Start with the changes that are easy to undo: confirm that the phone is sending audio to the intended headphones, reseat the headphones for a consistent seal, open the headphone maker’s app for its model-specific controls, and adjust a supported equalizer (EQ) in small steps. If the problem is crackling, dropouts or intermittent distortion, troubleshoot the Bluetooth connection before changing tone settings: play a downloaded track with the phone nearby, remove obstructions and test away from busy wireless areas. Codec menus can help only when the phone and headphones support the same codec, and a sound-quality priority can make an otherwise good connection less stable.
Identify what “bad sound” means first
Sound that is consistently too bass-heavy, thin or sharp is a tonal-balance problem. Sound that cuts out, crackles or becomes distorted is usually a connection or interference problem. A single quiet earbud can result from balance settings, poor seating or a blocked nozzle. Audio that changes dramatically as soon as a call or game enables the microphone involves Bluetooth’s hands-free audio path, which can behave differently from music playback.
- Too much or too little bass, recessed voices, or harsh treble: use the headphone’s EQ or a phone accessibility control that explicitly supports your model.
- One side quieter: check left/right balance, clean the headphone opening and reseat both sides before touching codecs.
- Crackles, dropouts or stutters: run the nearby downloaded-track test in the connection section below.
- Quality drops during calls or gaming: determine whether your phone and headset support Bluetooth LE Audio; do not assume a music codec setting controls microphone mode.
Make the low-risk checks before changing advanced settings
Confirm the actual audio route
Open the phone’s media output picker while audio is playing and select the intended Bluetooth headphones. If the phone is still routing to its speaker, a car system or another previously paired device, EQ changes will not affect what you hear. Pause and resume playback after selecting the headphones so the connection is rebuilt cleanly.

For in-ear models, try the supplied tip sizes and make sure each housing is fully seated. For on-ear or over-ear models, adjust the headband and ear-cup position so both sides sit evenly. A changing seal can make bass appear to disappear, while a blocked grille can make one channel quieter. Wipe the surfaces according to the manufacturer’s care instructions; do not push liquid into a grille or charging contact.

Use the manufacturer’s control app
Many headphones expose EQ bands, preset profiles, balance, firmware information and a connection-priority option only in their own app. Select the exact model shown by the app, save one change at a time and compare at the same volume. A louder setting often sounds “better” in a quick comparison even when it is only louder, so match volume before judging an EQ change.
Improve tonal balance with EQ, not codecs
An EQ changes the relative level of frequency ranges. It does not repair a weak Bluetooth link, increase the radio range or turn an unsupported codec into a supported one. Make modest adjustments, listen to familiar recordings and keep a neutral or flat preset available as a reference. If a change makes vocals recessed, cymbals sharp or bass muddy, reduce the adjustment rather than adding several opposing boosts.
iPhone: Headphone Accommodations
On iOS and iPadOS 14 or later, Apple documents Headphone Accommodations at Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations. Availability is model-dependent: Apple lists supported AirPods, Beats and EarPods families rather than promising the control for every third-party Bluetooth headset. For supported AirPods models, the feature includes a three-band Custom Audio Setup/EQ and a left-right balance control. If your headset is not on Apple’s supported list, use its own app or an audio app that explicitly supports your hardware instead of expecting this menu to appear.

Android phones differ in manufacturer software and menu names. System sound settings may offer an equalizer, hearing-accessibility controls or a balance slider, while some headphones keep all tone controls in their companion app. Change one control, save it, and verify that it remains active after reconnecting. Generic “best EQ” recipes cannot account for your headphone’s tuning, fit or hearing, so treat them as starting points rather than objective corrections.

