The most reliable way to identify a deep-sea fish is to combine visible anatomy with the observation’s ocean basin, location, depth, habitat and behavior. A resemblance in one frame is only a candidate. Work from several clear video frames when possible, compare the candidate against specialist references, and report only the narrowest taxonomic level that the available evidence supports.
What a photograph can—and cannot—identify
A deep-sea image rarely provides every feature used by a taxonomist. Lighting may be blue, red or artificial; the animal may be partly hidden; and a camera can show only one side and one life stage. The practical goal is therefore not to force a species name. It is to establish a defensible identification level.
- Species-level candidate: The image shows the diagnostic structures required to separate that species from close relatives, and the depth, range and habitat are compatible.
- Genus-level candidate: The body plan and several characters fit a genus, but a concealed fin, mouth, scale pattern or other species-level feature is unavailable.
- Family-level candidate: The visible anatomy supports a family or broad group, while the image quality or angle prevents a narrower call.
- Unidentified deep-sea fish: The object is clearly or probably a fish, but the frame does not expose enough diagnostic information.
Use the last category when appropriate. An honest unresolved identification is more useful than a precise-looking name attached to the wrong animal.
Preserve context before you study the fish
Save the original still or video before cropping, sharpening or applying color correction. Record the information that can disappear when a clip is copied between devices:

- Ocean basin, country or expedition area, and the nearest known locality.
- Approximate depth and whether that depth is the camera’s operating depth, the seafloor depth or an estimate.
- Habitat: open water, seafloor, canyon wall, sponge or coral field, sediment, rock, hydrothermal area or another setting.
- Whether the fish was swimming above the bottom, hovering, hiding, resting on the substrate or being carried by a current.
- Date, dive number, camera platform and file name, if known.
- Whether the view comes from a remotely operated vehicle, a baited camera, a submersible, a research vessel or a recreational recording.
Context is not a substitute for anatomy. It is a filter that helps you reject candidates that could not occur in the recorded region or depth. NOAA’s Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide allows searches by keyword, depth, ocean, region and locality, and its records can include observation and environmental information. Keep the original context attached to every exported frame.
A step-by-step identification workflow
- Make a contact sheet from the sequence. For video, step through the clip and save frames showing the clearest side, top, underside and head views. Keep frames before and after the best view because a fin or appendage may be visible for only a moment.
- Separate observation from interpretation. Write down exactly what is visible before searching for names. For example: “elongated body, very large eye, lower jaw extending beyond upper jaw, long filament near the chin, dorsal fin not fully visible.” Do not write “anglerfish” at this stage.
- Describe the body plan. Note whether the fish is eel-like, ribbon-shaped, globular, laterally compressed, heavily armored, or built for bottom resting. Estimate proportions rather than relying on apparent size in a wide-angle ROV view.
- Map the fins. Record the position and shape of the dorsal, anal, pectoral, pelvic and caudal fins. Look for a continuous fin, separated finlets, a forked or rounded tail, unusually long rays, or fins modified for walking or bracing.
- Inspect the head and mouth. Check snout length, jaw extension, teeth, barbels, chin filaments, nasal tubes, gill-cover outline and whether the mouth faces forward, upward or downward. Use a frame in which the head is not obscured by particles or glare.
- Record eyes, skin and markings. Note eye size relative to the head, apparent orientation, scales or naked skin, stripes, spots, photophores, reflective patches and color that remains consistent across frames. Artificial illumination can change apparent color, so treat color as supporting evidence unless the lighting is known.
- Search references with the context and traits together. Start with NOAA’s guide for in-situ deepwater observations, then check MBARI’s Deep-Sea Guide and VARS material for organisms and habitats documented in its survey archive. Use FishBase identification tools, keys and morphometric options when the subject is a fish and the necessary measurements are visible.
- Build a shortlist. Keep two to five plausible candidates rather than accepting the first visual match. For each, record the characters that agree, the characters that conflict and the characters that cannot be seen.
- Test independent cues. Compare morphology, geographic range, ocean basin, depth and habitat. A candidate should not survive solely because its silhouette looks similar.
- Assign the narrowest defensible label. If a required structure is hidden, out of focus or visible only from an unusable angle, stop at family or genus level, or use “unidentified deep-sea fish.”
- Document the result. Save the source frame, the observation context, your visible-character list, the alternatives considered and the reason for your confidence level. This makes the identification auditable if a database changes or a future frame reveals a new feature.
How to describe visible anatomy
A consistent description prevents search results from being driven by a memorable but non-diagnostic feature. Use the checklist below for each clear frame.
| Feature | What to record | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Overall form | Length-to-depth ratio, body compression, taper, armor, gelatinous appearance and posture | Separates broad body plans before finer comparisons |
| Head and snout | Snout length, head profile, jaw position, teeth, barbels, filaments and gill-cover outline | Many deepwater groups are separated by head and mouth structures |
| Eyes | Relative size, direction of view, tubes or stalks, and whether one or both eyes are visible | Useful supporting evidence, but reflections and lighting can mislead |
| Fins | Number and position, continuous versus separate fins, fin-ray shape, long filaments and pelvic-fin placement | Fin arrangement is often more diagnostic than overall color |
| Tail | Forked, rounded or tapering caudal fin; tail length; finlets or unusual lobes | Narrows candidates with similar bodies |
| Light-producing structures | Photophores or illuminated organs, their rows and locations, if genuinely visible | Can distinguish groups, but reflections and suspended particles can imitate points of light |
| Surface and markings | Scales, naked skin, spines, stripes, spots, countershading and persistent color patterns | Helpful when consistent across frames and comparable reference images |
Mark every item as visible, partly visible or not assessable. “Not assessable” is different from “absent”: a fin hidden behind the body cannot be used as evidence that the fish lacks that fin.

