Turning off Fire TV viewing-data sharing limits the activity that Fire TV can use for cross-app personalization. There is no documented way to keep that particular sharing route disabled while restoring recommendations that depend on it. You can still make the experience more useful by selecting the correct profile, searching and browsing deliberately, cleaning up Continue Watching and Recents, and deciding whether to allow sharing from selected apps rather than every supported app.
First determine which privacy control you changed. Fire TV uses similar-sounding settings for different kinds of data, and the fix depends on whether you disabled Share App Viewing and Content Info or Device Usage Data.
Identify the setting you turned off
Amazon separates app activity sharing from operating-system usage data. Treating them as one “Viewing Data” switch can lead to the wrong conclusion about why recommendations changed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Setting | What it controls | Effect of turning it off |
|---|---|---|
| Share App Viewing and Content Info | Viewing and content information shared by supported third-party apps, including activity that can support Continue Watching and personalization integrations. | Fire TV cannot use that shared activity through the documented Content Personalization API. Cross-app discovery and activity synchronization can therefore be less useful. |
| Device Usage Data | Operating-system device-usage data used for purposes such as product improvement and customized marketing offers. | Stops processing in that category, but it does not disable every device feature, every advertising-data process, or data related to Amazon services such as Prime Video. |
| Collect App Usage Data | A separate privacy control listed in Fire TV privacy documentation. | Do not assume this has the same scope as app viewing-and-content sharing or Device Usage Data. |
| Interest-based Ads | A separate advertising preference. | Changing it does not automatically restore or disable app activity sharing. |
If your goal was to stop supported third-party apps from sending viewing information, check Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings > Manage Sharing From Apps. Amazon says this page is available on Fire TV devices that have a Continue Watching row. If you changed Device Usage Data instead, the recommendation impact is not equivalent: Amazon says that control does not affect processing related to Amazon services such as Prime Video.

What privacy opt-out means for personalization
Amazon’s Content Personalization documentation states the consequence of opting out directly: No | Customer experience is not personalized through the Content Personalization API.
The documentation was last updated July 14, 2026. That statement applies to the API and the data exchanged through that integration; it should not be expanded into a claim that every Fire TV or Prime Video recommendation disappears.
The integration can use shared watch activity and watchlist additions or removals. If app sharing remains off, there is no documented setting that recreates those API-based recommendations without allowing the same data-sharing route. Fire TV may still show content from other sources, and individual apps can have their own recommendation systems and privacy practices.
The practical tradeoff is therefore specific: less cross-app activity is shared with Amazon, while Fire TV has less shared activity available for personalized discovery, resume information, and related Continue Watching behavior. Turning off Device Usage Data is a different choice with a narrower operating-system-data description and explicit exceptions.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check and adjust app-sharing controls
Use the following procedure to confirm the state of the setting and choose the narrowest change that matches your privacy preference.
- From the Fire TV home screen, open Settings.
- Select Preferences, then Privacy Settings.
- Open Manage Sharing From Apps. If this option is missing, the device may not support the Continue Watching feature, or the menu wording may differ by model and software version.
- Review the participating-app controls. Amazon describes three choices on this page: manage participating apps individually, switch sharing from all supported apps on or off, and control whether viewing activity syncs across Fire TV devices.
- Leave sharing off if minimizing this data flow is your priority. If you want better cross-app discovery, enable only the participating apps whose activity you are comfortable sharing, or enable sharing for all supported apps.
- Review the separate activity-sync control. Sharing and synchronization are related but not identical choices; use the sync option only if you want activity to follow you across compatible Fire TV devices.
App-specific control is useful in a household where one service contains sensitive viewing history or where you want to limit sharing to the apps you use most. Enabling one app does not mean that every other app is automatically enrolled unless you select the all-supported-apps option. You can revisit the list later if your viewing mix or privacy preference changes.
Use the right profile for every viewer
Fire TV profiles separate viewing history, recommendations, watchlists, and watch progress. Continue Watching reflects the profile currently in use, so a wrong profile can make the home screen look irrelevant even when sharing is configured as intended.
Switch before watching
- Open the profile picker from the Fire TV home screen.
- Select the person who is about to watch.
- Confirm the selected profile before launching an app or starting a title.
Keeping household activity in the correct profile prevents one person’s viewing from muddying another person’s recommendations. It does not recreate app-shared history that was never sent to Fire TV, and it cannot make an unsupported device gain profile features.

