The safest sequence is simple: check current local smoke and emergency information, keep outdoor air out, filter the room where people spend time, stop making particles indoors, and ventilate only after outdoor air improves. Fine particles in wildfire smoke can irritate the eyes and respiratory system, and a closed house is not automatically smoke-free because air enters through ventilation systems, exhaust fans, cracks and joints.

This is U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidance current through 2026. It cannot replace a local evacuation order or your clinician’s advice. If a fire is nearby, smoke is becoming heavy, authorities issue an evacuation order, or you cannot stay cool and breathe comfortably, leave for a safer location rather than relying on indoor filtration.

Start with safety and current conditions

Wildfire smoke is a mixture of gases and particles. EPA identifies fine particles as the main health threat. They can enter through open windows and doors, mechanical ventilation (including fresh-air intakes and exhaust fans), and small leaks around doors, windows, joints and utility penetrations.

Check AirNow, your state or local air-quality agency, and local emergency alerts for the current AQI, smoke movement and evacuation instructions. Conditions can change within hours; a forecast or AQI value from earlier in the day is not a substitute for live local information.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Follow evacuation orders immediately. EPA warns that a nearby fire, heavy smoke and ash can create serious, immediate safety and health risks.
  • Do not seal yourself into an unsafe house. Keep exits usable, maintain a way to call for help, and leave if heat, smoke, power loss or medical symptoms make the home unsafe.
  • Use your medical plan. People with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart disease, pregnancy, older adults, children and anyone unusually sensitive to smoke should follow their clinician’s instructions and public-health advice.

Seek urgent medical help for severe trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting or blue lips. For less severe but persistent symptoms, contact a health professional.

Create a cleaner-air room

A cleaner-air room is a practical household strategy, not a guarantee that every particle has been removed. Choose a room that household members can occupy comfortably for long periods; a bedroom with an attached bathroom is often convenient.

  1. Close windows and doors. Keep every exit usable and do not block a required emergency path.
  2. Set cooling to recirculate. Use air conditioning, a window unit or fans to stay cool. If central equipment has a fresh-air setting, close the outdoor-air intake or select recirculation while smoke is present.
  3. Filter continuously. Run a compatible central filter, portable cleaner or temporary DIY unit in the room. Put the intake and outlet where furniture, curtains and walls do not obstruct airflow.
  4. Limit time elsewhere. Spend as much time as practical in the cleaner room, especially when outdoor smoke is dense.
  5. Control exhaust. Do not run a bathroom fan or range hood for long periods in the cleaner room; exhaust can depressurize the home and draw smoky air through leaks.

Heat is a real constraint. If the home cannot stay cool with windows closed, EPA advises opening windows during a demonstrably less-smoky period or moving to a cleaner-air shelter or another suitable location. Filtration is never a reason to remain near an advancing fire.

Keep smoke from entering

Windows, doors and leaks

Keep windows and exterior doors shut during smoky periods. Check weather stripping and door sweeps; temporary removable sealing can reduce obvious drafts, but never seal a required exit or interfere with fire-safety equipment. Close fireplace dampers when the fireplace is not in use.

Ventilation and air-conditioning controls

Many homes bring in outdoor air through a dedicated intake, an energy-recovery ventilator, a whole-house fan or another mechanical system. Consult the equipment manual for a temporary recirculation setting. If you cannot identify the control, ask the manufacturer or a qualified HVAC professional rather than guessing. Portable window air conditioners should be operated according to their instructions; keep any outdoor-air vent closed if the model provides that option.

Do not assume that turning off one fan closes every pathway. A bathroom exhaust fan, kitchen hood or whole-house fan can pull replacement air through cracks elsewhere. Use these devices briefly only when needed for moisture or cooking, and avoid them while trying to preserve a cleaner-air room. After conditions improve, restore normal ventilation so moisture and indoor contaminants do not accumulate.

Choose the right filtration path

The best option depends on your building, the room you need to protect and whether the equipment can operate safely. The choices below are complementary, not a universal ranking.