Choosing the right reference
| Reference | Best use | Coverage and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| NOAA Ocean Exploration, Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide, Version 4 | Searching in-situ animal imagery by taxon, keyword, depth, ocean, region and locality | Built from NOAA Okeanos Explorer ROV dives in its documented Atlantic and Pacific coverage. Taxonomy follows WoRMS; records can include locations and environmental observations. Identifications may be corrected or revised. |
| MBARI VARS and Deep-Sea Guide | Comparing exemplary images, habitats, physical descriptions, geographic ranges and depth ranges | Represents organisms documented in MBARI’s survey archive. MBARI states that the VARS Knowledgebase and Deep-Sea Guide are being redeveloped, so a feature or page may change. |
| FishBase identification tools | Fish-focused picture identification, taxonomic and geographic filters, identification keys and morphometric paths | Useful for fish taxonomy, but pair the result with deep-sea imagery and the actual observation’s depth, location and habitat. |
| FAO Identification Guide to the Deep-Sea | Learning how photographs can support identification and consulting its illustrated treatment | The available evidence establishes a digital guide. Current retail availability of a printed edition is not established. |
These resources are not interchangeable catalogs of every deep-sea fish. Each reflects particular expeditions, archives, taxonomic treatments and image quality. A missing match means “not found in this coverage,” not “absent from the deep sea.”
How to compare competing candidates
When two or more names look plausible, use a comparison sheet instead of relying on intuition. Leave a field unresolved when the image does not show it.

| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic morphology | Do the same fins, jaw, eye, appendages and markings appear in the same arrangement? | Strongest evidence when the structure is clearly visible and the reference view is comparable. |
| Geographic range | Is the candidate recorded in the ocean basin and locality? | Can eliminate an otherwise similar candidate, but a range match alone does not prove identity. |
| Depth | Does the recorded depth overlap the candidate’s known range? | Useful filter; depth estimates and database ranges may be broad. |
| Habitat and behavior | Does the candidate occur on the seafloor, in the water column, near rock, sediment or a particular structure? | Supports or weakens a match, especially for benthic observations. |
| View and image quality | Are the reference and subject comparable in angle, life stage, distance, lighting and focus? | A poor comparison can create a false mismatch or a false match. |
Do not average these factors into a made-up numerical score. State which cues agree, which conflict and which remain unknown. If a candidate fits depth and region but conflicts with the visible fin arrangement, the anatomical conflict should control the conclusion.
Getting more from video than from a single frame
Video can reveal orientation, movement and structures that a still hides. It can also create misleading impressions because illumination, focus and background change continuously.

