Look first for a long, flattened bill. An intact swordfish also has a stout, rounded body, large eyes, a broad crescent-shaped tail, dark coloration on top, and no scales or teeth as an adult. Those features can support a provisional identification, but a beach location or a large body cannot prove the species. The Atlantic billfish key used by NOAA adds two especially useful checks: the shape of the upper bill and the number of caudal keels at the tail base.
Work from the whole fish when possible, photograph the head, bill, tail base and fins without handling the carcass, and record the beach or nearest town. If the bill, tail base or fins are missing, report the find as an unidentified large fish rather than forcing a species-level answer. NOAA’s Atlantic comparison chart is geographically limited, so local fisheries or wildlife authorities remain the appropriate source for a location-specific assessment.
Begin with the features that actually identify a swordfish
A swordfish is not identified simply because it is big, has washed ashore or appears to have a pointed nose. The strongest visual clue is the bill: in an intact adult it is long, flattened and sword-like. NOAA’s North Pacific Swordfish profile describes swordfish as having “long, flattened bills, which resemble swords.” The profile also describes a stout, rounded body, large eyes, a broad crescent-shaped tail and coloration that is darkest on top.
Use several features together. A pointed object at the front of a carcass could be a damaged snout, a different billfish or even a remnant of another structure. A long, flat upper bill is much more informative when it is seen with the body and tail features described below.

Long, flattened upper bill
Inspect the bill from above and from the side. Swordfish have a conspicuously broad, flattened upper bill rather than a slender, round cross-section. Damage, decomposition or scavenging can make the tip look shorter or irregular, so photograph the base of the bill where it joins the head as well as the tip.
Rounded body and large eyes
The body is described as stout and rounded, and the eyes are large. These clues are supporting evidence, not a substitute for the bill and tail-base examination. A partial fish may retain one of them while losing the other.
Crescent tail and dark upper coloration
NOAA describes a broad, crescent-shaped tail and coloration darkest on top. Look at the tail profile and the contrast between the upper surface and the sides, but treat color cautiously: wet sand, drying skin, blood, decomposition and lighting can change what a photograph shows.

No adult scales or teeth
Adult swordfish lack scales and teeth. This is useful when the mouth and skin are intact, but it is easy to misread a damaged or decomposed carcass. Do not use the absence of visible teeth alone to identify a fish; first establish that the mouth area is preserved well enough to inspect.
Use NOAA’s Atlantic billfish comparison in the correct order
NOAA’s “Identification of Atlantic Swordfish and Billfishes” chart, dated April 2019, is a comparison key for Atlantic swordfish and the other billfish shown on that chart. It is not a universal guide to every large fish that can wash onto a beach, and it should not be applied to an unknown fish without considering geography.

- Confirm that the upper bill is visible. Compare its cross-section and outline. The chart shows a swordfish with a flat upper bill; the other billfish shown have a round upper bill.
- Inspect the tail base for caudal keels. The chart shows a swordfish with one caudal keel and the other billfish with double caudal keels. A caudal keel is the ridge or ridges at the tail base used by the chart; count only what is actually visible.
- Use dorsal and anal fins as follow-up checks. The chart then distinguishes the other species by fin shape and position. Do not invent a fin-based identification from a damaged fin or from a species that is not represented in the chart.
- Check the geographic fit. If the beach is outside the Atlantic context of the chart, treat the result as a limited comparison rather than a final identification.
| Feature in NOAA’s Atlantic chart | Swordfish shown by the chart | Other billfish shown by the chart | How to use it on a carcass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upper bill | Flat | Round | Photograph the bill from above and from the side; do not judge a broken tip alone. |
| Caudal keels at tail base | Single keel | Double keels | Inspect the tail base only when that area is intact and visible. |
| Dorsal and anal fins | Used as part of the chart’s identification sequence | Shape and position separate the species shown | Use the chart’s illustrations rather than relying on a generic “large fin” description. |
| Geographic scope | Atlantic swordfish and billfish comparison; not a universal key for every beach-found fish. | ||
Why size helps with context but cannot identify the species
Large size can make a swordfish plausible, but it cannot distinguish swordfish from other large fish. NOAA’s North Pacific profile reports an average length of 7 feet and an average weight of 50 to 200 pounds. The same profile says swordfish can reach 14 feet and nearly 1,200 pounds. These are profile figures, not a field test and not a measurement of a particular carcass.
| NOAA figure | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| 7 feet average length | An average reported on NOAA’s North Pacific Swordfish profile; the source page does not state a year for the figure. | A 7-foot fish is not automatically a swordfish. |
| 50–200 pounds average weight | The reported average weight range on that profile; the source page does not state a year. | Weight estimates from a beach carcass cannot establish species. |
| Up to 14 feet and nearly 1,200 pounds | The maximum size described on the profile. | A fish outside that range should not be identified or rejected by size alone. |
Length estimates are especially unreliable when a fish is curved, partly buried or missing its tail. Weight estimates are even less dependable without equipment and an intact body. Measure only if it can be done without approaching or moving the carcass; a photograph with a known-size object placed at a safe distance can provide scale, but it still does not replace anatomical evidence.

