To improve dark action-camera footage, add light first, keep the camera steady, use the camera’s dedicated low-light mode when available, and then balance shutter speed, ISO, frame rate, and stabilization for the amount of movement in the scene. There is no single setting that works across every DJI Osmo Action or Insta360 model: menus, supported frame rates, and processing change by camera and firmware.
The key compromise is motion. A slower shutter gathers more light but can smear a moving subject; a higher ISO brightens the image but makes digital noise more visible. The best setup is therefore scene-specific, not a universal “set it to 1/30” or “always raise ISO” recipe.
Why low-light action footage looks dark, noisy, or blurry
An action camera has a small sensor and limited light-gathering area. In a dim scene it must either receive more light, expose for longer, or amplify the signal it captured. Each option has a cost.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- More light: A lamp or brighter location improves exposure without asking the camera to amplify an extremely weak signal. This generally preserves more detail and reduces the need for aggressive noise reduction.
- Slower shutter: The sensor is exposed for longer, so the image can look brighter. If the camera or subject moves during that exposure, edges and details become blurred.
- Higher ISO: The camera amplifies the captured signal. Brightness increases, but the random noise in a dark signal is amplified too.
- Digital stabilization: Electronic image stabilization (EIS) can smooth walking or riding footage, but it needs suitable image information and motion conditions. In very dark scenes, processing can produce warping, softness, or a worse result than an unstabilized clip.
- High frame rates: Recording 50, 60, or more frames per second gives motion a smooth look, but each frame has less time to collect light than a 24- or 30-fps recording at the same shutter relationship.
Think of low-light setup as choosing where to spend your limited light budget: illumination, exposure time, amplification, or motion smoothness.

Start with the scene before changing settings
Add practical light
DJI’s general low-light guidance recommends increasing environmental brightness when possible, such as turning on a lamp. A portable LED video light is useful for a person, desk, doorway, campsite, or other controlled scene. Treat it as general scene lighting: no camera-specific mount, waterproof rating, or underwater compatibility is established here.
Place the light to the side or slightly above the subject rather than pointing it directly into the lens. Avoid shining a small, intense light straight at a nearby face; it can create harsh highlights while leaving the background black. If you can move the subject, put it near a window, a shopfront, or another broad source instead of relying on a tiny point light.
Decide whether the camera or subject is moving
For a static subject, a support, tripod, wall, or two-handed grip lets the camera use a longer exposure without adding as much camera shake. For action, prioritize a shutter that freezes the movement you care about. A runner, cyclist, or vehicle needs a different compromise from a person speaking while seated.
Check the actual scene, not the room’s apparent brightness
Your eyes adapt to darkness better than a camera does. Review a short test clip on a larger screen and inspect shadow detail, moving edges, and noise. A bright camera preview can still produce a dark file, while aggressive preview gain can make a noisy scene appear better than it is.
A repeatable low-light setup
- Clean and protect the lens. Wipe fingerprints, condensation, and rain droplets from the lens cover. A dirty or wet cover creates glowing halos around lights that settings cannot remove.
- Set the recording format you actually need. Start at 4K/30 when the model supports it and the scene does not require slow motion. Lower frame rates leave more exposure time per frame than high-speed recording.
- Turn on the model’s low-light mode. Use PureVideo on a supported Insta360 model or the applicable DJI low-light feature. Confirm the mode’s frame-rate and stabilization restrictions in the current camera guide.
- Stabilize the camera physically. Use a firm grip, support, or fixed position. Physical stability helps whether EIS is on or off.
- Choose shutter speed for motion. Use a slower shutter only when the camera and subject can remain sufficiently still. For fast movement, test a faster shutter even if the image becomes darker.
- Raise ISO only as far as needed. Increase it gradually while watching shadow noise and color speckling. Do not treat a high ISO number as a quality setting; it is an exposure compromise.
- Test stabilization both ways when the scene is very dark. Compare EIS enabled with EIS disabled in the same movement and lighting. Keep the version with cleaner detail and fewer artifacts.
- Record a short comparison clip. Change one variable at a time—light, shutter, ISO, mode, or stabilization—so you know which change helped.
Shutter speed, ISO, and frame rate: the motion trade-off
When a slower shutter helps
A longer exposure can make a stationary night scene, interior, or locked-off talking shot brighter. The camera must remain still, and the subject should not move significantly during each frame. Even a person’s hand gesture can leave a soft trail if the shutter is too slow.
Insta360 explicitly documents this trade-off for GO Ultra PureVideo: slower shutter behavior can produce motion blur. That warning applies to the decision itself, not as a universal number for every camera.

