Start with what the image can actually show: preserve the clearest frame or video sequence, record where and how deep it was filmed, then compare visible anatomy and behavior with documented examples. A close match is a candidate, not proof of a species. NOAA’s Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide is a useful starting point for seafloor animals, but its coverage is limited to the expeditions and organisms represented in its image collection.
What you can—and cannot—identify from an underwater image
Photos and video can support an identification when they show useful features and come with reliable context. A sharp view may reveal body shape, appendages, orientation, or other visible traits; video can add movement and repeated angles. But a single image may hide the features that distinguish closely related species. Lighting, distance, camera illumination, and image processing can also change apparent color, so color alone is a weak basis for choosing between candidates.
Think of identification as a ladder of confidence: describe the animal, place it in a broad group, narrow the candidate set, and name a genus or species only when the evidence supports that level. If a diagnostic feature is obscured or absent, report the broader group or leave it unidentified. A careful “unidentified” is more useful than a confident but unsupported species name.

It helps to distinguish an observation from an interpretation. “A pale, roughly round animal with several visible appendages, seen on the seafloor” is a description of what appears in the frame. A taxonomic name is an interpretation that depends on how those features compare with known animals and on whether the location and depth make sense. Keep the description even after you settle on a candidate: if the name changes later, the original evidence remains clear.

Preserve the image and its context
Keep the strongest visual evidence
- Save the original-resolution photo or video. If you extract a still, keep the source clip too.
- Choose the clearest frame, but also retain a short sequence when it shows another angle, the animal’s orientation, or movement.
- Record whether the animal appears to be on the seafloor or suspended in the water column. NOAA’s guide focuses on benthic, or seafloor-associated, animals.
- Keep the video timestamp or frame location so another person can return to the same observation.
Repeated views can reveal details a single still misses. This is a practical comparison method, not a guarantee that video will resolve species identity. Preserve frames that show different aspects of the animal rather than saving only the most attractive or dramatic shot. One view might make the overall body form easiest to see; another may show appendages or orientation more clearly.
Avoid treating a cropped or compressed copy as the only evidence. Cropping can remove context, while reduced resolution may erase small features that matter to a comparison. If you need to share a crop for convenience, retain the uncropped original and note that the shared version has been cropped. Keep the video source and timestamp alongside any still you extract, so the sequence can be checked again.
Write down observation metadata
Record as much of the following as is available: depth, coordinates or locality, ocean and region, dive or expedition, video timestamp, and environmental conditions such as temperature, salinity, or oxygen. NOAA’s guide associates observations with geographic and depth information and, where known, environmental context. These details help narrow plausible comparisons; they do not by themselves identify an animal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBe precise about what you know and what you do not. If the exact coordinates or environmental measurements are unavailable, record the locality or region you have rather than estimating missing values. Distinguish a recorded depth from a rough estimate, and identify the source of the metadata if it is not part of the original observation. A plausible-looking species found in a different ocean region or at a very different depth may be a poorer candidate, but context is a filter for comparisons, not a substitute for visible diagnostic features.
Location and depth also make an observation reproducible. A specialist looking at the same frame can assess a candidate more effectively if they know whether it came from the seafloor or water column, where it was filmed, and when in the video it appears. Without that information, others may be forced to consider a much wider set of possible animals.
Identify in a sequence, from description to candidate
- Describe before naming. Note visible features in plain language: overall form, body parts or appendages that can be seen, orientation, and any observable movement. Mark what is hidden or unclear rather than filling it in by assumption.
- Choose a broad group. Use the visible traits to decide what broad kind of animal to compare, before attempting a genus or species. Taxonomic grouping is a starting filter, not a verdict.
- Search relevant examples. Compare images from similar depths and regions where possible. Prefer in situ imagery and examine more than one reference image if available.
- Compare diagnostic anatomy. Ask whether the candidate has the visible features your image actually shows. Do not treat a general resemblance or color match as decisive.
- Check context and identification level. See whether the reference record’s depth and location are compatible, whether the image is a comparable observation, and how specifically the reference is identified.
- Record a confidence level. Keep the candidate and the reasons for it separate from the observation itself. If the evidence does not discriminate among candidates, stop at the group level or mark it unidentified.
In practice, the sequence is a way to prevent a familiar-looking name from taking over before you have examined the evidence. Begin with a short description that does not include a taxonomic guess. Then use those traits to identify a broad group and search for examples that resemble the observation in anatomy and context. Once you have one or more candidates, test each against the same visible features. If a candidate requires a feature that your image does not show, the image has not confirmed that point.
When several candidates look plausible, compare them on five grounds: the diagnostic anatomy that is actually visible; whether other frames or movement help distinguish them; the compatibility of depth and geographic context; whether the reference is a comparable in situ observation; and the identification level and confidence recorded with that reference. A candidate supported by several matching anatomical details and compatible context is stronger than one chosen because its color or general outline looks familiar. If the evidence does not separate the candidates, keep both as possibilities or report the broader group rather than forcing a species-level answer.

