For a sharper, steadier anime picture on PS5, first verify the console’s video output, set HDR to On When Supported, choose the streaming app’s highest quality option, and then test connection stability. These changes remove common setup problems, but they cannot turn a low-resolution stream into native 4K. The service, episode, subscription plan, app, TV, HDMI path and network determine the quality you actually receive.
If an episode still looks blurry, work through the checks below in order. Start with the PS5 signal, then the app, then the network and service requirements. This order separates a console configuration issue from a soft source master or an adaptive stream.
What the PS5 can—and cannot—improve
PS5 output resolution and the video resolution supplied by a streaming service are separate. Sony states that the console detects a TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution. That means a compatible 4K television can receive a 2160p output signal, but only if the app and title provide a sufficiently high-resolution source. The PS5 does not create missing detail in a 720p or 1080p stream.

The same distinction applies to HDR. A PS5 can output HDR, yet an anime episode may be mastered in SDR, may not carry an HDR version, or may be converted by the console rather than displayed natively. A higher output setting is therefore not proof that the stream itself is 4K or HDR.

- Console output: what the PS5 sends through HDMI after negotiating with the display.
- Source stream: the resolution, bitrate, color format and HDR version supplied by the service for that title.
- Display path: the TV’s panel, HDR capability and HDMI/HDCP support.
- Delivery conditions: the app, plan and network conditions that can cause adaptive quality changes.
Use the procedure below to confirm each layer instead of assuming that a soft image is a fault in the console.
1. Check the PS5 video-output signal
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Menu names can vary slightly with system software and language, but the Video Output screen exposes the settings needed for this check.
- Review Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI-device information. This shows what the PS5 is actually negotiating with the TV or receiver, not merely what the TV advertises on its box.
- Leave Resolution on Automatic for normal use. Automatic lets the PS5 select the highest mode supported by the connected equipment. A manual setting is useful only as a diagnostic test or when a particular display requires it.
- With a compatible 4K television and HDMI path, confirm that the active signal is 2160p (4K). If the console reports 1080p, check the TV input, receiver or switch between the PS5 and TV before changing streaming-app settings.
- Reopen the app after correcting an output change. Some apps establish their playback mode when they start, so restarting playback ensures the new signal is being used.
A 2160p signal confirms the console-to-TV output mode; it does not confirm that an anime episode is being delivered in 4K. Check the title and service requirements separately.
When the PS5 reports the wrong resolution
If a 4K TV is connected but the signal remains 1080p, temporarily connect the PS5 directly to a known-compatible HDMI input, bypassing an older receiver or splitter. Confirm that the TV input is configured for its enhanced or high-bandwidth mode if the television requires that setting. Then check Current Video Output Signal again. Do not replace a functioning HDMI cable solely in the hope of increasing resolution; the relevant requirement for some services is a compatible HDMI/HDCP path, not a newer cable label.
2. Set HDR for mixed SDR and HDR anime
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR. Start with On When Supported. In this mode, the PS5 uses HDR when the app and content support it and leaves unsupported content in SDR.

Always On converts non-HDR apps to HDR output. That can look preferable on one TV, but it is not an automatic quality upgrade: conversion cannot add source detail and may change brightness, contrast or color compared with the original SDR presentation. Compare the modes on your own display only after confirming that the source itself offers HDR.
- Select On When Supported.
- Run Adjust HDR from the same Video Output area if the image is unusually dark, highlights clip, or shadow detail disappears. Follow all calibration screens with the TV in the picture mode used for streaming.
- Play one known SDR episode and one title marked HDR, if the service supplies those labels. Check that the TV changes modes only for the supported title.
Sony notes that every PS5 has 4K and HDR capabilities, but the resulting image depends on the complete home-entertainment setup. A non-HDR TV, an incompatible HDMI input or a display path that cannot pass the required signal will limit the result.

Streaming apps control the source quality independently of the PS5’s output menu. Open the player’s gear or playback settings while an episode is playing and select the highest available option. The exact labels and controls vary by service, plan and device.
Crunchyroll
Crunchyroll documents three quality choices: Highest, Moderate and Data Saver. Choose Highest when it is available. “Highest” means the best quality the service can provide for that title and session; it is not a promise that every episode is 1080p or 4K.
Crunchyroll also uses adaptive bitrate delivery. The player can lower quality when available bandwidth or connection stability falls and raise it again when conditions improve. Therefore, a Highest selection does not lock the stream to one resolution. If the image starts sharp and becomes soft during busy network periods, continue with the connection tests in the next section.

Netflix
The Netflix app is available on PS5 and PS5 Pro and can stream compatible titles up to 4K Ultra HD. The title must carry the appropriate Ultra HD or HDR designation, the subscription must include the required tier, the TV must support the format, and the HDMI path must meet Netflix’s HDCP requirement.
Netflix’s PlayStation help page lists 25 Mbps for Ultra HD-marked titles and 15 Mbps for HDR. Its general speed-recommendation table lists 3 Mbps for 720p HD, 5 Mbps for 1080p Full HD and 15 Mbps for 4K UHD. These figures come from different Netflix guidance pages, so treat them as service recommendations rather than a universal PS5 threshold. In every case, the connection needs to be stable, not merely fast during a short speed test.
Other services
For an app not covered above, look for a quality, data-usage or playback-quality control and choose its highest setting. Verify the title’s format badge and plan limits. If no resolution selector exists, the service is probably managing quality automatically; forcing the PS5 to 4K will not override that behavior.
4. Test connection stability, not just advertised speed
An internet plan can be fast enough on paper while the PS5 experiences Wi-Fi interference, congestion or competing traffic. Use these checks as a diagnosis rather than a promise that wired networking will make a stable stream sharper.
- Try Ethernet. If the router is close enough, connect the PS5 with an Ethernet cable and replay the same scene. Crunchyroll’s troubleshooting guidance recommends Ethernet for the best connection, but that advice is general connectivity guidance and does not guarantee a picture improvement on PS5.
- Improve Wi-Fi conditions. Move the access point or PS5 to reduce walls and distance, and avoid placing the router inside a cabinet or beside sources of interference. Reconnect the PS5 to the intended network before retesting.
- Pause competing traffic. Stop large downloads, cloud backups, game updates and video calls on other devices while testing. A stream that improves immediately points to congestion or contention rather than a TV-resolution problem.
- Restart the router. Power-cycle the router, wait for it to reconnect fully, then relaunch the app. This is a basic recovery step for transient network faults.
- Compare the same episode. Use the same timestamp before and after each change. Different episodes can have different masters, grain and compression, so switching titles can produce a misleading comparison.
If a wired test is stable but Wi-Fi repeatedly causes quality drops, the network path is the likely constraint. If both paths behave identically and the title is consistently soft, investigate the source, plan and display requirements instead of buying networking hardware.

