The reliable way to find the skills employers want is to triangulate several kinds of evidence: current job postings for your target role and location, occupation-level data, conversations with practitioners, and your own examples of demonstrated ability. No universal “top skills” list can answer an unspecified career question. The method below produces a short, defensible list of skills to prove, improve, or investigate next.
1. Define the job, level and market you are investigating
Start with a precise target. “Technology” or “health care” is too broad for a useful comparison. Write down a specific occupation or a small cluster of genuinely comparable roles, the seniority you want, and the geographic market in which you will apply.
Choose a role family and seniority
Separate entry-level, intermediate and senior work. A senior role may require planning, leadership, budgeting or stakeholder management that is not expected of a beginner doing similar technical tasks. If you are comparing roles, keep the level consistent so that differences reflect the work rather than responsibility.
Set the geographic scope
Use the city, region or country where you intend to work. Employers in different locations can use different tools, credentials and legal or regulatory knowledge. National statistics are useful context, but they cannot replace evidence from vacancies you could actually pursue.

Write a one-sentence job-market brief
For example: “I am investigating junior data-analyst roles in the Chicago area, in health-care and financial-services employers, during the next six months.” This sentence keeps you from mixing unrelated postings and makes later decisions auditable.
2. Build a sample of current job descriptions
Collect several postings from employers recruiting for comparable work. A single advertisement reflects one manager’s wording and one hiring situation; a pattern across multiple employers is stronger evidence.
How many postings to collect
A practical starting sample is 10 to 20 recent postings. Use fewer only when the occupation or location is unusually small, and record that limitation. Prefer advertisements with a clear employer, location, level and date. Save the text or your notes because postings can be edited or removed.
Record requirements without blending them
Create two columns: required and preferred. Copy the employer’s wording, then normalize obvious synonyms in a separate notes column. “SQL,” “relational-database querying” and “writing queries” may describe related capability, but you should preserve the original terms so you can see what employers actually wrote.
| What to capture | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Named tools and technologies | These may be screening keywords or evidence of a particular workflow. |
| Methods and tasks | They reveal what you would do, not just what software you would open. |
| Credentials, licenses and education | Some are legal or contractual requirements; others are preferences. |
| Work behaviors | Communication, documentation, customer service and collaboration often determine how technical work is delivered. |
| Years or type of experience | “Two years” and “experience leading” signal scope, not merely time served. |
Count recurrence, but do not treat it as a verdict
Mark how many comparable postings mention each capability and whether they call it required or preferred. Recurrence is a useful signal, not proof that a skill is universally important. A small sample can overrepresent one employer, industry or recruiting agency.
Separate a tool from the underlying capability
Record both. A posting may name a particular analytics platform while the durable requirement is data visualization, quality checking or communicating findings. Tools can change; the underlying task may persist. This distinction helps you decide whether to learn the exact product, a transferable method, or both.
3. Compare postings with occupation-level evidence
Job ads show current employer language. Official occupation data provides a structured comparison across occupations, but it is not a real-time census of every vacancy.

What the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics framework measures
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Skills Data uses O*NET as its foundation and scores 17 skills for occupations covered by its employment projections. Its categories include adaptability; computers and information technology; creativity and innovation; critical and analytical thinking; customer service; detail orientation; interpersonal skills; leadership; mathematics; problem solving and decision making; project management; and writing and reading, among others. Use the tables to compare detailed occupations, major groups, fastest-growing occupations and typical education.
The framework helps you ask, “How does this occupation differ from a nearby one?” It should not replace local vacancy evidence or tell you that one skill guarantees employment.
Read rankings in their proper context
In BLS’s 2025–35 projection table, adaptability, detail orientation and interpersonal skill rank as the top three skills for all occupations. That is an occupational ranking tied to the projection framework, not a count of current requests in your local job ads. Rankings can change sharply by occupation: for data scientists, the table lists mathematics, computers and information technology, and writing and reading as the leading skills.
Use a comparison worksheet
| Question | Posting evidence | Occupation-level check |
|---|---|---|
| What work is performed? | Repeated tasks and deliverables | Does the official occupation description fit? |
| Which capabilities recur? | Frequency and required/preferred label | How does the occupation score across the 17 BLS skills? |
| What preparation is typical? | Credentials and experience in ads | Typical education and projection information |
| What varies by employer? | Tools, sector terms and processes | Common occupation-level capabilities versus local specialization |
4. Check local and industry demand
After identifying broad patterns, test whether they apply where you plan to work. Indeed’s Skills Map compares skills across industries and U.S. states using skills extracted from job postings. Indeed says its taxonomy covers more than 3,000 skills across 48 categories and 108 subcategories, and that the taxonomy changes as skills and extraction methods evolve.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Use that tool as a comparison aid: inspect differences between states or industries, then return to actual vacancies. Its own guidance cautions that demand shifts by location and that the map does not choose a career pathway for you. Posting counts are signals, not measures of proficiency or a promise of hiring.
Interpret cross-industry overlap carefully
Some capabilities appear in many occupations because organizations share processes. In a June 30, 2026 announcement about U.S. job postings, Indeed wrote: “Business Operations skills appear in nearly three-quarters of postings, across jobs ranging from project managers to pediatricians to plumbers.” This illustrates overlap, not a claim that every worker needs an identical business-operations skill set. Read the underlying tasks and level before adding a broad category to your personal plan.
Account for UK-specific evidence separately
Skills England’s Annual Skills Report 2026 says more than a quarter of UK vacancies are reported by employers as hard to fill because of skills shortages. It also projects that demand for key occupations in the report’s industrial-strategy priority sectors will increase by nearly a quarter over the next decade. Both figures are UK-specific and limited to the report’s definitions; they are not forecasts for every country, occupation or industry.