The following workflow is a practical way to preserve useful evidence. It is general field advice, not a substitute for instructions from a local authority.
- Keep your distance first. Do not handle an unknown carcass, and do not reach toward a sharp bill. Keep children and pets away. Decomposition can make a fish unstable, and the condition of the carcass may not be obvious from a distance.
- Record the location. Note the beach name or nearest town and the country or state. A location is essential because the Atlantic comparison chart cannot establish which species are locally likely, and reporting contacts differ by place.
- Photograph the entire fish. Take an image from the side and another from above if you can do so without stepping into an unsafe area. Include enough surroundings to show orientation and approximate scale.
- Photograph the head and bill. Capture the bill’s top and side profiles, its base where it joins the head, and the mouth area. Do not pull on tissue or turn the head.
- Photograph the tail base. The caudal-keel comparison requires the tail base, not merely the tail lobes. If sand, surf or damage hides the area, record it as not visible rather than guessing.
- Photograph the fins. Include the dorsal and anal fins and their positions along the body. The Atlantic chart uses these features after the bill and keel checks.
- Write down what is missing. State whether the bill, tail base, fins, eyes, mouth and skin are intact. A clear description of missing evidence prevents an assessor from treating an uncertain view as a positive identification.
- Ask a local fisheries or wildlife authority for an assessment. Send the location and original photographs through the reporting channel used in that jurisdiction. The available NOAA material does not provide one universal beach-reporting contact, so the correct agency depends on where the fish was found.
How to judge confidence when the carcass is incomplete
Identification confidence should track the features that are actually visible. An intact fish with a clearly flat upper bill, a visible single caudal keel and compatible fin features gives a much stronger basis for a provisional swordfish identification than a fragment with only a pointed snout.
High-information find
The head, bill, tail base and fins are visible, and photographs show the relevant structures clearly. Use the NOAA chart if the find is within its Atlantic scope. Even then, describe the result as a provisional visual identification until a qualified local reviewer confirms it.

Partial head or damaged bill
A broken bill cannot reliably show whether the original bill was flat or round. Record the damage and use other visible features only as supporting context. Do not convert “long point” into “swordfish.”
Missing tail base
Without the tail base, the single-versus-double-keel check cannot be completed. If the bill is also damaged, species-level identification may not be possible from the remaining material.
Fin-only or body-only fragment
A detached fin or a section of body generally lacks the combination of clues used by the chart. Label it as an unidentified large-fish fragment and provide location photographs rather than naming a species.
Distinguishing swordfish from other large fish
“Large fish” is a broad description, not a taxonomic group. A beach can contain species that do not appear in NOAA’s Atlantic billfish comparison at all. The chart helps separate swordfish from the billfish it depicts; it does not identify every large fish with a long snout, every fish with a crescent tail or every carcass found outside the Atlantic context.
Start by deciding whether the specimen is sufficiently intact to compare with the chart. If it is, prioritize the flat-versus-round upper bill and the single-versus-double caudal-keel distinction. If those structures do not fit, stop treating the chart as decisive. A mismatch does not automatically identify another species; it only shows that the swordfish comparison has not been established.