Option Best fit Selection and use criteria Trade-offs
Central HVAC filter A forced-air furnace or central air conditioner that can run frequently Use MERV 13 or higher only when the system can handle it; install a snug, undamaged filter and run the fan as often as practical Airflow capacity and compatibility vary; a technician or manufacturer may need to verify the upgrade
Portable air cleaner One occupied room, a home without forced-air HVAC, or supplemental filtration Smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet; choose little or no ozone output; run continuously at high speed when practical Purchase cost, replacement filters, noise, electrical use and physical size
DIY box-fan cleaner A temporary, lower-cost alternative when a commercial cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable Prefer MERV 13 or higher; use a box fan manufactured since 2012 with a UL or ETL mark; align airflow arrows and seal gaps Performance varies with assembly and maintenance; it may be loud and is not a tested permanent substitute

Use a central HVAC system safely

For a forced-air furnace or central air conditioner, install a high-efficiency filter such as MERV 13 or higher only if the equipment is designed for it. A denser filter can increase resistance and reduce airflow in a system that is not compatible.

  1. Turn off the system before removing the old filter.
  2. Read the size and airflow-arrow markings. The arrow should point toward the furnace or air handler.
  3. Slide the new filter fully into its track. It should fit snugly without bending, crushing or leaving a bypass gap.
  4. Set the thermostat fan from “Auto” to “On,” or use the manufacturer’s equivalent continuous or extended-run setting, when practical.
  5. Watch for weak airflow, unusual noise, icing, overheating or a system fault. If any appears, return to the previous filter or setting and obtain professional advice.

Replace the filter when it is visibly loaded, damaged or due for service. Smoke can load media faster than ordinary household dust, so inspect it during a prolonged event. Keep the filter’s dimensions and model information with your emergency supplies so a replacement can be found quickly.

Size a portable air cleaner by smoke CADR

EPA’s selection rule is a smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) of at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet. This is a sizing criterion, not a promise that a particular device will produce a specific indoor AQI.

Room example Area Minimum smoke CADR using the two-thirds rule
10 ft × 15 ft 150 sq ft 100 CADR
12 ft × 15 ft 180 sq ft 120 CADR
15 ft × 20 ft 300 sq ft 200 CADR

For an irregular room, measure each rectangle, add the areas and apply the same calculation. If ceilings are unusually high, doors remain open to adjacent spaces, or several people occupy the room, a larger unit or more than one unit may be useful; the EPA rule itself is based on floor area. A unit rated only for a much smaller room may still move air, but it will not meet the stated sizing criterion for the full occupied space.

Operate and maintain the unit

  • Prefer a cleaner certified or listed for low or no ozone emissions. EPA recommends choosing a California Air Resources Board (CARB)-certified cleaner for this purpose.
  • Place the unit near the people who need it, with intake and discharge clear of walls, bedding and curtains.
  • Run it continuously at the highest fan setting that people can tolerate while smoke is present. Lower settings filter less air.
  • Inspect the filter. Clean or replace it when it is dirty or begins to smell smoky, following the manufacturer’s procedure.
  • Keep a spare filter if a long smoke episode or supply interruption is possible. Do not wash a filter unless its instructions specifically permit washing.

Noise, electricity use, replacement filters and floor space are part of the real operating cost. Compare those practical factors with CADR and ozone performance rather than choosing solely by a marketing label. No specific brand or model is universally best, and a higher price does not by itself establish better smoke removal.

A portable cleaner does not remove every gas in smoke, cool an overheated home or make an evacuation zone safe. It is one layer of exposure reduction.

Build a temporary DIY box-fan cleaner

EPA describes a temporary cleaner made from a box fan and one or more furnace filters. Commercial units with known CADR are preferred when available because DIY performance depends on the fan, filter area, sealing and maintenance.