Confidence should describe the conclusion, not your enthusiasm for it. You might be confident about a broad group while uncertain about the species. State that distinction plainly: for example, indicate that a group-level identification is supported while a narrower name remains tentative. The point is not to attach a numerical probability where none is available, but to make the limits of the evidence understandable to the next person who sees the record.

Use NOAA’s guide as a traceable comparison source
NOAA Ocean Exploration’s Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide, Version 4 is an accessible reference for benthic animals recorded in represented Okeanos Explorer expeditions. Its images are in situ views clipped from remotely operated vehicle (ROV) video, and the guide can be searched by taxon, keyword, depth, and location. NOAA also makes images downloadable by ocean basin with an associated CSV file.
To use the guide, first decide whether your observation is in scope: it should be a seafloor-associated animal and a comparison with deepwater observations from the represented expeditions should be relevant. Use the guide’s taxon organization if you already have a defensible broad group in mind. If you do not, keyword, depth, and location searches can help you find comparison records without pretending that a search result itself is an identification. Treat the results as examples to inspect, not an answer generated from a single matching phrase.
Open and examine the record details rather than relying only on a thumbnail. Compare the body features visible in your own image with the reference image, and check the accompanying context, especially depth and locality. A visually similar animal from a different region or depth may be a less suitable comparison. Conversely, a contextually plausible record still needs anatomical support: geography cannot make an otherwise poor visual match correct.

If a still in the guide resembles your observation, consider what the full observation might show: orientation, movement, or another angle can add useful context. Do not assume, however, that every reference includes all views needed to settle the identity. The guide’s purpose as an identification resource does not remove the limits of a particular image.
The NOAA NCEI Benthic Animal Guide interactive reference provides another way to explore the material. The downloadable images and associated CSV files, organized by ocean basin, can also be useful when you want to examine records outside the on-screen search experience or keep a traceable comparison set. Preserve the record or file information you used, so someone reviewing your identification can find the same reference.
The collection is not an exhaustive global checklist. Its documented image set reflects particular Okeanos Explorer expeditions and represented ocean basins, and coverage can expand. Not finding a match does not show that an animal is new, rare, or absent from a location; it may simply not be represented in this guide. The right next step when a search comes up empty is to record that the guide did not provide a useful match, retain the evidence, and seek a broader or specialist comparison—not to infer novelty from absence.
Why a visual match is not always a species identification
NOAA says identifications in the guide were made during live ROV dives and afterward through close examination of images and collected samples. That process can draw on evidence unavailable in a photo submitted by itself. NOAA’s official description states: “Identifications were made during live ROV dives as well as after, following close examination of images and collected samples.” A visual comparison with a guide record can be informative, but it is not equivalent to the full identification process behind that record.
Some observations may be hard to identify because the view is incomplete, the animal is partly hidden, or the available image does not show the trait that separates similar candidates. Context can help narrow the options, but it cannot reveal a missing anatomical feature. In such cases, the appropriate result may be an identification at a broader level, a list of possible candidates, or “unidentified.” These outcomes accurately communicate the evidence instead of hiding its limits.

