Make a gaming desk more comfortable by fitting the chair, feet, keyboard, mouse and monitor to the way you actually sit and play. Start with back support and stable feet, bring the controls within easy reach, then position the screen so you can read it without leaning or tipping your head. These are general computer-workstation recommendations—not gaming-specific standards or guarantees of pain relief.

Set up in this order

Use your normal gaming position, rather than an idealized pose you cannot comfortably maintain. Adjust the chair first, then place the keyboard and mouse, and finally position the monitor. Each change affects the others: moving the chair, for example, changes your reach to the controls and your viewing distance. Recheck the whole arrangement as you go.

  1. Support your seated position. Sit back so the chair supports your back. Adjust its height until your feet rest flat on the floor. If the chair and desk cannot be adjusted to make that possible, use a footrest or another stable support.
  2. Place the controls. Put the keyboard in front of you and the mouse beside it on the same surface, close enough that you do not have to reach. Keep your shoulders relaxed, upper arms near your torso and elbows close to your body. Your wrists and forearms should remain straight and aligned while you use the controls.
  3. Position the monitor. Put the screen directly in front of you. Adjust its distance and height so you can read comfortably without leaning toward it or tipping your head. Use the guidance in the monitor section below as a starting point, then make small adjustments for your screen and vision.
  4. Check space and posture again. Make sure your legs and feet have room under the desk, and that frequently used items are close enough to avoid repeated reaching. Sit in your usual position and check whether the screen, controls and chair still work together.

Make one change at a time and sit normally for a moment after each adjustment. If you move the chair to improve foot support, for example, that may also move you farther from the screen or change how far you reach for the mouse. Recheck those relationships instead of treating each component as a separate problem. A useful test is whether you can use the controls and see the display without needing to hold an awkward position.

Adjust the chair, feet and desk relationship

Start with the person, not the chair’s styling. A gaming label or particular chair shape does not establish that a chair fits you ergonomically. The practical questions are whether you can sit with your back supported, your shoulders relaxed and your feet supported, and whether the desk lets you use the controls without reaching or hunching.

CasaZenith Foot Rest, Six Heights Adjustable Foot Rest Under Desk at Work
  • Desk Foot Rest with 6 Six Height Adjustment: Our foot stool can be adjusted according to your height, office chair height, and desk height, allowing you to have an ergonomic sitting posture. The adjustable foot rest comes in six different heights (3.1", 3.9", 4.9", 5.7", 6.5", 7.3") to help you find your most comfortable sitting position. The height can be adjusted by rotating the screws on both sides of the footrest under the desk, which is easy to operate.
  • Ergonomic Footrest Under Desk: Using an ergonomically designed footrest under your desk is good for your body. The footrest can raise the center of gravity of the lower body, and with the support of the feet, keep the back straight without oppressing the thighs, thereby maintaining a comfy sitting posture. Regular use of an under-desk footstool can also help relieve back stress and pain, reduce fatigue caused by sitting for long periods, and help you feel more energetic every day.
  • Under Desk Foot Massager: Our feet rest for under desk features a small-particle massage surface and four massage rollers. While working, place your feet on the foot rests under your desk and roll the rollers. It can not only massage the soles of the feet but also promote blood circulation and completely relax the legs.
  • Durable and Sturdy Under Desk Foot Stool: The black office foot stools are made of high-quality materials Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS). The legs of the desk footrest have non-slip pads at the bottom to prevent slipping, allowing you to enjoy foot massage more easily. What’s more, the office footstool won’t deform or collapse like a memory foam pad, it's easier to clean than a memory foam pad.
  • Various Applicable Scenarios: The footrest under the desk is detachable, making it easier for you to carry out. You can enjoy the massage foot rest anywhere whether it is an airplane, office, home, travel, or computer gaming.

Find a comfortable seated height

Raise or lower the chair so your feet rest flat on the floor. Keep your back supported and shoulders relaxed, with your elbows close to your body. Your hands should be at or slightly below elbow level when using the keyboard and mouse. If changing chair height makes your feet unsupported, or if the desk height prevents a workable position, a footrest can support your feet. Mayo Clinic notes that a small stool or sturdy books can serve as alternatives; a specialized gaming footrest is not required.

Think of a footrest as a conditional fix, not a default upgrade. First see whether you can adjust the chair and still use the desk and controls comfortably. If you cannot keep your feet supported at that workable chair height, a stable footrest—or a small stool or sturdy books—can fill the gap. Choose an option that supports your feet steadily and fits the space available; the guidance does not require a particular style or brand.

Keep the under-desk area usable

Leave enough clear space beneath the desk to sit comfortably and position your legs and feet. Items stored under the desk can restrict how you sit or where your feet rest. Move them if they prevent a supported seated position. Keep frequently used items within easy reach rather than placing them where you must repeatedly lean or stretch to access them. OSHA’s workstation guidance treats the desk, chair, monitor, input devices and supports as parts of one workstation, rather than isolated purchases.