Diagnose dropouts, crackles and distortion in a controlled test
Apple’s connection guidance is useful regardless of whether you use an iPhone or Android phone: compare streamed audio with a track downloaded to the phone, keep the phone within a couple of metres, remove obstructions and move away from crowded or interference-prone areas.
- Download one test track. Use a locally stored song or podcast so a weak internet connection cannot be mistaken for Bluetooth interference.
- Keep the phone close and unobstructed. Put it in the same hand or on a nearby surface, rather than in a bag or behind your body.
- Compare downloaded and streamed playback. If the download is clean but streaming stutters, investigate the network. If both stutter, continue with Bluetooth troubleshooting.
- Change location. Move away from dense wireless activity, large crowds and objects that block the direct path. Test again in a quieter area.
- Reset the pairing if interruptions continue. Forget or unpair the headphones, restart the phone, power-cycle the headphones and pair them again. Recheck that the phone selected them as the active output.
Do not use EQ or a higher-bitrate preference as a remedy for repeated radio dropouts. Those settings cannot remove an obstruction or resolve interference.
Understand codec selection before touching Developer options
A Bluetooth codec is the method used to encode and decode audio for the wireless link. The phone and headphones must both implement the same codec. Android’s Bluetooth services documentation explains: “This negotiation selects the best codec supported by both the sender and the sink to provide high-quality audio.” That is a statement about choosing among mutually supported codecs, not a promise that every phone offers every codec or that one named codec will sound better to every listener.
What the Android codec menu can and cannot do
On Android, enable Developer options by tapping Build number seven times on Android 4.2 and later. The location and label can differ by manufacturer. In Developer options, some phones expose Bluetooth Audio Codec, sample-rate and bit-depth controls, and an LDAC quality preference. These are advanced, manufacturer-specific controls. A menu selection cannot make the headphones decode a codec they do not support, and the phone may revert to another codec after reconnecting.

- MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.
After selecting a codec, reconnect the headphones and check what the headphone app or phone status actually reports. If no status is shown, judge the result by stability and listening—not by the label alone. Avoid forcing sample rates or bit depths from generic online recipes; unsupported combinations may be ignored or may create compatibility problems without an audible benefit.
Why a quality preference can reduce reliability
Some headphone apps offer a sound-quality-priority mode and a stable-connection-priority mode. Sony warns of its quality-priority option: “Depending on the environment, the connection may become unstable.” If you hear interruptions after choosing quality priority, switch back to stable-connection priority, move the phone closer and retest. The exact control and available codecs depend on the headphone model.
Check LE Audio and microphone use separately
Music playback and two-way microphone use are not always equivalent. A classic Bluetooth hands-free profile can reduce media quality when the microphone is active during a call, voice chat or game. Android documents Bluetooth LE Audio and the LC3 codec as features that can maintain higher output quality while a compatible headset microphone is in use. This requires compatible hardware and software at both ends; it is not a universal Android sound-quality switch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To check compatibility, look for the phone’s Bluetooth or connected-device information and the headset’s specifications or companion app. Android provides a hardware support check for LE Audio. If either device lacks support, changing a classic codec menu will not add LE Audio behavior. For a call or game, compare the same app with the microphone muted and active; that isolates a microphone-mode change from ordinary music playback.