  1. Choose a box fan made in 2012 or later that carries a UL or ETL safety logo.
  2. Use a high-efficiency furnace filter, preferably MERV 13 or higher, sized to the fan frame.
  3. Confirm the airflow arrow on the filter points toward the fan’s intake side.
  4. Attach the filter firmly and seal gaps around the frame so air cannot bypass the media.
  5. Place the assembly on a stable surface with unobstructed intake and discharge. Keep it away from water, curtains and walkways.
  6. Run it while people occupy the room, inspect the filter regularly and stop if the fan, cord or assembly becomes hot, damaged or unstable.

Check the filter edge after the fan starts. A loose corner, bowed filter or whistling bypass gap means air is avoiding the filter; switch the fan off and correct the assembly. Keep children and pets from pulling on the filter or cord. This is a temporary household measure, not an equivalent tested product or a reason to ignore fire, heat or evacuation warnings.

Stop adding particles indoors

During smoke events, reduce every avoidable indoor source because filtration must remove both outdoor smoke and what you generate inside.

  • Do not smoke or vape indoors.
  • Avoid candles, incense and aerosol sprays.
  • Do not use fireplaces or gas, propane or wood-burning appliances unless their safe operation is specifically required and properly vented.
  • Skip frying, broiling and other high-heat cooking. Use lower-emission methods and keep cooking brief.
  • Avoid strenuous indoor activity that increases breathing rate when smoke is present.
  • Do not vacuum unless the vacuum has a HEPA filter. Use a damp cloth or mop to capture settled dust instead.

After ash or dusty smoke residue enters, avoid dry sweeping. Lightly dampen hard surfaces and wet-mop them, or use a HEPA-type vacuum on dusty surfaces. Dispose of collected material according to local guidance and avoid redistributing ash into the air. Wash or change cleaning cloths instead of shaking them indoors.

Ventilate after outdoor air improves

Keep the home closed while outdoor smoke is worse than indoor air. When AirNow or your local agency indicates sustained improvement, open windows and doors for a controlled airing-out period, run exhaust fans briefly, and then return systems to their normal settings. If smoke rises again, close up and resume filtration.

There is no universal indoor sensor value that proves a room is safe. A monitor can help you notice trends, but interpret it alongside outdoor AQI, visible smoke, symptoms, ventilation conditions and official instructions. A monitor also cannot tell you whether an evacuation order applies or whether heat has become dangerous.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot common problems

The room still smells smoky

Check for an open window, fireplace damper, fresh-air intake, bathroom fan or range hood. Inspect door and window gaps, confirm the portable cleaner is sized by smoke CADR, and verify that the filter is installed in the correct airflow direction. A smell can persist in fabrics even after particle levels fall, so continue source control and clean settled residue with damp methods.

The HVAC system struggles after installing MERV 13

Turn the system off, confirm the filter size and arrow, and check for a crushed or overloaded filter. If airflow, noise, icing or temperature control remains abnormal, use the previous compatible filter and ask the manufacturer or an HVAC technician whether MERV 13 or a different configuration is suitable.

The house becomes dangerously hot

Do not endure unsafe heat for the sake of keeping windows closed. Move to an air-conditioned cleaner-air location, open windows during a verified cleaner period, or follow local cooling-center guidance. Keep children, older adults and medically vulnerable people under close observation.

Power fails

Use only equipment that can be operated safely from an approved backup source. Do not run combustion appliances indoors, and never operate a generator inside a home, garage or near openings. If you cannot maintain tolerable temperature and air quality, relocate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only one room can be protected

Prioritize the room where vulnerable people sleep or spend the most time. Close its door, keep the cleaner running and avoid repeatedly opening the door. If household members must share the room, account for their comfort, cooling and a clear exit; filtration does not justify overcrowding or unsafe heat.

What to prepare before the next smoke episode

  • Record each room’s floor area and the smoke-CADR target.
  • Check whether your HVAC accepts MERV 13 or higher and locate the outdoor-air intake control.
  • Keep correctly sized replacement filters available.
  • Identify a room with a closable door, cooling and a usable exit.
  • Save AirNow, local agency and emergency-alert information on your phone.
  • Plan transportation and a destination in case evacuation or a cleaner-air shelter becomes necessary.
  • Keep a flashlight, chargers, medications and important contact information accessible in case smoke, heat or a power outage requires a quick move.

