Start by lowering the display refresh rate while the laptop is on battery. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and choose a lower rate that remains comfortable. If your laptop supports Dynamic refresh rate, enable it instead so Windows can reduce refresh during static work and raise it when movement requires smoother animation.

Then reduce brightness, select Best power efficiency (or Energy saver when you need stronger conservation), shorten screen-off and sleep timers, and investigate apps and peripherals that continue using power. Microsoft confirms that higher refresh rates use more power, but official guidance does not establish a universal percentage or number of minutes gained by lowering yours. Results depend on the panel, processor, workload, battery condition and manufacturer software.

Does lowering the refresh rate save battery?

Yes. A display running at a higher refresh rate must update the image more often, increasing display power use. Microsoft describes the trade-off plainly: “A higher refresh rate will provide smoother motion on your display, but it also uses more power.” Lowering the setting is therefore the most directly relevant first change for a high-refresh-rate laptop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The saving is not a fixed number. A 60 Hz setting will not add a guaranteed number of hours compared with 120 Hz or 144 Hz because the display is only one part of total consumption. A demanding game, video call, bright screen, weak battery or busy background process can dominate the result. Treat the change as a way to reduce one recurring load, not as a promised runtime percentage.

What you need before changing settings

This guide is primarily for a laptop running Windows 11. You need an account with permission to change Windows settings, and an available battery profile to test. Keep the charger nearby while making changes, then unplug it for a repeatable battery test. Paths and labels can vary slightly by Windows build, graphics driver and laptop maker.

Record your current refresh rate, brightness, power mode and the apps you normally use. A short note or screenshot makes it easier to reverse a setting if the screen becomes uncomfortable or an application performs poorly. Do not assume that a gaming laptop, an office laptop and two models with the same advertised 144 Hz panel will expose identical controls.

Change the refresh rate in Windows 11

  1. Open the display controls. Select Start > Settings > System > Display, then open Advanced display.
  2. Choose a lower available rate. Use the refresh-rate selector and select a value below the current setting, such as 60 Hz if it is offered. The available values are determined by the panel, graphics hardware and driver; Windows does not expose the same choices on every laptop.
  3. Confirm that the screen remains usable. Move windows, scroll and perform your normal tasks. If the lower rate feels uncomfortable, select the next higher option rather than sacrificing usability.
  4. Test on battery. Unplug the charger and use the laptop for a representative task. Compare behavior over similar workloads rather than expecting an identical result every time.

Some panels do not provide a lower manual option. If the selector shows only one rate, Windows cannot create another one; check for graphics-driver or manufacturer updates, but do not assume an update will add a mode the hardware does not support. If an update changes the available choices, retest the setting because driver behavior can affect Dynamic refresh and manufacturer power controls.

Use Dynamic refresh rate when the laptop supports it

Dynamic refresh rate is an adaptive alternative to locking the panel at one value. It can reduce refresh while you read, write or leave a page still, then use a higher rate when scrolling, animation or other activity calls for smoother motion. This can preserve responsiveness without running the panel at its highest rate continuously.

Look for Dynamic refresh rate in the same Settings > System > Display > Advanced display area. The option is conditional: it appears only on supported combinations of panel, graphics hardware, driver and Windows configuration. If it is absent, use a fixed lower rate or the laptop maker’s own panel-saving feature instead. An option missing from Windows is not evidence that the laptop is defective; it may simply lack the required panel or driver support.

Fixed lower rate versus Dynamic refresh rate

Choice How it behaves Advantages Limitations
Fixed lower rate Runs at the selected value all the time Simple, predictable and available on more systems Motion is less smooth during scrolling or games; it cannot react to activity
Dynamic refresh rate Adjusts refresh according to activity when supported Can reduce refresh during static work while retaining smoother motion when needed Not available on every laptop and may behave differently by model or driver

Some manufacturers add their own on-battery panel control. For example, MSI documents a supported Display Power Saver that reduces the panel to 60 Hz or below after AC power is disconnected. That is a model-specific feature, not a universal Windows control. Check your manufacturer’s utility and documentation before assuming the control exists. If the utility has separate AC and battery profiles, verify that the battery profile is the one being changed.

Reduce the display’s other power costs

Lower brightness without making the screen hard to read

Brightness can consume substantial power, especially on a bright high-refresh panel. Use the keyboard brightness keys or Windows’ quick settings to choose the lowest level that remains comfortable in your room. Avoid an unnecessarily bright setting on battery, but do not lower it so far that you strain your eyes and compensate by working longer or reconnecting the charger.

Brightness and refresh rate are separate controls. A lower refresh rate does not automatically make a bright panel efficient, and lowering brightness does not change motion smoothness. Adjust both, then test your normal workload so you know which change helped and which affected comfort.

Shorten screen-off and sleep timers

In Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts (the exact grouping can vary by Windows build), set shorter idle periods for battery operation. Turning the screen off sooner stops the panel from consuming power while you are away. A shorter sleep timeout also limits background activity after you stop using the laptop. Choose values that fit your workflow; an aggressive timeout can interrupt presentations, downloads or long-running tasks.

