Acrobat can show you which fonts a PDF uses, but Adobe’s current help pages do not document a way to save an embedded font as a separate TTF or OTF file. To identify a font, open the PDF and go to Document Properties > Fonts. If you need the typeface for another project, locate it from its publisher or another properly licensed source.
How to see which fonts a PDF uses in Acrobat
- Open the PDF in Acrobat.
- In Windows, select Menu > Document Properties > Fonts. On macOS, select File > Document Properties > Fonts.
- Read the font list and note each name exactly as displayed, including capitalization and hyphenation. Adobe’s instructions describe this panel as a way to find font names; they do not say it exports font files. See Adobe’s font-identification instructions, last updated September 23, 2025.
Why the font list does not extract a font file
A font name in Document Properties identifies a typeface used by the PDF; it does not mean Acrobat has saved the underlying font software as a standalone file. Adobe’s current help pages cover identification, embedding, optimization, and print export, but do not document an Acrobat workflow to export embedded font data as TTF, OTF, or another font file.
Also, the PDF may contain only a subset of a font: embedded data can include just the characters used in that document. That subset may not contain the full character set needed for other work. Adobe explains this and the vendor-controlled embedding setting in its guide to font embedding and substitution in PDFs, last updated September 23, 2025.
What Acrobat’s related font options actually do
| Goal | Acrobat action | What it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identify a font | Document Properties > Fonts | Shows font names used by the PDF. | Does not export font files. Adobe, updated September 23, 2025. |
| Reduce PDF size | Acrobat Pro PDF Optimizer > Fonts | Can unembed fonts and save an optimized PDF. | Unembedding removes font data from the PDF; it is not documented as saving that data separately. Adobe, updated September 23, 2025. |
| Prepare a print workflow | Export to PostScript or EPS and choose font-inclusion settings | Controls fonts included in PostScript/EPS output. | Adobe describes this as conversion for printing and prepress, not standalone font extraction. Adobe, updated November 21, 2025. |
| Use the typeface in a new project | Find the original font through its publisher or a properly licensed source | Provides a route to obtain the font for reuse. | Check the applicable license; the PDF may contain only a subset. Adobe, updated September 23, 2025. |
Unembedding removes fonts from the PDF
Acrobat Pro’s PDF Optimizer includes font unembedding settings intended to reduce PDF file size. The result is an optimized PDF with embedded font data removed—not a standalone font file. Follow Adobe’s instructions for reducing PDF size by unembedding fonts only if reducing the document’s size is your goal.

PostScript and EPS export are print conversions
Acrobat’s PostScript/EPS conversion has font-inclusion controls for print and prepress output. Exporting in these formats is not a documented method for extracting a font file. See Adobe’s PDF-to-PostScript instructions.
Check embedding and licensing before reuse
Embedding is governed by a setting from the font vendor. Adobe says a font can be embedded only when the vendor’s setting permits it. That permission relates to embedding in a PDF; it does not establish your right to extract, install, distribute, or reuse the font software. Check the font’s license and obtain the original from its rights holder if you need it for another project.

If a font cannot be embedded and the person opening the PDF does not have the original, Acrobat or Distiller may substitute another font. Adobe warns that the replacement may not match the original character shapes, and substitution may not work cleanly for some languages or encodings. Its overview of language support in PDFs was last updated November 26, 2025.

Adobe’s current help pages reviewed here do not document a feature that exports embedded font data as a standalone file. They do document font identification, unembedding for PDF optimization, and font inclusion settings for PostScript/EPS output. Those pages do not establish that no Acrobat edition or legacy version has ever offered a separate extraction workflow, so the safest practical answer is to use Acrobat to identify the font and obtain the font itself from its licensed source.
