There is no documented, reliable IllustratorMagic Pro workflow for importing a native Adobe Illustrator (.ai) file with its editable layer structure intact. IllustratorMagic Pro is presented in its official product material as a browser-based generator for illustrated storybooks, comics, and coloring books, with PDF export. That material does not document an AI-file import command, accepted Illustrator input formats, or a layer-mapping system.
If your layers matter, keep the original .ai file as the authoritative master. You can create a PDF or SVG compatibility copy with Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities enabled, but treat that as a testable fallback—not a promise that IllustratorMagic Pro will expose Illustrator layers, live text, effects, or artboards as editable objects.
What is actually established about IllustratorMagic Pro and .ai files
Adobe Illustrator’s native AI format is the safest working format for Illustrator artwork. Adobe describes native formats as formats that can preserve all Illustrator data, including multiple artboards. That makes the untouched .ai file the only dependable source for recovering your original Illustrator layer hierarchy.

A PDF-compatible AI file can be viewed or imported by some third-party applications, but Adobe cautions that those applications may not provide full Illustrator editing functionality. Seeing artwork in another program is therefore not evidence that the original layers survived.
Why a visible PDF layer is not the same as an Illustrator layer
Illustrator can save an AI document with PDF compatibility. That option places Illustrator data in the file alongside the PDF representation. Software that understands the embedded Illustrator data may be able to reopen more of the original document; software that reads only the PDF portion sees a page description instead.
Ordinary PDF layer information should not be confused with Illustrator’s native layer structure. A PDF can contain optional-content groups or other page-level organization while still lacking the Illustrator-specific editing information needed to restore the original hierarchy, appearances, guides, and object relationships. If Illustrator editing capabilities were not preserved, reopening the PDF in Illustrator or another editor can expose a rendered or substantially reduced representation.

Adobe states that PDF and SVG preserve all Illustrator data only when the relevant Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities option is selected. Even with that option, the destination application decides which data it can interpret. A compatibility setting increases what is available; it does not force a browser service to implement Illustrator’s layer model.

For an IllustratorMagic Pro project, the decisive question is not whether the artwork looks correct after upload. It is whether the service officially accepts the format and exposes the structure you need. Its published product information does not establish either point for .ai, PDF, or SVG layer import.

Prepare a loss-proof Illustrator package
1. Freeze an untouched master
Make a duplicate of the original .ai file before exporting or experimenting. Keep the master in Illustrator format and do not overwrite it with a PDF, SVG, or image. Use a filename that records the document and revision, such as storybook-cover_master_v03.ai. Preserve linked graphics, fonts, and any placed assets alongside it so the document can be reconstructed if a test import fails.
2. Record the layer structure
Before creating a compatibility copy, note the top-level layers, nested sublayers, artboards, clipping masks, live text objects, placed images, transparency, brushes, and effects. A short inventory gives you a concrete test rather than relying on visual similarity. For example, record that the file has four top-level layers, two artboards, one live headline, and a clipping mask around the illustration.
3. Save the editable copy in Illustrator format
- Open the source document in Adobe Illustrator.
- Choose File > Save As or File > Save a Copy.
- Select Adobe Illustrator (
.AI) as the format and save the editable copy. - Reopen that copy in Illustrator and confirm that the Layers panel, artboards, text, and key effects are present.
This step establishes a known-good recovery file. If a downstream service flattens the artwork, you can return to this document instead of trying to rebuild layers from an export.
4. Create a PDF compatibility copy only when necessary
- In Illustrator, use the save or export command that produces a PDF.
- In the Adobe PDF options, select Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities.
- Save the PDF under a new filename; do not replace the .ai master.
- Reopen the PDF in Illustrator and inspect the Layers panel and a few representative objects.
Without the preservation option, the PDF may provide only a rendered or reduced representation when reopened. With it enabled, Illustrator data is retained in the file, but a third-party importer can still ignore that data or provide only limited editing.
5. Create an SVG compatibility copy when the destination requires SVG
- Save or export a separate SVG from the original Illustrator document.
- Enable the SVG dialog’s Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities setting when it is offered.
- Keep the SVG beside the .ai master and label it as a compatibility copy.
- Open the SVG in Illustrator and inspect the objects that matter most, especially text, clipping masks, gradients, and effects.
SVG is a vector interchange format, not a guarantee of Illustrator’s complete document model. The destination may interpret paths and basic shapes while discarding Illustrator-only metadata or converting live objects.

Test IllustratorMagic Pro without risking the original
1. Ask the vendor a format-specific question
Before uploading client artwork or promising layer preservation, ask IllustratorMagic support a narrowly defined question: does the current service accept native .ai, PDF, or SVG uploads as source artwork, and does it preserve separate Illustrator layers as editable elements after import? Ask which subscription or project type supports the feature, the maximum file size, and whether text, artboards, clipping masks, transparency, and effects are retained.

