On a U.S. Nutrition Facts label, look for Trans Fat directly below Saturated Fat. Read the number of grams and the serving size beside the panel. Then check the ingredient list for partially hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. A label showing 0 g may still represent a small amount: under U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rounding rules, less than 0.5 gram per serving can be declared as 0 g.
Trans fat has no Percent Daily Value (%DV), so compare gram amounts instead of looking for a percentage. Always adjust for how much you actually eat and use the current package, because serving sizes, recipes and formulations can change.
Where trans fat appears on the label
Find the line under saturated fat
Start in the Nutrition Facts panel, not the front-of-package marketing claims. In the standard U.S. panel, the nutrient sequence places Trans Fat immediately below Saturated Fat. The entry is normally written as “Trans Fat” or “Trans” and is followed by a gram amount, such as 0 g, 0.2 g or 1 g. FDA labeling guidance identifies this line as the place to find the declared amount: FDA’s Small Entity Compliance Guide for trans fatty acids.

Read the number with its serving basis
The number is generally the amount per serving, not necessarily the amount in the whole package. Locate “Serving size” near the top of the panel before interpreting the gram value. A pouch can contain several servings even when it looks like one snack. FDA explains how the serving-size declaration works in its Serving Size on the Nutrition Facts Label guidance.

If you eat two servings, multiply the listed trans-fat grams by two. For example, a panel listing 0.4 g per serving represents 0.8 g when you eat two servings. That multiplication is a calculation based on the package’s stated serving, not a new value printed by the manufacturer.
What “0 g trans fat” really means
The FDA rounding threshold
In the United States, a product containing less than 0.5 gram of trans fat per serving may declare the amount as 0 g. The zero is therefore a rounded label value, not proof that laboratory testing found absolutely none. FDA’s Food Labeling Guide explains this rounding rule, and the agency’s trans-fat compliance guide describes the same threshold.
The distinction matters when you compare foods or consume multiple servings. A product that contains 0.49 g per serving can display 0 g; eating three servings could amount to as much as 1.47 g under that example. The exact quantity for a particular food is not established by a displayed zero alone, so do not treat every 0 g declaration as chemically identical.
Illustrative serving calculations
The following examples show how the printed value and your portion interact. They are arithmetic examples, not measurements of named products.
| Label declaration | Servings eaten | Calculation | Amount represented by the label value |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.2 g per serving | 1 | 0.2 × 1 | 0.2 g |
| 0.2 g per serving | 3 | 0.2 × 3 | 0.6 g |
| 0 g per serving (could be under 0.5 g) | 1 | 0 × 1 on the printed panel | The actual amount could be somewhere below the 0.5 g rounding threshold |
| 0 g per serving (could be under 0.5 g) | 4 | Each serving remains a rounded zero on the panel | The package does not reveal the unrounded total; check ingredients for additional context |
Because the manufacturer is allowed to round each serving declaration, multiplying a printed 0 g does not recover the hidden amount. The table’s fourth row is why the ingredient list is useful when a rounded zero needs interpretation.
Check the ingredient list for partially hydrogenated oil
Words to look for
After reading the Nutrition Facts panel, move to the ingredients statement. Look specifically for “partially hydrogenated oil” or “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.” The FDA Food Labeling Guide says this wording can appear even when the Nutrition Facts panel declares 0 g trans fat because the amount per serving is below the rounding threshold.

Ingredient lists are ordered by weight, but the order does not tell you the exact grams of trans fat. Use the wording as a clue that partially hydrogenated oil (PHO) is present or was used in the formulation, not as a substitute for the panel’s numerical declaration.
Why a zero and PHO can coexist
Suppose a package says “Trans Fat 0 g” and the ingredients include “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.” Those statements are not automatically contradictory under U.S. labeling rules. The panel can round a quantity below 0.5 g per serving to zero, while the ingredient list still names the oil. If you want to avoid products that disclose PHO, the ingredient list is the deciding check rather than the rounded number alone.
Formulations can change, so inspect the package you are buying instead of relying on an old online listing or a previous purchase. The declared nutrient values and ingredients apply to that particular product and package.
How to compare two foods
Use a consistent method whenever you compare crackers, baked goods, frozen meals or other packaged foods. Compare the following four pieces of information together:
| Comparison point | What to read | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Declared trans fat | Grams on the Trans Fat line | Trans fat has no %DV, so grams are the available numerical comparison. |
| Serving size | Grams, pieces, cups or other unit at the top of the panel | A smaller stated serving can make the nutrient number look lower even when you eat a larger portion. |
| Number of servings eaten | Your actual portion divided by the label serving | Eating two or three servings increases the amount consumed proportionally when a nonzero value is declared. |
| Ingredients | Search for partially hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated vegetable oil | This can reveal PHO when a rounded 0 g declaration does not show a small amount. |
Compare like with like where possible. If one product lists a serving as 28 g and another as 40 g, first note the printed values, then calculate the amount for the portion you would actually eat. Do not rank products solely by the size of the number until you have checked their serving bases.

