Three currently recognized giant waterlilies belong to the genus Victoria: Victoria amazonica, Victoria cruziana and Victoria boliviana. The quickest useful distinction is the leaf rim: it may be absent or low in V. amazonica, tall and thick in V. cruziana, and intermediate with a strong basal curve in V. boliviana. Leaf-underside color and flowers help confirm the impression, but leaf diameter alone cannot identify a species.
The three-species framework reflects Kew taxonomic accounts and a 2022 study that combined historical records, herbarium material, morphology and DNA evidence. A photograph can suggest a species, but a confident determination may require floral and microscopic characters.
What counts as a giant waterlily?
Giant waterlilies are the three Victoria species known for enormous, circular floating leaves with raised margins. Their leaves have a strongly ribbed underside and spines, while the upper surface is waxy or otherwise water-repellent. These traits establish that you are looking at Victoria, but they do not by themselves separate the species. See Kew’s overview of giant waterlily (Victoria amazonica) for the genus-level appearance.
Use the identification sequence below rather than trying to match one dramatic feature. Rim shape is normally the best first comparison, followed by underside and rib color, then buds and flowers. Growth conditions, leaf age and the viewing angle can change how a rim appears, so several characters should agree before you label a plant.

The three recognized species
| Species | Most useful visual lead | Leaf-rim profile | Color clues | Flower or bud clue |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Victoria amazonica | Rim may be missing or low | Absent in some leaves; when present, usually low and fairly upright | Underside commonly purplish-red and ribbed | Innermost tepals are dark maroon in bud and during the first night of opening |
| Victoria cruziana | Very prominent raised rim | Thick, high and upturned; reported up to 20 cm high | Upper leaf bright green; underside can be reddish | Inner tepals are white on the first night, with later flower-color change |
| Victoria boliviana | Intermediate rim with a basal fold | Moderate, about 4–7% of leaf length in Kew’s account; curves strongly over the blade near the base | Underside may be dark green, maroon or dark blue; ribs can be yellow or green | Shares some flower traits with V. cruziana; bud apex and other floral structures are important |
Descriptions and measurements in the table come from Kew’s accounts for V. amazonica, V. cruziana and V. boliviana. “Typical” appearance is not a guarantee: individual leaves can fall outside a simplified description.
Step-by-step identification sequence
1. Confirm the genus before comparing species
- Look for a very large, nearly circular floating blade.
- Check for an upturned margin or rim around the blade. It can be subtle on young or damaged leaves.
- If the leaf is visible from below, look for strong radial ribs and spines.
These are genus-level cues. Do not call a plant V. amazonica simply because its leaf is large, or V. cruziana because its rim is visible in one photograph.
2. Examine the rim in profile
View the leaf from the side or from water level if possible. A flat overhead photograph hides the feature that is most useful for comparison.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Low or absent rim: This favors V. amazonica. Leaves of this species may lack a conspicuous upturned rim; when a rim is present, it is generally low and relatively upright.
- High, thick rim: This favors V. cruziana. Kew describes a thick upturned rim that can reach 20 cm.
- Intermediate rim with a basal curve: This favors V. boliviana. The rim is moderate in height and curves strongly over the blade close to the base, rather than remaining uniformly upright.
The rim can change as a leaf expands. Treat this step as a lead that must be checked against color and flowers, not as an infallible single-character key.
3. Record the upper surface, underside and ribs
Write down what you see instead of relying on a memory-based color match. Note whether the upper surface is bright or dark green, whether the underside is red, purple, blue-green or maroon, and whether the ribs contrast in yellow or green.
- V. amazonica commonly has a purplish-red, ribbed underside.
- V. cruziana is described as bright green, with an underside that may be reddish.
- V. boliviana can have a dark green, maroon or dark-blue underside, with yellow or green ribs.
Lighting, reflected water, age and the camera’s white balance can all alter these colors. Overlap among descriptions means color should support a rim-based identification, never replace it.

4. Inspect buds and flowers at the correct time
Giant waterlily flowers change as they open, so record the night or stage when you make an observation. If you only see a fully open flower on a later night, you may miss the most useful contrast.
- V. amazonica: The innermost tepals are dark maroon in the bud and during the first night of anthesis (flower opening).
- V. cruziana: The inner tepals are white on the first night; flower color changes later.
- V. boliviana: Some flower traits resemble V. cruziana, so the bud apex and additional floral structures are more informative than a casual color comparison.
Take one photograph of the whole flower, one of the bud or inner tepals, and a note about when the image was taken. The 2022 species-delimitation study identifies bud-apex form, the stigmatic chamber and other floral characters as diagnostic evidence, but several of these features are difficult to see without a specimen or expert examination.
5. Use size only as supporting context
Do not use the diameter of a single leaf as a species threshold. Leaf size changes with plant age, cultivation, nutrition, water conditions and measurement method, and the published ranges overlap.
Kew reports a 3.2 m leaf for V. boliviana at La Rinconada Gardens in Bolivia. That is a documented maximum record, not a typical size and not proof that every leaf over a particular diameter is V. boliviana. Kew’s account for V. cruziana describes blades up to 2 m wide, while the available descriptions for all three species indicate very large leaves. Treat these figures as scale references only.
How the species differ in practical field views
Victoria amazonica: the low-rim or rimless possibility
Start with the possibility that the rim may not be obvious. A mature-looking leaf with a low, mostly upright edge and a purplish-red ribbed underside is consistent with V. amazonica. The flower provides a stronger supporting clue when available: dark maroon inner tepals in the bud and on the first night distinguish it from the white first-night inner tepals described for V. cruziana.