Use different values for battery and AC power when Windows offers separate choices. A short battery screen-off timer is useful in a café or meeting, while a longer AC timer may be convenient at a desk. Remember that screen-off and sleep are idle protections, not replacements for closing an application that is actively rendering video or synchronizing files.

Choose a power mode that matches the task

Windows 11’s power modes trade performance for energy use. For routine browsing, writing and office work, select Best power efficiency from Settings > System > Power & battery. Windows limits some background activity to reduce consumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Energy saver provides stronger conservation when enabled or when the battery reaches its configured trigger. Depending on the device and Windows build, it can restrict additional background activity and lower display brightness. Because these restrictions can affect responsiveness and performance, use Energy saver for travel, meetings or low-battery situations rather than during a workload that needs full CPU or GPU speed.

For gaming, video editing, 3D work or other demanding tasks, select the mode that provides the performance you need while connected to AC power. On battery, a high-performance mode can increase drain enough to outweigh any benefit from a lower refresh rate. If an application stutters after switching modes, raise the mode for that task instead of assuming the display setting is the only cause.

Find apps and devices that keep using power

Review battery usage by app

  1. Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
  2. Expand Battery usage and review the apps listed for the relevant period.
  3. Look for browsers with many tabs, video or animation sites, synchronization tools, launchers and applications showing substantial background use.
  4. Close programs and tabs you do not need. For an app that must remain installed but should not run continuously, use its Windows background-activity controls when available.

Video playback, animated pages, autoplay media and frequent cloud synchronization can keep the processor, graphics system and network active even when the visible work appears light. After closing unnecessary activity, recheck Battery usage during a comparable session. A browser with one static document open should not be compared with a session playing video, uploading files and running several animated pages.

Disconnect idle peripherals

Remove USB drives, external lighting, receivers, storage devices and other accessories when you are not using them. A connected device may draw power continuously or prevent deeper low-power states. Turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth only when you genuinely do not need the connection; disabling radios while offline can save some energy, but it also prevents network access and connected-device functions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not disconnect a device that is actively saving work or performing a transfer. Finish the operation, eject storage safely when appropriate, and then remove the accessory. Wireless changes are most useful when you are already offline; they are not a substitute for closing a network-heavy application.

How to test whether the change helped

Battery percentage alone is a poor one-session benchmark. Start at a similar charge level, use the same brightness and power mode, and repeat a representative activity such as document work, browsing or video playback. Keep network conditions and connected devices similar. Compare several sessions rather than one trip, because workload, battery temperature and background updates can vary.

Test the fixed lower rate and Dynamic refresh separately if both are available. Note whether scrolling, animation or a game feels acceptable, and record how much charge is used over a similar period. The goal is a practical balance between runtime and comfort, not a laboratory number. Microsoft’s Windows guidance and manufacturer documentation provide qualitative direction, not a guaranteed percentage or duration.

Should you switch from 144 Hz to 60 Hz on battery?

If 60 Hz is available and comfortable, it is a sensible battery-first setting for reading, writing, email and other mostly static work. The trade-off is visibly less fluid scrolling and animation than 120 Hz or 144 Hz. A middle setting can be a better compromise when the panel offers one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Use case Practical setting to try Reason
Reading, documents and email 60 Hz or Dynamic refresh rate Static content does not require maximum motion smoothness
Web browsing with frequent scrolling Dynamic refresh rate or a moderate fixed rate Preserves smoother movement when scrolling while reducing refresh during pauses
Competitive or motion-sensitive gaming Higher supported rate while plugged in; lower rate only if the battery trade-off is acceptable Responsiveness and motion clarity may matter more than maximum runtime
Video editing or graphics work Use the rate required by the workflow; enable a battery-saving mode when performance permits Application and preview requirements vary, and power mode can affect render performance

There is no universally correct 60 Hz, 120 Hz or 144 Hz choice. Select the lowest rate that does not interfere with the task in front of you, and switch back when smooth motion is important. A lower rate is an option, not a requirement: if it causes eye discomfort, missed timing or poor preview quality, use a higher rate and save power elsewhere.

Why your result may differ from another laptop

Runtime is affected by the display technology and size, processor and graphics workload, wireless activity, installed software, ambient conditions and battery age. Manufacturer utilities may also change panel behavior when AC power is removed. Two laptops with the same advertised refresh rate can therefore show different improvements from the same setting.

Official Windows guidance gives qualitative advice rather than a controlled percentage or guaranteed duration. Do not judge the change from one short session: compare similar brightness, applications, network conditions and workload before and after the adjustment. A high-refresh display may be a relatively small part of total use during a GPU-heavy game, but a larger share during light work when the rest of the system is mostly idle.

