You improve at EA SPORTS FC 26 fastest by making better decisions before you press a button: choose the pass that matches the runner and space, select the shot that fits the chance, and defend by controlling position before attempting a tackle. Build those decisions in the Training Center, Skill Games, Practice Arena and Kick-Off, then carry one focus into each match.
This guide uses EA’s current FC 26 guidance available on October 13, 2026. Menus, controls and gameplay can change with platform, control configuration and title updates, so use the in-game Button Help or Settings > Basic Controls screen for your actual inputs.
Set up FC 26 so practice teaches the right habits
Before working on technique, remove avoidable uncertainty. A familiar control layout lets you evaluate your decision rather than wondering whether an unexpected result came from the input.
Check your controls in the game
- Open Settings and choose Basic Controls, or open Button Help during a match.
- Confirm the inputs shown for ground pass, through pass, lobbed through pass, driven ground pass and each shot type.
- Play a few passes and shots in the Practice Arena to check that the displayed prompts match your controller.
- Keep the same configuration while learning. Change an assistance option only when you can identify the problem it is meant to solve.
EA’s passing and shooting guides both direct players to the in-game controls because inputs depend on platform and configuration: EA’s passing guide and EA’s shooting guide.

Choose a gameplay preset for the mode you actually play
FC 26 presents two different targets rather than one universally superior beginner setting.
| Preset | EA’s stated focus | Use it when | Beginner implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Competitive | Tuned for head-to-head modes such as Ultimate Team and Clubs, with faster passing and more direct control. | You mainly play online head-to-head matches. | Expect quicker decisions and less time for a loose pass or slow defensive switch. |
| Authentic | Designed for a truer-to-football feel in modes such as Career, including more positionally responsible defenders and simulation-oriented behaviour. | You mainly play Career or want a simulation-style match. | Prioritise shape, patience and realistic spacing instead of treating every attack as a sprint. |
These descriptions come from EA’s FC 26 overview and New Gameplay Features. Pick the preset that matches your mode, then practise under that same feel.
Use a short, focused practice loop
Unstructured matches make it difficult to know what improved. A repeatable loop gives each skill enough attempts for you to notice the cause of an error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Passing block: In the Practice Arena or Training Center, practise one pass type at several distances. Start with an unmarked teammate, then add a defender and repeat.
- Decision block: Have the receiver stand nearby, make a run into space, or become screened by a defender. Choose the pass from the situation rather than cycling through inputs.
- Shooting block: Take attempts from central, angled and tight positions. Use one shot type for several attempts, then change only the shot type while keeping the location similar.
- Match block: Play Kick-Off and carry one objective, such as “find a through pass before shooting” or “jockey without tackling for one possession.”
- Review block: After the match, identify one recurring error and make that the next practice focus. Do not change five settings at once.
EA specifically lists passing and shooting lessons in the Training Center and recommends Skill Games, Kick-Off and Practice Arena for repetition. Its FC PRO Masterclasses also provide lesson topics such as Block, Anticipate and Jockey for follow-on defensive work.

How to choose the right pass
The central passing habit is to read movement and space first. EA puts it this way: “Choosing your pass based on your teammate’s movement and the space around them can help you keep possession and create chances.” Read the complete guidance in How to pass in EA SPORTS FC.
| Match situation | Pass to choose | What it does | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| A nearby teammate has a clear lane | Ground pass | Moves the ball directly to feet for safe possession. | A defender can intercept if you ignore the lane or pass late. |
| A teammate is running into open space | Through pass | Leads the runner rather than passing to the place they occupied. | Too much power sends the ball beyond the runner; too little lets a defender recover. |
| A defender blocks the ground route but space exists behind them | Lobbed through pass | Plays over the defender into the runner’s path. | The ball takes longer to arrive and can give the defence time to adjust. |
| You need quick delivery over distance and the receiver has room | Driven ground pass | Travels faster through midfield or across a longer distance. | The receiver has less time to control a fast ball, especially under pressure. |
Set direction before power
Point toward the teammate or the space you want the receiver to attack, then apply only enough power to cover the distance. A pass aimed at a defender is usually a poor pass regardless of its speed. Scan for a second option before committing when the first lane is narrow.
Pass to the run, not the player’s current location
For a stationary teammate, a ground pass to feet is normally easier to receive. When the teammate accelerates away from you, a through pass can preserve momentum. If a defender steps into the ground lane, switch to a lobbed through pass only when there is visible space beyond that defender; otherwise recycle possession.

