The safest way to make an iPhone last longer is to identify what is draining it before changing settings. Open Settings > Battery, compare today with the recent-day view, and inspect App and System Activity for screen time, background work, weak-signal activity, and notification wake-ups. Then change only the setting connected to the drain you can see.
This approach preserves the features you need. It avoids blanket advice such as disabling every notification, Background App Refresh, mobile data, or location services, and it distinguishes a one-day runtime problem from a battery that has chemically aged.
Start with the Battery screen, not a blanket settings list
Apple’s current iOS 26 troubleshooting guidance says the Battery screen can show whether usage is higher than usual and which apps or system activities are responsible. Open Settings > Battery and review the daily usage graph and the App and System Activity sections. Tap an app or category to see its screen time and background activity, then compare the current day with the recent days shown on your phone. Apple’s iPhone User Guide explains the same battery-usage and health views in more detail at Understand your iPhone battery usage and health.
What to look for
- High screen activity: the display has been on for long periods or at a high brightness.
- High background activity from one app: an app is doing work while you are not looking at it.
- Many notification wake-ups: repeated alerts are lighting the screen or waking radios.
- Low-signal activity: the iPhone is working harder to maintain a cellular connection.
- A system category that is temporarily high: an update, setup task, indexing job, or other system process may still be running.
A high percentage is not automatically a fault. A navigation app, camera session, video call, game, or hotspot can legitimately use substantial power while it is on screen. The useful question is whether the activity matches what you were doing and whether it is unusual for your normal days.

Match one small change to the cause you found
If screen time or brightness dominates
Lower the display to a comfortable level rather than choosing an uncomfortably dim fixed setting. If Auto-Brightness is off, turn it on at Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness; the phone can then adapt brightness to surrounding light. If the display often remains on after you put the phone down, use Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and choose a shorter interval that still suits how you read and work. Apple lists brightness and Auto-Lock as battery suggestions when they are relevant, but neither setting has a universal percentage saving.
If one app has sustained background activity
First decide whether the background work is useful. Messaging, navigation, security, health, and work apps may need to refresh when you are not viewing them. For an app that is clearly doing unnecessary work, reduce its use or adjust that app’s own sync and location options. You can also review Settings > General > Background App Refresh and switch off Background App Refresh for that specific app instead of disabling it globally. Recheck Battery after a normal day; if another app becomes the main source, restore the original setting and target the new cause instead.
If notifications are repeatedly waking the iPhone
Open Settings > Notifications, select the app responsible for the repeated alerts, and turn off only the notification types you do not need. Keep time-sensitive messages, calls, security alerts, or other important notifications enabled. Grouping or reducing promotional alerts can stop frequent wake-ups without sacrificing notifications that matter to you.

If cellular coverage is weak
Low signal can consume power because the phone works harder to maintain a connection. Use Wi-Fi when it is available and, where practical, move to a location with stronger reception. For a known period with no coverage, Airplane Mode prevents repeated connection attempts, but it also removes cellular connectivity until you turn it off, so use it only when that trade-off is acceptable.
If 5G is active but provides no practical benefit
On supported iPhone 12 and later models, iPhone SE (3rd generation), and compatible software and carrier setups, choose 5G Auto (Smart Data mode). The phone can switch to LTE when 5G does not noticeably improve the experience, reducing unnecessary 5G use while retaining 5G when it helps. The usual path is Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data > 5G Auto; labels and availability vary by region and carrier. If you do not see the option, your model, plan, carrier, or region may not support it.
If the drain began immediately after an iOS update
Do not judge battery life during the first few hours after a major update. Setup, indexing, photo analysis, and other update-related tasks can continue in the background and temporarily affect battery life and temperature. Apple’s guidance, published September 18, 2026, says: “If you notice that your battery life has decreased after updating your device, wait a few days and then check again.” Revisit Settings > Battery after several ordinary days. If the same app or system activity remains unusually high, use the targeted steps above rather than assuming the update permanently damaged the battery.

Choose a power mode without giving up more than you intend
Power modes are different from targeted fixes. Adaptive Power makes conditional adjustments on supported newer iPhones, while Low Power Mode deliberately pauses or limits several functions. Compare them before turning either one on.
Recommended Free Tools
| Power mode | Availability and control | What it changes | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adaptive Power | Apple’s iOS 26 guidance lists iPhone 18 Pro models, iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Check Settings > Battery > Power Mode; default-on status differs by model. | Can make performance adjustments, slightly lower screen brightness, limit background activity, and turn on Low Power Mode when charge reaches 20%. | Everyday use when you want automatic, modest intervention and your model supports it. |
| Low Power Mode | Manually available on many more iPhone models from Battery settings or Control Center. | Reduces brightness, sets Auto-Lock to 30 seconds, turns off some visual effects, pauses iCloud Photos temporarily, turns off automatic downloads, stops email fetch and Background App Refresh, and limits ProMotion displays to 60 Hz. | A low-battery or unusually demanding day when you accept those trade-offs temporarily. |
How Adaptive Power behaves
Adaptive Power needs at least seven days to learn your habits. It does not constantly force a slower phone: Apple says it does not manage performance while you use features requiring maximum performance, such as the camera or games with Game Mode enabled. After learning your routine, it can make small automatic changes and may enable Low Power Mode at 20 percent charge. Because the supported-model list and defaults depend on the iPhone and iOS version, open Settings > Battery > Power Mode to see whether Adaptive Power is available and whether it is enabled on your device. Apple describes the feature at Use Adaptive Power to extend the battery life of your iPhone.
When Low Power Mode is appropriate
Turn it on from Settings > Battery or add it to Control Center for quick access. It is useful before a long trip, during an outage, or when you know you cannot charge soon. The mode turns off automatically after the iPhone is charged to 80 percent or higher. The trade-off is deliberate: background refresh and email fetch stop, automatic downloads and some visual effects are disabled, iCloud Photos can pause, Auto-Lock becomes 30 seconds, and ProMotion is limited to 60 Hz. If any of those functions are essential during the day, use a targeted fix or Adaptive Power instead. Apple lists the complete behavior at Use Low Power Mode to save battery life on your iPhone or iPad.