Know which devices support profiles
Amazon lists profiles as unavailable on Fire TV (1st Generation), Fire TV (2nd Generation), and Fire TV Stick (1st Generation). Feature availability and the exact profile interface vary by device. On supported hardware, profiles can improve the quality of the activity that Fire TV already has; they are not a workaround for opting out of app sharing. If your model has no profile picker, use direct search and the app’s own profiles or history tools where available rather than assuming the Fire TV account is malfunctioning.
Find titles directly when recommendations are limited
When you prefer to keep app sharing disabled, use Fire TV’s direct discovery tools instead of relying on the recommendation rows.
Search for a title or app
- Choose Find from the Fire TV home screen.
- Enter a movie, show, or app name with the on-screen keyboard or voice search, where available.
- Open the result and choose the service or app that offers it.
Direct search is a discovery method, not a way to train Fire TV’s cross-app recommendation system. Availability of results and labels can vary by device, region, installed apps, and current software. If a title is not returned, search within the relevant streaming app as well; Fire TV’s result set depends on participating services and the apps installed on that device.
Browse categories and free or live sections
Use Find to browse content categories. Some devices also display Free and Live sections. Amazon says Fire TV experiences differ across devices, so do not expect every model to show the same rows or menu names. Browsing is useful when you know the type of program you want but not a title; it does not require enabling app viewing-data sharing.
Clean up Continue Watching without changing privacy settings
Removing stale entries can make the home screen more useful, but it affects the row itself rather than proving that Fire TV’s recommendation model has been retrained.
Remove one item
- Highlight the title in Continue Watching.
- Press the Menu button on the remote.
- Select Remove from Continue Watching.
Netflix titles must be removed inside the Netflix app. Amazon also cautions that hidden third-party content can return if it is watched again. A reappearing title therefore does not necessarily indicate that the privacy setting failed. Check that you removed the item while the intended profile was active, since each profile has its own viewing context.
Do not confuse Continue Watching with Recents
The home-screen guide describes a separate action for recent items: highlight an item in Recents, press Menu, and choose Remove from Recent. Featured categories cannot be removed. Neither command is a universal “not interested” control, and neither guarantees a system-wide change to recommendation ranking. Removing a row entry is useful housekeeping, but it does not erase activity from an individual streaming service.

Choose between privacy and broader personalization
There is no single best setting for every household. Use this comparison to decide whether the improvement in convenience is worth the additional sharing.
| Choice | Activity shared with Amazon | Personalization through the documented API | Cross-device activity convenience | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keep app sharing off | Supported third-party app viewing and content information is not shared through that control. | Not available through the Content Personalization API. | Shared activity cannot provide the same app-sharing-based synchronization. | Readers who prioritize minimizing this data flow and are willing to search or browse manually. |
| Enable selected apps | Activity from the participating apps you choose can be shared. | Available for the activity covered by those participating apps. | Can improve continuity for the apps and devices covered by the enabled choices. | Households wanting a compromise between privacy and useful cross-app discovery. |
| Enable all supported apps | Supported participating apps can share viewing and content information. | Provides the broadest activity input described by the integration. | Offers the widest scope for Continue Watching and activity sync where the device and apps support them. | Readers who value convenience and personalized discovery more than limiting this sharing route. |
You can also leave app sharing unchanged and use profiles, search, category browsing, and row cleanup. Those measures improve navigation and data hygiene, but they do not restore personalization that depends on activity you chose not to share.
Requirements for cross-device continuity
Several conditions must be true before Continue Watching or activity synchronization can work as expected:
- The device must offer the Continue Watching feature and the relevant privacy menu.
- The same Fire TV profile must be selected on each device.
- The streaming app must support the feature and be included among the participating apps.
- Sharing for that app must be enabled if you want its activity available to Fire TV.
- The separate activity-sync choice must allow synchronization across compatible Fire TV devices.
Failure at any one of these points can look like a recommendation problem. For example, enabling sharing for one service will not make an unsupported service appear in Continue Watching, and enabling sharing without selecting the same profile on another television will not merge the two profiles’ histories.
Troubleshoot common recommendation problems
The Manage Sharing From Apps option is missing
- Check whether the device has a Continue Watching row. Amazon says the sharing-control page appears only on devices with that feature.
- Confirm that you are looking under Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings, not under an app’s own privacy menu.
- Consider device age. Older Fire TV models that lack profiles may also lack newer personalization controls.
- Remember that labels and feature availability can change by device and software version.
Recommendations remain mixed after selecting a profile
- Switch profiles before launching the app, not after playback has started.
- Remove stale Continue Watching or Recents entries from the active profile.
- Check whether the content came from an app whose sharing remains disabled.
- Use Find and category browsing for immediate discovery while the profile accumulates activity within the sharing choices you made.
- Give each viewer a separate profile instead of sharing one profile for the whole household, where profiles are supported.
Continue Watching does not appear on another Fire TV
- Verify that the same profile is active on both devices.
- Check the activity-sync control under Manage Sharing From Apps.
- Confirm that the app is supported and that its activity is allowed to be shared.
- Do not assume every Fire TV model supports the same row or synchronization behavior; Amazon describes feature availability as device-dependent.
A removed title comes back
Third-party content can return after it is watched again. Remove it from the relevant app when the app provides its own history controls, and verify that you are editing the intended profile. Reappearance is a row-management limitation, not evidence that all privacy choices were ignored.
What turning off Device Usage Data does—and does not do
If the switch you changed was Device Usage Data, Amazon describes it as operating-system usage information processed for customized marketing and product improvement. Turning it off does not mean that all data processing stops. Amazon says the setting does not affect certain device features, interest-based advertising data outside that category, or information related to Amazon services such as Prime Video.
As a result, disabling Device Usage Data alone should not be presented as the cause of every change in Fire TV recommendations. First identify whether app viewing-and-content sharing was also disabled. If it was not, the documented app-sharing route remains a separate control. Likewise, changing Collect App Usage Data or Interest-based Ads should not be assumed to toggle app viewing sharing; each setting has its own stated purpose.

