You can often make a game feel smoother without replacing the GPU, but the size of the improvement depends on what is limiting performance. Start by identifying whether the problem is low frame rate, stutter, or inconsistent delivery. Then remove unnecessary CPU, memory, and disk load, install applicable Windows and driver updates, and lower the game settings that create the most rendering work. Windows 11 windowed-game optimization and vendor-specific controls can help in compatible cases.
These changes are reversible and cost nothing, but they cannot make old hardware meet every modern game’s demands. Measure one change at a time, keep the setting that improves play without an unacceptable visual or power cost, and stop expecting software tweaks to solve a hardware limit.
Start by identifying the problem you are actually trying to fix
Do not change a dozen options before establishing what is wrong. Launch the affected game in the same resolution, display mode, and graphics preset you normally use. Note whether the problem is a low average frame rate, brief stutter, long pauses when a level loads, or frame delivery that feels uneven even when the counter appears high. Also note whether the problem began recently or has always existed.
Low average frame rate
If the game is consistently slow, its workload may exceed what the processor, graphics processor, memory, or game settings can deliver. Lowering rendering work is the most direct software response, but the useful setting depends on the bottleneck.

Stutter or hitching
Short freezes can come from background programs, memory pressure, disk activity, shader or asset loading, or inconsistent frame delivery. A lower graphics preset may not fix a program that is consuming memory in the background, so check Windows resources before changing image quality.
Inconsistent performance
Performance that is good in one scene and poor in another can reflect a scene-specific setting such as render scale or advanced effects. It can also indicate that the system is switching power behavior or that another process periodically takes CPU or disk time. Record what is happening at the moment of a hitch rather than relying only on an average frame-rate number.
Check CPU, memory, and disk use while the game is running
Microsoft identifies limited storage, excessive startup programs, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets modern requirements as possible causes of a slow Windows device. Its guidance recommends using Task Manager to find processes consuming resources and closing applications you do not need. See Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance.
- Start the game and reproduce the slow scene or hitch.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. If it opens in the compact view, select More details. - On the Processes tab, inspect the CPU, Memory, and Disk columns while the problem occurs. Sort by a column to bring the largest users to the top.
- Close only programs you recognize and are not using. Save work first. A browser with many tabs, a video editor, a file-sync job, or an installer can consume resources that the game needs.
- Return to the game and reproduce the same scene. If the symptom changes, you have identified a background-load contributor; if it does not, restore the program and continue testing another cause.
What not to close
Do not terminate an unfamiliar Windows process merely because it is near the top of a list. System services, security software, device utilities, and driver components may be essential. If you cannot identify a process, leave it running and investigate its publisher or file location later rather than risking an unstable session.
Check startup load separately
In Task Manager, the Startup apps tab shows programs that launch with Windows. Disable only nonessential applications you recognize, and restart before judging the result. This reduces background activity after boot; it does not guarantee a higher frame rate in every game.
Complete the basic Windows maintenance that can remove avoidable slowdowns
These actions are general PC maintenance, not guaranteed frame-rate fixes. They are low-risk and should be completed before making extensive in-game compromises.

Use power settings deliberately, especially on a laptop
Microsoft says the Best performance power mode can let the CPU run at higher performance when needed. The trade-off is higher power use. On a laptop, it can increase heat and drain the battery faster. Select it in Windows power settings when you are plugged in and testing whether power policy is holding performance back; return to a balanced or battery-saving mode when mobility, temperature, or battery life matters more.

Power mode is not a substitute for cooling or a faster component. If selecting Best performance changes nothing, the game may already be limited by another resource. If the laptop becomes uncomfortably hot or loud, treat that as a reason to reduce power demand or investigate the system rather than leaving the most aggressive mode enabled permanently.
Try Windows 11 Optimizations for windowed games when your game qualifies
Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft says it improves performance for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-window mode by transitioning them to the flip presentation model. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, find the relevant game, open its options, enable the optimization when it is offered, and restart the game. The setting does not apply universally: the game must use a supported DirectX version and a supported windowed mode. Choose the correct GPU for a game
Systems with integrated and discrete graphics can expose a per-app graphics preference in the same Windows Graphics area. Add the game’s executable if necessary, open its options, and select the appropriate graphics preference. This is useful only when the system has more than one GPU and Windows is assigning the game to the wrong one. Changing the preference does not increase the capability of either GPU; it ensures that the intended device is used.
Restart after changing the setting
The optimization and per-app preference may not affect a game that is already running. Close the title completely and launch it again before comparing performance. Test the same scene and display mode so that the comparison is meaningful.

Use the game’s own graphics menu and make controlled changes. AMD’s Game Advisor examples include lowering a quality preset, reducing anti-aliasing or ambient occlusion, lowering render scale, and reducing display resolution. Those examples are useful starting points, but menus and setting names vary by game. AMD describes the Game Advisor workflow in its Game Advisor support article, last updated June 13, 2025, for Adrenalin Edition 25.6.1.

