend the microphone and check its indicator

For the PULSE Elite, extend the retractable microphone when you want to chat. Confirm that the mute indicator is not lit; a lit mute indicator means the microphone is muted. These are physical-state checks, so changing PS5 software levels cannot override them.

Use volume, EQ, and sidetone controls appropriately

The PULSE Elite provides volume controls, while equalizer (EQ) and sidetone settings are available through the PS5 or the PlayStation Link PC Driver. EQ changes how game audio is shaped; sidetone changes how much of your own microphone signal you hear. Neither setting repairs a microphone that is muted, missing from the input-device list, or producing no meter response.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change one setting at a time and test a familiar game or chat. If your own voice becomes distracting, reduce sidetone rather than lowering the microphone input level that other players need to hear.

A complete symptom-led troubleshooting sequence

Use this order when you do not know which setting is responsible. Stop as soon as the symptom is resolved; changing additional controls can make the original cause harder to identify.

  1. Name the symptom. Decide whether the issue is missing microphone input, quiet or distorted speech, echo, missing game audio, missing chat, or wireless interruption.
  2. Check physical state. Power on the headset, connect its adapter, extend the mic if required, and turn off the headset mute state.
  3. Select the output. On PS5 use Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device. On PS4 use Settings > Devices > Audio Devices.
  4. Select the input. On PS5 use Settings > Sound > Microphone > Input Device. On PS4 use Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Adjust Microphone Level.
  5. Watch the input meter. On PS4, the Input Volume bar should move when you speak. On PS5, confirm the microphone-level indicator reacts.
  6. Test a second device if there is no response. Try another headset or controller to separate a device fault from a console-setting problem.
  7. Set microphone level. Use small adjustments; do not use microphone gain to solve a game/chat-volume problem.
  8. Set game/chat balance. Use the PS5 voice-chat card or the headset’s supported controls, such as the PULSE 3D CHAT and GAME buttons.
  9. Handle echo separately. Lower the microphone level two to four notches, move the headset away from speakers, and reset the headset if echo persists.
  10. Handle dropouts separately. Remove nearby USB 3.0 devices, create distance between adapters with a compatible USB extension cable if necessary, and reset the headset if interruptions remain.
  11. Check the network for party-chat disconnections. Test the internet connection and, if possible, a wired connection when the voice-chat icon flashes or the party disconnects.

What each control changes

Control or check Changes Does not change
PS5 Output Device or PS4 output-device selection Where console audio is sent Whether the microphone is muted or selected
PS5 Input Device or PS4 microphone selection Which microphone the console receives Game/chat relative volume
Microphone level Input sensitivity for your voice Game-audio volume and chat-output balance
Voice-chat or CHAT/GAME balance Relative prominence of game audio and chat Microphone detection or wireless range
EQ Tonality of supported headset audio Mute state, input selection, and network connectivity
Sidetone How much of your own voice you hear How loudly other players receive your voice
USB extension cable Physical distance between a wireless adapter and nearby USB devices Microphone quality, headset balance, and game audio routing

When replacement hardware is justified

Consider replacing a headset or controller only after the console paths, mute state, input meter, and second-device comparison point to hardware failure. The available PlayStation guidance does not establish a universally compatible replacement microphone, cable, ear pad, or headset. If you do replace a device, confirm compatibility with your PlayStation model and the headset’s connection method before purchasing.

A USB extension cable is the one physical accessory directly associated with the troubleshooting steps above, and only for the conditional case where a wireless adapter is too close to USB devices. Buy it for placement flexibility, not as an audio-quality upgrade.

Limits of what these settings can solve

  • No software balance control can restore a microphone that produces no input-meter response.
  • Raising microphone level cannot repair a muted retractable microphone or a disconnected adapter.
  • EQ and sidetone do not fix party-chat network disconnections.
  • A USB extension cable cannot improve microphone clarity when the microphone is already selected and working.
  • Because controls vary by console, game, and headset model, a PULSE 3D button behavior or PULSE Elite option should not be assumed to exist on another headset.

Final verification checklist

  • The correct headset is selected as the output device.
  • The correct microphone is selected as the input device.
  • The headset is not muted, and a retractable microphone is extended when required.
  • The PS5 microphone indicator or PS4 Input Volume bar responds to speech.
  • Microphone level is high enough for clear speech but not so high that it creates echo.
  • Game and chat are balanced with the appropriate console or headset control.
  • The headset is not positioned beside active speakers.
  • Nearby USB 3.0 devices have been removed or physically separated when dropouts occur.
  • The headset has been reset if echo or interruptions persist after the relevant checks.
  • The internet connection has been checked when party chat disconnects independently of local game audio.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I hear the game but not party chat?

Confirm the headset is the selected output device, then adjust the PS5 voice-chat balance or the supported CHAT/GAME controls on the headset. A microphone-level change will not restore missing chat output.

Why does my PS4 microphone meter stay still?

Check the mute state and the selected audio device. If the Input Volume bar still does not react under Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Adjust Microphone Level, try another headset or controller to isolate the failing device.

Will a USB extension cable make my microphone sound better?

No. PlayStation suggests one only to create distance between a wireless adapter and nearby USB devices when dropouts occur. It does not change microphone quality or game/chat balance.

What does a lit PULSE Elite mute indicator mean?

It means the microphone is muted. Extend the retractable microphone and turn off mute before changing PS5 microphone settings.
