The quickest ways to improve fuel efficiency are to drive smoothly, avoid unnecessary idling, keep tires at the pressure specified for your vehicle, and follow its maintenance schedule. These steps can reduce avoidable fuel use, but the result varies with the vehicle, traffic, weather, and driving conditions; no single savings percentage applies to everyone.
Start with the changes you can make on your next trip
Fuel efficiency is affected by both how a vehicle is driven and how well it is maintained. Driving changes require no repair appointment, while tire checks and scheduled maintenance help keep the vehicle operating as intended. Work through the following habits in order, adapting them to road conditions and your vehicle’s manual.
- Accelerate gently. Avoid rapid starts and hard acceleration when a slower, smooth increase in speed is practical. Repeatedly speeding up and slowing down wastes fuel compared with keeping a steady pace where conditions allow.
- Look ahead and leave room. Watch traffic far enough ahead to notice when it is slowing. When safe, ease off the accelerator and coast down rather than accelerating toward a stop and braking late. Keep a safe following distance; saving fuel is not a reason to follow too closely.
- Keep speed steady when appropriate. On a highway, cruise control may help maintain a consistent speed, but use it only when traffic, weather, terrain, and the vehicle make it appropriate. It is not a substitute for paying attention or adjusting to changing conditions.
- Observe posted speed limits. Do not exceed the limit to chase a supposed fuel-saving speed. The most efficient speed depends on the vehicle and circumstances, so there is no one speed to recommend for every driver.
- Reduce unnecessary stops and starts. Combine errands when practical so separate trips can become one route. This is a planning option, not a reason to make a longer or less safe trip.
These habits are useful because they can be tried immediately and do not depend on buying a product or booking service. The best next step is not necessarily the one with the largest headline percentage: it is the one that fits your usual driving and can be done safely and consistently. If most of your fuel use comes from stop-and-go traffic, anticipating slowdowns and avoiding aggressive acceleration may be more relevant than a highway-only technique. If you rarely drive with a roof rack, removing it when unused is an easy way to avoid carrying unnecessary drag.
Why smooth driving helps—and what the numbers mean
Natural Resources Canada’s 2024 guidance says that varying speed up and down between 75 and 85 km/h every 18 seconds can increase fuel use by 20%. That figure describes the stated speed-change scenario; it is not a prediction that every driver who varies speed will use 20% more fuel.

The same agency says five fuel-efficient driving techniques can lower fuel consumption by as much as 25%. Treat this as a potential combined result, not an individual guarantee. Your outcome depends on the vehicle and conditions, and the guidance does not establish that any one technique will deliver that amount by itself.
The US Department of Energy’s 2022 guidance estimates that aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by up to 30% at highway speeds and up to 40% in stop-and-go traffic. These are government guidance figures, not measured outcomes for every vehicle or a promise of savings from changing one habit. The practical takeaway is to avoid unnecessary aggressive acceleration and braking while still driving at a safe, lawful pace.
In everyday driving, “smooth” does not mean driving slowly regardless of circumstances or refusing to respond to traffic. It means avoiding speed changes that serve no purpose when the road is clear and conditions permit a steady pace. If traffic ahead is compressing, easing off early can avoid the cycle of accelerating into a gap and then braking sharply. If another driver’s actions or a hazard requires immediate braking, safety takes priority over fuel use.

Cruise control can help reduce needless speed fluctuations on suitable stretches, but it is not a universal efficiency setting. On a winding or hilly road, in poor weather, or in changing traffic, the driver may need to adjust speed directly. Use the vehicle’s system as intended and stay alert; a steady indicated speed is not more important than control, safe spacing, or responding to road conditions.
Posted speed limits remain the rule. Fuel efficiency varies by vehicle and circumstances, so advice to target one universal “best” speed would be misleading. Nor should a driver speed in the belief that a particular pace will save fuel. A lawful, appropriate pace and fewer unnecessary accelerations are the practical goals.
Cut idling when it is unnecessary
An engine running while a vehicle is stationary consumes fuel without moving the vehicle. The US Department of Energy estimated in 2022 that idling can use about one-quarter to one-half gallon of fuel per hour. The rate is an estimate, so actual use will vary by vehicle and conditions.

Natural Resources Canada recommends switching off the engine for stops longer than 60 seconds, except when in traffic. Do not apply that threshold mechanically: idling guidance can differ with weather, the vehicle, and the situation. Keep the engine running when traffic or safety requires it, and follow vehicle-specific instructions and local guidance where applicable.

