The best first step is to enable Xbox Default Game Profiles for each supported game in the Armoury Crate Command Center. These profiles automatically balance the handheld’s per-game power limit and frame-rate target while you play on battery, so the system does not spend energy rendering frames you do not need.
The 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA) has an 80Wh battery and a 7-inch 1920×1080 display capable of 120Hz. Those are hardware specifications, not a guaranteed number of gaming hours. Actual runtime depends on the game, frame-rate target, resolution, graphics load, display behavior and power mode. The goal is to remove wasted power while keeping the frame pacing and image quality you consider acceptable.
Identify the exact handheld and set realistic expectations
This guide applies to the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X, model RC73XA. It is not the same device as the standard ROG Xbox Ally, and settings or firmware behavior can differ between the two.

Battery capacity is measured in watt-hours, not hours of play. A demanding 3D title can draw substantially more power than a lightweight 2D game, even with the same battery percentage. Treat every runtime figure as conditional on the title and settings used to produce it.

Start with Xbox Default Game Profiles
For a supported title, Default Game Profiles are the least disruptive way to seek longer battery life. Xbox describes them as per-game settings that adjust Thermal Design Power (TDP) and frame-rate limits on battery. Microsoft’s technical explanation says: “Default Game Profiles make games run better when on battery by setting Thermal Design Power (TDP) limits and framerate (FPS) limits to balance performance and battery life that go beyond what titles can achieve via in-game settings alone.”
Check whether your game has a profile
- Launch the game on the ROG Xbox Ally X.
- Open the Armoury Crate Command Center using the handheld’s Command Center control.
- Locate the Game Bar widget and look for the Default Game Profiles option.
- If the title is supported, turn the profile on for that game and return to play.
The control is per game, so enabling it for one title does not mean that every installed game receives the same limits. The available list can change as Xbox adds profiles or changes support. Xbox’s April 30, 2026 update listed support on both ROG Xbox Ally models for titles including Ninja Gaiden 4, Grounded 2, High on Life 2, The Outer Worlds 2, Ark: Survival Ascended, Monster Hunter Rise and Gears of War: Reloaded. Check the on-device list instead of treating that group as exhaustive or permanent.
What the profile is trying to do
The profile is not simply a low-power switch. Xbox says it can raise power when a game misses its target frame rate and limit frame rate when performance is already above the target. In practice, that means a demanding scene may receive enough power to maintain the intended target, while an easy scene is prevented from rendering unnecessary extra frames.

- When performance is below target: the profile can allow more power so the game has a better chance of meeting its target.
- When performance is above target: the profile can limit frames and avoid spending battery on output you cannot use.
- When the result feels wrong: disable the profile for that title and tune the game manually, because automatic targets are starting points rather than guarantees.
Judge the result during the parts of the game that normally stress the handheld: a busy combat encounter, a large outdoor area, a race start or a shader-heavy transition. A profile that feels smooth in a menu can still miss its target in a demanding scene.

Use a repeatable test before changing several settings
Changing resolution, graphics quality and frame-rate limits at the same time makes it impossible to know which adjustment helped. Use one repeatable section of the game and make one change at a time.
- Play from battery at the same starting charge when practical, with the same game area or repeatable activity.
- Record the frame-rate behavior you care about: sustained smoothness, occasional dips, or input response. Do not judge only by the highest number shown by an overlay.
- Change one setting, play the same section again, and check whether the visual or control compromise is noticeable.
- Keep the least restrictive change that removes the unwanted power use. Revert any setting that makes aiming, camera movement or scrolling feel inconsistent.
- After a longer session, compare the battery percentage lost over a similar period. A short menu test is not representative of active gameplay.
This process is more reliable than copying a universal “best” preset. Games have different engines, frame-time spikes and graphics bottlenecks, so the setting that helps one title may do little for another.
When no Default Game Profile is available
Manual tuning should follow the same objective as the automatic profiles: keep a frame-rate target that feels responsive without rendering excess pixels or frames. Make changes in this order so you preserve quality as long as possible.
1. Choose a realistic frame-rate target
Start by deciding what smoothness the game actually needs. A title designed around slower exploration may feel consistent at a lower target than a fast action game. The 120Hz panel can display up to 120 refreshes per second, but that does not make 120 FPS necessary for every game.

