For smoother gaming on a Galaxy S21 or S22, start with Gaming Hub > More > Game Booster > Game optimisation and choose Performance when that option is available. Then tune supported games individually, reduce heat and background load, and use the S22-only Pause USB PD feature when its charger and battery requirements are met. These changes can improve consistency, but they do not guarantee a particular FPS increase: the game, One UI version, model, region and thermal protection all affect the result.
What actually improves gaming performance
The most useful controls are Samsung’s Game Booster optimisation modes and, where supported, per-game FPS, resolution and frame-booster settings. Performance mode prioritises responsiveness, Standard balances speed and battery use, and Battery saver extends play time by limiting some gaming functions. Heat management is equally important: a phone that becomes too hot can reduce performance automatically, regardless of the mode selected.
Samsung’s menus change between One UI releases and may differ by model, region and Gaming Hub version. The instructions below follow Samsung’s One UI 7 guidance updated March 19, 2026, while noting where an option may not appear on every S21 or S22.
Check your software and current menu first
Before changing anything, open the game and confirm which controls your phone exposes. Samsung says Game Booster may not be available for every game, and individual controls are not guaranteed on every handset or title.

- Open Gaming Hub. If it is not installed or visible, check the Samsung app screen and your installed software updates.
- Tap More, then Game Booster.
- Open Game optimisation. On One UI 7, the high-performance choice is at the top of this menu.
Older videos may direct you to Game Booster Labs. Samsung says the high-performance option was moved from Labs to the main Game Booster settings menu. If your labels differ, use the closest Game Booster or Game optimisation entry shown on your build rather than assuming the older path is still valid.
Take a screenshot of the menu before changing it if you regularly switch between games. It makes it easier to return to a known setting after an update. Also check the game’s own graphics menu: a title may offer a separate frame-rate cap, quality preset or resolution selector that takes precedence over a phone-level preference.
Choose the right Game Booster mode

Set Performance for a demanding game
- Launch Gaming Hub.
- Tap More > Game Booster > Game optimisation.
- Select Performance.
- Return to the game and play the same demanding section you normally use as a comparison.
Performance mode is a priority setting, not a promise of a fixed frame rate. A game can impose its own FPS cap, and the S21 or S22 can still lower performance if its temperature rises. If the game has a 60-fps limit, for example, selecting Performance does not turn it into a 120-fps title.
When Standard is the better choice
Use Standard if Performance makes the phone noticeably warmer, drains the battery too quickly or offers no visible benefit in the game you play. A steadier session over a longer period is often more useful than a short burst of maximum speed followed by thermal management. Standard is also a sensible starting point when you do not know whether a particular title is CPU-, GPU- or network-limited.
When to use Battery saver
Battery saver is appropriate when you need the longest possible session and can accept lower priority for gaming functions. Do not use it to diagnose a performance problem: a slower result is expected because the mode intentionally limits some functions. Switch back to Standard or Performance for a fair comparison.
Tune individual games when the controls are available
Samsung’s One UI 7 guidance documents individual-game controls for optimisation level, FPS, screen resolution and frame booster. The exact list depends on the game, device and software version. One game may show all four controls while another shows only an optimisation choice, and some games may not be recognised by Game Booster at all.
Find the per-game controls
- Open Gaming Hub and select the game.
- Open the game’s Game Booster controls while the title is running. Depending on the build, this may be a Game Booster panel or an entry in Gaming Hub.
- Look for settings labelled Game optimisation, FPS, Screen resolution or Frame booster.
- Change one setting at a time, then play the same scene long enough to judge sustained behaviour.
How to decide between FPS and resolution
If your priority is aiming, camera movement or competitive responsiveness, favour the highest stable FPS option the game and phone offer. If small text and distant detail matter more, retain a higher resolution and accept that the game may render fewer frames. There is no universal best combination because each game’s engine and graphics workload differ.

When testing, begin with the game’s own recommended preset, then change either FPS or resolution—not both—so you can tell which adjustment helped. A lower resolution can reduce rendering work, but it cannot fix a poor network connection or a game server delay. Conversely, a high frame-rate option may increase power use even when the picture appears only slightly smoother.
Use frame boosting cautiously
A frame-booster option may appear for selected games, but Samsung does not state that it is supported everywhere or that it produces a specific FPS gain. Treat it as an optional per-game experiment, not a guaranteed upgrade. If the image looks inconsistent, controls feel delayed or the phone gets hotter, return to the previous setting. Keep frame boosting disabled while diagnosing a problem so there are fewer variables.
Control heat for sustained performance
Samsung’s thermal guidance, updated February 26, 2026, lists high-demand games and prolonged use among causes of a warm Galaxy device. It also identifies high display brightness, multiple simultaneous tasks, hot surroundings, direct sunlight and poor ventilation. In extreme temperatures, system protection can limit performance, and charging may be restricted.
Improve the playing environment
- Play in a cool, shaded place rather than in direct sun or a hot vehicle.
- Keep the phone on a hard, open surface. Do not cover it with a blanket, pillow or other insulating material.
- Reduce sustained screen brightness if you can still see the game comfortably.
- Close unneeded apps and stop other demanding tasks running at the same time.
- Use an intact, compatible charging cable. Avoid continuing to charge with a damaged or incompatible cable.
Remove unnecessary overlays, video recording and downloads while testing. Samsung specifically identifies multiple simultaneous tasks as a heat contributor; limiting concurrent activity reduces avoidable load even though it cannot change the game’s built-in requirements. Do not expect a particular accessory or cooler to deliver a guaranteed result: Samsung’s guidance does not establish a measured benefit for one.