EPA’s June 2026 public-health guide, EPA-452/B-26-001, was developed with federal, state and professional health partners. It reinforces that indoor filtration reduces exposure but does not replace emergency decisions, adequate cooling or medical care.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I reduce my exposure to smoke when indoors at home?

Check live AQI and emergency information, close windows and doors, use recirculation, and spend time in a cleaner-air room. Filter that room with a compatible MERV 13-or-higher HVAC filter, a properly sized low-ozone portable cleaner, or a temporary DIY box-fan unit. Avoid smoking, candles, aerosols, fireplaces, high-heat cooking and strenuous activity. Leave if evacuation is ordered, the fire is nearby, heat becomes unsafe or symptoms are severe.

How can air cleaners be used to reduce smoke exposure indoors?

Put a portable cleaner in the occupied room with its intake and outlet unobstructed. Choose a smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet, prefer little or no ozone output, and run it continuously at the highest tolerable setting while smoke is present. Inspect and replace filters according to the manufacturer’s directions. A cleaner reduces particles but does not make an evacuation area safe or guarantee a particular indoor AQI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is MERV 13 always the best HVAC filter during wildfire smoke?

MERV 13 or higher is EPA’s recommended high-efficiency choice when the furnace or central air-conditioner can accommodate it. Denser media can restrict airflow in an incompatible system. Check the equipment manual or ask the manufacturer or an HVAC professional, install the filter snugly with the arrow toward the air handler, and stop if airflow, noise, icing, overheating or fault conditions appear.

What portable air-cleaner size do I need?

Use the smoke CADR printed for the device and compare it with two-thirds of the room’s floor area. A 150-square-foot room calls for at least 100 smoke CADR; 180 square feet calls for 120; and 300 square feet calls for 200. Larger units or multiple units may be useful for high ceilings, open doors or several occupants, but the EPA criterion itself uses floor area.

Are DIY box-fan air cleaners safe and effective?

They are a temporary, lower-cost option when a commercial cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable. Use a box fan made in 2012 or later with a UL or ETL logo, a preferably MERV 13-or-higher filter, correct airflow direction and a tight seal. Keep the assembly stable and away from water and walkways. Performance varies with construction and maintenance, so EPA prefers a commercial cleaner with known CADR when one is available.

Should I open windows to clear wildfire smoke?

Keep windows and doors closed while outdoor smoke is worse than indoor air. Open them only during a sustained, verified improvement reported by AirNow or your local agency, and air out the home for a controlled period. If smoke rises again, close up and resume filtration. If closed windows make the home dangerously hot, move to a suitable cleaner-air location or follow local cooling-center guidance instead of enduring unsafe heat.

Do indoor air-quality monitors prove a room is safe?

No. EPA does not provide one universal indoor sensor value that guarantees safety. A monitor can show trends, but interpret readings with outdoor AQI, visible smoke, symptoms, ventilation conditions and official emergency instructions. A reading cannot override an evacuation order or show that a home is safe from heat, fire or other hazards.

What should I do if smoke enters despite closed windows?

Check for an open window or door, fireplace damper, fresh-air intake, whole-house fan, bathroom exhaust or range hood. Inspect obvious gaps and confirm your cleaner is correctly sized, positioned and operating at the intended setting. Smoke odors can remain in fabrics after particles fall, so use damp cleaning methods and continue source control. Relocate if air quality, temperature or medical symptoms cannot be kept manageable.

The Bottom Line

Check live local conditions first. Keep smoke out, create a cool cleaner-air room, use compatible MERV 13-or-higher or correctly sized low-ozone filtration, avoid making particles indoors, and ventilate only after outdoor air improves. Filtration lowers exposure but never replaces evacuation orders, safe temperatures or medical care.
