Use the destination browser’s built-in import tool first. Select the old browser, choose the data categories you need, and run the migration. If the old browser is not detected, move bookmarks with an HTML export. Passwords often require a separate CSV export and import, with steps that vary by browser, operating system, and version. Verify the results before retiring the old browser profile; importing adds data and does not erase the source browser.
Choose the migration route before you start
Browser migration is not one single transfer. Bookmarks, passwords, history, extensions, autofill data, search engines, and home-page settings can follow different paths. The destination browser decides which source browsers it recognizes and which categories it can read.

Keep both browsers installed and signed in until you have checked important bookmarks and logins. Google’s Chrome Help describes the goal this way: “You can switch browsers without losing your settings and bookmarks for your favorite websites.” The import process adds selected data; the instructions do not say that it removes the old browser’s profile.

Prepare the old browser
Save open tabs you want to keep
Open tabs are not automatically the same thing as bookmarks. If a tab represents a page you may need later, save it before migration. Mozilla’s Chrome-to-Firefox instructions specifically recommend saving open Chrome tabs into a bookmark folder. Give the folder a recognizable name, such as “Migration tabs,” so it is easy to find after import.

Make sure the source profile is available
Direct import normally reads the old browser’s local profile. If the destination browser cannot see it, confirm that the old browser is installed on the same computer and that you are using the intended operating-system account and browser profile. If the browser is not listed, do not keep retrying the same wizard: use the HTML route for bookmarks and check the destination browser’s current password instructions for a CSV route.
Decide what to migrate
Import only what you need. Typical categories include bookmarks, browsing history, saved passwords, the default homepage, default search engines, extensions, and form-autofill data, but no browser supports every category from every source. Record any settings that affect your daily work, such as a custom start page or search provider, because a setting that is not offered by the import dialog must be recreated manually.
Use the destination browser’s direct import tool
Chrome as the destination
Chrome’s import documentation lists browsing history, the default homepage, bookmarks, default search engines, and saved passwords as examples of data that may be available, depending on the browser you are importing from. Open Chrome’s settings and its import-bookmarks-and-settings option, choose the old browser, select the categories offered for that source, and start the import. The exact list is determined by Chrome and can change with the source browser and version.
If Chrome does not offer the old browser, export bookmarks as an HTML file from the old browser and use Chrome’s bookmark import-from-file option. Chrome’s Bookmark Manager supports exporting bookmarks as HTML, which makes the file usable even when a direct browser connection is unavailable.
Firefox as the destination
In current Firefox help, the documented path is Settings, then the Import Browser Data section, then Import Data. Choose the source browser and select the categories Firefox presents. Firefox documentation identifies bookmarks, saved passwords, history, extensions, and form-autofill data as examples, but the available selection depends on the source and platform. Firefox may ask for the system password before it can read protected browser data.

Mozilla’s general import guide explains that the wizard may not list every browser. When the source is absent, export bookmarks from that browser as HTML and import the file into Firefox. This fallback transfers bookmark data, not the source browser’s entire profile.
Edge as the destination
Microsoft documents direct browser-data import in Edge. Use Edge’s import browser-data flow, select the source browser and the categories offered, and complete the wizard. For favorites, an HTML file is also supported. Microsoft says imported favorites appear in a folder on the Favorites bar; the folder may be named Imported.

Passwords have a separate Edge flow: Settings > Profiles > Import browser data > Other import locations > Import passwords now. Select the Passwords CSV file and import it. Microsoft says the imported passwords are added to Edge’s saved passwords.
Move bookmarks with an HTML file
Export from the old browser
- Open the old browser’s bookmark or favorites manager.
- Use its export command and choose HTML as the file format.
- Save the file in a private, easy-to-find folder. Bookmark HTML normally contains page addresses and folder names, so treat it as personal data even though it does not contain passwords.
- If you saved open tabs into a folder, confirm that the folder is included in the export.
Import into the new browser
- Open the destination browser’s bookmarks or favorites manager.
- Choose the command to import bookmarks or favorites from an HTML file.
- Select the exported file and allow the import to finish.
- Look for the imported folders in the bookmarks bar or bookmarks library. In Edge, Microsoft says the result may appear in an Imported folder on the Favorites bar.
HTML is a useful fallback because Chrome, Firefox, and Edge each document an export-and-import workflow. It does not carry passwords, browsing history, extensions, or other profile settings; those require their own supported route.
Prevent duplicate bookmark clutter
Run an HTML import once, then inspect the resulting folders before trying again. Repeating an import can create duplicate folders or duplicate links. If the first attempt appears incomplete, compare a few known folders and links before rerunning it, and choose a new destination folder when the browser offers that choice.