When deciding whether a desk or chair arrangement works, check the whole seated position rather than focusing on one measurement. Can you sit back with support? Do your feet have a stable place to rest? Can you reach the keyboard and mouse without stretching? Are your shoulders relaxed while you do so? If one answer is no, see whether adjusting the chair, moving the controls or clearing space solves the issue before looking for another product.

Place the keyboard and mouse within easy reach

Put the keyboard in front of you and the mouse next to it on the same surface. Position both so you can operate them with your upper arms near your torso, elbows close to your body and shoulders relaxed. Keep wrists and forearms straight and aligned rather than bent sharply up, down or sideways. Your hands should be at or slightly below elbow level.

If you need to reach forward or out to the side for the mouse, move it closer and check whether the keyboard is taking up more space than necessary. If your shoulders rise while using the controls, check the relationship between chair height and desk surface, then reposition the chair or controls where possible. These checks are more useful than assuming a particular keyboard shape, mouse style or gaming accessory will solve a fit problem.

Set the keyboard in front of your body rather than off to one side, and leave the mouse close enough that using it does not pull one arm away from your torso. The goal is not to keep your arms rigidly still; it is to avoid having the basic control position depend on a sustained reach or visibly tense shoulders. If you use both keyboard and mouse often, arrange them together on the same surface so you are not reaching to a separate level or distant area for one of them.

For a setup with limited desk space, clear or move items you do not need during play before buying a new input device. OSHA’s workstation purchasing guidance supports selecting components based on how they fit the workstation and user. It does not establish that a specific gaming keyboard, mouse, or accessory is necessary. The useful comparison is whether an option lets you keep the controls close, your forearms aligned and your shoulders relaxed in your actual setup.

Position the monitor so you can read without leaning

Place the monitor directly in front of you. Mayo Clinic gives an approximate viewing distance of an arm’s length, or 20 to 40 inches (about 50 to 100 cm). OSHA recommends at least 20 inches and says 20 to 40 inches is generally preferred. Treat this as a starting range, not a rigid gaming-specific threshold: readable text, screen size, comfort and vision correction can affect the distance that works for you.

Start with the display centered in front of your usual seated position, then assess whether you can read it without leaning. The two sources give overlapping distance guidance, but neither makes one exact distance right for every player or display. Use the range to begin, not as a reason to force a distance that makes the screen hard to see. If you find yourself moving your head or torso to read, reconsider the distance, height or text readability.

Set height and viewing angle

Mayo Clinic recommends placing the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. OSHA says the center of the monitor should normally be 15 to 20 degrees below horizontal eye level. These are related ways to guide screen placement, not a requirement to force every display into one exact position. Adjust the monitor so you can view it comfortably without leaning forward or tipping your head. OSHA’s monitor guidance also addresses glare; if reflections interfere with viewing, adjust the monitor or its surroundings to reduce them.

The monitor may need a different position depending on how you sit and what makes the image readable. Use the eye-level and viewing-angle recommendations as guides, then check the result in your normal posture. OSHA’s stated angle is a general workstation recommendation, not a gaming-specific target. Do not sacrifice comfortable reading merely to match a number exactly.

If the screen is too low or high to view comfortably, adjust its position or use a monitor stand or riser if that solves the problem and fits your desk. An adjustable support may help when you need to change the height, but buying one is not a universal requirement. If increasing viewing distance makes text hard to read, consider whether the display’s text size or your vision correction needs attention rather than simply leaning toward the screen.

When comparing monitor supports, focus on whether the support actually brings the display to a more comfortable height, whether it holds the screen steadily, whether it fits the available desk space, and whether you need adjustability. A simple riser may be enough when the screen only needs to be raised; an adjustable support may be useful if you need to change its position. No particular specification or product ranking follows from the general guidance, so choose based on the fit problem rather than gaming branding.

Use posture as a fit check

If you notice yourself leaning in to see the display, tipping your head, or turning away from the screen, treat that as a cue to revisit its position, viewing distance or readability. Recheck the chair and controls after moving the display: a monitor adjustment that prompts you to scoot the chair can also change your reach to the keyboard and mouse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also check for reflections that make it difficult to see the screen comfortably. OSHA’s monitor guidance includes glare considerations; adjusting the monitor or its surroundings may help reduce interfering reflections. If a display change fixes glare but makes you lean or turn your head, reassess the position rather than accepting a new awkward posture.

Adapt a laptop setup

A laptop combines the screen and keyboard in one unit, which can make it difficult to place the screen at a comfortable height while keeping the controls close. Mayo Clinic suggests considering a laptop stand together with an external keyboard and mouse. The stand raises the built-in screen; the separate controls let you keep the keyboard and mouse in a more usable position. These are options for that fit problem, not purchases every player needs.

