To move your data into Opera Air, open Settings, go to Synchronization, choose Import bookmarks and settings, select the old browser and the data categories, then click Import. Opera documents imports from Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Yandex, or a bookmarks HTML file. If saved passwords do not come across automatically, export them as a CSV from the old browser and use Opera Air’s password-import control at Settings > Advanced > Privacy & security > Autofill > Passwords.
Opera’s product page says Opera Air can import passwords, bookmarks, and browser data so you can start without rebuilding your profile. The sections below explain what is covered, how to verify it, how to use the file-based fallbacks safely, and what to do when entries are missing.
What Opera Air can import
The built-in importer is designed for a one-time migration from another browser into the current Opera Air installation. Opera’s help describes these data categories:

The documented source choices are Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Yandex, and a bookmarks HTML file. Opera Air may show a different set of checkboxes for a particular source. Do not assume that an item absent from the picker was transferred; verify each category you need.

Prepare both browsers before moving data
- Install or open Opera Air and update it through its normal update mechanism before starting.
- Keep the old browser installed and signed in to the profile that contains the data you want.
- Close the old browser before importing. A running browser can keep its profile database locked, preventing Opera Air from reading it.
- If the old browser has multiple profiles, identify the profile containing the correct bookmarks, history, and passwords.
- Decide whether you need only local migration or also want the data available on other Opera browsers through an Opera account.
- For a high-value profile, plan a backup first. Opera identifies
Bookmarks,History, andLogin Data(the file holding saved encrypted passwords) as important profile files.
Importing does not erase the old browser’s profile. Leave it intact until you have checked the new installation and are satisfied that you can sign in to important sites.
Use Opera Air’s automatic importer
- Close the old browser and open Opera Air.
- Open Settings.
- Under Synchronization, select Import bookmarks and settings. If you start from the Bookmarks manager, Opera routes you to the same settings area.
- Choose the source browser: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Yandex, or another source offered by your installation. To import bookmarks from a file instead, choose the bookmarks HTML option.
- Select the data categories shown by Opera Air. Depending on the source and release, these can include bookmarks, browsing history, saved passwords, and cookies.
- Click Import and wait for the operation to finish before closing Opera Air.
- Open the bookmarks manager, History, and Passwords pages to verify the categories you selected.
If Opera Air cannot see the old profile
Close the old browser completely, including any background process that keeps its profile open, and run the importer again. If the source browser offers more than one profile, choose the one that contains your data. A profile stored on another disk may also require a file-based fallback rather than automatic detection.
How the imported data is organized
Opera Air may place imported bookmarks inside a source-named folder instead of merging every item into the existing bookmark bar. Search the bookmarks manager for the source browser’s name and inspect its folders before concluding that bookmarks are missing. For history, search by a known site or date. For passwords, search by the site’s domain rather than by a friendly page title.

Import bookmarks from an HTML file
An HTML bookmark file is useful when the old browser is not installed on the same computer, the profile picker cannot read it, or you want a portable copy of bookmarks only. Export bookmarks from the old browser using its own bookmark-export command, save the resulting HTML file in a location you can identify, and then select the bookmarks HTML source in Import bookmarks and settings. Choose the file when Opera Air prompts you and complete the import.
HTML export normally carries bookmark names, addresses, and folder hierarchy. It does not replace a password export, and it should not be treated as a history or cookie backup. Verify the imported folders and open several important links, including links nested several folders deep.
Import saved passwords with a CSV file
Use the CSV route when automatic password import is unavailable, the source profile is not detected, or the password count after import is lower than expected. Opera documents this path in its Password Manager:

- In the old browser, open its Password Manager and choose Download file or the equivalent CSV-export command.
- Save the CSV temporarily in a private local folder. Do not send it by email, upload it to shared cloud storage, or leave it in a general Downloads folder.
- Open Opera Air and go to Settings > Advanced > Privacy & security > Autofill > Passwords.
- Open the password settings and choose Select file.
- Select the exported CSV and confirm the import.
- Search Passwords for several known sites and test autofill on a site where you are comfortable signing in again.
- Delete the CSV immediately after confirming the import, then empty the operating system’s recycle bin or trash if the file contained real credentials.
Opera warns that a password CSV contains sensitive information. Anyone who obtains the file can read the credentials in it, so treat it as a secret even if the file is stored only briefly. Keep the old browser’s password store until you have verified the new one, but do not retain unnecessary CSV copies.