Lowering a frame-rate cap can reduce work when the hardware was rendering well above the level you could perceive or use. The trade-off is obvious: animation and camera movement may feel less fluid if the new target is too low or poorly maintained. Pick the highest target that the game can hold consistently in its demanding scenes, not the highest number reached briefly in a quiet area.
2. Reduce render resolution only as far as needed
The native panel resolution is 1920×1080. If the game offers a lower render resolution or a resolution scale, reduce it incrementally and inspect text, distant objects and fine edges. Fewer rendered pixels can lower GPU work, but the image becomes softer as the scale falls. A modest reduction that is difficult to notice is preferable to a large drop that makes the entire game look blurry.
Use the game’s own scaling option when it provides one, because it may preserve the interface at native size while lowering only the 3D render. If the title has no scale control, compare its available resolutions at the same frame-rate target and retain the clearest setting that still meets your performance requirement.

Graphics menus differ, so there is no universal order that produces the same result in every engine. Change one option at a time and watch for the visual consequence. Options that affect shadows, reflections, volumetric effects or distant detail can sometimes be reduced with less impact on readability than texture quality, but the actual cost varies by title and scene.

- Keep texture detail higher when the game remains within memory limits and the image benefits noticeably from it.
- Test shadow, reflection, volumetric and distant-detail settings individually; their cost depends on the engine and scene.
- Do not lower every option automatically. If a setting produces a large visual loss but little change in sustained frame rate, restore it.
4. Recheck the frame-rate cap after visual changes
Reducing resolution or graphics quality can create enough headroom for the game to render more frames. If you leave an uncapped game running faster than necessary, the power saved by the visual change may be spent on extra frames. Apply the cap again and verify that frame pacing remains steady.

The table separates settings with documented profile behavior from general tuning choices. Xbox and Microsoft document per-game TDP and FPS balancing; they do not establish one manual TDP number, refresh setting or brightness level that improves runtime by a fixed amount for every title.

This is an example for one game and one profile comparison, not a promise for every title or every owner. Your result can differ with firmware, game updates, scene complexity, display settings and battery condition.

ASUS’s “up to 2X battery life” comparison
ASUS lists “up to 2X battery life” when comparing the ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA, Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 80Wh) with the ROG Ally X (RC72LA, Ryzen Z1 Extreme, also 80Wh). ASUS’s stated test used Hollow Knight: Silksong at 720p, a 60-FPS limit, low in-game graphics and Silent mode. That is a vendor comparison under those exact conditions, not an independent result and not a cross-game guarantee.
Neither figure should be converted into a general claim such as “the Ally X lasts a certain number of hours.” Keep the game, resolution, frame-rate cap, graphics preset, power mode and comparison device beside the number whenever you use it.
Diagnose common results that feel worse than expected
The game still drains the battery quickly
- Confirm that the intended Default Game Profile is enabled for the current title, not merely for another game.
- Check whether the game is rendering above the frame-rate target you intended to use.
- Lower one graphics-heavy setting or the render resolution slightly, then repeat the same demanding scene.
- Remember that an 80Wh battery does not guarantee a fixed runtime; a demanding game can consume substantially more power than a lightweight title.
The game feels less responsive after tuning
- Raise the frame-rate cap one step before reducing image quality further.
- Restore the last graphics option that made the picture look noticeably worse.
- Compare frame pacing in motion rather than relying on a brief peak FPS reading.
- Disable the automatic profile for that title if its target does not suit your play style, then use a manual cap.
The image is too soft after lowering resolution
- Return to the previous resolution and test a smaller reduction or a resolution-scale option.
- Keep interface elements at native size when the game offers separate 3D scaling.
- Recover sharpness before lowering additional graphics settings; a softer image can be more distracting than reduced shadows or reflections.
A listed game does not show a profile
Support is title-specific and can change over time. Verify the current list in Armoury Crate and Xbox updates. If the game is not listed, use the manual procedure: set a consistent frame-rate target, reduce resolution or selected effects incrementally, and test the same demanding section after each change.

- Supported profile: enable the Default Game Profile and play a demanding section. Keep it if the target feels stable and the image remains acceptable.
- Supported profile but poor feel: turn it off for that title. Choose your own frame-rate target, then adjust resolution or graphics options only if needed.
- No profile: start with the highest frame-rate target the game can sustain, cap excess frames, and make the smallest resolution or graphics reduction that improves consistency.
- Still not satisfactory: decide which matters more for that title—higher visual quality, higher frame rate or longer unplugged play—and change the other variable rather than lowering everything at once.
This approach preserves the least restrictive setting that meets your own playability target. There is no single battery preset that can account for every game’s engine, workload and visual priorities.
