First identify which over-ear model you own: the original QuietComfort Ultra (sold from 2023) and QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen) use different charging rules. On the original, turning Immersive Audio off is the clearest documented battery-saving step, and charging must be done off your head from a USB-A power source; the 2nd Gen can charge while worn from USB-C.
Confirm whether you have the original or 2nd Gen headphones
Bose sells two over-ear products with very similar names. The original QuietComfort Ultra is identified in Bose material as a 2023 model. QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen) appears in Bose support and product material as a 2025 model. Check the name shown in the Bose app, on the product packaging, or on the headphones before following any charging procedure.
Do not apply the original model’s USB-A and off-head instructions to the 2nd Gen, and do not assume the 2nd Gen’s USB-C audio or while-worn charging behavior applies to the original.

How to improve battery life on the original QuietComfort Ultra
Turn Immersive Audio off when runtime matters
This is the clearest battery-saving control Bose documents for the original model. Bose rates the headphones at up to 24 hours with Immersive Audio off and up to 18 hours with it on—a six-hour difference in the stated maximum.
Use the Bose app or the headphones’ Immersive Audio control to select the non-immersive mode before a long trip, workday, or flight. Re-enable Immersive Audio when its spatial presentation is more important than maximum runtime. The 24-hour and 18-hour numbers remain estimates under Bose’s stated conditions.
Understand what Bose’s test conditions mean
Bose’s product-page test was conducted in 2023 with production-representative headphones, A2DP Bluetooth streaming, Quiet Mode, playback at 75 dB, and the equalizer set to zero. Bose reports up to 24 hours with Immersive Audio off and up to 18 hours with it on under that setup.

Your result can be shorter because battery life varies with settings and use. Treat the published figures as an upper bound for that test configuration, not a promise that every listening session will reach the same duration. No independent real-world battery measurement is established here.
Do not rely on undocumented “calibration” fixes
Bose’s original-model charging guidance does not establish a battery-calibration cycle, a particular reset sequence, or a special cable-swapping routine as a fix for poor capacity. If the headphones have always fallen well short of the published range, or runtime has declined sharply after normal use, record the behavior and contact Bose support rather than repeatedly deep-discharging the battery.
How to charge the original QuietComfort Ultra correctly
Follow the model-specific Bose Support procedure for the original over-ear headphones:
- Remove the headphones from your head. Bose states that the original model will not charge while it is on your head and connected to external power.
- Find the USB-C port on the left earcup. Insert the small end of the charging cable fully into that port.
- Use a USB-A power source. Connect the cable’s other end to a computer or wall charger with a USB-A output, as Bose’s original-model instructions specify.
- Check the status light. The model-specific support article describes a solid amber light while charging and solid white when fully charged.
- Allow the full charging period. Bose Support says to allow up to three hours for a full charge.
Bluetooth is disabled while the original headphones are charging. The owner’s guide also says that when the battery is depleted, connecting USB power first powers the headphones off and starts charging; after that charging has begun, you can power them on again. The original owner’s guide does not support USB audio, so connecting the cable is not a way to listen over USB.

What the charging lights mean—and why Bose’s pages disagree
Two official Bose pages give different details for the original model. The model-specific support article is the better reference for the step-by-step procedure, but the discrepancy should be understood rather than hidden.

