To improve Enshrouded performance, first identify whether you have low average FPS, inconsistent frame times, a one-time shader-compilation pause, or network lag. Then establish a repeatable baseline, check your hardware and game build, and change one graphics or server setting at a time. There is no officially documented universal graphics tweak that fixes stuttering on every PC.
Start by identifying what “lag” actually means
Enshrouded problems that feel similar can have completely different causes. A graphics bottleneck lowers rendered frames. A frame-time problem produces visible hitching even when the FPS counter looks high. A first-launch pause may be normal shader preparation. Packet loss or a dropped connection is a network problem, not a rendering problem.
| What you observe | Most likely category | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Low FPS most of the time | Rendering performance | Resolution, graphics settings, GPU load, CPU load and VRAM use if available |
| Brief hitches while the displayed FPS remains high | Frame-time inconsistency | When the hitch occurs, whether it repeats in the same place, and frame-time data if your overlay provides it |
| A black screen for one or two minutes on the first Steam Deck launch | Initial client and shader preparation | Whether later launches and gameplay are normal |
| Players teleporting, voice or actions arriving late, dropped connections, or no servers in the list | Network or server connectivity | Wi-Fi or wired connection, packet-loss symptoms, and whether the server list loads |
Community discussions include reports of stutter at 60 FPS or more, but those reports are individual experiences rather than a controlled diagnosis. Treat a high FPS number as insufficient evidence that frame pacing is smooth.
Write down the PC or Deck model, CPU, graphics card and VRAM, system RAM, resolution, refresh rate, game version and when the issue began. A problem that starts immediately after a game or driver update deserves a different investigation from a problem that has existed since installation. Also note whether the hitch appears in one settlement, during traversal, in combat, while loading assets or only in multiplayer. These details make later comparisons meaningful.

Check the official PC requirements before changing settings
Keen Games’ requirements page, dated January 24, 2024, gives a useful compatibility baseline. It does not promise a particular frame rate, and a computer that meets the listed minimum or recommended hardware can still experience stutter caused by software, drivers, shaders, CPU load, memory pressure or a game update.
| Component | Minimum listed tier | Recommended listed tier |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 | Windows 10 |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X class | Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X class |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics card | NVIDIA GTX 1060 6 GB or AMD RX 580 6 GB | NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super 6 GB or AMD RX 6700 XT 6 GB |
| Storage | 60 GB available storage is listed | 60 GB available storage is listed |
Compare your actual CPU model, GPU model and VRAM rather than assuming that a newer product name automatically equals the recommended tier. If your graphics card is below the listed recommended class and your measurements show the GPU is the limiting component, a GPU upgrade may help. It will not automatically solve CPU, memory, shader or network problems.
The requirements are from 2024. Check the live official requirements page before making a purchase, because later builds can change compatibility and performance expectations. The figures are baselines for running the game, not a promise of a fixed quality preset, refresh rate or stutter-free experience in every area.
Update Enshrouded and check version-specific notes
Performance advice can become obsolete after a patch. Confirm that Steam has finished downloading the game update before comparing settings. Then read the current official hotfix notes for wording that matches your symptom.
The official hotfix index available for this guide lists entries through June 29, 2026. In that index, Hotfix #42 is version 0.9.1.2 and Hotfix #37 is version 0.9.1.0. Those entries establish the version context of that historical index; they do not prove which build is current when you read this article or guarantee an FPS improvement.
Hotfix #27, dated June 25, 2025, says the recommended NVIDIA driver was updated to the latest version to help stability on RTX 50-series cards. That is version-specific historical guidance, not a timeless instruction to install a particular driver and not a measured FPS gain. Use the driver recommendation in the current notes for your own build.

Record the exact version, reproduce the hitch in one repeatable location and look for a matching entry in the current notes. A patch may change shader behavior, CPU load or the availability of a graphics option, so the same setting can behave differently over time.

