To improve FPS and reduce stuttering in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on PC, start with the correct hardware tier, required security settings, SSD installation and current graphics driver. Then run the in-game benchmark, record its CPU, GPU, frame-rate, ping and input-latency results, and change one graphics or upscaling option at a time. This is the most defensible launch-day method because the available publisher guidance is pre-release: it documents requirements and diagnostic tools, but does not establish a universal setting or a verified post-launch stutter fix.

The PC version launches on October 23, 2026; campaign early access is scheduled for October 16. Requirements are described as valid at launch and may change, so keep your game build, driver version and benchmark notes when you compare results after updates.

Check your PC against the right performance target

Activision publishes three desktop-PC tiers. They describe the hardware needed for a particular use case, not a guaranteed frame rate on every map or mode. All tiers require broadband internet and DirectX 12 compatibility. Intel Arc graphics cards require Resizable BAR, and supported Intel and AMD processors need the AVX instruction set. Windows 10 or 11 must be fully updated as specified, and TPM 2.0 plus Secure Boot are required.

Use case Operating system and processor Memory and graphics Storage and stated target
Minimum playability Windows 10 64-bit (latest update); AMD Ryzen 5 1400 or Intel Core i5-6600 8 GB RAM; Radeon RX 470, GeForce GTX 970/1060 or Intel Arc A580; 3 GB video memory SSD with 115 GB available; minimum to play, not an FPS guarantee
Recommended multiplayer Windows 11 64-bit; AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or Intel Core i7-8700 16 GB RAM; Radeon RX 6600 XT, GeForce RTX 3060 Ti or Intel Arc B580; 8 GB video memory SSD with 115 GB available; publisher target is 90 FPS in multiplayer at High settings
High-quality ray tracing Windows 11 64-bit; AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel Core i7-10700K 32 GB RAM; Radeon RX 9070 XT or GeForce RTX 5070 Ti; 16 GB video memory SSD with 115 GB available; high-quality ray tracing at 4K upscaled

How to interpret the tiers

  • The minimum row is an eligibility line. A system that meets it may still need reduced resolution, lower effects and an appropriate upscaler for a consistent experience.
  • The recommended multiplayer row is the publisher’s comparison point for a High-preset multiplayer goal. It is not an independently measured benchmark.
  • The ray-tracing row is a separate, much heavier visual target. It should not be used as the baseline for a competitive low-latency setup.
  • Laptop GPU names do not always perform like their desktop counterparts. Check the exact laptop model, power limit and vendor documentation instead of assuming that a mobile part equals the desktop card in the table.

Complete the launch prerequisites before tuning graphics

Verify platform and security requirements

  1. Install the current supported 64-bit Windows release for your chosen tier and apply pending Windows updates.
  2. In your motherboard firmware, confirm TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are enabled. If you use an Intel Arc GPU, confirm Resizable BAR is enabled as well.
  3. Check that the processor supports AVX and that the system exposes DirectX 12.
  4. Install the game on an SSD with at least the publisher’s stated free-space requirement. An SSD is a launch prerequisite here, not a promise of higher average FPS.

Use the recommended graphics drivers

The requirements guidance lists AMD driver 26.7.1, NVIDIA driver 616.56 and Intel driver 32.0.101.8974. Driver support is time-sensitive: Activision says an Advanced Shader Delivery-compatible NVIDIA driver is planned for October 21, before launch. Check the current official requirements page near release and again after major game or driver updates rather than treating these versions as permanently optimal.

Prepare Advanced Shader Delivery

Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) supplies precompiled shaders ahead of time on supported PC platforms. The publisher’s PC feature article says to install the Xbox PC app if you want to use ASD on a supported PC platform. Keep the graphics driver current, allow the shader-delivery process to complete, and avoid judging performance while compilation or a first-run cache build is still in progress.

Establish a repeatable baseline with the built-in benchmark

Do not change a dozen options before you know whether the limit is the CPU, GPU, frame pacing, storage preparation or network. Modern Warfare 4 includes a simulated multiplayer benchmark designed for this purpose. It reports average FPS, CPU, GPU, ping and input latency, with statistics for individual zones and suggestions for settings.