Bose’s product page also says a 15-minute charge provides up to three hours, while the support article gives up to 2.5 hours with Immersive Audio off or up to two hours with it on. These are not interchangeable specifications. Use the support article tied directly to the original model when troubleshooting, and do not treat a green-versus-white difference by itself as proof that the headphones are defective.
If your light behavior does not match either description, first verify the generation and then ask Bose support to interpret the indicator for your exact product and software state.
Why are my Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones not charging?
Start with the checks Bose directly supports for the original model. They also prevent the most common generation and connection mistakes.
- Verify the product. Make sure you have the original over-ear QuietComfort Ultra, not the 2nd Gen or QuietComfort Ultra earbuds. The connector and charging rules differ.
- Take the headphones off. The original model is not designed to charge while being worn.
- Check the left earcup. The charging port is USB-C on the left side. Confirm that the small connector is seated completely and straight.
- Confirm the power-source type. For the original model, connect the other end to a USB-A computer port or USB-A wall charger. A USB-C-to-USB-C arrangement belongs to the 2nd Gen guidance, not the original model’s support procedure.
- Wait through the specified charge window. Allow up to three hours before deciding that a normal charge has failed.
- Compare the indicator with the correct source. Use the original-model support description—amber while charging and white when full—while remembering that Bose’s product page uses different full-charge details.
If these checks do not produce a charging light or usable battery, Bose’s published instructions do not provide a complete diagnostic flow for a failed headset. Do not present a particular reset, battery calibration, charge-cycle routine, or cable purchase as an official repair unless Bose confirms it for your unit. Contact Bose support with the generation, the observed light behavior, the power-source type, and how long the headphones were connected.
Can you use QuietComfort Ultra headphones while they charge?
Original QuietComfort Ultra
Not in the normal way. Bose says the original will not charge while it is on your head, and Bluetooth is disabled during charging. Its owner’s guide says that a depleted headset can be connected to USB power, allowed to begin charging, and then powered on again, but the manual does not support USB audio. That means the original model is not a USB-connected listening solution while it charges.
QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen)
Bose says the 2nd Gen can be connected to a USB-C powered source and worn normally while charging. Bose cautions that charging can take longer while the headphones are in use. The 2nd Gen also supports USB-C audio, which is a separate feature from charging and does not transfer to the original model.

How long should a full charge take?
For the original model, the model-specific Bose Support article says to allow up to three hours. Bose’s product page says up to two hours, creating an official difference of one hour. Use the three-hour support figure when deciding whether the original charging procedure has had enough time, and keep the product-page figure qualified as a conflicting official claim rather than silently choosing one as universally correct.
For a short top-up on the original, Bose Support rates 15 minutes at up to 2.5 hours with Immersive Audio off or up to two hours with it on. The product page instead advertises up to three hours from 15 minutes without the same setting breakdown. These are “up to” values and can vary with use and settings.
When poor battery life points to a hardware problem
A shorter session does not automatically mean the battery has failed. Bose’s figures are maximum claims measured under stated playback, mode, volume, and equalizer conditions, and the manufacturer says settings and use affect endurance.
Escalate to Bose support when the original headphones consistently fail to charge after the correct off-head, left-earcup USB-C, USB-A-source procedure; never show the expected charging indication; or show a major, persistent loss of capacity that cannot be explained by Immersive Audio use. Give support the model generation and the exact symptoms. The available Bose material does not establish a user battery-replacement procedure, and the battery should not be treated as user-serviceable based on these instructions.
Choosing a replacement cable or power source
If the included cable is missing or visibly damaged, a compatible USB cable can help you test the charging setup, but buying one does not repair a depleted internal battery. For the original model, Bose’s procedure calls for a cable with USB-C at the headphone end and a USB-A connection to the computer or wall charger. A USB-A wall charger is a reasonable optional purchase if you do not have an appropriate source. Confirm the generation and connector arrangement before ordering: the 2nd Gen specifications list USB-C to USB-C, while the original support instructions specify a USB-A source.

Use a known-good, undamaged cable and inspect the port for obvious obstruction without forcing a connector. Bose does not establish a particular third-party cable certification, wattage requirement, or adapter brand as a cure. If the official connection and a suitable source still produce no charging indication, move to support rather than buying multiple accessories.
Planning a trip or long listening day
Start with the model’s own rating and your listening mode. An original model at Bose’s maximum of 24 hours with Immersive Audio off has a larger stated margin than the 18-hour maximum with it on, so disabling Immersive Audio before a flight is the most defensible documented choice when runtime is the priority. A 15-minute top-up is quoted by Bose Support as up to 2.5 hours with Immersive Audio off or up to two hours with it on.

Those figures are not a reservation or guarantee. Volume, Bluetooth streaming conditions, mode selection and other use factors can reduce the result. Charge before leaving, carry the correct USB-A-source arrangement for the original, and remember that the original cannot charge on your head and has no USB audio fallback. For a 2nd Gen, a USB-C source can be used while worn, but Bose says charging may take longer during use.
Information to collect before contacting Bose
Support can work more efficiently if you provide the exact generation, the product name shown in the Bose app, whether the headphones were on or off your head, the port and cable arrangement, the type of power source, the light color and whether it was solid, and the elapsed charging time. Also note whether the battery was completely depleted and whether the problem is failure to start charging, an unexpectedly short runtime, or an indicator that differs from Bose’s descriptions.

Can I use Bose QuietComfort Ultra headphones while they charge?