- Choose one location and activity. Use the same settlement, outdoor area, combat situation or traversal route. A crowded base and an empty cave can produce very different CPU and GPU loads.
- Keep display conditions unchanged. Record resolution, display refresh rate, window mode and graphics settings. Do not compare a 1080p run with a 1440p run and call the difference a setting improvement.
- Record the game build. Note the version shown by Steam or the game’s current information screen, especially if the hitch appeared after an update.
- Measure more than the average FPS number. Record the average FPS if your overlay provides it, but also note repeated visible hitches and any frame-time graph. A single momentary reading is not a benchmark.
- Observe CPU and GPU behavior when available. A GPU that remains near full load while lowering resolution improves smoothness suggests a graphics-limited case. If lowering resolution changes little, investigate CPU, memory, shader, driver or game-version causes instead.
- Repeat the run. Test the same route more than once. If a hitch happens only during the first pass and disappears afterward, it may be related to one-time asset or shader preparation rather than a setting that needs to be permanently lowered.
Keep a short log with the date, build, resolution, setting changed and result. Note both average FPS and whether the hitch was easier, unchanged or worse. This prevents memory bias when several changes appear to help. Do not use an assumed “correct” utilization percentage or a universal FPS cap as a diagnosis. The official information does not establish one threshold that applies to every Enshrouded system.
Adjust graphics settings as a controlled test
There is no current official setting sequence documented as a reliable stutter fix for all PCs. Use a small-step test plan instead of copying a preset that promises a guaranteed result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When the GPU appears to be saturated
Start with the least disruptive test: lower the output resolution or overall visual quality by one step, then repeat the same route. If frame pacing and FPS improve, the graphics workload is contributing to the problem. Keep the change only if the visual trade-off is acceptable.
If the change does not affect the hitch, restore the previous value. Continuing to lower image quality cannot fix a problem that is not being caused by the GPU workload. The official material does not identify a universally most-expensive Enshrouded option, so do not present a particular shadow, foliage, view-distance, upscaling or lighting setting as a guaranteed answer.
When lowering resolution does not help
A hitch that survives a substantial resolution reduction points away from a simple pixel-rendering limit. Check for CPU pressure, insufficient memory, background work, shader preparation, driver issues or a game-version change. Compare the same scene with nonessential background applications closed, but keep a record of what you changed so you can undo it.
Do not assume that an upscaler or frame-generation option exists on your hardware or in your current build. Availability and behavior depend on the GPU, driver and game version. If an option is present, test it separately and measure the result rather than treating its name as proof of a fix.

When the counter is high but motion still hitches
Focus on frame-time consistency. Note whether the hitch repeats when entering a particular area, opening a menu, loading assets or performing a specific action. A stable-looking average FPS can hide occasional long frames, which are perceived as pauses. Keep the same route and compare the frequency and severity of those pauses after each single change.
If one change makes average FPS higher but the visible hitch remains, it did not solve the frame-pacing problem. Revert it unless you prefer the visual result, then continue investigating the repeatable trigger.

Steam Deck: use the official defaults first
Keen Games says Enshrouded works on Steam Deck with the recommended default settings and advises using those defaults while further optimization work is carried out. Start there rather than importing a desktop configuration or stacking undocumented tweaks.
The developer also notes that the first launch can show a black screen for one to two minutes while the client and shaders prepare. Treat that stated first-launch behavior separately from recurring gameplay stutter. If the black screen occurs on every launch, gameplay remains affected afterward, or the wait is substantially longer, record the Deck model, game version and what happens after the game finally opens before changing settings.

Do not count the initial preparation screen as a gameplay frame-rate result. If later sessions are smooth but the first launch is slow, the symptoms are different from repeated hitches while exploring.
Separate multiplayer delay from local rendering stutter
Network symptoms include packet loss, connection drops, delayed actions, players appearing to teleport and a server list that will not populate. Those symptoms require network troubleshooting; lowering graphics quality does not repair a lost packet.
For Wi-Fi packet loss or dropped connections
The official multiplayer guidance recommends trying wired Ethernet when Wi-Fi packet loss is occurring. Retest the same session after switching connections so you can distinguish a network change from a graphics change.
For the documented connection or server-list problem, the guidance also includes flushing DNS and clearing Steam’s download cache. These steps target name resolution or Steam client state, not a local GPU bottleneck. If your game already renders smoothly offline but multiplayer actions arrive late, prioritize this branch.

For a dedicated server under CPU or RAM pressure
Keen Games states that every available player slot increases performance impact. If the dedicated server is constrained by CPU or memory, reduce the maximum number of slots and retest with the same number of active players. This is a server-side capacity adjustment, not a graphics setting for each player’s PC.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Do not infer that reducing slots will improve a client whose own GPU is saturated. Apply it when the server itself is the constrained component and the symptoms are shared by connected players or correlate with server load. Change the slot limit once, repeat the same session and record whether the group’s symptoms change.
Use a safe rollback and recovery routine
When a change makes stuttering worse, return to the last known configuration instead of piling on more tweaks.
- Restore the previous graphics value and repeat the same scene.
- Write down the game version, driver version, resolution and the exact setting changed.
- Check the latest official hotfix notes for a known issue that matches the timing of the problem.
- Separate first-launch shader preparation from a hitch that occurs repeatedly during normal play.
- For multiplayer symptoms, test a wired connection and the documented Steam networking steps before changing image quality.
- On a dedicated server, change maximum player slots only when CPU or RAM pressure is plausible, then retest.
A clean rollback is especially important when advice from community posts conflicts. Those posts can reveal useful symptom descriptions, but they do not establish that a tweak works across different GPUs, drivers, resolutions or game builds. Avoid stacking a driver change, several graphics changes and a network reset in one session; you will not know which action affected the result.
When a hardware upgrade is justified
Consider a graphics-card upgrade only after the baseline shows a sustained GPU limit and your current card is below the official recommended graphics tier. A lower resolution or quality test should produce a measurable improvement before you spend money; otherwise the bottleneck may be elsewhere.
More graphics memory alone is not proof that a card will eliminate stutter. CPU performance, system RAM, drivers, shader compilation and the game build can all affect frame pacing. The listed requirements specify 16 GB of system RAM and 6 GB on the example minimum and recommended GPUs, but those figures are compatibility baselines rather than a promise of smooth performance in every scene.