Use driven passes deliberately
A driven ground pass is useful when a normal pass would arrive too slowly, but speed is not automatically an advantage. Make sure the receiver has open grass or a clear first touch. Practise the same distance with normal and driven delivery so you can see how much extra control time the receiver needs.

Passing drills that expose mistakes
- Distance ladder: Pass to the same teammate from short, medium and long range, changing power while keeping the target fixed.
- Runner gate: Ask a teammate to run through a marked channel. Try a through pass, then repeat with a defender closing the inside lane.
- Screen test: Place a defender between passer and receiver. Attempt a ground pass once, then choose a lobbed through pass only if the receiver can reach the space behind the defender.
- Two-touch exit: Receive a driven pass and make the next action quickly. If the ball repeatedly runs away, reduce power or create more receiving space.
How to score more goals
Scoring is a combination of aim, power, angle and shot selection. Aim at the part of the goal you want to hit, use less power when close and more power from distance, and do not select a specialised shot merely because it is available. EA’s situation-based explanations are in How to shoot in EA SPORTS FC.
| Chance | Shot choice | Why it fits | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear shooting lane with no special goalkeeper movement | Regular shot | A straightforward finish with predictable preparation. | Place the aim away from the goalkeeper without adding unnecessary power. |
| You want the ball to bend toward a corner | Finesse shot | Adds curl toward the chosen target. | Allow for the curve; aiming as though it were a straight shot can pull the ball wide. |
| The goalkeeper has moved away from the goal line | Chip shot | Lifts the ball over an advanced goalkeeper. | It is a poor choice when the goalkeeper is set close to the line or the angle is too tight. |
| You have time and space for a longer wind-up | Power shot | Uses extra preparation for a high-power attempt. | Do not start it while a defender is close enough to block or dispossess you. |
| You are close to goal or one-on-one and want the ball kept low | Low Driven shot | Keeps the finish near the ground. | Control the power; a low attempt still misses if the aim is wrong. |
| An airborne ball arrives at a playable height | Volley or header | Finishes without waiting for the ball to settle. | Height, body position and movement determine which contact is available. |
Build the finish in three checks
- Check the goalkeeper: Is the keeper on the line, moving out or already committed?
- Check the defender: Is there room for a normal strike, or will a longer wind-up be blocked?
- Check the target: Choose a specific side or height of the goal before setting power.
FC 26’s Low Driven option can be added to most shot types by pressing the shot input again after setting power. EA notes that the Low Driven modifier cannot be added to a Chip Shot. Because the exact input depends on your setup and can change with an edition or update, verify the sequence in Button Help before drilling it.
Shooting drills
- Angle circuit: Shoot from the centre, both sides of the box and a tight angle, using regular shots first. Note where your aim becomes too central or too wide.
- Power ladder: From one location, try low, medium and higher power. Keep the target constant so you learn the distance each level covers.
- Keeper decision: Repeat the same approach while the goalkeeper stays on the line, comes out, or is screened. Choose regular, chip or low-driven finishes according to the situation.
- First-touch finish: Receive a pass, take one controlled touch and shoot. If the touch carries you into a defender, create a wider angle before striking.
How to defend as a beginner
Defending starts with positioning and patience. Your first job is to keep the attacker from reaching the most dangerous space; a tackle is the follow-up, not the default opening move.

| Jockey setting | How EA describes it | Good practice objective |
|---|---|---|
| Assisted | Adjusts your player’s speed to stay close to opponents. | Learn to maintain a goal-side position while you concentrate on the attacker’s next action. |
| Manual | Gives you full control of positioning. | Practise matching the attacker’s angle and distance without relying on automatic speed adjustment. |
Neither setting is established as universally best. Start with the one that lets you keep shape, then test the other in the Practice Arena. The official setting descriptions are in EA SPORTS FC 26 Accessibility Resources.
Understand the defending modes
FC 26 offers Advanced, Tactical and Legacy defending. The mode changes how tackle types are selected, so learn the behaviour of your chosen mode before judging your timing. EA notes that Legacy defending is unavailable in the Competitive preset. If a control appears missing, check the preset and the Basic Controls screen rather than assuming your controller is faulty.
Use a simple defensive sequence
- Select the nearest useful defender: Choose a player who can protect the dangerous lane, not merely the one closest to the ball.
- Recover goal-side: Move between the attacker and your goal so a direct run cannot immediately split the defence.
- Jockey at a manageable distance: Stay close enough to challenge but far enough to react to a cut or change of direction.
- Show a low-risk side: Angle your body to discourage the route toward the centre or the clearest shooting lane.
- Tackle when the ball is exposed: Attempt the challenge after a heavy touch, a predictable turn or a pass that leaves the attacker isolated.
- Switch and recover: If the first defender is beaten, switch early to the next player who can cover the run instead of chasing from behind.
Decide what Pass Block Assistance should do for you
Pass Block Assistance controls whether AI- and user-controlled players attempt automatic interceptions. Treat it as a learning aid to test, not a guarantee that lanes will be closed. If your players step out and lose shape, try a lower level or more manual control; if you consistently miss obvious interceptions while learning, test the assisted behaviour and observe when it triggers.