Why there is no trans-fat % Daily Value
The Nutrition Facts format provides a %DV for many nutrients, but trans fat does not have a %DV. FDA’s explanation of the label’s percentages states that consumers should use the gram amount for trans fat rather than expecting a percentage: The Lows and Highs of Percent Daily Value on the Nutrition Facts Label.

Do not interpret a blank percentage as missing data or as a guarantee of zero. The grams line is the declaration. If it reads 0 g, apply the rounding caveat; if it reads a positive number, use that number with the serving size. The absence of %DV does not change the need to read the ingredients.
Why trans fat can still appear in foods
Partially hydrogenated oils and regulatory changes
FDA has identified partially hydrogenated oils as the major source of artificial trans fat in processed foods. The agency determined that PHOs were no longer generally recognized as safe for their intended use and established compliance dates extending through January 1, 2020. FDA’s regulatory history is summarized in Final Determination Regarding Partially Hydrogenated Oils (Removing Trans Fat).
Trans-fat declaration on Nutrition Facts labels began in 2006. Those dates explain why older packages, archived recipes or older articles may describe labels differently from a current package. They do not make an old listing reliable for a product now on a store shelf.

FDA distinguishes artificial trans fat from trans fat that occurs naturally in foods from ruminant animals, including cows and goats. The PHO determination did not eliminate naturally occurring trans fat. A current label can therefore show a small declared amount even when no partially hydrogenated oil appears in the ingredients. The ingredient check is a way to identify PHO; it is not a test for every possible source of trans fat.
Step-by-step label reading routine
- Pick up the current package. Use the label on the product you intend to eat; do not assume another size, flavor or older package has identical values.
- Locate “Serving size.” Record the stated quantity and the number of servings in the container if shown.
- Find “Trans Fat.” Look immediately below “Saturated Fat” in the Nutrition Facts panel.
- Write down the grams. Note whether the value is 0 g or a positive number such as 0.2 g.
- Adjust for your portion. Multiply a declared gram value by the number of servings you eat. If the printed value is 0 g, remember that the underlying amount may be below 0.5 g per serving.
- Read the ingredients. Search for “partially hydrogenated oil” and “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.”
- Compare products using grams and serving size. Do not use a nonexistent trans-fat %DV as a comparison shortcut.
Worked label-reading scenarios
Scenario 1: A positive value on a small serving
A snack label lists a serving size of 10 pieces and Trans Fat 0.3 g. You eat 20 pieces, which is two servings. The declared amount represented by your portion is 0.3 g × 2 = 0.6 g. The ingredient list still deserves a check, but no rounding inference is needed for the printed 0.3 g.
Scenario 2: A rounded zero with no PHO wording
A product lists Trans Fat 0 g per serving and no partially hydrogenated oil in the ingredients. The label supports a declared amount below the 0.5 g threshold per serving, but it does not establish absolute absence. The product may contain naturally occurring trans fat or another amount that is simply below the reporting threshold.

Scenario 3: A rounded zero with PHO wording
A product lists Trans Fat 0 g and includes partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. Under FDA’s rounding rule, the two declarations can coexist. Treat the ingredient wording as a reason not to interpret the printed zero as proof that no PHO-related trans fat is present.
Scenario 4: Two packages with different serving sizes
Package A lists 0.2 g per 20 g serving; Package B lists 0 g per 35 g serving. You cannot conclude that B contains less trans fat in the portion you normally eat without considering the rounding rule and your actual serving. Compare the same gram quantity of food, then use the ingredient lists to interpret any rounded zero.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: looking only at the front of the package
Front claims can summarize or highlight nutrients but do not replace the Nutrition Facts panel and ingredients statement. Turn the package over and follow the seven-step routine above.
Mistake: assuming 0 g means chemically none
Correct the assumption by applying the less-than-0.5-g-per-serving rounding rule. A zero is a reporting value with a defined threshold.
Mistake: forgetting the serving size
Correct it by writing down the serving size before comparing products or calculating your portion. A package that appears to be one serving may contain several.
Mistake: searching for a trans-fat percentage
There is no trans-fat %DV on the FDA label format. Use grams and serving size instead.

Mistake: treating an old label as current
Recipes and regulations have changed over time. Recheck the package currently in your hand, including its ingredients, rather than trusting an archived image or a previous purchase.
Mistake: assuming all trans fat is artificial
FDA notes that some trans fat occurs naturally in foods from animals such as cows and goats. Absence of PHO wording does not prove that every source of trans fat is absent.
U.S. label scope and limits
The instructions in this article describe the U.S. Nutrition Facts system and FDA rules. Other countries may use different nutrient names, rounding conventions or daily-value systems. Within the United States, the Nutrition Facts amount and serving size apply to the specific product and package. A recipe change, a different package size or a reformulated version can produce a different declaration.