Why a CSV import may not behave as expected
A CSV is a file format, not an encrypted password vault. Columns exported by one browser may not map perfectly to another, and duplicate entries can appear if you first used automatic import and then imported the same CSV. Check the resulting list for duplicates, confirm the correct username for each important domain, and remove only entries you have verified as redundant. If Opera Air rejects the file, export a fresh CSV from the old browser rather than editing it in a spreadsheet, which can alter delimiters, quoting, or leading characters.

Import first, then enable sync if you need other devices
Import and sync solve different problems. Import copies data from the old browser into this Opera Air installation once. Sync starts after you sign in to an Opera account and propagates supported Opera data to other signed-in Opera browsers.

Opera says sync can include bookmarks, Speed Dial entries, browsing history, passwords, settings, and open tabs, with data merged across signed-in Opera browsers. Review the sync choices before enabling them, especially if another signed-in browser already contains items you do not want merged. Sync does not promise that every type of profile item from the original browser will transfer, and it does not turn a bookmarks HTML file into a complete browser backup.

A backup is useful before an upgrade, recovery operation, or move from an older installation. Opera’s backup list includes:
- Bookmarks — bookmark records and folders.
- History — browsing-history records.
- Login Data — saved passwords stored in encrypted form by the browser.
Copy these files while Opera Air is closed so they are not changing during the copy. Store the backup in a protected location and restrict access to the device account that needs it. A profile-file backup is different from a CSV: Login Data remains an encrypted browser database, while a CSV is readable credential text. Do not replace a protected profile backup with an unencrypted CSV unless you need the CSV specifically for migration.

Troubleshoot missing bookmarks, history, passwords, or cookies
The importer shows no source browser
Close the old browser, reopen Opera Air, and try Settings > Synchronization > Import bookmarks and settings again. Confirm that the old browser is installed locally and that you are using the intended operating-system account. If the profile is on another disk or no longer opens, export bookmarks to HTML and passwords to CSV from a working copy or backup instead.
Bookmarks imported but appear to be missing
Open the bookmarks manager and inspect folders named for the source browser or imported data. Search for a distinctive bookmark title and verify the bookmark-bar and other-bookmarks areas. If the old browser used several profiles, repeat the export or import from the profile that actually contained the bookmarks.
History is incomplete
History availability depends on what the source browser exposes to Opera Air. Check the History page using a known domain and several date ranges. If only bookmarks are essential, use the HTML fallback; it cannot restore history. Keep the old browser profile until you decide whether the missing history is necessary.
Passwords do not appear after import
- Confirm that Saved passwords was selected in the automatic importer, if that checkbox was offered.
- Check that you imported the correct source profile and that the old browser was closed.
- Open Opera Air’s Passwords page and search by domain.
- Export a fresh CSV from the old Password Manager using Download file.
- Import it through Settings > Advanced > Privacy & security > Autofill > Passwords > Select file.
- Verify several usernames and delete the CSV after successful verification.
Cookies or logged-in sessions do not carry over
Cookies are listed as an import category, but the checkbox may not be available for every source or release. Even when cookies import, individual sites may invalidate sessions or require a fresh sign-in. Test the sites you need, and use the password migration rather than relying on a preserved session cookie.
Imported passwords create duplicates
Duplicates commonly result from running automatic import and then importing the same CSV. Compare domains and usernames, retain the current entry you have tested, and remove duplicates only after confirming that the remaining credential works. Keep a protected backup until cleanup is complete.
Verification checklist after migration
- Open the bookmarks manager and locate the expected folders and several high-priority links.
- Search History for known sites from different dates.
- Open Passwords and verify multiple domains, usernames, and duplicate status.
- Test autofill without exposing credentials to anyone else.
- Check any cookie-dependent sites, knowing that a new sign-in may still be required.
- If using sync, sign in on the other Opera browser and confirm that the selected data appears there.
- Retain the old browser and protected profile backup until verification is finished.
- Delete every temporary password CSV and clear the trash or recycle bin.
Once these checks pass, Opera Air can serve as the working browser while the old installation remains only as a fallback. The safest workflow is to use automatic import for broad coverage, switch to HTML or CSV only for categories that failed, and enable account sync only after the local copy is correct.