Do not infer this species from a red underside alone. Red or purple tones can be intensified by backlighting, water reflection or the age of the underside, and other species can show reddish or maroon coloration.

Victoria cruziana: the tall, thick rim
A conspicuously raised, thick rim is the quickest visual lead for V. cruziana. In Kew’s account, the rim can be up to 20 cm high and the bright-green blade can reach 2 m across. Photograph the rim in side profile and include a scale object only if it can be done without touching or damaging the plant.
The underside may be reddish, so a red underside does not overturn a strong high-rim observation. If a flower is present, first-night white inner tepals support this identification, but later flower stages are less decisive because color changes.
Victoria boliviana: the intermediate, strongly curved rim
V. boliviana often sits between the other two species in a quick visual comparison. Its rim is moderate—Kew describes approximately 4–7% of leaf length—and the rim curves strongly over the blade near the base. The underside may appear dark green, maroon or dark blue, with yellow or green ribs.
Its recorded size can be exceptional: Kew documents a 3.2 m leaf at La Rinconada Gardens. That record demonstrates the plant’s potential, not a field rule. Pair a large leaf with the basal rim curve and underside characters; never use the record as a stand-alone identification.
Why leaf diameter is a poor deciding character
Large leaves attract attention and are easy to measure, but they are affected by more variables than the rim or a distinctive bud character. A young leaf that has not finished expanding can be much smaller than an older leaf of the same species. Cultivation conditions can also alter growth, and a photograph may not show the leaf’s full edge.
Use diameter to describe the specimen (“about 1.5 m across”) or to provide context for a record, then return to structural characters. A claim such as “over 2 m means V. boliviana” is not supported by the overlapping descriptions.

Photographing a plant for identification
Good documentation makes a tentative identification more useful and allows another botanist to check your reasoning.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Capture the whole plant: Include the complete blade, surrounding water and several leaves if present.
- Show the rim in profile: Take a low-angle image that reveals height, thickness and whether the edge curves over the blade near the base.
- Photograph both surfaces: If permitted at the garden or collection, photograph the upper leaf and the underside without turning or handling the plant in a way that could cause damage.
- Document ribs and spines: Make a close image of a small underside area so rib color and spine arrangement are visible.
- Record flowers over time: Note the date, approximate opening stage and whether the image is from the first or a later night.
- Add scale carefully: Use a fixed feature or a ruler placed beside the plant only where collection staff allow it. Never stand on, lean over or touch a display leaf to obtain a measurement.
Keep the original files and notes. Cropped social-media images often remove the rim, underside or time information needed to evaluate the identification.
Characters that require expert or specimen-level work
The 2022 revision, “Revised Species Delimitation in the Giant Water Lily Genus Victoria”, used multiple morphological and molecular lines of evidence. It discusses characters such as the shape of the stigmatic chamber, floral prickles, carpellary appendages and seed traits in addition to the conspicuous leaf and flower features.
Those characters may not be visible in a casual garden photograph, and collecting material may be restricted. If the identification matters for a herbarium record, conservation work, publication or a collection label, send photographs and location information to a qualified botanist or the institution responsible for the plant. A visual guess should be labeled as tentative rather than presented as a confirmed determination.

Calling every giant waterlily V. amazonica
V. amazonica has long been familiar in public displays, so its name is sometimes used casually for any giant Victoria. Check the rim and underside before using it as the species name.
Treating the tallest rim as proof of species
A high rim strongly suggests V. cruziana, but a single view can exaggerate height. Confirm that the rim is genuinely thick and raised around the leaf, rather than a fold, damaged edge or perspective effect.

Using one color swatch
Purplish, maroon and reddish tones overlap, and photographs vary with lighting. Record the underside color together with rib color and rim form.
Comparing leaves from different growth stages
Young, expanding and mature leaves do not have identical profiles. If possible, compare several leaves from the same plant and prioritize the most developed, undamaged leaf.
Assuming an old name represents a fourth species
Current references recognize three species: V. amazonica, V. cruziana and V. boliviana. Historical labels and older literature can use different names or concepts, but they should not automatically be counted as additional current species. The recognition of V. boliviana followed examination of historical records, herbarium specimens, morphology and DNA evidence.

A compact field checklist
- Is the plant clearly a giant Victoria rather than another floating waterlily?
- Is the leaf rim absent, low and upright, high and thick, or intermediate with a basal curve?
- What are the upper-leaf, underside and rib colors under neutral light?
- Are there spines and strongly radial underside ribs visible?
- If a flower is present, what color are the inner tepals on the first night?
- What is the bud-apex shape, if it can be seen?
- Is the recorded leaf size being used only as context rather than as a threshold?
- Do several characters agree, or is the label based on one photograph?
A practical preliminary result might read: “Victoria sp., probably V. boliviana based on an intermediate rim with a basal curve and dark underside; flower characters not observed.” That wording preserves useful evidence without overstating certainty.
When a confident species name is possible
You can often make a reasonable garden or field comparison when the rim is visible, the underside can be inspected and a first-night flower is documented. Confidence is lower when the plant is seen only from above, the leaf is young or damaged, or the image has strong color cast.
For a confirmed determination, combine several visible characters and consult the taxonomic literature or an expert. The three species are separated by a suite of traits, not by a single measurement. That is why the safest workflow is to report the observations first, give a provisional species, and explain which evidence remains unavailable.