Use a battery report to separate settings from battery wear

Power-saving settings reduce energy used per charge; they cannot restore capacity that the battery has lost with age. Windows 11 includes a diagnostic report that helps you examine battery use and estimated capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
  2. Run powercfg /batteryreport.
  3. Open the report generated by Windows and review its usage history and capacity estimates.

If the report indicates substantial capacity deterioration, a lower refresh rate may still extend the time available from the remaining charge, but it will not repair the battery. Battery-care settings such as charge limits, conservation modes and health-management controls depend on the laptop maker and model. Use the manufacturer’s current instructions for those features. A report is diagnostic: it does not itself recalibrate, replace or restore the battery.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely explanation What to do
No lower refresh-rate option The panel, driver or graphics configuration exposes only one rate Check Windows and manufacturer updates, verify the laptop is using its intended display driver, and use brightness, power mode and timeout controls if no additional rate exists
Dynamic refresh rate is missing The panel or driver does not support the feature Use a fixed lower rate or an available manufacturer panel-saving control; do not treat Dynamic refresh as universal
Battery life barely changes CPU/GPU work, brightness, background apps, radios or battery wear dominate consumption Review Battery usage, close unnecessary activity, disconnect idle devices, lower brightness and run the battery report
Performance becomes unacceptable Best power efficiency, Energy saver or a lower refresh rate is restricting a demanding workload Use a higher power mode or refresh rate for that task, preferably while connected to AC power
Screen feels uncomfortable at the lower rate Reduced motion smoothness is not suitable for your eyes or workflow Raise the rate one step or enable Dynamic refresh if supported, then save power through brightness, idle timers and background-app controls

A practical battery-saving order of operations

For most Windows 11 users, apply the changes in this order so that each step is easy to evaluate:

  1. Lower the refresh rate in Advanced display, or enable Dynamic refresh rate when offered.
  2. Set brightness to the lowest comfortable level.
  3. Choose Best power efficiency; enable Energy saver when you need additional conservation.
  4. Shorten screen-off and sleep timeouts for battery use.
  5. Inspect Power & battery > Battery usage and close unnecessary background apps, tabs and media.
  6. Disconnect peripherals and disable Wi-Fi or Bluetooth only when they are not needed.
  7. Run powercfg /batteryreport if the runtime remains unexpectedly short, then distinguish battery wear from settings-related drain.

This sequence avoids promising a particular number of extra minutes. It gives you a direct display adjustment first, then addresses the other controllable loads that commonly determine how long a high-refresh-rate laptop lasts away from its charger.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make my laptop battery last longer without making it unusable?

Lower the refresh rate or enable Dynamic refresh rate, reduce brightness to a comfortable level, choose Best power efficiency, shorten battery screen-off and sleep timers, and close apps that show high background use. Keep a higher refresh rate or power mode for tasks that genuinely need smoother motion or more performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does lowering my refresh rate save battery on every laptop?

It can reduce display power use, but the available controls and the size of the benefit vary. Some panels expose only one refresh rate, and a demanding CPU or GPU workload, bright screen, wireless activity or worn battery may dominate total consumption.

Should I switch from 144 Hz to 60 Hz on battery?

For reading, documents and mostly static work, 60 Hz is a reasonable choice if it is available and comfortable. Use Dynamic refresh rate or a middle setting when you scroll frequently, and keep a higher rate for motion-sensitive gaming or work that requires it.

Is Dynamic refresh rate better than locking the screen to 60 Hz?

Neither is universally better. A fixed lower rate is simple and predictable. Dynamic refresh can lower refresh during static activity while retaining smoother motion during scrolling or animation, but it requires a supported panel, graphics configuration and driver.

Why can’t I find Dynamic refresh rate in Windows 11?

The feature is conditional and may be unavailable because of the panel, graphics hardware, driver or Windows configuration. Use a fixed lower rate if one is offered, or check the laptop maker’s supported panel-saving utility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether apps, rather than the screen, are draining my battery?

Open Settings > System > Power & battery, expand Battery usage and review the listed apps. Browsers with video or animated pages, synchronization tools, launchers and other background processes can keep the processor, graphics system and network active.

Will a battery report fix a short battery life?

No. Run powercfg /batteryreport in an administrator Command Prompt to inspect usage history and estimated capacity. The report helps distinguish battery wear from settings-related drain, but it cannot restore lost capacity.

Do I need to buy a power bank, cooling pad or replacement battery for this adjustment?

No product is required to change refresh rate, power mode, brightness or Windows timeouts. A replacement battery is relevant only when capacity has deteriorated and must match the laptop model; a power bank or charger provides external power rather than improving runtime per charge.

The Bottom Line

Lower the refresh rate first, then tune the rest of the system. Use 60 Hz when it is comfortable or enable supported Dynamic refresh rate, reduce brightness, choose Best power efficiency, shorten idle timers and close high-drain apps. Disconnect unused peripherals and check a Windows battery report if runtime remains poor. There is no universal number of minutes gained: the right setting is the lowest refresh rate that still suits your work.