Extract useful frames
- Review the clip at normal speed first, then frame by frame.
- Save the clearest head, side, dorsal and ventral views, even if they come from different seconds.
- Keep the surrounding sequence so another viewer can tell whether a feature is attached to the fish or is a particle, cable, shadow or background organism.
- Compare the same feature across several frames before calling it a marking or light organ.
Use movement as supporting evidence
Swimming style can indicate whether an animal is adapted to the water column or the bottom, but it is rarely sufficient for a species name. Note hovering, undulation, rapid tail beats, fin walking, resting or a sudden defensive display. Treat behavior as context alongside anatomy, not as a replacement for it.
Account for ROV artifacts
NOAA’s labeled-fish material describes moving ROV backgrounds, changing illumination, suspended particles, varying fish orientations, partial concealment and distant indistinct fish-like objects. Some apparent fish in test material could not be verified from a single frame. Preserve a sequence and distinguish what the camera directly shows from what you infer.

- Observation: list the visible structures and the recording context.
- Candidate: give the narrowest taxon supported by those structures.
- Support: identify the matching morphology, depth, range and habitat.
- Limit: name the missing or unreliable feature that prevents a narrower identification.
For example, a report might say: “The footage shows a laterally compressed fish with a projecting lower jaw and a long chin filament at approximately 1,200 metres on a sedimented slope. The visible characters are consistent with a stomiid candidate, but the fin and photophore pattern is obscured, so species identification is not supported.” This wording records a useful taxonomic direction without pretending that an incomplete view proves a species.

Choosing a name from silhouette alone
Problem: Unrelated deep-sea fishes can share a tapering body, large eye or oversized mouth.
Correction: Require agreement in at least one head character, one fin character and the observation context before narrowing the shortlist.
Treating depth as proof
Problem: Several species can occupy the same depth band, and recorded ranges are not absolute boundaries.

Correction: Use depth to remove incompatible candidates, then verify visible anatomy and geographic range.
Calling a hidden structure absent
Problem: Perspective, darkness or the fish’s posture can conceal a fin, barbel or photophore.
Correction: Mark it “not assessable” and search for another frame.
Trusting color under artificial light
Problem: ROV lamps and camera processing alter color, while particles can create bright spots.
Correction: Prioritize shape, placement and repeated patterns across frames; describe color as lighting-dependent when necessary.

How to record and share an identification
A concise record lets another person reproduce your reasoning. Include:
- Original file name and selected frame times.
- Ocean, region, locality, depth and habitat, with an indication of which values are measured and which are estimated.
- Visible anatomy, using “not assessable” for hidden features.
- Two or more candidate taxa and the characters that separate them.
- The reference used and its scope, such as NOAA Okeanos Explorer imagery or MBARI survey material.
- Your final taxonomic level and a one-sentence uncertainty statement.
Do not remove the alternatives merely to make the result look decisive. A future taxonomic revision, clearer frame or specimen can change a name while leaving the original observation record valuable.
What the NOAA image count means
NOAA reported 6,322 images in the January 2024 update of its guide, compared with 1,685 when the guide first appeared. Those figures describe the Version 4 update at that time; they are not a live count of every image now available. Database contents, links and taxonomic names can change, so check the current official guide when making a new identification.
A practical decision rule
Publish or share a species name only when the image exposes the diagnostic structures that separate it from close relatives and the location, depth and habitat do not conflict. If one of those elements is missing, use the next broader taxonomic level. If the fish itself cannot be verified in the available frames, say so. This approach produces fewer dramatic labels, but it gives readers an identification they can evaluate, reproduce and improve when better footage becomes available.