- Contain drill: Let an attacker approach without tackling. Your goal is to keep them outside the most dangerous central lane for several seconds.
- Trigger drill: Challenge only after the attacker takes a heavy touch. This teaches patience and reduces lunges from the wrong distance.
- Cover drill: Control a second defender and protect the passing lane to a runner while the first defender pressures the ball.
- Cross and cutback drill: Track the runner, then check the space behind you before stepping toward the ball. The point is to defend both the immediate carrier and the next pass.

Turn the skills into a match plan
When you have the ball
- Scan for a nearby safe option before forcing a forward pass.
- Match the pass to the movement: feet for a stationary teammate, a through pass for a run, a lobbed through pass over a blocker, or a driven ground pass when the receiver has room and speed matters.
- After the pass, move to create the next angle instead of standing behind the defender who just screened you.
- Near the box, identify the goalkeeper’s position and choose the shot before the final touch.
When possession changes
- Recover the centre first; chasing the ball with the wrong player can open the route you are trying to defend.
- Use jockey movement to delay the carrier while a teammate recovers.
- Track the most dangerous runner and only step out when the ball or lane is exposed.
- After winning the ball, make the first pass simple if your team is still stretched.
Use one objective per match
Examples include completing five attacks with a ground pass before attempting a through ball, taking only regular shots until your aim improves, or defending an entire possession without an early tackle. A narrow objective creates feedback you can act on; changing the objective every few minutes does not.
Troubleshoot the mistakes beginners see most
| Symptom | Likely decision error | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Passes are intercepted in midfield. | You are forcing a lane or using too much power before checking the defender. | Use a safe ground pass, recycle the ball and wait for the runner to clear the lane. |
| Through balls run beyond the attacker. | Power does not match the runner’s distance or speed. | Reduce power and practise the same run from several starting positions. |
| Driven passes are impossible to control. | The receiver lacks space for the faster delivery. | Use a normal pass or create separation before driving the ball. |
| Shots go straight at the goalkeeper. | Aim is being set late or toward the keeper’s position. | Choose a specific corner before powering the shot and use less power close to goal. |
| Power shots are blocked. | The wind-up begins with a defender within tackling or blocking distance. | Take a regular or low-driven finish, or create room before charging a power shot. |
| The goalkeeper catches chips easily. | The keeper has not moved far enough from the line. | Use a regular finish when the keeper is set, reserving chips for an advanced keeper. |
| Defenders are pulled out of shape. | You are switching to the nearest player and chasing the ball. | Select the player covering the dangerous lane and jockey until support arrives. |
| Tackles miss or produce fouls. | The challenge starts before the attacker exposes the ball. | Delay, match the run and tackle after a heavy touch or predictable turn. |
| Inputs do not match this article or the on-screen prompts. | Platform, configuration, preset or title update differs. | Open Button Help or Settings > Basic Controls and practise the displayed input. |
Keep advice current as FC 26 changes
EA has published gameplay changes across areas such as dribbling, positioning, shielding, goalkeeping and passing. The Gameplay Deep Dive and October Feedback Update show why exact behaviour can be patch-sensitive. Treat the decision rules in this guide as durable fundamentals, but recheck controls and any timing-sensitive technique after a title update.
Do not chase a supposed universal “meta” setting while you are still missing basic passing lanes, shot selection or defensive positioning. A preset, assistance option or PlayStyle can change how an action feels, but it cannot replace reading the next space and choosing an appropriate action.
A practical progression checklist
- Can you identify whether a teammate is stationary, running into space or screened before selecting a pass?
- Can you vary pass power without changing the target?
- Can you explain why a regular, Finesse, Chip, Power or Low Driven shot fits the chance in front of you?
- Can you keep a defender goal-side while jockeying instead of immediately tackling?
- Do you know where to verify every input in your current configuration?
- Can you carry one specific objective through a Kick-Off match and identify one correction afterward?
When those answers become yes, add complexity one layer at a time: tighter spaces, faster opponents, more manual assistance and more demanding match modes. The aim is not to memorise isolated tricks; it is to make the correct decision early enough that the execution has room to work.
