To improve at Armed Police Batrider, separate two goals that often conflict: collecting valuable medals for score and keeping the game’s internal rank high enough that difficulty stays manageable. In Batrider, a lower total-rank value means higher difficulty; rank changes enemy frequency and count, durability, attack frequency, some bullet speeds, and item fall speed. The detailed numbers below apply to the Japanese B version dated 1998-02-13, the version documented by the specialist rank-system guide.
That guide documents medal value bands and their rank effects, but not a complete, verified medal-chain reset rule or universal route. You can therefore build a disciplined medal practice routine without pretending that an undocumented timing window is established. For a low-rank run, prioritize survival, avoid unnecessary special-power-up activations, and treat high-value medals as a deliberate score-versus-difficulty choice.
What “rank” means in Armed Police Batrider
Batrider’s rank is an internal difficulty meter, not a player league, medal tier, or online ranking. The game continually adjusts challenge using total rank. When the total-rank value falls, the game becomes harder; when it rises, difficulty is reduced.
According to the Japanese B-version technical reference, rank can affect:

- How often enemies appear and how many are present.
- Enemy durability.

- How quickly items fall.
This inverted relationship is the key to planning. A scoring action that lowers total rank is not a “rank-up” in the usual sense: it makes the next part of the stage more demanding. Keep that terminology in mind when reading values such as -0x100.
Medal values: what is documented
The rank guide groups medals by point value. In the Japanese B version dated 1998-02-13, the effect on total rank is:
| Medal value | Total-rank change | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 100–900 points | No change listed | Collecting these adds score without the documented medal-rank penalty. |
| 1,000–9,000 points | -0x100 |
A small reduction in total rank, therefore a small increase in difficulty. |
| 10,000 points | -0x200 |
Twice the listed reduction of a 1,000–9,000-point medal. |
These are hexadecimal game-unit deltas, not percentages. For scale, 0x200 is twice 0x100; later in the table, 0x8000 is 128 times 0x100. The values come from a community-maintained specialist reference, not from a published player-outcome statistic or an official developer manual.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe important decision is incremental. A single 10,000-point medal only applies the listed -0x200 change, but repeated high-value pickups add repeated reductions while other rank changes continue in the background. A score route should budget for that pressure rather than treating every medal as free.
How to approach medal chains without inventing a rule
What the available documentation confirms
The technical page confirms that medal value affects score and that the 1,000-point-and-higher bands lower total rank. It does not provide a complete, independently verifiable description of medal-drop sequencing, the exact chain-reset trigger, a miss timeout, or a guaranteed chain route.
That means a guide promising a universal “pick up the next medal within X frames” rule would be going beyond the documented evidence. Treat any such route as a player-discovered technique that must be tested on your specific board, emulator, or release.

A reliable practice method
- Record the context of every medal. Note stage, enemy or object that produced it, point value, and whether another medal was already active.
- Separate value from continuity. First learn where medals appear; only then test whether a pickup changes the next drop. This prevents a high-value score event from being mistaken for proof of a chain rule.
- Repeat the same setup. Use the same course, character team, weapon state, and starting conditions while testing. A changed route can alter enemy timing and make a supposed reset inconsistent.
- Measure consequences, not assumptions. Watch whether the next medal’s value, location, or timing changes. If you cannot reproduce the result, record it as an observation rather than a guaranteed mechanic.
- Choose a policy before a run. A survival run can collect 100–900-point medals freely according to the documented rank table, while a score run can accept the extra difficulty from 1,000-point-and-higher medals.
A player-authored route note explains that its writer sometimes ignores medals because a particular route has no ordinary stage progression and few collection opportunities. The same note mentions pursuing 30,000 × 2 or 50,000 × 2 scoring opportunities. Those are route-specific comments, not proof of a general medal-chain system; read the player strategy note as an example of route prioritization rather than a universal rule.