Pause the game and let the phone cool before resuming demanding play. Do not try to defeat Samsung’s temperature protections; those controls are part of the phone’s safety and performance management. A setting that appears faster for a few minutes is not an improvement if the device then throttles or stops charging. Let it cool naturally in a shaded, ventilated place rather than placing it in a freezer or against a very cold surface.
Why heat can erase a performance setting
Performance mode changes the priority given to gaming, but it cannot override thermal limits. Long sessions, bright displays and warm surroundings can push the phone into temperature-based management. For this reason, a cooler environment and fewer background tasks can matter as much as selecting Performance. Compare sessions of similar length; a setting that wins in the first five minutes may lose after sustained heat builds.
Use Pause USB PD charging while gaming on a supported S22
Samsung documents a Pause USB PD charging when gaming feature for the S22 series in its US Gaming Hub guidance. When active, compatible charger power is dedicated to running the device instead of charging the battery. Samsung’s service guidance specifies the following operating conditions:

Check whether your S22 exposes the feature
- Connect the compatible PPS-capable PD charger.
- Start the game.
- Open Gaming Hub > More > Game Booster.
- Look for Pause USB PD charging when gaming and enable it if shown.
The option may be absent even on an S22 if the model, software version, region, charger or battery state does not meet the requirements. A generic USB-C charger is not automatically suitable; the charger must support both the required PD output and PPS. A 25W label alone is insufficient if PPS is missing, and a higher-wattage charger is not proof of compatibility unless its specifications include PPS.

Pause USB PD is a plugged-in power-management feature, not a general Game Booster and not a cooling guarantee. It is relevant when you want to play while connected to power on a supported S22. Samsung’s documented material does not establish a universal FPS increase or a specific temperature reduction. It also does not make an incompatible charger safe or turn the feature into an S21 capability.
If the feature is enabled, watch the battery indicator and charger behaviour rather than assuming the battery will continue to fill. Its purpose is to route suitable power to the running device. Disable it when you need the battery to charge normally or when the phone becomes hot.
What is different about the Galaxy S21?
Samsung’s current US Gaming Hub guidance lists the Pause USB PD feature for the S22 series and does not list the S21. Do not assume that an S21 can use the same charging option simply because it has a USB-C port.
Samsung’s S21 5G update record for model SM-G991B documents an alternate game performance management mode in a March 3, 2022 Android 12 release while retaining temperature-based performance management. Samsung Electronics Service Korea also described a Game Optimizing Service performance-priority update on March 7, 2022, with rollout planned for the S21 and other listed models under One UI 4.1. Those records are update-history context, not proof that every current regional S21 build displays identical labels.

Set realistic expectations before judging the result
None of Samsung’s cited guidance supplies a comparable S21-versus-S22 FPS test, a guaranteed frame-rate gain, or a measured temperature reduction for these settings. The phone’s processor and graphics limits, the game’s own cap, network latency and thermal protection remain constraints.

If you want to know whether a change helps your setup, compare the same game, graphics settings and scene before and after the change. Keep the session length, brightness and room conditions similar. Judge sustained play rather than the first few minutes, because heat-related management can appear later. Record whether the problem is a low frame rate, hitching, touch delay or online lag; each symptom can have a different cause.
Troubleshoot common gaming-performance problems
The Performance option is missing
- Check Gaming Hub > More > Game Booster > Game optimisation rather than only Game Booster Labs; One UI 7 moved the high-performance choice.
- Confirm that Gaming Hub and the phone software are current.
- Allow for model, region and One UI differences. Samsung says menu availability can vary.
- If the game is not recognised by Game Booster, its controls may not be supported.
The game still stutters in Performance mode
- Check whether the phone is hot, in direct sun or resting on an insulating surface.
- Lower sustained brightness and close unnecessary concurrent tasks.
- Try Standard and compare a longer session; a cooler phone may sustain performance better.
- Look for per-game FPS, resolution and frame-booster controls and adjust one at a time.
- Remember that network latency or the game’s own device limits cannot be fixed by Game Booster.
The S22 charging option is unavailable
- Verify that the phone is an S22-series model supported by your software build.
- Use a 25 W-or-higher PPS-capable USB PD charger.
- Start a game and check that the battery is at least 20%.
- If the menu still does not appear, the feature may not be available for your region, model or software version.
The phone becomes too hot while charging and playing
Stop demanding use and let the device cool. Move out of direct sunlight, remove insulating coverings, reduce brightness and close other demanding activity. Charging can be restricted at high temperatures; continuing to force a hot session is not a safe performance strategy. If unusual heat persists during light use, seek Samsung service rather than attempting to bypass protection.

Recommended order of changes
- Open Game Booster and confirm the current menu path on your One UI build.
- Choose Performance for a demanding game, or Standard if heat and battery use are already concerns.
- Adjust one supported game’s FPS, resolution or frame-booster setting at a time.
- Move to a cool, shaded, ventilated surface; lower sustained brightness and close unneeded tasks.
- On a supported S22, enable Pause USB PD charging only with the documented charger, game and battery conditions.
- Compare the same scene over a sustained session. Keep the setting that remains smooth without excessive heat.

Will Performance mode make every game run at 120 FPS? No. The game may cap FPS, the display mode may impose a limit, and thermal management can reduce speed during a long session. Samsung does not publish a universal gain for S21 or S22 settings.
Should I always use Performance? Not necessarily. Use it for a demanding title when responsiveness matters, but Standard can be better for long sessions if Performance adds heat or drains the battery without a visible improvement.

What charger should I buy for the S22 feature? Look for a USB-C Power Delivery charger rated at least 25 W that explicitly lists PPS. This is an optional accessory for supported S22 plugged-in play, not a general performance upgrade. Confirm the charger’s current specifications before purchase.
