If your iPhone lags when you switch between apps, play a graphics-intensive game, record video, or edit photos, diagnose the cause before buying a new phone. The apparent slowdown may come from network congestion, very little free storage, Low Power Mode, heat, battery aging, or one app that has stopped responding. Check those causes in order, change one thing at a time, and reassess the same workload after each change. These steps can remove common bottlenecks, but no setting guarantees a particular speed increase.
First determine what is actually slow
“My iPhone is slow” can describe several different problems. An app that waits for a web page or cloud file is not necessarily suffering from weak local processing. Likewise, one frozen app does not prove that iOS multitasking is failing.
| What you notice | Most useful first check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Feeds, pages, messages, or cloud files take a long time to appear | Try the same task on another Wi-Fi network or in another location | Network congestion, a poor route to a service, or a cellular reconnection can make an app appear slow even when the iPhone itself is responsive. |
| Only one app is frozen or ignores taps | Force-close that app once and reopen it | The app may be unresponsive rather than the whole device being overloaded. |
| Several apps reload and switching feels sluggish | Check free storage, Low Power Mode, temperature, and battery condition | These device-level conditions can affect responsiveness or how much work iOS can perform. |
| Games lose frames or the camera takes longer to process photos | Check whether the phone is hot and whether the task is occurring in direct sun or a hot car | iOS can reduce performance when internal temperature rises. |
| The change began immediately after an iOS update | Allow background update activity to finish, then reassess over the next few days | Post-update work can temporarily change battery behavior and workload. Apple does not promise a universal recovery time for performance. |
Use the same reproducible test after each change—for example, open the same set of apps, return to the demanding game or camera task, and observe whether the symptom changed. Changing several settings at once makes the result impossible to interpret. Note whether the delay is opening an app, switching back to it, loading online content, rendering graphics, processing a photo, or responding to touches. Those are different symptoms and can have different causes.
Compare causes rather than chasing a benchmark
There is no official, model-by-model multitasking benchmark that predicts how many apps an iPhone should keep ready, and Apple does not publish a universal percentage speed gain for any of these steps. Use comparisons that you can repeat: the same app on another network, the same game before and after cooling, or the same app with Low Power Mode on and off. These are diagnostic comparisons, not promises of a measured performance increase.

Use force-closing only for an app that is stuck
Routine swiping away of every app is not a memory-management strategy. Apple’s guidance says unnecessary force-closing can slow the device because reopening an app requires its data to be loaded again. iOS is designed to manage background apps without you manually terminating them.
When force-closing is appropriate
- An app is visibly frozen, will not respond to taps, or cannot complete an action.
- The app repeatedly shows the same unresponsive screen after you return to it.
- You have already separated an app-specific failure from a network or whole-device problem.
How to close the stalled app
- Open the app switcher. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe up from the bottom edge and pause; on a model with a Home button, double-click the Home button.
- Find the unresponsive app.
- Swipe its preview up to close it.
- Return to the Home Screen and open the app again.
If the app is still unresponsive, do not keep repeating the gesture. Continue with the network, storage, power, temperature, and battery checks below. A problem that returns only in one app may need that app’s own update or support channel; the evidence here does not establish a universal fix for a particular third-party app.
Force-closing also should not be confused with restarting the entire iPhone. The useful action here is targeted: close the app that is actually stuck, then test it again. Closing healthy apps simply creates extra reload work when you next switch back to them.
Check free storage before blaming multitasking
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Review the capacity bar, Apple’s recommendations, and the largest apps, downloads, photos, videos, and message attachments. Apple advises keeping at least 1 GB of available storage to help avoid slowdowns.
Offload versus delete
| Choice | What it removes | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Offload App | Removes the app itself while retaining its documents and data | Use this when you need space but expect to reinstall the app and want its local data preserved. |
| Delete App | Removes the app and its associated data from the iPhone | Use this only when removing that app and its stored data is intentional. Confirm that anything important is synced or backed up first. |
A practical storage cleanup sequence
- In iPhone Storage, sort your attention toward unusually large apps, downloaded media, and files you no longer need.
- Read each app’s storage breakdown instead of deleting blindly; an app may contain documents that matter to you.
- Offload an infrequently used app when preserving its documents and data is important.
- Delete an app only after deciding that its associated local data can go too.
- Return to the storage screen and verify that meaningful space has been recovered. Keep at least 1 GB free rather than stopping when only a few megabytes remain.
Freeing storage is a capacity remedy, not a guaranteed benchmark improvement. If you already have ample free space and the symptom occurs only on a congested network or in a hot environment, more cleanup is unlikely to address that specific cause.
Storage questions to answer before deleting anything
- Is the content downloaded for offline use, or can it be obtained again from a service?
- Does the app contain documents, projects, recordings, or other local data that is not synced?
- Would Offload App recover enough space while preserving that data?
- Have you checked the storage screen after cleanup instead of assuming a deletion solved the problem?
The 1 GB figure is Apple’s stated baseline for avoiding slowdowns, not a claim that an iPhone becomes equally fast at every amount above it. Keep more headroom if your workload regularly creates large video files or downloads, but do not expect a particular amount of free space to produce a guaranteed frame-rate increase.
Turn off Low Power Mode when responsiveness matters
Low Power Mode extends battery life by reducing power use and slowing or disabling some features. That trade-off can be sensible when you need the phone to last, but it is not the best setting for a demanding game, sustained camera processing, or rapid app switching when performance is your priority.

