Identify an AI-chip equipment company by the manufacturing stage its own documentation says it serves—not by whether its name appears near an AI-chip designer or foundry. ASML is the specialist in lithography; Applied Materials, Lam Research and Tokyo Electron supply major wafer-process and materials equipment; KLA supplies inspection, metrology and process-control systems; and Advantest supplies automated test equipment used after wafer fabrication and packaging. HBM and advanced packaging make materials engineering, yield control and final test just as important as front-end wafer tools.
What an AI-chip manufacturing-equipment supplier actually does
An AI processor is made through a chain of tightly controlled operations. No single vendor supplies “the AI-chip machine.” A credible supplier should be assigned only to the stage named in its product documentation. The useful question is therefore: Which process does this company’s equipment perform?
- Lithography: projects circuit patterns onto a wafer coated with photoresist.
- Deposition: adds thin films used to build transistors, interconnects and memory structures.
- Etch: selectively removes material to transfer a pattern into a film or substrate.
- Cleaning: removes particles and residues between process steps.
- Coating and developing: applies photoresist and develops the exposed pattern around lithography.
- Diffusion and related thermal processes: alter semiconductor material properties.
- Inspection and metrology: finds defects and measures dimensions, layers and process results.
- Packaging: connects dies, substrates and memory stacks, including advanced multi-die assemblies.
- Final test: electrically tests devices after wafer processing and again after packaging.
Chip designers, foundries and outsourced packaging houses are customers or manufacturing partners. They are not equipment suppliers unless their own product documentation shows that they design and sell manufacturing tools.
A process-stage map of the main suppliers
| Manufacturing stage | What the equipment controls | Supplier identified for that role |
|---|---|---|
| Lithography | Patterning wafer layers with exposure systems, plus related software and services | ASML |
| Materials engineering and wafer processes | Deposition, etch, cleaning and other front-end process steps | Applied Materials, Lam Research, Tokyo Electron |
| HBM and advanced packaging processes | Front-end and back-end materials steps, stacking and package integration | Applied Materials, Lam Research, Tokyo Electron |
| Inspection, metrology and process control | Defect detection, measurement, chemistry control and software from development through production | KLA |
| Wafer and packaged-device test | SoC and memory automated test, handlers, metrology and test software | Advantest |
The map is a classification tool, not a claim that each company supplies every tool in a row. A company belongs in the map only where its documentation names the relevant equipment or process.

How to verify that a company is a genuine supplier
- Define the process stage. Write down whether you are investigating lithography, deposition, etch, cleaning, coating/developing, inspection, metrology, packaging or test. “AI manufacturing” is too broad to verify a vendor.
- Read the supplier’s primary description. Look for a statement that it designs, manufactures or sells equipment, rather than a press release saying that its tools are used by a customer. ASML says, “We design and manufacture the lithography machines that are an essential part of chip manufacturing.” Tokyo Electron says, “Tokyo Electron manufactures the equipment that produces semiconductors.”
- Match the product to the step. A product page should identify the physical operation—such as etching, deposition, inspection or test—and the wafer, package or device type it handles. Do not infer a capability from a general “AI” page.
- Check the production position. Determine whether the tool is used at the front end of wafer fabrication, the back end of packaging, or final electrical test. This prevents confusing a process-control instrument with a fabrication tool.
- Look for AI-relevant exposure. Review references to advanced logic, DRAM, 3D NAND, HBM, chiplets or advanced packaging. These are more informative than an undifferentiated semiconductor customer list.
- Validate process-control and test coverage. Advanced nodes and stacked memory require defect inspection, dimensional measurement, chemistry control and electrical test. A supplier can be strategically important without making a patterning or deposition tool.
- Record geography, date and metric definitions. Sales, patent counts and packaging revenue may be fiscal-year figures or one-time expectations. Preserve the stated period instead of presenting them as timeless market share.
Which companies supply the equipment?
ASML: the lithography specialist
ASML is the clearest identifier when the stage is lithography. Its company description says it designs and manufactures lithography machines and supplies the associated hardware, software and services to chipmakers. Lithography is the pattern-transfer operation that defines the shapes later formed by deposition and etch, so an AI accelerator’s advanced logic and memory layers depend on this stage even though ASML does not make the processor itself.
When checking a claim about ASML, ask whether the source is discussing exposure equipment and its supporting systems. A statement that a chip is “made with” ASML technology identifies a lithography dependency; it does not mean ASML fabricated the wafer or supplied every other tool in the fab.
Applied Materials: materials engineering across HBM and packaging
Applied Materials is a broad materials-engineering supplier with front-end and back-end relevance. Its HBM analysis reports that the HBM manufacturing flow adds around 19 materials-engineering steps to the approximately 700 process steps needed to make a conventional DRAM. The same analysis says its equipment serves about 75 percent of those HBM-related steps.

That figure describes the share of the cited materials-engineering steps, not 75 percent of all semiconductor equipment or all HBM manufacturing. The company also said it expected HBM packaging revenue to exceed $600 million in fiscal 2024. Because that is an expectation tied to a named fiscal year, it should not be reused as a current annual result without a newer company disclosure.
Applied Materials therefore belongs in an AI-equipment comparison when the question involves thin-film and materials operations, HBM stack formation or advanced package integration. It should not be labeled the lithography supplier merely because its tools operate in the same fab.