Think of the stand and external controls as a way to separate two positions that a laptop otherwise ties together. If you raise the laptop screen while continuing to use its built-in keyboard, the controls may no longer be close and comfortable. An external keyboard and mouse let you position the screen and input devices separately. If your laptop arrangement already lets you see the screen and use the controls without leaning or reaching, the extra equipment is not automatically needed.

Build pauses into long sessions

OSHA’s keyboard guidance recommends short micro-pauses during computer use and says, “Every hour, take a five-minute break from computer tasks.” Mayo Clinic’s desk-pain guidance suggests giving your eyes a break every 20 minutes by focusing for 20 seconds on something at least 20 feet away. These are recommendations from the respective sources, not evidence that one exact schedule is uniquely best for gaming.

Choose a practical way to interrupt continuous computer tasks: stand, change position or look away from the screen. A break schedule does not replace adjusting a workstation that makes you lean, reach or sit without support.

The two suggestions address different kinds of pause: OSHA describes a five-minute break from computer tasks each hour, while Mayo Clinic suggests a brief distance-viewing break for the eyes every 20 minutes. They need not be treated as competing rules or as a guarantee that discomfort will be prevented. Use them as reminders to interrupt continuous computer use and reassess how you feel, rather than trying to compensate for a poor fit by taking breaks alone.

Troubleshoot by the problem you notice

  • Your feet do not rest flat: Adjust the chair height. If the desk or chair makes a supported-feet position impossible, use a footrest or a stable alternative such as a small stool.
  • You reach for the mouse or keyboard: Move the controls closer and keep them on the same surface. Check that the keyboard is in front of you and your upper arms can stay near your torso.
  • You lean toward the screen or tip your head: Recheck monitor distance and height, and whether the text is readable from a comfortable position. Adjust the display or consider a monitor riser if height is the issue.
  • Your legs or feet feel constrained by the desk area: Clear enough under-desk space to sit with your feet supported and legs in a comfortable position.
  • You use a laptop and cannot get both screen and controls into a comfortable arrangement: Consider a laptop stand plus an external keyboard and mouse so the screen and input devices can be positioned separately.
  • Reflections make the display difficult to see: Adjust the monitor or its surroundings to reduce glare, then check that the new position still lets you sit comfortably and face the screen.
  • Your shoulders tense while using the controls: Check that your chair height and desk surface let your hands rest at or slightly below elbow level, then bring the keyboard and mouse within easy reach.

These adjustments are intended to support a more neutral and comfortable workstation; they do not guarantee that pain or other symptoms will improve. Persistent pain, numbness or other symptoms call for an individualized assessment beyond a setup guide.

Sources and scope

This guide draws on general computer-workstation recommendations from Mayo Clinic’s “Office ergonomics: Your how-to guide” (May 25, 2023) and “Mayo Clinic Q and A: Avoiding pain while working at a desk,” and OSHA’s “eTools: Computer Workstations,” including its pages on monitors, keyboards, good working positions, workstation components and purchasing. These sources address computer workstations generally; they do not establish a gaming-specific ergonomics standard, test particular gaming chair types, or show that a specific setup prevents injury.

How far away should a gaming monitor be?

Mayo Clinic gives an approximate arm’s-length distance of 20 to 40 inches (about 50 to 100 cm). OSHA recommends at least 20 inches and says 20 to 40 inches is generally preferred. Treat that as general workstation guidance, not a rigid gaming rule; screen size, readable text, comfort and vision correction can affect what works.

Do I need a gaming footrest or monitor riser?

No. Use a footrest if chair and desk adjustments do not let your feet stay supported; Mayo Clinic says a small stool or sturdy books can also work. A monitor stand or riser is an option if you need to adjust screen height. In either case, choose support only when it solves your fit problem and suits the space.

How should I set up a laptop for gaming at a desk?

A laptop’s built-in screen and keyboard can make it hard to position both comfortably at once. Mayo Clinic suggests considering a laptop stand with an external keyboard and mouse, so the screen and controls can be placed separately. They are options, not necessary purchases for every laptop setup.

How often should I take breaks from a gaming desk?

OSHA’s keyboard guidance recommends short micro-pauses and says to take a five-minute break from computer tasks every hour. Mayo Clinic suggests a 20-second eye break every 20 minutes by looking at something at least 20 feet away. These are general recommendations, not a uniquely proven gaming schedule; breaks do not replace correcting a workstation that makes you lean or reach.

The Bottom Line

For a more comfortable gaming desk, start with supported feet and back, keep the keyboard and mouse close, and place the monitor so you can read without leaning. Adjust the workstation as a whole, use accessories only when they solve a real fit problem, and take pauses during long computer sessions. These general recommendations are not gaming-specific standards or a guarantee of pain relief.