Check the setting
- Open Settings > Battery. The exact label or placement can vary with the iOS version.
- Check whether Low Power Mode is enabled.
- Turn it off for the performance test.
- Repeat the workload that felt slow, then turn Low Power Mode back on when battery endurance is more important.
Disabling it does not add processing power beyond what the hardware and thermal conditions can provide; it simply removes one power-saving constraint. Expect the battery-life trade-off to work in the opposite direction. If turning it off makes no difference, leave it off only when the extra battery use is worthwhile and continue checking the other causes.
Reduce heat during demanding workloads
Graphics-intensive games, camera use, setup, restore, updates, and wireless charging can all make an iPhone warm. Warmth by itself is not proof of a fault. However, Apple notes that a high internal temperature can reduce frame rates or increase processing times in some apps.
Cool the phone safely
- Stop or pause the demanding task.
- Move the iPhone out of direct sunlight and away from a hot car, dashboard, or other heat source.
- Let it cool in a moderate environment before repeating the test.
- Avoid adding another sustained load, such as wireless charging, while you are trying to cool it.
Apple’s designed ambient operating range for iPhone and iPad is 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F). That is the stated environmental range for use, not a promise that every demanding workload will run at its fastest rate at every point within it. Do not attempt to cool a hot phone with extreme methods; a gradual return to a moderate environment is the safer approach.
Signs that temperature is the likely variable
- The first minutes of a game or camera session are responsive, then frame rates or processing slow as the phone heats.
- The symptom is much worse in direct sun, a hot room, or a parked car.
- The same app behaves normally after a cooling break.
If the iPhone remains unusually hot during ordinary light use, or displays a temperature warning, stop the workload and seek Apple or authorized service guidance rather than treating it as a routine multitasking setting. A case, charger, or accessory may change how heat is dissipated, but Apple’s troubleshooting guidance does not establish a particular external cooler or storage accessory as a general fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEvaluate battery condition before replacing anything
An aging battery can reduce the device’s ability to deliver peak performance. That does not mean every slow iPhone needs a new battery. Use the built-in diagnostic first.
Where to look
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Open Battery Health or Battery Health & Charging; the wording varies on some older devices and software versions.
- Read the health information and any message about service or a recommended replacement.
Treat a visible Service message or replacement recommendation as the reason to consult Apple or an authorized provider. Battery service is a conditional remedy based on that diagnostic, not a universal speed upgrade. If the battery screen does not indicate a service need, investigate storage, power mode, heat, network behavior, and the affected app first.
Do not infer battery failure from one short session or from heat caused by a demanding game. Record whether the slowdown occurs at different charge levels and workloads, then compare that observation with the Battery Health screen. Third-party battery kits and tools are model-specific and may be inappropriate or unsafe; use an authorized service route when the diagnostic indicates service.

Allow time for work after an iOS update
A slowdown noticed immediately after updating can coincide with background update activity. Apple specifically advises waiting a few days before reassessing post-update battery life. It does not provide a universal number of days after which every performance symptom must disappear, so avoid promising yourself a fixed recovery deadline.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
During this period, keep the phone in a moderate environment, maintain adequate free storage, and compare the same workload rather than judging from a single warm or busy session. If the issue persists beyond the update period, apply the diagnostic sequence again and note whether it affects all apps or only one. A post-update coincidence is not proof that the update permanently reduced performance, just as it is not proof that every slowdown will resolve on its own.
A complete troubleshooting sequence
Follow these steps in order so that each result narrows the diagnosis.
- Classify the delay. Decide whether the app is waiting for online content, one app is frozen, or several local tasks are slow.
- Test the connection. For online work, try another location or Wi-Fi network. A strong signal does not rule out congestion or a cellular reconnection.
- Restart with the stalled app. Force-close and reopen only an app that is actually unresponsive.
- Inspect storage. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage, follow useful recommendations, and keep at least 1 GB free.
- Check Low Power Mode. Turn it off under Settings > Battery for a performance-focused test, then restore it when endurance matters more.
- Remove thermal stress. Pause the workload, leave direct sun or a hot environment, and let the iPhone cool within the 0°C–35°C designed ambient range.
- Check battery condition. Use Battery Health or Battery Health & Charging and arrange service only if iOS recommends it.
- Account for the update. If the symptom followed an iOS update, allow a few days for background activity to settle before judging battery behavior; continue monitoring performance without assuming a guaranteed timeline.
After each step, repeat the same workload. If the result changes only when you switch networks, the problem is probably connectivity rather than multitasking capacity. If cooling consistently restores frame rates, thermal load is the stronger explanation. If one app alone remains broken while other apps switch normally, focus on that app rather than repeatedly closing everything.
Keep a short diagnostic record
Write down the iOS version, the affected app, whether the task is online, the approximate free storage, Low Power Mode status, the environment, and what changed after cooling or switching networks. Note whether the slowdown is immediate or appears after several minutes. This record prevents repeated guesses and gives Apple or an authorized provider useful information if service becomes necessary.

