Start with the game’s own Performance or frame-rate mode, then enable 120Hz output or variable refresh rate (VRR) only if your console, display, connection, and the game all support it. A faster mode can lower internal resolution or reduce visual effects, so compare modes during real gameplay and keep the one whose image quality still works for you.
Start with the game’s frame-rate settings
Look in the game’s graphics, video, or display settings for a Performance, Frame Rate, or similar mode. Game-level options determine how that title balances responsiveness and visual detail. A console-level preference may influence supported games, but it does not guarantee that every game offers or follows the same settings.
Compare the options in a demanding part of the game, not only in a quiet menu. Pay attention to motion, fine detail, lighting, effects, and whether performance stays consistent when the scene gets busy. If the faster option makes the image noticeably less appealing, switch back: a higher target is not automatically the better experience.
Know what a faster mode may change
Frame rate and image quality are game-specific tradeoffs. A game may reduce its internal rendering resolution or simplify effects, lighting, crowds, or other detail to meet a higher frame-rate target. Some games adjust internal resolution dynamically as the action becomes more demanding.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The resolution sent to your TV is not necessarily the resolution at which every frame was rendered. Microsoft’s developer guidance describes lowering internal resolution and upscaling to maintain a full-screen image, while keeping interface text at native resolution for legibility. How sharp the result looks depends on the game’s implementation; upscaling does not guarantee that a faster mode will look identical to a slower one.
For example, Bethesda’s Starfield settings guidance distinguishes Visuals priority, which keeps the highest resolution and full detail for effects, lighting, and crowds, from Performance priority, which lowers internal resolution and those details. Both modes may dynamically adjust internal resolution in heavier scenes. Those are Starfield-specific settings, not universal Xbox options.
Understand the difference between 120Hz and VRR
120Hz output
A 120Hz display refreshes up to 120 times per second, but that specification alone does not make a game render 120 frames per second. The display, console output, game, and signal path must all support the intended mode. A game may offer a particular frame-rate target only under particular display conditions.

Variable refresh rate
VRR synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh rate with the console’s output. PlayStation says this can reduce frame-pacing artifacts and screen tearing; it does not promise that the game will render more frames. The visible effect varies with the TV, game, and selected visual mode. If applying VRR to an unsupported game causes unexpected behavior, PlayStation advises turning it off.
Do not treat VRR and 120Hz as interchangeable settings. Check whether the game supports the feature, whether the display and its selected HDMI input support it, and whether the console is configured for it. A compatible display enables modes; it cannot improve a game’s rendering by itself.
Check the settings for your console
PlayStation 5
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output to inspect or change the console’s output. PlayStation says the PS5 detects TV capabilities and selects the best available resolution automatically; you can also choose Automatic or a supported resolution. For 120Hz output or VRR, the display and the game must support the relevant feature. ALLM can switch a compatible TV to low-latency mode during gameplay.

For a missing or unstable 4K 120Hz signal, follow PlayStation’s 4K resolution troubleshooting guidance. Check that the display supports 4K at 120Hz and has current firmware, that the PS5 is connected to the right HDMI port, and that any required enhanced HDMI format is enabled on the TV. Sony also recommends checking the PS5 resolution and transfer-rate settings, connecting directly or checking equipment between the console and display, and using the included PS5 cable or an Ultra High-Speed Cable rated for 4K 120Hz. A replacement cable is not automatically necessary.
Xbox Series X|S: game settings vary
There is no single Xbox setting that guarantees a particular game’s frame-rate options. Use the title’s own settings and check the display configuration when the game makes support conditional on 120Hz or VRR.
In Starfield, Bethesda documents targets of 30, 40, 60, or Uncapped on a 120Hz VRR display; without that display setup, 30 or 60 targets remain available. Bethesda recommends Performance priority for 60 fps and above. On a non-VRR display, a 60 fps target may tear. These choices apply to Starfield, not every Xbox game.

For Fortnite, Epic’s instructions require both console-level and in-game changes. On Xbox Series X|S, enable 120Hz in TV & Display Options, then turn on 120 FPS in Fortnite’s Video settings. On PS5, choose the Performance Mode game preset, then enable Fortnite’s 120 FPS mode. The game option may not appear if support is unavailable. Epic also warns that an AV setup without 4K at 120Hz could affect output resolution.
Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo says Switch 2 supports output up to 2160p, but 120Hz output is supported only at 1080p or 1440p, and only when both the TV and software support it. VRR is described for compatible software and TVs while playing in TV Mode. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 display settings rather than assuming every game or display can use these features.

Compare modes by what you actually see and feel
Use these questions while trying a game’s available modes:
- Frame-rate target: What targets does the game actually offer, and under what display conditions?
- Consistency: Does the game hold its target in demanding scenes? If VRR is supported, does it make variations look smoother?
- Image quality: Does the mode change internal resolution, upscaling, ray tracing, effects, lighting, crowds, or fine detail?
- Display path: Can your TV or monitor support the intended resolution and refresh rate on the HDMI input you are using?
- Your preference: Is the more responsive feel worth any visible reduction in detail in this particular game?
Make the comparison during normal play, including busy scenes. Keep the mode that gives you the best balance rather than assuming the highest number is always preferable.
When a display or cable change is relevant
Try available game and console settings before buying hardware. A 120Hz VRR TV or monitor is relevant only if the current display is the limit on a mode you want to use. It cannot create a higher rendered frame rate when the game does not offer one.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If the console does not deliver the expected signal, first verify the display’s specifications, the HDMI port, TV input format, console output setting, and any equipment in the signal path. For PS5 4K 120Hz troubleshooting, Sony’s guidance allows the included cable or an Ultra High-Speed Cable rated for that signal; it does not say every player needs to purchase a new cable.
What to expect from these changes
There is no universal frame-rate gain from enabling a console setting. The result depends on the game, its chosen mode, the console, and the connected display. Official support guidance describes available features and configuration, not a guarantee that a given title will look or perform a certain way on every setup. Try the free settings first, then judge the tradeoff in the game you play.