The publisher describes it this way: “Zero in on performance stats with the built-in Benchmark Tool, which will run a simulated multiplayer sequence that tests your system’s, displaying real-time information including Average FPS, CPU, GPU, Ping, and Input Latency.”

Baseline procedure

  1. Launch the game after Windows and graphics-driver updates have finished.
  2. Use one resolution, display mode, preset and upscaling mode that represent your real play. Write them down.
  3. Open the graphics or performance menu and start the built-in Benchmark Tool.
  4. Record average FPS, the CPU and GPU readings, ping, input latency and any zone-level results. Save a screenshot or a short note with the game build and driver version.
  5. Run the same benchmark a second time if the first run followed a driver install, shader delivery or major settings change. Use the later run as your comparison baseline.

Zone suggestions are diagnostic hints, not proof that a particular recommendation fixes a specific stutter. The sources document what the tool displays but do not provide a universal interpretation for every system.

Identify whether the problem is rendering, frame pacing or networking

GPU-limited behavior

If the GPU is consistently busy while the CPU has headroom, reduce GPU-heavy options first: output resolution, ray-tracing quality, volumetric effects, shadows and reflections. Change one option, rerun the same benchmark and compare both average FPS and the feel of frame delivery. A higher average can still feel uneven if individual frames arrive irregularly.

CPU-limited behavior

If the CPU is the busy component while the GPU is underused, lowering resolution may have little effect. Reduce simulation, view-distance or other CPU-oriented settings that the game exposes, close unnecessary background applications and use a sensible frame-rate cap. Do not infer a CPU fault from one short spike; compare the same benchmark zone across repeated runs.

Shader or asset preparation

Stutter during the first launch, after a driver change or after a large game update can coincide with shader or asset preparation. Let Advanced Shader Delivery or the game’s own compilation process complete where available, then benchmark again. If the same hitch remains in a repeatable zone after preparation, record the build and driver before seeking an official update; the pre-launch material does not verify a specific shader-related fix.

Network symptoms versus local stutter

Ping and input latency are reported alongside FPS and CPU/GPU data. A stable frame rate with changing ping points to a network symptom rather than evidence that a new graphics card will solve the problem. Conversely, a local frame-time hitch with steady ping should be investigated as a rendering or CPU/GPU issue. Keep these measurements separate in your notes.

Tune resolution, upscaling and image quality methodically

Choose the output resolution first

Set the resolution you actually intend to play. A 4K upscaled ray-tracing target has a different workload from 1440p or 1080p competitive play, so do not compare an average FPS result from one resolution with another and call it a setting improvement.

Evaluate each supported reconstruction option

The official feature list names FSR Redstone, DLSS 4.5, XeSS 3 and Filmic SMAA T2X, plus a sharpness slider. Which options appear or perform best depends on the GPU and driver support. Test only modes available on your hardware:

  1. Keep the resolution and quality preset fixed.
  2. Select one upscaler or Filmic SMAA T2X and choose its quality mode.
  3. Adjust sharpness only after the reconstruction mode is selected.
  4. Run the identical benchmark and compare average FPS, GPU load, image stability and input latency.
  5. Repeat for another supported mode if image quality or frame pacing is unsatisfactory.

No official source supplies an independent ranking of these technologies. Avoid claiming that one is universally fastest or clearest; the useful result is the mode that meets your own resolution and latency target without objectionable artifacts.

Change expensive effects in a controlled order

Once the upscaler is selected, lower the settings that impose the largest cost on your measured bottleneck. For a GPU limit, start with ray tracing, volumetrics, reflections, shadows and high-resolution effects. For a CPU limit, test view distance, object detail and simulation-oriented options. Keep texture quality high only when video memory allows it without streaming or hitching; reducing textures can help a card near its memory limit but may not raise FPS on a CPU-bound system.

Use a frame-rate cap deliberately

A cap below the level your system can sustain can reduce sudden swings in GPU usage and make frame delivery more consistent. Select a cap appropriate to your monitor and measured performance, then verify it with the benchmark. The cap is a pacing tool, not a substitute for meeting the game’s hardware requirements.