The guide is also maintained: NOAA describes corrections, accepted taxonomic revisions, and newly described species as reasons for updates. A name or identification that was reasonable at one point can change as taxonomy changes or new evidence becomes available. Keeping your original frame, metadata, and comparison record makes it possible to revisit a conclusion if the reference itself is revised.
In a January 31, 2024 update, NOAA reported that the guide had grown from 1,685 images at launch to 6,322 still images. Those are counts reported in that dated article, not a current total. The same article said NOAA had identified over 3,000 deep-sea coral species; that figure concerns deep-sea corals, not all deep-sea animals. The scale of the reference is valuable, but neither figure makes it comprehensive.
For an uncertain observation, preserve the evidence and state the narrowest identification the visible traits support. Specialist confirmation may need clearer imagery, additional views, environmental context, or a specimen. NOAA invites corrections and expert input to the guide, so a well-documented observation is more useful than an unsupported label. Include the frame or timestamp, location and depth, and the candidate record you consulted; that gives an expert something concrete to recheck.
Use scale cautiously
NOAA describes paired red laser points on the ROV, spaced 10 centimeters apart, as a way to measure organisms. This can provide a scale reference when the points and animal are visible in the same image geometry. If the paired dots appear with the subject, their known spacing supplies a comparison reference. Without a known reference in the scene, apparent size is not a dependable measurement: distance from the camera and perspective can make the same animal look larger or smaller.
Do not infer a precise size from how much of the frame an animal occupies. A subject close to the camera can appear larger than one of the same size farther away, and a cropped image may remove context needed to judge scale. If there is no reliable scale cue in the same view, describe apparent size cautiously rather than presenting it as a measurement. Scale may help compare observations, but it does not by itself establish the animal’s identity.
Keep an identification record others can check
For each observation, retain the original image or clip, timestamp, location and depth metadata, the reference record you compared, your candidate identification, and your confidence. Note which features support the match and which are not visible. This audit trail lets another observer or specialist recheck the conclusion and makes later corrections possible.
A useful record separates the evidence into three parts: the observation, the comparison, and the conclusion. The observation is the original image or sequence plus its time and location details. The comparison names the reference image or guide record and the traits that appear to match. The conclusion states the identification level and any uncertainty. This separation makes it clear whether a claim comes from the frame, from a reference, or from your interpretation of them.

A file without a timestamp or locality can be difficult to compare with the original dive record. A candidate name without an explanation is also hard to assess. You do not need to claim certainty to make the record useful; a careful note that identifies the likely group and explains what remains unclear can invite a productive recheck.

What automated identification can—and cannot—establish
NOAA has described using deep-sea imagery to train AI for automated detection. Detection—finding or flagging animals in imagery—is not the same claim as reliably identifying every animal to species. The available information does not establish universal species-level accuracy for visual AI, so an automated label should not replace comparison of diagnostic traits, context, and expert review when certainty matters.
An automated result can be treated as a lead to inspect, not as a final determination. Check whether the animal is actually visible in the flagged frame, whether the suggested broad group fits the anatomy, and whether the location and depth are plausible for the comparison being made. If the system’s proposed name is more specific than the evidence in the image allows, report the evidence-supported level instead. The same standard applies whether a candidate came from a search, a person, or software.

Can I identify a deep-sea animal from one photo?
Sometimes a still can support a useful identification, but it may not show the diagnostic details needed to distinguish related animals. Preserve the original and look for other views or a short sequence. If the critical feature is not visible, use a broader identification or leave it unidentified rather than guessing.
What information should I save with a deep-sea video?
Keep the original clip and resolution, the timestamp or frame where the animal appears, whether it is on the seafloor or in the water column, and any available depth, coordinates or locality, ocean or region, dive or expedition, and environmental data. NOAA’s guide connects observations with location and depth, and where known with temperature, salinity, and oxygen. Do not fill in details you do not have.
Is NOAA’s Benthic Deepwater Animal Identification Guide a complete list?
No. It documents images from particular Okeanos Explorer expeditions and represented ocean basins, and it is expanded and updated over time. A missing match only means you did not find that animal represented in the guide; it does not establish that the species is new or absent from the region.
How do I compare two possible matches?
Compare diagnostic anatomy visible in your frame, additional views or movement, depth and geographic context, whether the reference is a comparable in situ observation, and the identification level associated with the reference. Do not choose on color alone, because lighting, camera illumination, distance, and processing can affect appearance. If the evidence does not separate candidates, report the broader group or list the uncertainty.
Can I estimate an animal’s size from a video still?
Only if there is a dependable scale reference in the same imaging geometry. NOAA describes paired red ROV laser points spaced 10 centimeters apart as a way to measure organisms. Without a known reference visible with the animal, camera distance and perspective make apparent size unreliable.