- Skip a high-value medal if reaching it requires crossing an active bullet pattern or abandoning a safe position.
- Skip it when your current power state cannot clear the next attack reliably; the documented rank reduction is permanent enough to matter, while a lost life removes score opportunities and resources.
- Collect it when the route is already safe and you have deliberately accepted a harder rank state for score.
This is not a claim that skipping a medal resets a chain. It is a risk-management rule that remains valid even while the exact chain behavior is unverified.
How rank changes over time
Frame rank and the starting value
The guide distinguishes frame rank from total rank. It states that frame rank starts at 4 plus your remaining credits. Total rank then falls by a fixed amount each frame according to the current frame-rank value. As frame rank rises, the ongoing downward pressure on total rank becomes stronger.
Frame rank cannot decrease once it has risen during the run. Continuing resets it, so a continue is a new rank state rather than a continuation of the old frame-rank history.
Special-power-up activations
| Activation | Frame-rank increase | Decision implication |
|---|---|---|
| Shot special power-up | +1 | Immediate shot strength versus a lasting increase in rank pressure. |
| Option special power-up | +1 | Use when the extra firepower or coverage is worth future difficulty. |
| Special extend | +2 | A substantial frame-rank increase; do not trigger casually for a marginal benefit. |
Because the increase cannot be undone during the run, the practical rule is simple: activate a special when it prevents a likely death, secures a major scoring section, or solves a power problem—not merely because the meter is available. The immediate benefit may still be correct; the mistake is ignoring the lasting rank cost.

Items that reduce total rank
Item collection generally lowers total rank, but the size varies greatly by item. The following examples are from the same Japanese B-version table:

| Item | Total-rank change | Relative scale |
|---|---|---|
| Small shot item | -0x100 |
Baseline example. |
| Large shot item | -0x8000 |
128 times the small-shot delta. |
| Large option item | -0x8000 |
Same listed reduction as a large shot item. |
| Small bomb item | -0x800 |
Eight times the small-shot delta. |
| Large bomb item | -0x20000 |
Far larger than a medal reduction. |
| 10,000-point medal | -0x200 |
Small compared with the listed large power-up effects. |
Do not convert these hexadecimal values into casual percentages. They are internal deltas whose impact depends on the current rank state, frame-rank pressure, course, and other events. The useful comparison is magnitude: a high-value medal has a documented effect, but a large power-up item can change total rank by far more.
Bombs, deaths, extends, sealing and grazing
Bomb use is not one single mechanic
The guide lists no total-rank change for ordinary bomb use. It separately lists a -0x8000 total-rank change for a partial bomb and for using a bomb while your bomb stock is already full. In other words, bombing to survive is not automatically a rank penalty, while certain wasteful or overstock situations can lower total rank.
Use a bomb when it protects a life, preserves a scoring route, or clears a pattern you cannot safely handle. Do not repeatedly bomb at full stock simply to manipulate rank; the documented full-stock effect moves difficulty in the harder direction.

A death raises total rank, which lowers difficulty. That sounds like a rank-control tool, but the broader game reference cautions that rank gained from extends can outweigh rank reduced by deaths and describes intentional suicide as generally of limited value. You also lose a life, positioning, power, and potential score.
Play a death as a consequence to avoid, not as your default rank-management button. If you are deciding between bombing and accepting a death, ordinary bomb use has no listed total-rank penalty, making the bomb the more controllable survival option when you have one available.
Bullet sealing and grazing
The rank guide states that bullet sealing lowers total rank and grazing raises it. Sealing is counted by firing event, with enemy-specific exceptions; grazing is counted by score increments. Both systems can therefore alter rank while you are simply fighting and moving through a stage.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Advanced players can use this information to understand why two otherwise similar runs drift apart. Beginners should not graze deliberately as a rank strategy: the potential rank increase is inseparable from the risk of placing the hitbox near bullets. Survive first, then study how your normal movement and firing pattern affect rank.