5. Confirm service, plan, title and display requirements
Before troubleshooting the console further, check that the content is eligible for the quality you expect. A service may offer 4K or HDR on selected titles only, and a plan may limit playback even when the app and TV support the format.

The numbers above are not interchangeable universal thresholds. Netflix presents the 25 Mbps figure in PlayStation-specific Ultra HD guidance and 15 Mbps in its general UHD table; preserve that distinction when evaluating a connection.

The episode is not available in native 4K
Many anime releases are supplied in HD or with deliberate softness, film grain and other characteristics of the original master. Neither a 4K PS5 output nor HDR conversion restores detail that is absent from the source. Check the service’s title information rather than assuming that every series has a 4K or HDR version.
Adaptive bitrate has reduced the stream
A player may begin at a high bitrate and step down during congestion. Softness that changes over time, especially when other devices are active, is consistent with adaptive delivery. Pause competing traffic, test Ethernet and replay the same timestamp to distinguish this from a permanently soft master.
The plan or title does not include the premium format
On services with tiered plans, the app may play the title successfully while withholding Ultra HD or HDR. Verify both the subscription tier and the title badge. A successful login does not prove eligibility for the highest stream.

The HDMI path cannot pass the required signal
For Netflix Ultra HD, the connected display path must include an HDMI port supporting HDCP 2.2 or later. An older receiver, switch or TV input can force a lower mode even when the panel itself is 4K. Test the PS5 directly on the appropriate TV input and inspect the PS5’s Current Video Output Signal.
HDR is being converted or miscalibrated
Always On can convert SDR content, and incorrect HDR calibration can make a picture look too dark or washed out rather than sharper. Use On When Supported, run Adjust HDR, and compare native SDR and HDR titles separately.
A decision path for a soft or fluctuating picture
- Soft from the first second on every title: check the title’s available resolution, plan eligibility and the PS5’s Current Video Output Signal.
- Sharp at first, then softens: test Wi-Fi stability, pause competing traffic, try Ethernet and restart the router.
- Only HDR titles look wrong: confirm TV HDR support, use On When Supported, check the HDMI input and run Adjust HDR.
- Only one service looks soft: inspect that app’s quality setting, title badge and plan. Do not change global PS5 settings before checking the service.
- Only one TV input or receiver path fails: connect the PS5 directly to a compatible HDMI input and verify HDCP support for the service.
- Every service and title looks the same after these checks: compare the TV’s reported input signal and the source labels. At that point, the limitation is more likely the display, source master or connection environment than a hidden PS5 “enhancement” setting.
What not to expect from PS5 picture settings
- Outputting 4K does not upscale a low-resolution stream into native 4K. It only sets the console-to-display output mode.
- Always On HDR is not universally better. It converts unsupported apps instead of revealing a native HDR master.
- Ethernet is a stability test, not a resolution upgrade. It helps when Wi-Fi is the problem and may make no visible difference on an already stable wired or wireless connection.
- PSSR is not a streaming-app solution. PlayStation describes it in the context of certain compatible games; it should not be presented as an anime-video enhancement.
- A new HDMI cable is not automatically required. First verify the TV input, HDMI path and HDCP capability. Replace hardware only when the existing path fails those requirements or is damaged.
A repeatable comparison method
When judging whether a change helped, keep every variable except one constant. Use the same PS5, TV input, episode, timestamp, app profile and display picture mode. Record the PS5’s Current Video Output Signal, whether HDR is active, whether the app is set to its highest quality and whether other devices are using the connection. Make one change, replay the same scene and note whether the image is sharper, steadier or merely brighter.
This method prevents common false conclusions: comparing two different anime masters, mistaking HDR brightness for added detail, or crediting Ethernet for an improvement caused by a paused download. It also makes it clear when the service simply does not offer a higher-quality version of the episode.
Recommended baseline configuration
- Use a compatible 4K TV input and connect the PS5 directly while diagnosing the setup.
- Set Resolution to Automatic; verify 2160p in Current Video Output Signal when the display supports it.
- Set HDR to On When Supported, then run Adjust HDR if necessary.
- Choose Highest in Crunchyroll or the equivalent highest-quality control in another service.
- Confirm the title’s resolution/HDR badge and the subscription plan’s eligibility.
- Test a stable wired connection or improve Wi-Fi conditions, with competing traffic paused.
- For Netflix Ultra HD, verify the TV and HDMI input support HDCP 2.2 or later and compare the PlayStation-specific speed guidance with the general Netflix table.
This baseline gives the app and display the opportunity to use the best source they support without forcing SDR material through HDR conversion or confusing console output with stream resolution.