Do not use beach setting, unusual color, apparent aggression, smell or the fact that the fish was found alone as diagnostic traits. The available NOAA material does not establish why a particular fish came ashore, which species are locally common on a given beach or what environmental event may have preceded the find.
Geography changes how much the identification means
NOAA’s North Pacific Swordfish profile supplies the size and general swordfish features cited above. NOAA’s April 2019 comparison chart is specifically an Atlantic swordfish-and-billfish key. Those two resources serve different purposes and should not be blended into a claim that one universal key works everywhere.
For a beach outside the Atlantic scope of the chart, use the photographs and location to seek a regional fisheries, marine-science or wildlife assessment. For an Atlantic beach, the chart can provide a structured first comparison, but local confirmation is still sensible when the carcass is damaged or the species shown in the chart do not clearly match.
Location also matters for reporting. The NOAA material on Atlantic highly migratory species provides management context and compliance resources, but it does not supply a single reporting procedure for every beach. Fishery rules can change, and the identification chart is not fishing-compliance advice.
Common identification mistakes and their fixes
- Mistake: identifying by length alone. Fix: Use size only as context, then examine bill, tail base and fins.
- Mistake: treating any pointed snout as a sword. Fix: Check whether the upper bill is visibly flat, and photograph its base.
- Mistake: counting tail lobes instead of caudal keels. Fix: Inspect the tail base where the chart’s keel distinction is located.
- Mistake: applying the Atlantic chart worldwide. Fix: Record geography and state the chart’s Atlantic limitation.
- Mistake: naming a species from a fragment. Fix: List which decisive features are missing and request local expertise.
- Mistake: relying on a single dramatic photograph. Fix: Provide whole-fish, head, bill, tail-base and fin views.
- Mistake: handling the carcass to improve a photograph. Fix: Keep people and pets away and photograph from a safe position.
Three practical examples
Example 1: An intact Atlantic carcass
The fish has a long, flat-looking bill, a stout body, visible eyes, a crescent tail and an intact tail base. Photographs show one caudal keel, and the fins can be compared with the NOAA chart. The appropriate wording is “provisional swordfish identification based on the Atlantic billfish key,” followed by the beach location and photographs sent to a local authority.

Example 2: A large fish with a broken snout
The body is several feet long, but the front is damaged and the tail base is buried. Size and a pointed remnant are insufficient. Record the fish as an unidentified large fish, document the missing structures and avoid claiming swordfish.
Example 3: A non-Atlantic beach
The fish appears to have a flattened bill, but the only available comparison chart is the Atlantic key. The observation can be reported as “a large fish with a flattened bill, possibly swordfish,” not as a confirmed species. Regional expertise is needed to determine whether the Atlantic comparison applies.
What to include in a report or request for help
A useful message is concise but complete. Include:
- Beach name, nearest town and country or state.
- Date of observation, if known.
- Whole-fish photographs and close views of the head, bill, tail base and fins.
- Approximate length, clearly labeled as an estimate.
- Whether the carcass was intact, damaged, partly buried or missing parts.
- Your uncertainty: for example, “upper bill appears flat, but tail base is not visible.”
Do not move the fish to obtain a better angle. If an authority needs additional views, follow its instructions rather than improvising around a sharp or decomposing carcass.

NOAA Fisheries’ North Pacific Swordfish profile supports the bill, body, eye, tail, coloration, scale-and-tooth and size descriptions. NOAA Fisheries’ “Identification of Atlantic Swordfish and Billfishes,” dated April 2019, supports the flat-versus-round upper-bill comparison, the single-versus-double caudal-keel comparison and the use of dorsal and anal fin shape and position. NOAA’s Atlantic Highly Migratory Species materials provide management context and identify compliance guides as additional resources.
These references are most useful when the fish is intact enough to show the structures they discuss. They do not establish a universal list of species found on every beach, explain why a particular fish stranded, provide one reporting contact for all locations or make a damaged fragment identifiable. Those questions require local information and, when necessary, an expert examination.