Move saved passwords safely
Why passwords need separate planning
Password migration is more restricted than bookmark migration because browsers protect saved credentials. A direct browser import may work for one source and platform but be unavailable for another. Firefox’s current Chrome-switch documentation says automatic Chrome password import is no longer available on Windows and directs users to export a CSV for migration; the same guidance flags limitations for Linux. Treat those statements as platform- and version-sensitive rather than assuming that every Chrome-to-Firefox installation behaves identically.
Export a password CSV only when the destination supports it
Check the destination browser’s current help before creating an export. If it supports CSV import, use the old browser’s password manager to export a Passwords CSV, save it locally, and avoid sending it by email, uploading it to shared storage, or leaving it in a synchronized folder. The CSV is readable text containing login information.
Import the CSV into Edge
- In Edge, open Settings.
- Select Profiles.
- Choose Import browser data.
- Open Other import locations.
- Select Import passwords now.
- Choose the Passwords CSV file and complete the import.
- Open Edge’s saved-passwords area and verify several important accounts.
Microsoft states that imported passwords are added to Edge’s saved passwords. The exact account list is not established by the import itself, so verify critical logins individually.
Use the documented CSV route for Chrome to Firefox when required
For Chrome-to-Firefox migration, follow Mozilla’s current switching guide and import-data documentation. On Windows, Mozilla says the automatic Chrome password route is no longer available; export the Chrome passwords to CSV and use Firefox’s migration process. Mozilla also identifies Linux limitations. Because Firefox’s labels and supported sources can change, use the current instructions in Mozilla’s Chrome-to-Firefox guide and Mozilla’s Chrome import guide for the screen you see.
Delete the CSV after verification
After confirming that the destination contains the accounts you need, remove the exported CSV from every location where you stored it, including temporary folders and synchronized storage. The vendor instructions document how to export and import the file but do not establish a universal secure-deletion procedure. Use the normal secure file-removal method required by your organization or operating system, and do not retain an unnecessary copy.

Understand what “settings” can include
“Settings” is a broad label, not a guarantee that the new browser will look exactly like the old one. Chrome lists browsing history, homepage, bookmarks, default search engines, and saved passwords among possible imported data. Firefox lists bookmarks, saved passwords, history, extensions, and form-autofill data as examples. The source browser, destination browser, operating system, and version determine which checkboxes appear.
Data commonly offered by an import wizard
- Bookmarks or favorites: saved page addresses and their folder structure.
- History: previously visited pages when the source and destination support it.
- Saved passwords: credentials only when the browser can read them through a supported direct or CSV route.
- Homepage and search engines: settings that some importers expose as selectable categories.
- Extensions: Firefox lists extensions among possible imported data, but availability depends on the source.
- Form autofill: Firefox lists form-autofill data as an example; do not assume that every browser transfers it.
Settings you may need to recreate
Any category absent from the import dialog must be configured in the destination browser. This can include appearance choices, permissions, notification rules, pinned tabs, custom toolbar layout, and site-specific settings. The official material cited here does not establish a universal list of settings that transfer across all browser combinations, so inspect the destination after import rather than assuming profile parity.

- Check bookmark structure. Open the bookmarks or favorites manager, expand the imported folders, and confirm that several high-value links open correctly.
- Check search and homepage behavior. Open a new tab and a new window to see whether the intended homepage and search engine were imported or need manual setup.
- Check history only if it matters. Search for a few known pages and confirm that the expected date range is present.
- Check critical passwords. Verify accounts you cannot afford to lose, such as email, work systems, financial services, and authentication portals. Do not wait until the old browser has been removed.
- Check extensions and autofill. Firefox’s documentation names these as possible categories; confirm that each required extension is present and that saved form data behaves as expected.
- Test on the correct profile. A browser can have multiple profiles. Make sure the imported data is in the profile you intend to use every day.
- Keep the source temporarily. Do not uninstall the old browser or delete its profile until verification is complete and any needed CSV or HTML files have been handled.
Troubleshoot common failures
The old browser does not appear in the import list
Use the HTML bookmark fallback first. For passwords, consult the destination browser’s current support page to determine whether a CSV route exists. Direct import availability is source-, platform-, and version-dependent, so an absent browser is not evidence that the bookmark data is lost.
Bookmarks imported but are hard to find
Look in the bookmarks library, bookmarks bar, and any folder named Imported or similar. Edge specifically documents an Imported folder on the Favorites bar. Expand nested folders before concluding that links are missing.

Passwords did not come across
Check whether the destination supports password import for your operating system. Firefox’s Chrome guidance says automatic Chrome password import is unavailable on Windows and notes Linux limitations, so use the documented CSV process where applicable. For Edge, use the separate Import passwords now path rather than assuming that a favorites import also includes credentials.

The import created duplicates
Stop repeating the operation. Compare the imported folders with the original, move the needed items into a clean structure, and remove duplicate folders only after checking their contents. Keep the original browser available while cleaning up.
The destination asks for a system password
Firefox may request the system password before reading protected browser data. This is part of the browser’s access flow; use the credential for the current operating-system account, not a website password.
Platform, version, and browser-scope limits
Menu names and supported categories change. The steps above reflect the official Chrome, Firefox, and Edge documentation linked in this article, but a current release can present different labels or fewer categories than an older release. Firefox’s Chrome-password limitation is explicitly platform-sensitive, especially on Windows and Linux. Verify the destination browser’s help page when a category is missing.