The point is to avoid avoidable fuel use, not to switch the engine off in a moving traffic queue or where doing so would create a safety concern.
Think of the 60-second recommendation as context-specific guidance, not an instruction to switch off at every brief pause. Traffic queues, weather, vehicle systems, and safety needs can change what is appropriate. If you are unsure whether repeated restarting is suitable for your vehicle or situation, check its manual and local guidance rather than applying a timer without judgment.
Check tire pressure every month
Natural Resources Canada’s advice is direct: “Measure your tire pressure every month.” Use the pressure specified on the vehicle’s tire-information placard or in the owner’s manual. Do not treat the maximum pressure printed on a tire sidewall as the vehicle’s target unless the vehicle manufacturer specifies it.
- Find the vehicle’s recommended pressure. Check the tire-information placard or owner’s manual for the correct value for your vehicle.
- Measure the tires. Use a tire-pressure gauge; the tool enables an accurate check, but measurement and correct inflation—not owning the gauge—are what matter.
- Compare each reading with the vehicle specification. If pressure needs adjustment, use the vehicle’s recommended value rather than the tire’s sidewall maximum.
- Repeat monthly and when seasonal temperature changes warrant it. A monthly check is the baseline recommended by Natural Resources Canada; changing temperatures are another reason to check.
Natural Resources Canada’s 2024 guidance says tires underinflated by 56 kPa (8 psi) can increase fuel consumption by up to 4% and reduce tire life by more than 10,000 km. Both are upper estimates tied to that stated underinflation level, not a forecast for every tire or a guarantee of a particular fuel or tire-life change.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA monthly check is a practical compromise between ignoring pressure and checking constantly. Seasonal temperature changes are another useful prompt to recheck. The process is straightforward: find the vehicle-specific target, measure with a gauge, and compare the readings with that target. A tire-pressure gauge is an optional, directly relevant tool for doing the measurement at home; the gauge itself does not improve mileage, and no particular brand or model is necessary to follow the basic advice.

- PROCESS LEVEL ACCURACY: This heavy duty tire pressure gauge is calibrated manually to ANSI B40.1 Grade A (±1% of span)
- PRESSURE RANGE 0-75 PSI: ETENWOLF’s tire gauge can measure pressure of pickup, motorcycle, truck, bike, SUV, RV or ATV
- EASY TO READ IN THE DARKNESS: The large glow dial helps you clearly read the pressure at night or in low light
- EASY TO USE: 360 degree swivel chuck allows you to measure and take a reading from a tire valve at any angle
- ACCURACY IN EXTREME WEATHER: PSI gauge works normally even in extreme cold or hot weather
Do not substitute the number on the tire sidewall for the vehicle’s recommended pressure unless the manufacturer specifically says to do so. The sidewall maximum is not automatically the correct operating target for your car. If the placard or manual is unclear, use the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance rather than guessing. The same approach applies if a reading is unexpectedly different from the specified value: take the vehicle instructions seriously, and seek qualified assistance if you cannot determine what to do.
Keep up with scheduled maintenance
Use the maintenance schedule in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. A generic schedule cannot account for every vehicle, so the manual is the appropriate starting point for routine service rather than an arbitrary interval or a one-size-fits-all product recommendation.
Ontario’s Official MTO Driver’s Handbook also recommends regular alignment checks to reduce uneven tire wear and fuel consumption. If you notice a sudden change in fuel economy or a warning light, consult the manual or a qualified mechanic instead of assuming a particular repair is needed. A change in fuel use alone does not identify its cause.
Maintenance advice is most useful when it is specific to the vehicle. The schedule in the manual is the guide to routine service; an internet-wide interval or product suggestion cannot account for every model and operating condition. Alignment checks are another item to discuss as part of keeping tires wearing evenly. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation’s handbook links regular alignment checks with reducing uneven tire wear and fuel consumption, but that is not a reason to assume a particular alignment problem exists without an assessment.
If fuel economy changes suddenly, first consider whether something about the driving conditions has changed, but do not diagnose a mechanical problem from fuel use alone. Follow any warning light instructions in the owner’s manual and consult a qualified mechanic when needed. Avoid treating a generic additive, service, or repair as a guaranteed solution: the appropriate response depends on the vehicle and the cause of the change.
Reduce avoidable drag and weight
Remove roof racks and other external accessories when they are not needed, and avoid carrying unnecessary cargo where practical. These steps can reduce avoidable aerodynamic drag or weight. The available guidance does not give a universal savings figure for either change, so it is better to treat them as low-effort ways to remove what the vehicle does not need than to expect a specific percentage improvement.

- HIGH ACCURACY: Every ETENWOLF's pencil tire gauge is calibrated to ANSI B40.1 Grade B, it is accurate to 2% of span in the middle 50% of range and 3% of span in the lower and upper 25% of range. Each ETENWOLF pencil tire pressure gauge is manually calibrated and has its unique calibration number printed on the pencil
- WIDER RANGE: ETENWOLF's tire gauge offers 2 pressure ranges: 10-50PSI, 20-120PSI for all types of vehicles
- ALL METAL: ETENWOLF tire gauges are made of all solid metal, zinc alloy head and stainless steel body, they are durable and can be used for many years unless you lose them
- DEFLATION: You can also use ETENWOLF's tire gauge to deflate tires when the tire pressure is overinflated
- 16 CAPS IN 2 CASES: ETENWOLF even offers 16 valve stem caps, so you won't worry about losing tire caps anymore
This is a simple check to include when preparing for a trip or clearing out the vehicle. Keep equipment that is needed for safety or the journey; the aim is to remove only what is unnecessary. A rack or accessory that is in use should not be removed merely to chase an unquantified benefit. Similarly, reducing cargo means leaving behind unneeded items, not compromising emergency preparedness or carrying required equipment.