Reduce avoidable sources of hitching

  • Leave free space on the game SSD so Windows and the game can manage temporary files and caches.
  • Close overlays, capture tools and background workloads one at a time when diagnosing a problem; do not assume every overlay causes stutter.
  • Use the same display mode and refresh-rate configuration while comparing runs.
  • After changing a driver, game build or major graphics option, allow any shader or asset preparation to finish before drawing conclusions.
  • Keep a log containing date, game build, driver, resolution, preset, upscaler, cap and benchmark results. This prevents a perceived improvement from being confused with a changed test condition.

Decide whether an upgrade is justified

Upgrade only after the baseline identifies a sustained hardware limit and you have selected the target resolution and visual features. The recommended multiplayer tier provides a practical reference for a High-settings multiplayer goal, while the ray-tracing tier represents a substantially more demanding 4K-upscaled visual target. Moving from the minimum tier to either target can require changes to the GPU, CPU, memory and storage together; replacing one component may simply expose another bottleneck.

When a GPU upgrade is reasonable

A GPU upgrade is most defensible when the benchmark repeatedly shows high GPU utilization, insufficient video memory for your selected textures or ray tracing, and a stable CPU with adequate headroom. Compare the replacement to the official tier that matches your goal rather than buying for an unspecified “stutter fix.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a CPU or memory upgrade matters more

If the CPU is saturated while the GPU is underused, a faster graphics card is unlikely to solve the limit. Systems below the recommended memory tier may also experience asset pressure or background-task contention. Confirm the diagnosis with repeated benchmark runs before spending money.

Why an SSD purchase is not a frame-rate upgrade

The game requires SSD storage, so moving an installation from an unsuitable drive can satisfy the prerequisite and improve loading behavior. It does not, by itself, establish a higher average FPS or cure every rendering hitch.

Launch-day troubleshooting branches

The game will not start or reports a security problem

Recheck 64-bit Windows, DirectX 12, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Verify AVX support for the processor and Resizable BAR for Intel Arc. These checks come before graphics tuning because a missing prerequisite can prevent a valid performance test.

FPS is low from the first benchmark run

Compare the machine with the appropriate table row, confirm the game is using the intended GPU, select the actual display resolution and test a supported upscaler. Record the benchmark’s CPU/GPU readings before changing additional options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Average FPS looks acceptable but motion still hitches

Repeat the same benchmark after shader or asset preparation, inspect zone-level results and compare frame pacing rather than average FPS alone. Test one expensive effect at a time and note whether the hitch follows a particular zone. If it remains reproducible on the same build, keep the evidence for an official support report; pre-launch documentation does not identify a verified universal fix.

Ping or input latency is the outlier

Separate the network result from rendering results. Stable FPS and GPU/CPU readings with abnormal ping should be investigated as connectivity or server behavior, not automatically as a graphics setting problem.

What is known—and not yet known—about stuttering fixes

The publisher’s material establishes hardware tiers, a benchmark, named upscaling technologies and Advanced Shader Delivery. It does not provide third-party benchmark data, measured comparisons among FSR Redstone, DLSS 4.5, XeSS 3 and Filmic SMAA T2X, or a confirmed post-launch setting that eliminates stutter on all systems. Real-world behavior can change with game patches, drivers, maps and hardware combinations.

Activision states: “Specs are valid for product launch and may be updated in the future.” Treat every result as tied to its date, build and driver. Re-run the same baseline after updates instead of assuming that an older recommendation remains valid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pre-launch checklist

  • Match your CPU, GPU, RAM, video memory and Windows version to the target tier.
  • Confirm DirectX 12, AVX, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot; enable Resizable BAR for Intel Arc.
  • Install the game on an SSD meeting the stated free-space requirement.
  • Install the current publisher-recommended graphics driver and check for an ASD-compatible release before launch.
  • Install the Xbox PC app if you intend to use Advanced Shader Delivery on a supported platform.
  • Run the built-in benchmark and record average FPS, CPU, GPU, ping, input latency and zone results.
  • Change one resolution, upscaling or quality setting at a time, then rerun the same benchmark.
  • Keep notes of build, driver, resolution, preset and results for post-launch comparisons.

This workflow can make your setup measurable and repeatable. It cannot guarantee a particular FPS number or prove a universal stutter cure before release.