Change the preset first when you need a quick test
Move from Ultra or High to the next lower preset, apply it, and replay the same scene. A preset changes several variables at once, so it is a fast way to find out whether the game is simply asking for too much rendering work. If it helps but looks worse than necessary, restore the preset and tune individual settings instead.
Lower render scale before abandoning your display resolution
Render scale draws the game internally at a lower resolution and then displays the result at your chosen output resolution. It can provide a substantial workload reduction while preserving the monitor’s output mode, but fine details and text become softer. Lower it in small steps and stop when the image is still readable during motion.
Reduce anti-aliasing
Anti-aliasing smooths jagged edges but can consume rendering resources. Choose a less demanding method or a lower level when the game offers that control. The visual penalty is most obvious on thin geometry, foliage, fences, and distant edges, so inspect those areas while testing.
Reduce ambient occlusion
Ambient occlusion adds contact shadows and depth around nearby surfaces. Lowering or disabling it can reduce workload with a smaller effect on overall image clarity than lowering the entire resolution, although the scene may look flatter.
Lower display resolution only when necessary
Reducing the output resolution lowers the number of pixels the game must produce, but it makes the whole image less sharp on a fixed-resolution display. Use it when render-scale controls are unavailable or when the higher settings still do not deliver acceptable frame pacing.

Compare after every single change
Apply one setting, play the same section for several minutes, and note both frame-rate behavior and perceived smoothness. If you change resolution, preset, anti-aliasing, and ambient occlusion together, you will not know which compromise produced the improvement. Keep a short record of the original value and the new value so you can undo the experiment.

Use Radeon features only when your hardware and game support them
Radeon controls are not universal Windows features. Their presence and behavior depend on the Radeon model, installed driver, Adrenalin software version, and game support. AMD’s documentation for Radeon profiles is available in Configure Radeon Settings for Ultimate Gaming Experience. The menu labels in that article describe particular software versions, so your current Adrenalin interface may use different names or locations.

Review a per-game profile
Open the Radeon software, select the gaming section, and inspect the profile for the title rather than changing global settings first. A per-game profile limits the effect to one executable and makes it easier to compare with the original configuration. If a control is absent, do not assume it can be enabled by editing a file; it may be unsupported by the GPU, driver, or game.
Consider Radeon Boost where it is supported
AMD describes Radeon Boost as a feature that adjusts resolution in supported games based on user input. During rapid movement, the lower resolution can improve performance; when movement slows, the image can return toward the normal level. AMD notes that choosing a larger minimum-resolution change can improve performance at the cost of image quality. The exact controls and supported titles are listed in AMD’s Radeon Anti-Lag, Radeon Boost, and Radeon Chill guide.
Radeon Boost is not a guarantee of higher frame rates and is not available for every Radeon product or game. If motion becomes visibly soft or the feature causes an unwanted visual change, disable it in the game profile and compare again.
Use Game Advisor as a suggestion, not an automatic verdict
Game Advisor can identify possible adjustments and present recommendations, but AMD’s examples are applied manually. Treat each recommendation as a test: change one item, replay the same scene, and keep it only if the visual trade-off is acceptable. Do not assume a setting recommended for one title, Radeon model, or driver applies to another.

- Write down the game, resolution, window mode, graphics preset, and the exact symptom.
- Reproduce the symptom and inspect CPU, memory, and disk activity in Task Manager.
- Close recognized, unnecessary applications and check whether the same scene improves.
- Install applicable Windows updates and optional display-driver updates, then restart.
- Check available storage and remove only unwanted temporary files; run a malware scan if resource use is unexplained.
- If you use Windows 11 with a supported DirectX 10 or 11 game in windowed or borderless mode, enable Optimizations for windowed games and restart the title.
- If the computer has multiple GPUs, verify the game’s per-app graphics preference.
- Lower one demanding in-game option, starting with the preset, render scale or resolution, anti-aliasing, or ambient occlusion, and compare the same scene.
- If you have a compatible Radeon system, review its per-game profile or Game Advisor recommendations and test them individually.
- On a plugged-in laptop, test Best performance power mode. Keep it only if the improvement justifies the extra heat, fan noise, and power use.
Troubleshoot by symptom instead of applying random tweaks
The frame rate is low everywhere
Confirm that the game is using the intended GPU, then lower render scale or resolution and the overall preset. If the change produces little or no improvement, the limitation may be the CPU, memory, game engine, or hardware age rather than the graphics settings alone.

The game hitches when other programs are open
Use Task Manager during the hitch and close the recognized application consuming the relevant resource. Check startup apps and restart Windows. If disk use remains high, review free storage and any active update, sync, or scan before changing visual quality.
The image looks acceptable but frame delivery feels uneven
Repeat the test with background applications closed and with the game in its normal display mode. On Windows 11, test the supported windowed-game optimization if the title uses DirectX 10 or 11 in windowed or borderless mode. Change only one variable between tests so you can identify which change affects smoothness.
Best performance mode makes a laptop hot
That behavior is consistent with the mode’s higher power target. Use it only while plugged in and only when it produces a worthwhile result. If temperatures, fan noise, or battery drain are unacceptable, return to a less aggressive mode and reduce game workload instead.

Check the Radeon model, Adrenalin version, and game support. AMD’s features are vendor- and hardware-specific, and the documentation may describe an older interface. A missing option is not evidence that the driver is broken or that another brand’s GPU has an equivalent control.
Know when software changes will not be enough
Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant gains from general performance steps. If updates, background-process cleanup, and reasonable graphics reductions do not change the result, the game may be beyond what the current processor, memory capacity, storage configuration, or graphics hardware can deliver at the desired quality. At that point, lowering expectations about resolution or detail may be the only no-cost solution; a component upgrade is a separate decision, not something these settings can substitute for.
Do not buy a cooling accessory merely because a game is slow. Cooling is relevant only when you have established a thermal problem, and the guidance here does not diagnose one or support a particular product. Likewise, no setting can create support for a game or graphics feature that the hardware and driver do not provide.