When a faster shutter is worth the darker image
For moving subjects, a faster shutter reduces blur. DJI’s support guidance for Osmo Action 4 and Osmo Action 3 discusses a shutter speed of at least 1/200 second for its specified low-light recommendations. This is a model-specific starting point, not a promise that every night scene will be bright at that speed; in very low light, the resulting image may be darker and noisier.
How ISO changes the result
Higher ISO can rescue brightness when you cannot add light or lengthen the exposure. DJI describes ISO as a brightness-versus-noise trade-off. Increase it only until the subject is readable, then look for crushed shadows, colored noise, and smeared fine detail. If the scene is static, adding light or using a support is usually preferable to continually increasing ISO.
Why frame rate matters
At 30 fps, each frame has more available exposure time than at 60 fps when other settings are comparable. Use 60 fps when you genuinely need smoother motion or a slow-motion workflow, not as a default for a dark scene. Dedicated low-light modes may impose their own frame-rate limits.
DJI Osmo Action starting points
DJI’s recommendations differ by generation and by whether you are using PRO mode. Apply the model-specific guidance below, then verify the current firmware labels on the camera.
| Camera or guidance | Starting point | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Osmo Action 5 Pro | Try Active SuperNight; use EIS Priority in Low Light with PRO mode disabled; keep the camera steady; add environmental light where possible; test EIS off if needed. | These are DJI’s listed low-light options for this model. EIS Priority and Active SuperNight are not universal settings for every Osmo Action generation. |
| Osmo Action 4 and Osmo Action 3 | DJI discusses manual exposure, ISO 100–12800, a shutter speed of at least 1/200 s, and EIS Priority in Low Light with PRO mode disabled. Compare a clip with EIS disabled. | ISO 100–12800 is the range in DJI’s support guidance, not a recommendation to use 12800. A 1/200-s shutter can make a very dark scene substantially darker. |
| Osmo Action 4 general profile | 4K at 30 fps, Auto shutter, Auto ISO, low-light enhancement when available, RockSteady, and Auto exposure value. | DJI’s cheat sheet gives different frame-rate and field-of-view entries for particular activities. The profile is a general starting point, not a night-action guarantee. |
Using Active SuperNight on Osmo Action 5 Pro
Choose Active SuperNight when the scene is dark and the mode is available in your current recording configuration. Hold the camera as steadily as possible and make a short test while walking or panning. If the result has unstable edges, warping, or excessive softness, repeat the test with EIS disabled and compare the moving subject rather than only the static background.

Manual controls are useful when Auto exposure keeps changing as lights enter and leave the frame. Start within DJI’s stated ISO range, select a shutter appropriate to the movement, and increase ISO only enough to retain the subject. If you choose the 1/200-s starting point for motion, add light or accept a darker, noisier image when the scene cannot supply enough illumination.

For a less demanding scene, the Osmo Action 4 general profile—4K/30, Auto shutter, Auto ISO, low-light enhancement when available, RockSteady, and Auto exposure value—can be a practical baseline. Activity-specific frame rate and field-of-view choices still take priority when your shot requires them.
Insta360 starting points
Ace series: PureVideo
PureVideo is intended for low-light conditions on specified Insta360 Ace models. Insta360’s official FAQ says PureVideo supports a narrower frame-rate range than ordinary Video mode and automatically matches shutter speed to ambient light. That automation can simplify a dark static shot, but it does not remove the motion trade-off. Watch moving edges in a test clip before committing to a long take.
Ace Pro 2
For low-light scenes, Insta360 recommends PureVideo at 4K/30 fps. Its guidance distinguishes movement intensity:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Non-intense motion: the listed recommendation includes Anti Flicker.
- Intense motion: the listed recommendation includes Jitter Blur Reduction.
Use the control that matches the movement in your scene, then verify whether the resulting frame rate, field of view, and stabilization combination remains available on your firmware.
X series, including X5 and X6 guidance
Current recommendations for X6 and X5 list PureVideo for night or low-light scenes, with resolution and frame-rate choices that depend on the exact model. Do not copy a number from an X6 guide into an X5 setup, or vice versa. Open the guide for your camera and firmware, confirm the available PureVideo formats, and make a short test in the lighting where you will actually record.
GO Ultra
GO Ultra PureVideo is designed for low-light environments, and Insta360 documents that slower shutter behavior can create motion blur. Jitter Blur Reduction is a documented option for reducing blur in suitable situations. GO Ultra Auto PureVideo can switch modes based on ambient light, but it has format and feature restrictions; do not assume that Auto PureVideo behaves the same way on another Insta360 model. Check which resolution, frame rate, stabilization, and other controls remain available after enabling it.