Understand the boundary between Fire TV and streaming apps
Fire TV’s cross-app surfaces and an individual streaming service are not the same recommendation system. The app-sharing control governs information that supported third-party apps provide to Fire TV. A service may still maintain its own watch history, watchlist, and recommendations under its own account and privacy settings. Turning off Fire TV sharing therefore does not promise to stop or restore personalization inside Netflix, Prime Video, or another app.
This distinction also explains why one app may show useful suggestions while the Fire TV home screen looks generic. The app can use activity it retains directly, while Fire TV lacks the shared activity covered by its integration. Use the app’s own controls for app-specific history and use Fire TV’s profile, Find, Continue Watching, and Recents controls for the device-level experience.
Limits you should expect
- There is no published percentage showing how much recommendations improve or decline after changing this setting.
- No setting can force unsupported apps to participate in Continue Watching or the Content Personalization API.
- Profiles, rows, categories, and menu wording vary by Fire TV model, software version, region, and installed services.
- Prime Video and other services can maintain recommendation or history systems governed by their own service policies; disabling Fire TV app sharing is not the same as disabling every service’s internal processing.
- Removing an item from Continue Watching or Recents changes visible lists, not necessarily every recommendation surface.
- There is no universal Fire TV “not interested” command documented for every home-screen recommendation row.
Is buying new hardware a solution?
No. The documented controls describe a privacy and personalization tradeoff, not a hardware-performance problem. A newer Fire TV, replacement remote, repair part, or manual does not restore recommendations that depend on app activity you elected not to share. Check the setting, profile, participating apps, and available discovery tools before considering any purchase. Hardware can change which features a model supports, but it cannot override a privacy choice or make an unsupported app join the integration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep Viewing Data turned off and still get the same Fire TV recommendations?
Not through the documented Content Personalization API. Amazon states that when a customer opts out, the experience is not personalized through that API. You can still use profiles, Find, category browsing, and app-specific recommendations.
Is Device Usage Data the same as Share App Viewing and Content Info?
No. Device Usage Data concerns operating-system usage information used for purposes such as product improvement and customized marketing. Share App Viewing and Content Info concerns viewing and content information from supported third-party apps. Amazon says Device Usage Data does not cover all processing or data related to Amazon services such as Prime Video.
Can I share activity from only one streaming app?
Yes, where the device offers Manage Sharing From Apps and the service is a participating app. That page lets you manage participating apps individually or enable sharing for all supported apps.
Recommended Free Tools
Why is Manage Sharing From Apps missing?
Amazon says the control appears only on Fire TV devices with a Continue Watching row. Check Settings, Preferences, and Privacy Settings, then account for model, software-version, and regional differences.

Will profiles improve recommendations after I opt out?
Profiles keep each viewer’s history, recommendations, watchlists, and progress separate, so they can reduce household mixing. They do not recreate activity that an app is not sharing with Fire TV.
How do I remove a bad Continue Watching entry?
Highlight the title, press the remote’s Menu button, and choose Remove from Continue Watching. Netflix titles must be removed in Netflix, and Amazon says hidden third-party content can return if it is watched again.
Does removing an item train Fire TV not to recommend it?
No such universal effect is documented. Removing an item cleans up Continue Watching or Recents; it is not a system-wide not-interested control and does not guarantee a change to every recommendation row.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy does Continue Watching fail to sync to another Fire TV?
Use the same profile on both devices, confirm the app participates, allow sharing for that app, and check the separate activity-sync control. Feature availability varies by Fire TV model.
Can Prime Video recommendations continue after Device Usage Data is turned off?
Amazon says Device Usage Data does not affect processing related to Amazon services such as Prime Video. Do not treat that switch as an opt-out from every Prime Video or Fire TV recommendation process.
Is there a product I can buy to restore recommendations while keeping sharing off?
No. This is a settings and privacy tradeoff, not a hardware defect. A new device or accessory cannot restore API-based personalization without the activity-sharing choice that supplies its data.
The Bottom Line
Start by identifying the exact toggle. If Share App Viewing and Content Info is off, Fire TV cannot use that shared activity through the documented Content Personalization API, and there is no documented way to restore the same cross-app personalization while keeping that route disabled. Keep the privacy choice and use the correct profile, Find, category browsing, Continue Watching cleanup, and Recents cleanup for a more manageable experience. If you want more convenience, enable sharing for selected participating apps—or all supported apps—while leaving unrelated privacy controls such as Device Usage Data under their own settings.
