To find what may be draining your MacBook Pro, check Activity Monitor > Energy, then compare the pattern in Apple menu > System Settings > Battery. Try reversible energy-saving settings before treating poor runtime as a battery fault. If it remains poor, check Battery Health and your Mac’s model-specific cycle count.
Find apps with high energy use
- Open Activity Monitor. Use Spotlight to find it if needed, then select the Energy tab.
- Compare Energy Impact. Apple describes this as a relative measure of an app’s current energy consumption; lower is better. On a MacBook Pro, the 12 hr Power column shows average energy impact over the last 12 hours or since startup, whichever period applies. Apple says lower is better for this measure too. Apple’s Activity Monitor guide explains the columns.
- Look for context. If available, inspect App Nap, Graphics Card, and Preventing Sleep. These indicators can help explain energy use, but they do not prove that an app is faulty.
- Observe before acting. Check whether a recognized app stays high during your usual workload. Close or adjust apps you know you do not need. Avoid force quitting unfamiliar system processes: one reading does not establish that a process is the cause of poor battery life.
Activity Monitor also shows overall energy information and, on laptops, battery details such as estimated remaining time and charge-level history. The readings are relative and workload-dependent; Apple does not quantify how many extra hours a particular change will provide.
Check when battery use changed
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery. Use the history views to compare battery use with your recent routine. Apple’s Battery settings guide describes these controls; labels and availability can vary by Mac and macOS version.
- Last 24 Hours: Review battery level and screen-on use. Apple displays battery level in 15-minute intervals, with shading indicating when the Mac was charging.
- Last 10 Days: Review daily Energy Usage and Screen On Usage. Look for a change around the time you noticed shorter runtime.
A rise in screen-on time or a change in daily energy use may point to a change in workload rather than battery wear. The history helps establish a pattern, but does not identify a specific app as the cause.

Make changes for more runtime now
These settings target energy use during the current session. The exact choices depend on the MacBook Pro model, processor, and macOS version.
Enable Low Power Mode
In System Settings > Battery, choose Low Power Mode if that option is available. Apple says this mode reduces energy use to increase battery life. It is useful when extending runtime matters more than peak performance. Apple’s Low Power Mode guide describes the setting.

Reduce display and peripheral use
- Lower display brightness; if available, enable the option to slightly dim the display on battery.
- Close apps you are not using.
- Disconnect peripherals that are not needed.
Apple recommends these measures to reduce energy use, but does not publish a guaranteed runtime gain for any one of them. Apple’s battery-saving recommendations cover these steps.
Review graphics and video settings where supported
Some MacBook Pro configurations offer graphics switching or video-streaming options. If the relevant setting appears in Battery settings, review it for your use: automatic graphics switching can help optimize battery lifespan, and Apple describes an option to play HDR video in SDR while on battery. These controls are not available on every configuration. See Apple’s Mac battery settings guide.

Separate short-term runtime from battery lifespan
Low Power Mode and reduced brightness aim to reduce energy use now. Optimized Battery Charging, Charge Limit, and battery health management instead aim to reduce battery aging. They may mean the battery is not at 100% whenever you check it.
Optimized Battery Charging may delay charging past 80% when your Mac predicts it will stay connected to power for an extended period. A Charge Limit can also cap charging. Apple says battery health management may temporarily reduce maximum charge to help limit chemical aging. A charge below 100% by itself is not evidence of a faulty battery. Apple’s guidance for Apple silicon Mac laptops says a normal battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at its maximum cycle count under normal conditions; that is a design statement, not a prediction of runtime or a universal replacement threshold. Check battery health and cycle count
Read Battery Health
In System Settings > Battery, inspect Battery Health and maximum capacity if shown. Normal means the battery is functioning normally. Service Recommended means it holds less charge than when new or may not be functioning normally. Consider service if the reduced capacity affects your use; Apple identifies Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider as service options. Apple’s battery condition guide defines these statuses.

- Hold Option while clicking the Apple menu.
- Choose System Information.
- Under Hardware, select Power and find the cycle count.
Cycle-count limits vary by Mac model. Identify your exact MacBook Pro model and year before interpreting the count or selecting a replacement. Apple recommends replacing the battery for best performance once it reaches the maximum cycle count for that model. Apple’s cycle-count guide lists model-specific limits.

Choose the next step based on the evidence
- An app or usage change appears to be involved: Adjust or close the recognized app when it is not needed, then compare Activity Monitor and Battery history during your normal workload.
- Runtime is poor, but Battery Health says Normal: Use the history and energy indicators to investigate workload before assuming the battery needs replacement.
- Battery Health says Service Recommended, or the model-specific cycle limit is reached: Consider service. A replacement battery must match the exact MacBook Pro model; poor runtime alone is not enough to identify the correct part.
Apple’s built-in tools provide the energy, usage-history, and battery-condition checks described here. Paths, labels, and available settings vary by Mac model and macOS version.