Stabilization: when to keep it on and when to test it off
Stabilization is a motion decision, not a brightness setting. It can make walking footage easier to watch, but EIS analyzes successive frames and may need enough detail and suitable motion to work well. In a very dark scene, the algorithm can amplify softness or create geometric distortions.
Recommended Free Tools
DJI advises checking footage with EIS disabled if the result is unsatisfactory and warns that stabilization without suitable electronic-stabilization conditions may reduce results. Use that advice as a test plan:
- Record the same movement with the recommended low-light stabilization option enabled.
- Repeat it with EIS disabled, keeping position, movement, exposure, and lighting the same.
- Compare faces, fine textures, straight lines, and moving edges at the intended delivery resolution.
- Choose the cleaner clip, even if it requires a steadier grip or a physical support.
For a fixed camera, a stable mount and EIS off can preserve detail. For handheld walking, EIS may be worth the processing cost if it does not introduce visible artifacts. There is no reliable brand-wide rule that one state is always better.
Diagnose common low-light failures
The clip is bright but extremely noisy
- Add or move a light closer to the subject.
- Lower ISO until noise is acceptable, then adjust the subject or lighting rather than continuing to amplify.
- Use a support and a slower shutter only if the subject can remain still.
- Check whether the camera’s dedicated low-light mode produces cleaner processing than ordinary Video mode.
The subject is bright but smeared
- Increase shutter speed and make a new test.
- Reduce frame rate if you do not need high-speed motion.
- Add light so the faster shutter does not force an extreme ISO.
- For GO Ultra, remember that Insta360 documents slower shutter behavior as a source of motion blur; Jitter Blur Reduction may be appropriate where supported.
The whole frame pulses or changes brightness
- Use a fixed exposure when your model and shooting situation support it.
- Keep artificial lights and bright windows from repeatedly entering the metering area.
- For an Ace Pro 2 scene with non-intense motion, check the documented Anti Flicker option.
- Test the camera under the actual light source; some lights flicker at frequencies that are not obvious to your eyes.
Stabilization creates warping or mushy detail
- Repeat the shot with EIS off.
- Use a physical support and avoid rapid pans.
- Increase available light so the camera has more detail for stabilization to track.
- On DJI models, do not assume EIS Priority in Low Light is optimal for every scene; compare it with the disabled-EIS result.
The low-light mode or control is missing
Check the exact model, recording format, frame rate, and firmware. Insta360 PureVideo is limited to specified models and may narrow frame-rate choices. DJI’s low-light features and menu labels vary by Osmo Action generation, and some recommendations require PRO mode to be disabled. A control that appears in one guide may disappear when another format or stabilization option is selected.
A practical test matrix
When you have time before an important shoot, make four short clips rather than changing many settings at once:
| Test | Change | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| 1. More light | Add or reposition a lamp while leaving camera settings unchanged. | Shadow detail, noise, and highlight clipping. |
| 2. Motion exposure | Compare a slower shutter with a faster shutter. | Blur on hands, wheels, faces, and camera movement. |
| 3. Processing mode | Compare the dedicated low-light mode with ordinary Video mode at an available common format. | Fine detail, color, noise reduction, and frame-rate restrictions. |
| 4. Stabilization | Compare the recommended EIS setting with EIS disabled. | Edge warping, micro-jitters, softness, and walking comfort. |
Review these clips at the resolution your audience will see. A setting that looks acceptable in a tiny phone preview may reveal smeared detail or stabilization artifacts on a larger display.
Before recording: a model-and-scene checklist
- Confirm the exact DJI or Insta360 model and current firmware.
- Clean the lens cover and check for condensation.
- Decide whether the subject, camera, or both are moving.
- Add practical light whenever the scene allows it.
- Choose a low-light mode only after checking its supported formats and frame rates.
- Use 4K/30 as a starting point where supported and where high-speed capture is unnecessary.
- Set or test shutter speed for the motion you need to freeze.
- Raise ISO gradually and watch for noise rather than chasing a particular number.
- Compare stabilization enabled and disabled in the actual scene.
- Save a short test clip and inspect it before recording the full sequence.
What to expect from manufacturer guidance
The settings above come from official DJI and Insta360 support guidance, not independent side-by-side performance tests. The numeric values—such as DJI’s ISO 100–12800 range, the at-least-1/200-second shutter suggestion for specified Osmo Action models, DJI’s 4K/30 general profile, and Insta360’s 4K/30 Ace Pro 2 PureVideo recommendation—are starting points tied to particular products or contexts. They are not measured low-light performance statistics and do not establish that one brand outperforms the other.
Camera labels, supported frame rates, stabilization behavior, and menu paths can change with firmware. Before a night shoot, open the current guide for the exact camera, confirm which controls remain available together, and test under the lighting and movement you will actually capture.