Before purchasing, compare the live requirements with your complete system, not just the GPU. If a CPU or memory limit remains after lowering resolution, spending on a faster graphics card may leave the hitch unchanged. Make the purchase decision only after a repeatable test identifies graphics workload as the limiting factor.

- Is the issue a first-launch black screen on Steam Deck? Allow the stated one-to-two-minute preparation period, then judge gameplay separately.
- Is the issue packet loss, a dropped connection or a missing server list? Follow the network branch: test wired Ethernet for Wi-Fi packet loss, then use the documented DNS and Steam download-cache steps where applicable.
- Is average FPS low and GPU load high? Test a lower resolution or visual-quality step and repeat the same scene.
- Does lowering resolution not change the hitch? Restore the setting and investigate CPU, RAM, shaders, drivers, background activity and game-version changes.
- Does the problem affect multiple players on a dedicated server? Check server CPU and RAM pressure and reduce maximum player slots.
- Did the issue begin after an update? Record the exact build and read the current official hotfix notes before adopting older advice.
This sequence keeps rendering, frame pacing, startup preparation and networking separate. It also gives every adjustment a measurable before-and-after comparison, which is more reliable than applying an undocumented “best settings” list.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Enshrouded stutter when the FPS counter says 60 or more?
A high average FPS does not prove that every frame arrives evenly. Occasional long frame times can feel like pauses even when the counter remains high. Repeat the same route, watch a frame-time graph if your overlay provides one, and record whether the hitch repeats in a particular area or action.
What should I change first for low FPS?
First confirm the game version and establish a baseline in the same scene. If GPU load is high, lower resolution or overall visual quality by one step and retest. If that does not change the hitch, restore the setting and investigate CPU load, memory pressure, shaders, drivers or a recent update instead.
Are Enshrouded’s minimum requirements a guarantee of smooth performance?
No. Keen Games lists Windows 10, 16 GB RAM, a Core i5-6400 or Ryzen 5 1500X class CPU, and a GTX 1060 6 GB or RX 580 6 GB class GPU as minimum examples. The recommended tier lists a Core i7-8700 or Ryzen 7 2700X class CPU and an RTX 2070 Super 6 GB or RX 6700 XT 6 GB class GPU. These are compatibility baselines, not a guaranteed frame rate or stutter-free result.
How long should the first Enshrouded launch take on Steam Deck?
Keen Games says the first launch can show a black screen for one to two minutes while the client and shaders prepare. Treat that one-time preparation separately from recurring gameplay stutter. If the delay happens on every launch or gameplay remains affected, document the Deck model and game version.
Can a wired connection fix FPS stutter?
A wired connection can help when the real symptom is Wi-Fi packet loss or dropped connections. It does not fix a local GPU or CPU bottleneck. Use the network branch for delayed actions, teleporting players, connection drops or a server list that will not populate, and use a graphics baseline for render-time hitching.
Will reducing dedicated-server player slots improve my PC’s FPS?
It can help when the dedicated server is constrained by CPU or RAM, because Keen Games says each available slot adds performance impact. It is not a general graphics fix for a client whose own GPU is saturated. Reduce slots only when server load is plausible and retest with the same active players.
Should I buy a new graphics card to stop Enshrouded stuttering?
Only after a repeatable test shows a sustained GPU limit and your current card is below the official recommended class. A lower-resolution test should improve the result before you spend money. If it does not, CPU, RAM, shaders, drivers or the game build may be responsible instead.
Is there a guaranteed best graphics preset for Enshrouded?
No universally reliable preset is documented. Graphics options and upscaling or frame-generation features can vary by hardware, driver and game version. Change one option at a time, compare the same scene and revert changes that do not improve measured frame pacing.
The Bottom Line
Diagnose the symptom before changing settings: separate low FPS, uneven frame times, Steam Deck’s one-time startup preparation and multiplayer networking. Check the live requirements and current hotfix notes, test one reversible change in a repeatable scene, and upgrade hardware only when measurements identify the GPU as the bottleneck.