- Do not force-close every app as routine maintenance. Reloading all that data can make later launches slower.
- Do not delete apps merely to make the app switcher look empty. Use storage information and preserve data with Offload App when appropriate.
- Do not assume a new iPhone is the first remedy. Diagnose network, storage, power mode, heat, and battery condition first.
- Do not treat an accessory as a proven fix. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance does not establish external storage or cooling accessories as a general solution, and model-specific battery kits or tools can be inappropriate or unsafe.
- Do not interpret one hot session as a permanent hardware failure. Heat during demanding work can be normal, while sustained unusual heat deserves service advice.
- Do not change every variable simultaneously. If you clear storage, disable Low Power Mode, change networks, and cool the phone at once, you will not know which condition mattered.
- Do not expect a universal number for improvement. Official guidance identifies causes and remedies but does not promise a benchmark result.
When professional service is justified
Contact Apple or an authorized provider when Battery Health shows a service recommendation, the iPhone repeatedly becomes unusually hot during ordinary use, or the problem remains after you have tested the network, freed storage, disabled Low Power Mode for comparison, cooled the phone, and allowed post-update activity to settle. Record which apps are affected, whether the symptom changes on another network, and whether cooling changes it. That information helps distinguish a battery or thermal issue from an app or connectivity fault.
A battery replacement can be appropriate when the device’s diagnostic calls for it. It is not established as a universal cure for every lag complaint, and replacing hardware before checking the simpler causes can spend money without addressing the actual bottleneck. A new iPhone is likewise an excessive first step when the evidence points to a frozen app, network congestion, constrained storage, power-saving mode, heat, or a serviceable battery.

Frequently asked questions
Should I close all apps to free memory?
No. Apple says unnecessary force-closing can slow the device because each app must reload its data when opened again. Close an app when it is frozen or unresponsive, not as routine maintenance.
How much free storage should an iPhone have?
Apple advises keeping at least 1 GB available to help avoid slowdowns. Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage and use Offload App when you want to remove the app while retaining its documents and data.
Will turning off Low Power Mode make games faster?
It removes a power-saving constraint, so it is a reasonable comparison when responsiveness matters. It does not create extra hardware capacity, and battery life may decrease. If there is no observable change, investigate heat, storage, network behavior, and battery condition.
Why does my iPhone slow down after playing a game or using the camera?
Those workloads can raise internal temperature. Apple says some apps may show lower frame rates or longer processing times when the phone is too warm. Pause, leave direct sun or a hot car, and let the device return to a moderate environment before testing again.
What temperature range is designed for iPhone use?
Apple lists an ambient operating range of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) for iPhone and iPad. Staying in that range does not guarantee maximum performance, but hot surroundings can add thermal stress.
When should I replace the battery?
Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health or Battery Health & Charging. A Service message or replacement recommendation is the appropriate reason to consult Apple or an authorized provider. Battery replacement is not a universal fix for every slow phone.

How long should I wait after an iOS update?
Apple advises waiting a few days before reassessing post-update battery life because background activity may continue. There is no universal recovery deadline for every performance symptom. Re-test the same workload and continue the diagnostic sequence if the issue persists.

Should I buy a cooler, external storage, or a new iPhone?
Not as a first response. The official troubleshooting guidance does not establish those purchases as general solutions. Diagnose the network, storage, Low Power Mode, heat, and battery condition first; spend money on service only when the device’s diagnostic supports it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my iPhone slow when I switch between apps?
Separate network delays from local slowness, then check free storage, Low Power Mode, temperature, and Battery Health. Do not routinely force-close healthy apps; close only one that is frozen.
Can low storage cause multitasking lag?
Very little available storage can contribute to slowdowns. Apple advises keeping at least 1 GB free. Check iPhone Storage, offload apps when you need to preserve their data, and delete apps only when their associated data can go too.
