To improve your phone’s location, first check that the app is allowed to use precise location, then move somewhere with a clearer view of the sky and give the phone a few minutes to find satellites. On Android, also check the separate Location Accuracy setting. A phone may combine satellite signals with Wi-Fi, cellular networks, Bluetooth scanning, and device sensors, so a location problem is not always a GPS-receiver problem.
The right check depends on what is wrong: an app may lack permission, satellite signals may be obstructed, or the map marker, compass heading, or route may be the source of the confusion. This guide walks through a practical sequence for iPhone and Android, explains what each setting can and cannot do, and covers when to seek device-specific support.
What “GPS accuracy” means on a phone
People often call any misplaced or wandering location marker a GPS problem. But a phone’s displayed location can be an estimate assembled from several sources. Depending on the phone, settings, available signals, and app permissions, it may use GPS satellites alongside Wi-Fi access points, cellular networks, Bluetooth scanning, and device sensors.
Satellite positioning depends on the phone being able to receive signals from visible satellites. Network-based signals and sensors can help provide a location estimate when satellite reception is limited, such as indoors or near large buildings. That assistance does not make a blocked satellite signal pass through a roof or wall, and it is not guaranteed to improve every estimate.

The map marker, the map itself, the compass heading, and the route are related but distinct. A marker that appears to drift does not, on its own, prove that the GPS receiver has failed. If the phone shows the same problem across more than one location app, check permissions and conditions before concluding that the hardware is faulty.
It is useful to separate three questions. First, is the phone estimating the right position? Second, is the app allowed to receive the level of location detail it needs? Third, is the map or navigation display making the position seem wrong—for example, because the marker is right but the heading or route is not what you expected? Those distinctions help avoid changing unrelated settings or treating every navigation glitch as a satellite problem.
Work through these checks in order
- Check location access for the affected app. Make sure the app can use location and, when needed, precise location.
- Check assisted location settings on Android. Location Accuracy and an app’s precise-location permission are separate controls.
- On iPhone, check date and time settings. Apple recommends automatic date, time, and time-zone settings where possible.
- Improve the view of the sky. Move away from obstructions and allow time for the phone to find visible satellites.
- Test the result in context. Compare the location in another app and, if possible, in an open area before treating the issue as a device fault.
Make one check at a time and compare like with like. For example, if you are testing whether open sky helps, keep the app and the phone the same and change only the location. A result indoors is not a clean comparison with a result outdoors because walls and roofs can limit satellite visibility. Likewise, if you change several permissions and settings at once, you may not know which change affected the estimate.
Check whether the app can use precise location
iPhone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Confirm that Location Services is on.
- Select the affected app and review its location access. If exact positioning matters for what you are doing, confirm that Precise Location is enabled.
- Check whether the app is allowed to access location only while in use or continuously, as appropriate for its purpose.
An app with limited or imprecise access may not receive the location information you expect even if the phone itself can determine its position. App permissions are separate: allowing one app to use location does not automatically grant the same access to another.
Consider the task when reviewing access. A map or navigation app generally needs access while you are using it to show your current position. An app that is expected to continue using location beyond the foreground may need a different access level, if that is appropriate to its purpose. The important point is to check the affected app’s own setting rather than assuming that a system-wide location control grants every app the same permissions.
Precise Location is particularly relevant when the task depends on an exact position rather than a broad area. If the location seems broadly right but not exact enough for navigation or another location-sensitive task, check this app-specific control before blaming satellite reception. If the phone is actually indoors or beside tall buildings, however, permission changes alone cannot remove the physical obstruction.
Android 12 and later
Check both the affected app’s precise-location permission and the device-wide Location Accuracy setting. They do different jobs: app permission controls what location that app may receive, while Location Accuracy allows the device to use additional location sources. Android menu names and paths vary by version and manufacturer, so use your phone’s Settings search for “Location” if the labels below do not match.

Turning on one does not automatically perform the other’s job. If an app cannot access precise location, changing the device-wide setting is not a substitute for granting the app the needed permission; if Location Accuracy is unavailable or disabled, an app permission alone does not enable those additional sources.

Do not assume that an Android device has the same location hardware as another model. Some devices may not have every wireless signal, sensor, or GPS capability; a Wi-Fi-only tablet, for example, may not include GPS.
Because Android settings and capabilities vary, a missing toggle or a different label does not necessarily mean something is broken. The available choices depend on the manufacturer, Android version, and device hardware. Check the location settings on the phone in question rather than relying on instructions for a different model.
Use Android’s assisted location when available
On Android devices with Google Play services, Location Accuracy can combine GPS with Wi-Fi access points, cellular towers, and available sensors such as accelerometers, barometers, and gyroscopes. This can help the phone estimate location when satellite reception is unavailable or obstructed, including indoors and near large buildings.

Assisted location is best understood as a way to make an estimate possible or useful when satellite reception is limited, not as a promise that the marker will always be more precise. Its usefulness depends on what signals and sensor information the device can access. Google’s guidance also does not apply identically to every Android device: it describes devices with Google Play services, and not every model has the same GPS, wireless signals, or sensors.
There is also a difference between scanning for nearby networks and joining one. Wi-Fi scanning may help the device detect access points even when you are not connected to a Wi-Fi network; Bluetooth scanning is likewise distinct from pairing a particular accessory. The exact options and behavior can vary. If you change these settings, assess the result in the same place and app rather than assuming that switching a radio off will improve satellite reception.

Correct the clock on iPhone
Apple advises checking the date, time, and time zone, and using automatic settings where possible. On iPhone, open Settings > General > Date & Time and check Set Automatically. This is Apple’s iPhone guidance; menu paths should not be assumed to apply to Android devices.

This is a platform-specific check, not a general instruction to change clock settings on every phone. If the date, time, or time zone is incorrect on an iPhone, verify those values and use the automatic option where possible. If they are already correct, move on to app access and signal conditions rather than repeatedly changing the clock.
Give the phone a better chance to see satellites
Satellite signals can be obstructed by walls, vehicle roofs, tall buildings, and mountains. When practical, move outdoors to an open area with a clear view in several directions. A spot beside a building or under a roof may still block part of the sky.
After moving, wait rather than judging the result instantly. Finding visible satellites can take several minutes, and the estimate may become more accurate gradually as the phone acquires them. Apple notes that the device may use Wi-Fi or mobile networks until GPS satellites are visible again.

- For a location check, stand in an open area rather than next to a wall or beneath a covered structure.
- For navigation, a vehicle roof can obstruct satellite reception; test outside the vehicle if the position remains unstable.

A short wait in open sky is more informative than judging the first marker update.

Apple says Location Services may use mobile data, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth. GPS and cellular location are available on iPhone and iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular models. On Android, Google’s Location Accuracy guidance applies to devices with Google Play services, and not all devices have the same signals, GPS, or sensor data.
The practical comparison is about availability and conditions, not a universal ranking. Satellite positioning depends on visible satellites and benefits from open sky and time to acquire a fix. Work out whether the problem is GPS, the app, or the display
When the marker is wrong, note what is actually wrong before changing more settings.