Separate today’s runtime from long-term battery lifespan
A setting that reduces activity today cannot restore capacity lost through chemical aging. Battery lifespan depends partly on temperature history and charging patterns; as a battery ages chemically, it holds less charge. Charging options are therefore mainly about reducing future wear, not promising a specific same-day runtime increase.
Optimized Battery Charging
Optimized Battery Charging reduces the time the iPhone spends fully charged. When the phone predicts that you will remain connected to power, it can delay charging beyond 80 percent and finish closer to when you normally unplug. Apple says the feature may take 14 days to learn and needs at least nine long charges in one location before it can engage reliably. A changing schedule, travel, or short top-ups can delay that learning period. The option is part of the battery charging settings; the exact label and path can vary with model and iOS version. Apple explains the behavior at About Charge Limit and Optimised Battery Charging on iPhone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCharge Limit on iPhone 15 and later
On iPhone 15 and later, Charge Limit lets you select a ceiling from 80 percent through 100 percent in five-percentage-point increments. A lower ceiling can reduce time spent at a high state of charge, but it also means less energy is available on a given day. Choose it when preserving long-term battery condition is more important than maximizing each day’s starting charge; raise the limit temporarily for a long trip or another demanding day. Optimized Battery Charging and Charge Limit address charging wear, so do not treat either as a replacement for diagnosing an app, signal, or screen drain.

Check battery health before making increasingly disruptive changes
Where to find the health screen
On iPhone 14 and earlier, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. The newer screen also reports cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date, which helps distinguish a recent usage spike from an older battery that has accumulated substantial use.
What a Service message means
If Battery Health displays Service, Apple says to consider battery replacement to restore full performance and capacity. A software switch cannot reverse chemical aging. Arrange service or recycling through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, and avoid repeatedly disabling useful features just to compensate for a battery that can no longer hold its original charge.
Temperature and charging habits
Apple notes that a battery’s lifespan is related to its chemical age, “which is more than just the length of time since the battery was assembled.” Temperature history and charging patterns contribute to that aging. Keep the phone away from sustained excessive heat, and use Optimized Battery Charging or a Charge Limit according to whether you need maximum daily capacity or a lower charging ceiling.
A practical one-day troubleshooting sequence
- Record the symptom. Note when the charge falls fastest, whether the iPhone feels warm, and which features you were using.
- Open Settings > Battery. Compare the current day with recent days and inspect App and System Activity.
- Identify the dominant cause. Decide whether screen use, one app’s background work, notifications, weak cellular signal, 5G behavior, or a post-update system task best explains the graph.
- Make one targeted change. Adjust brightness or Auto-Lock, change only the responsible app’s background or notification settings, use Wi-Fi or 5G Auto, or wait several days after an update.
- Recheck under similar use. Compare another ordinary day rather than a travel day, gaming session, or unusually heavy camera day.
- Use Adaptive Power if supported. It is a lower-disruption automatic option, but allow seven days for its learning period.
- Use Low Power Mode for an exception. Turn it on when you need extra time immediately and accept its documented pauses and limits.
- Inspect Battery Health. If capacity is materially degraded or Service appears, pursue battery service instead of stacking more restrictions.
When a power bank is the better answer
A generic USB-C power bank can provide supplemental charging when you will be away from outlets. It extends access to power; it does not reduce consumption, repair degradation, or improve battery health. Check the iPhone model’s connector and charging compatibility before buying, especially if you use an older model with a different port or a cable that does not support the required connection.
Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not disable every notification when only one app is generating wake-ups.
- Do not turn off Background App Refresh globally before checking which app is actually active in the background.
- Do not keep the screen uncomfortably dim; a sustainable brightness and sensible Auto-Lock are more practical.
- Do not assume a battery percentage from one day applies to every iPhone, network, app mix, or battery condition. Apple provides no universal runtime gain for any single setting.
- Do not confuse a lower Charge Limit with a same-day battery-life fix; it trades available charge for a lower charging ceiling.
- Do not ignore a Service indication while progressively disabling features you rely on.