Use a symptom-based decision table
| Symptom | First check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Consistently bass-heavy, thin or sharp | Fit and the headphone’s EQ | Make small EQ changes and compare at matched volume |
| One side is quieter | Left/right balance and seating | Clean the opening, reseat the headphones and verify balance controls |
| Intermittent cuts, crackles or distortion | Downloaded track with phone nearby | Remove obstructions, change location, then forget, restart and re-pair |
| Quality falls when microphone is active | Call or game microphone mode | Check whether both devices support LE Audio and LC3 |
| Codec option appears but makes no difference | Mutual codec support and reconnection status | Use the codec negotiated by both devices; do not force unsupported settings |
Follow the iPhone troubleshooting path
For tonal problems
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations.
- Confirm that the connected model is one Apple supports for the feature.
- Try the audio tuning or three-band Custom EQ where available, then adjust the balance slider if one side is quieter.
- Compare at the same volume with a familiar track and turn the accommodation off once to confirm that it is responsible for the change.
For connection problems
Test a downloaded track with the phone within a couple of metres and unobstructed. Keep the phone close, avoid interference-prone locations and compare again. If the interruptions persist, forget or unpair the headphones, restart both devices and pair them again. Apple’s support page is localized to the UK, and its compatibility list and menu behavior can change with later iOS releases, so verify the model and operating-system version on your phone.
Follow the Android troubleshooting path
For EQ and balance
Start in the phone’s sound or accessibility settings, then open the headphone maker’s app. Look for equalizer, balance, hearing or preset controls. Make one adjustment at a time and reconnect once to make sure it persists. If the phone has no system EQ and the headphone app has none, an audio player’s EQ may affect only that player rather than calls, games or every app.
For codec settings
- Open Settings and locate About phone; tap Build number seven times to enable Developer options on Android 4.2 and later.
- Return to Settings and open the manufacturer’s Developer options location. The path and labels vary by device.
- Inspect Bluetooth Audio Codec and any LDAC quality preference. Choose only a codec listed as supported by both the phone and the headphones.
- Disconnect and reconnect the headphones, then verify the active connection if the phone or headphone app reports it.
- If the connection becomes unstable, return to the manufacturer’s stable-connection mode or the default codec selection.
Android’s platform documentation includes material from older platform versions, so a current phone may present different labels or omit a control entirely. Absence of a menu is not evidence that the headphones are defective.
Compare options by compatibility, not marketing labels
When deciding whether to change a setting or replace headphones, evaluate the complete phone-headphone pair and your use case.

| Decision axis | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Phone and headphone compatibility | Which codecs, LE Audio features and OS versions do both devices support? | A feature available at only one end cannot be negotiated. |
| Sound preference | Do you need a tonal adjustment, a balance correction or a neutral reference? | EQ changes tonal balance; there is no universally best curve. |
| Connection reliability | Does quality priority remain stable in your normal environment? | A theoretical codec advantage is unhelpful if audio drops out. |
| Use case | Are you listening to music, making calls or gaming with the microphone? | Microphone-active modes can behave differently from media playback. |
| Fit and isolation | Do both sides sit securely and comfortably for the entire session? | A changing seal alters bass and can mimic an electronic problem. |
When buying different headphones is justified
Purchase a different pair only after routing, fit, EQ and connection tests. The evidence here does not establish a universally best model, a guaranteed audible gain from a particular codec, current pricing or a performance ranking. A replacement is most defensible when the current headphones lack a needed control, cannot maintain a stable connection in your environment, do not fit securely, or are incompatible with a feature you specifically need, such as LE Audio microphone playback.
Before buying, record the exact phone model, operating-system version and headphone model. Check that the prospective pair supports the codecs and microphone features your phone can actually use, and confirm that its app offers the controls you want. Treat a codec or “high-resolution” label as a compatibility specification, not as a promise of audible improvement for every listener.
A complete troubleshooting checklist
- Selected the intended headphones in the phone’s media-output control.
- Checked seating, tip or ear-cup position, cleanliness and left/right balance.
- Opened the headphone maker’s app and saved a small EQ adjustment, if needed.
- Compared a downloaded track with the phone within a couple of metres.
- Removed obstructions and repeated the test away from crowded wireless areas.
- Forgot or unpaired, restarted and re-paired when interruptions persisted.
- Confirmed that any chosen codec is supported by both phone and headphones.
- Reconnected after changing Developer options and checked the active setting.
- Returned to stable-connection priority if quality priority caused instability.
- Checked LE Audio and LC3 support separately when microphone use reduced quality.
What to expect from the result
The most reliable improvement is the one that matches the symptom: EQ and balance for tonal or channel differences, fit for acoustic consistency, and connection troubleshooting for dropouts. Codec and LE Audio controls are compatibility-dependent and can involve a stability trade-off. If the downloaded-track test remains clean only when the phone is very close, or if one side stays quiet after balance, fit and cleaning checks, the limitation may be the headphone hardware or design rather than a setting that the phone can correct.