Skills England also notes that available labor-market data has limited local and occupational detail. That limitation is a reason to combine broad statistics with local postings and practitioner conversations, not to discard the statistics.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. Ask people who perform the work
Job descriptions often omit how a capability is used day to day. Speak with people currently doing the role: colleagues, alumni, professional-community contacts, or a hiring manager willing to explain the work. The National Careers Service recommends talking to people about their jobs for this reason.
Questions that reveal real expectations
- Which skills do you use every week, and what does competent performance look like?
- Which requirement is hardest for new entrants to learn?
- Which skills were taught after hiring rather than expected on day one?
- Which tools are mandatory, and which can be substituted?
- What evidence convinces you that an applicant can do the work?
- What do job advertisements regularly exaggerate or leave out?
Ask more than one person and note their industry, level and location. One practitioner’s workflow may be highly specialized.
6. Inventory skills you can already demonstrate
Map your experience before choosing training. The National Careers Service advises reflecting on work, education and daily-life experience, listing strengths and improvement areas, and asking people who know you well for another perspective.
Classify evidence, not just labels
For every candidate skill, record an example, your level of responsibility and an observable result. “Communication” is too vague by itself; “wrote a customer procedure used by a five-person team, reducing repeated questions” is evidence that can be discussed in an application or interview. Use truthful outcomes and state when a result is approximate.
| Skill | Evidence to record | Current confidence | Next proof |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capability or tool | Project, task, course, volunteer activity or life experience | Can perform alone, with guidance, or only explain | Small project, supervised task or assessment |
| Work behavior | Situation, action and outcome | Frequency and complexity handled | Feedback from a practitioner or manager |
| Credential or regulated practice | Issuing body, date and scope | Current, expired or not held | Verify the employer’s exact requirement |
Use a simple evidence test
- Explain it: Can you describe the concept and when to use it?
- Do it: Can you complete a realistic task without step-by-step help?
- Show it: Can you provide a work sample, portfolio item, credential or reference?
- Transfer it: Can you adapt the capability when the tool, customer or constraint changes?
This prevents a course completion badge from being mistaken for job-ready performance.
7. Turn the evidence into a prioritized skills list
Do not finish with a long inventory. Select a short list and explain why each item earned a place. A useful prioritization considers recurrence in target postings, whether employers call the skill required, relevance to your exact role and location, your current evidence, and the effort needed to produce credible proof.

| Priority | Use it when | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate | It recurs in comparable postings, is required, and you have little evidence | Choose a focused practice or supervised project and set a near-term proof date. |
| Strengthen | You can perform it but examples are weak, old or too narrow | Improve the work sample, obtain feedback and document a measurable outcome. |
| Validate | It appears in one or two ads or is a new tool with uncertain local demand | Ask practitioners and inspect more local postings before paying for training. |
| Defer | It is merely preferred, uncommon in your market, or unrelated to your target level | Keep it in notes, but do not displace a higher-evidence gap. |
Keep “required” and “preferred” visible in your notes. A frequently preferred skill can be a useful differentiator, but it should not automatically outrank a recurring requirement.
8. Choose a development route that fits the gap
Match the learning method to the skill and the evidence employers seek. Possible routes include a course, apprenticeship, on-the-job learning, volunteering or self-directed practice. Skills England says employers want training that is relevant, up to date and aligned with workforce needs.
When a course is appropriate
Choose a course when you need structured instruction, assessment or access to equipment that you cannot obtain alone. Check its syllabus against your target postings, the date materials were updated, the amount of practical work, feedback arrangements and recognition in your market. There is no source-backed universal best course or credential for an unspecified field.
When practice or a project is better
For a tool, method or portfolio-based occupation, a realistic project may produce stronger evidence than passive study. Recreate a task from a posting using lawful, non-confidential data; document assumptions, decisions, quality checks and the result. Have a practitioner review it when possible.
When an apprenticeship, volunteer role or internal assignment fits
Use these routes when the skill depends on teamwork, customer contact, safety, regulated process or workplace judgment. The value is the supervised context and feedback, not merely the title of the program.
Check the business case before paying
- Does the skill recur in the roles and location you selected?
- Will the route create evidence you can show or explain?
- Is the content current for the tools and methods in the postings?
- What prerequisite knowledge, time and support does it require?
- Can a lower-cost project, workplace task or volunteer assignment answer the same gap?
Never treat enrollment or certification as a hiring guarantee. The relevant test is whether the training improves your ability to perform and demonstrate work employers actually need.

A compact evidence format
- Situation: identify the customer, project or constraint.
- Action: describe what you personally did and which method or tool you used.
- Result: state the observable outcome, quality improvement, time saved, decision enabled or feedback received.
- Reflection: explain what you would change and how the experience transfers to the target role.
Use the same evidence map to prepare interview answers. If you have only theoretical knowledge, say so and explain the project or supervised task you are undertaking; credibility is stronger than an inflated proficiency claim.
10. Recheck the list as the market changes
Treat your output as a dated snapshot. Revisit it when you change location, target level, industry or occupation, and periodically while searching. New postings may introduce tools, regulations or workflows; Indeed says its skills taxonomy evolves as skills and extraction methods change. Skills England’s warning about limited local and occupational detail also means that no dashboard can replace fresh, role-specific checking.
What to update
- Replace expired postings with current comparable advertisements.
- Recount recurring terms and separate newly preferred tools from genuine requirements.
- Check whether your target employers changed location, sector or seniority.
- Add new work samples, feedback and outcomes to your evidence inventory.
- Drop skills that no longer serve the role, rather than expanding the list indefinitely.