Request a current import-specific help article or a written confirmation that describes the exact interface. The product information currently available documents generation and PDF export, not layered AI import, so a general statement that the service accepts images is not sufficient.
2. Use a disposable test file
Build a small test document rather than uploading the full production file. Give each layer a conspicuous name and color, place one simple vector shape and one live text object on each layer, and include a second artboard if your project uses one. Keep the file free of confidential material.
3. Test one format at a time
- Try the native .ai file only if support explicitly says it is accepted.
- If native AI is not accepted, test the PDF made with Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities.
- Test SVG separately if the service says it accepts SVG.
- Use a rendered PDF or image only for a visual-output test, never as a layer-preservation test.
Do not infer a result from a successful upload alone. A service can accept a file, generate a page, and still have converted every object into one placed image.
4. Inspect the result against your inventory
Check whether the destination exposes separate layers or merely a single imported page. Compare the number and names of layers, the number of artboards or pages, text editability, vector sharpness at high zoom, clipping masks, transparency, gradients, and effects. Move or hide one object at a time if the interface permits it. If all artwork moves as one unit, the result is visually imported but not structurally preserved.

5. Keep the original package with the project
Store the untouched .ai master, the tested compatibility export, the test result, and any vendor response together. If the service later changes its importer, you will have a reproducible baseline and a recovery path.

The upload is rejected
A rejection means the current project or service does not accept that file type, not that the Illustrator document is damaged. Return to the .ai master, ask which formats are supported, and provide a PDF, SVG, or rendered asset only after confirming the destination’s requirements. Do not rename an .ai file with a different extension; that changes neither its contents nor its compatibility.
The file uploads but appears as one flat object
This is the expected behavior of a renderer or image-placement workflow. A flat object preserves the appearance of the page, not Illustrator’s editable layers. If layer editing is a requirement, stop using that imported copy and continue in Illustrator with the native master. Ask support whether the service has a separate layer-aware import mode; do not assume one exists.
The PDF opens, but layers or text are missing
First verify that the PDF was created with Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities. If it was not, regenerate it from the .ai master with the option enabled. If it was enabled and the destination still shows one page or a reduced object set, the importer is likely reading the PDF representation without exposing the embedded Illustrator data. A PDF layer panel in the destination is not proof that Illustrator’s original hierarchy survived.
Some effects or masks look different
Effects, transparency, clipping masks, brushes, and linked artwork are areas where interchange formats and third-party parsers can diverge. Compare the compatibility copy in Illustrator before testing the service, then compare the service result at 100% and at high zoom. If a visual effect is essential, retain a rendered reference and the native .ai source; do not flatten the master merely to make the import look consistent.

Text is no longer editable
Preserving Illustrator data does not obligate a third-party application to expose live text controls. The destination may convert text to paths, rasterize it, substitute a font, or treat the entire page as an image. Keep the original fonts and live-text .ai document, and ask support specifically whether text remains editable in the target project.
Multiple artboards become one page
Adobe identifies multiple-artboard preservation as a benefit of native formats. A PDF or SVG importer may instead treat each artboard as a page, ignore additional artboards, or combine them. Test every artboard you need and verify the resulting page order before using the file in production.
Choose the workflow that matches your real goal
You need ongoing Illustrator editing
Work from the native .ai master in Illustrator. Use IllustratorMagic Pro, if appropriate for your project, only for a separate generation or output step after exporting a copy. Do not make the browser service the sole repository of layered artwork.
You need a compatible vector handoff
Provide a PDF or SVG copy with Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities enabled, plus the native .ai master. Tell the recipient that the preservation data is available but that full editability depends on the receiving application.
You need only the finished appearance
A rendered PDF or image can be the simplest handoff when no one needs to move individual objects, edit text, or recover artboards. Keep the .ai master separately so a future revision does not require tracing or rebuilding the artwork.
You actually need book generation rather than layer import
If your objective is to produce an illustrated storybook, comic, coloring book, or finished PDF, IllustratorMagic Pro’s documented role as a browser-based AI generation service may be relevant. That is a different use case from importing an Illustrator document for layer-by-layer editing. Confirm the service’s current input requirements before adapting production artwork to it.
The practical answer
There is currently no documented method that proves IllustratorMagic Pro will open a native .ai file and preserve its Illustrator layers as editable layers. The defensible workflow is to retain an untouched .ai master, create separate PDF or SVG copies with Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities enabled when compatibility requires them, and validate a disposable test file with the vendor before committing production artwork. If the test result is a single flat object or a rendered page, the layers have not survived and the native Illustrator file remains your only reliable editable source.