Three practical play policies
| Policy | Medal choice | Specials | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low-rank stability | Prefer 100–900-point medals; skip risky high-value pickups. | Use only for a clear survival or power breakpoint. | Learning stages, reaching later content, and keeping patterns manageable. |
| Balanced score | Take high-value medals when the route is safe; skip those that force a dangerous detour. | Spend specials on sections where the score or survival return is immediate. | Improving score without letting rank pressure dominate the run. |
| Maximum score | Pursue documented high-value opportunities and accept their rank reductions. | Plan activations around scoring sections, including the frame-rank cost. | Runs where score matters more than maintaining the easiest possible patterns. |
No policy is universally best. The correct choice depends on whether your current limit is survival, power, or score. A route that is easy at stable rank can become difficult after several high-value medals and special activations, while a score route may intentionally accept that difficulty.
A step-by-step low-rank practice plan
- Start with a known version. Use the Japanese B-version mechanics only if your release matches the documented scope; otherwise treat the numbers as a hypothesis to verify.
- Count your credits. Your initial frame rank is 4 plus remaining credits, so record the credit setting before comparing attempts.
- Collect safe small medals. The table lists no total-rank change for 100–900-point medals, but do not enter danger merely to collect one.
- Delay specials. Remember that shot and option specials add one frame-rank point and a special extend adds two.
- Use ordinary bombs before gambling a life. The guide lists no rank change for ordinary use, whereas a death costs a life and may not provide useful net rank relief.
- Track large items. A large shot, option, or bomb item has a much larger listed rank effect than a high-value medal, so note when one changes the feel of the stage.
- Review deaths and extends together. Do not judge a death’s rank effect in isolation; the reference warns that extend-related rank can outweigh reductions from deaths.
- Repeat the same route. Compare runs only after keeping character team, course, credit setting, and medal policy consistent.
A step-by-step score-focused medal plan
- Map safe collection points. Identify where medals appear and whether the pickup can be made without crossing a dangerous pattern.
- Classify each pickup by value band. Mark 100–900, 1,000–9,000, and 10,000-point medals separately because their documented rank effects differ.
- Estimate the rank budget qualitatively. Several 10,000-point medals each add
-0x200; special activations and large items may have much larger effects. - Reserve power for the collection route. If a special makes a high-value pickup safe, compare its +1 or +2 frame-rank increase with the score and survival benefit.
- Keep a no-medal control run. A run that ignores high-value medals shows how much of the later difficulty comes from medal choices rather than execution drift.
- Change one variable at a time. Test the same medal route with and without one pickup before drawing conclusions about chain behavior.
This method gives you evidence about your own route without claiming that the game has a particular undocumented reset window.
Title rank, course limits and version caveats
The title screen has another rank-related state. The technical guide describes title rank as ranging from C0, the hardest after power-on, to 00, the easiest. It falls by two for each return to the title screen during attract loops and contributes to course-dependent starting rank.
Those conditions matter when comparing arcade-board sessions. Operator settings, attract behavior, course selection, emulation, and later ports may not expose the same starting state. The guide also says the lower bound appears to be zero in Advanced course and is not researched for other courses, so do not apply that bound universally.
The broader game reference notes that version B removed an infinite pattern found after the original release. Keep that release-history statement separate from the numeric rank table: the table is explicitly scoped to Japanese B ver dated 1998-02-13.

Troubleshooting common training problems
“The same medal route feels harder every attempt.”
Check special activations, large power-up pickups, full-stock or partial bombs, and your credit count. Frame rank never decreases after it rises, and total rank also changes through ordinary play, sealing, grazing, and medal value.
“I skipped medals but rank still became difficult.”
Skipping high-value medals removes only that documented source of rank reduction. Special power-ups, item collection, frame-by-frame decay, and firing or grazing behavior still affect the state.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“I died to lower rank and the next section was not much easier.”
A death raises total rank, but the reference warns that extends can add substantial rank and offset that relief. The life, power, and route cost can also outweigh a modest difficulty reduction.
“My modern version does not match the table.”
Confirm the exact release and course. The numeric values are for Japanese B ver dated 1998-02-13, while title-rank behavior and lower-bound information are course- and board-dependent. Record your version before treating a discrepancy as an execution error.
The practical takeaway
Think of every high-value medal as a score purchase that also spends some of your difficulty margin. Keep 100–900-point medals in your normal survival route when they are safe, take 1,000–9,000 and 10,000-point medals when the scoring objective justifies their documented reductions, and account for special activations and large items first because their listed rank effects can be much larger. Use bombs to preserve lives, avoid deliberate suicides as a routine tool, and test any claimed medal-chain sequence on the exact version you play instead of relying on an unverified timing rule.