There is no product comparison to make or single cost ranking that fits every driver. Instead, prioritize by effort, immediacy, relevance to your driving, and whether the step calls for vehicle-specific advice:
- Immediate, no appointment: drive smoothly, anticipate traffic, observe speed limits, avoid unnecessary idling, and remove unneeded cargo or accessories when practical.
- Simple recurring check: measure tire pressure monthly with a gauge and use the placard or manual as the target. A gauge is optional equipment for checking; correct measurement and inflation are the important actions.
- Vehicle-specific or service-related: follow the owner’s maintenance schedule, and consult a qualified mechanic if a warning light appears or fuel economy changes suddenly. Alignment checks can be part of a maintenance discussion.
This order is a way to get started, not a claim that one action is always more valuable than another. A driver can make a smooth-driving adjustment on the next trip, while a pressure check requires a reading and access to the manufacturer’s specification. A maintenance concern may require expert help. Choose the step that addresses a likely source of avoidable use without spending money on an unsupported fix.
A simple routine to make the changes stick
Before or during each trip
- Accelerate gently and avoid repeated speed swings.
- Look ahead, preserve a safe following distance, and coast down when safe instead of braking late.
- Use cruise control only when the road, traffic, weather, and vehicle make it suitable.
- Stay within posted limits and avoid unnecessary idling.
- Before setting out, consider whether separate nearby errands can be combined safely and practically.
Once a month and as conditions change
- Measure tire pressure with a gauge and compare it with the vehicle placard or manual.
- Recheck when seasonal temperature changes warrant it.
- Remove external accessories or cargo that are no longer needed.
At scheduled service or when something changes
- Follow the maintenance schedule in the owner’s manual.
- Ask about alignment checks to help reduce uneven tire wear and fuel consumption.
- For a sudden fuel-economy change or a warning light, consult the manual or a qualified mechanic rather than guessing at a repair.
Keeping the routine modest makes it easier to follow. The monthly tire check is a repeating task; smooth driving and avoiding avoidable idling are decisions made as conditions arise; scheduled maintenance follows the vehicle’s own timetable. You do not need to change everything at once. Start with the habits that fit your regular route, then build in the check and maintenance reminders that are relevant to your vehicle.

Driving smoothly, limiting unnecessary idling, checking tire pressure, and maintaining the vehicle address different sources of avoidable fuel use. Official figures describe specific scenarios or a potential combined effect; they do not establish a guaranteed result for an individual car. Begin with the habits and monthly check you can control, then use the vehicle’s own maintenance guidance when service is due or performance changes.
Natural Resources Canada’s 2024 figures illustrate both the potential and the limits of general advice: the 20% increase describes a particular pattern of speed changes, the up-to-4% tire figure describes tires underinflated by 56 kPa (8 psi), and the up-to-25% figure refers to five techniques together. They are not interchangeable estimates and should not be added together to predict a personal result. The US Department of Energy’s aggressive-driving and idling estimates are likewise broad government guidance, not a guaranteed outcome for a particular vehicle.

Vehicle type and use matter, as do traffic, weather, and route. A change in city or highway driving can affect fuel use even if the vehicle itself has not changed. Treat fuel-efficiency advice as a set of ways to avoid unnecessary consumption, rather than a promise that every driver will see the same result. Safe operation, posted limits, and the vehicle maker’s guidance always take priority.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest way to improve fuel efficiency right away?
Drive smoothly: accelerate gently, look ahead to anticipate slowdowns, and avoid unnecessary speed changes. When safe, ease off and coast down rather than accelerating toward a stop and braking late. Keep a safe following distance and observe posted speed limits.
How often should I check tire pressure?
Natural Resources Canada recommends measuring tire pressure every month, and checking again when seasonal temperature changes warrant it. Use the pressure on your vehicle’s tire-information placard or in its owner’s manual, not the sidewall maximum unless the vehicle manufacturer specifies that value.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I turn off my engine if I am stopped for more than a minute?
Natural Resources Canada recommends switching off the engine for stops longer than 60 seconds except when in traffic. Treat that as guidance rather than a rule for every situation: weather, the vehicle, traffic, and safety can affect what is appropriate. Follow vehicle-specific instructions and local guidance.
Does cruise control always save fuel?
No. Cruise control may help keep a steady speed on a suitable highway stretch, but use it only when traffic, weather, terrain, and your vehicle make it appropriate. It is not a substitute for paying attention or adjusting to changing conditions.
What should I do if my fuel economy suddenly gets worse?
A sudden change by itself does not identify the cause. Check the owner’s manual, follow instructions for any warning light, and consult a qualified mechanic rather than assuming a particular repair or product is needed.
Can I add the published fuel-saving percentages together?
No. The figures describe different scenarios and measures, not savings that can be added to predict an individual result. Actual effects depend on the vehicle and driving conditions.
The Bottom Line
Start with smooth, attentive driving and avoid unnecessary idling; check tire pressure monthly against the vehicle’s own specification, then follow its maintenance schedule. These practical steps can reduce avoidable fuel use, but savings vary by vehicle and conditions—safety and manufacturer guidance come first.