Lam Research: etch, deposition, cleaning and memory-related processes
Lam Research identifies etch, deposition and cleaning among its equipment areas and connects its AI-era coverage to DRAM, NAND, advanced packaging and logic. Its memory discussion links HBM demand to three-dimensional stacking and packaging.
For identification purposes, Lam is a process-equipment supplier whose importance rises as structures become deeper, more layered and harder to clean without damaging adjacent features. A reference to Lam in an HBM context should be read as evidence of process and packaging exposure, not as evidence that it supplies the lithography system or the final test station.

Tokyo Electron names deposition, coater/developer, etching and cleaning as four key processes. It also lists probing, bonding and advanced packaging among its capabilities, giving it a role on both wafer fabrication and selected back-end operations.
Tokyo Electron reports semiconductor-production-equipment sales of 2.4435 trillion yen as of fiscal 2026. It also reports 24,996 patents as of fiscal 2025. Both figures are company-reported, period-specific indicators of scale and technical activity; neither is a direct measure of AI-chip market share.
The company’s own summary—“Tokyo Electron manufactures the equipment that produces semiconductors”—is useful for separating an equipment maker from a fab or chip designer. The stage-level product list is still necessary to determine which part of a customer’s process the company serves.

KLA: inspection, metrology and process control
KLA supplies the measurement and control layer that tells a fab whether its processes are working. Its annual-report description covers defect inspection, metrology, chemistry process control, in-situ process management and software for wafers, reticles, chips and packaging. The scope runs from research and development through volume production and includes advanced logic, DRAM, 3D NAND and packaging.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Its advanced-packaging systems include AI-enabled DefectWise inspection and classification. That wording describes software-assisted detection and categorization of defects; it does not turn KLA into a general-purpose AI-chip manufacturer. KLA is the right match when the question is yield, defectivity, critical-dimension measurement, layer alignment or package inspection.
A supplier can be indispensable without adding material to the wafer. Inspection and metrology identify excursions early enough for a fab to correct them, while chemistry and in-situ controls help keep a process inside its operating window.
Advantest: electrical test after fabrication and packaging
Advantest lists system-on-chip and memory test systems, automated test equipment, handlers, metrology and scanning-electron-microscope-related products, plus software. Its technology description places these systems mainly at the end of wafer production and in final inspection after packaging.
This makes Advantest a test-equipment supplier rather than a lithography or wafer-process vendor. The distinction matters for AI accelerators, whose large dies and high-bandwidth memory assemblies must be electrically screened before shipment. A handler may move and position devices, while the automated test system applies measurements and records pass/fail or characterization data; neither operation creates the transistor structure.

Why HBM and advanced packaging change the supplier picture
AI accelerators increasingly rely on high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and multi-die integration. HBM is not simply another DRAM label: stacked dies, vertical connections and package-level assembly add process steps beyond conventional memory production. Applied Materials quantifies the change as around 19 additional materials-engineering steps on top of approximately 700 steps for conventional DRAM.
The consequence is a wider equipment chain:
- Materials tools: additional films, interfaces and structures must be deposited, patterned, etched and cleaned.
- Bonding and stacking tools: dies and wafers must be aligned and joined for three-dimensional memory assemblies.
- Package inspection: defects can occur in the interconnects and stack, not only on the original wafer.
- Electrical test: the completed memory and accelerator package must be tested as an assembled device.
That is why an AI-equipment investigation should include back-end packaging and test suppliers rather than stopping at front-end lithography. It also explains why “who makes AI-chip machines?” has several correct answers, each tied to a different operation.
How to compare suppliers without mixing unlike companies
| Comparison question | What a strong answer should identify |
|---|---|
| What process does it own? | Lithography, deposition, etch, cleaning, coating/developing, inspection, metrology, packaging or test |
| Where in production is it used? | Front-end wafer fabrication, back-end packaging, or post-package electrical test |
| Which AI-enabling products are named? | Advanced logic, DRAM, NAND, HBM, chip stacking, advanced packaging or high-volume test |
| What evidence indicates scale? | Company-reported sales, installed-base information, patent counts or a dated revenue expectation, with the period preserved |
| How does process control enter? | Inspection, metrology, chemistry control, in-situ monitoring and defect classification |
| What is the geographic or fiscal qualification? | The region, fiscal year, product scope and whether a number is an expectation or reported result |
Do not rank the six suppliers by a single “AI exposure” score. Lithography, process equipment, inspection and test are complementary positions. A company can be broad across process steps, while another can be concentrated in one bottleneck that every advanced fab must control.

Calling every semiconductor company an equipment maker
A chip designer specifies an architecture, a foundry runs wafer processes, and a packaging provider assembles dies. None becomes an equipment supplier simply because it operates or purchases machines. Require a product description that says the company manufactures or sells the tool.

Confusing inspection with fabrication
Inspection and metrology measure or classify results; they do not replace deposition, etch or lithography. They are nevertheless central to yield, especially for advanced logic and stacked memory.
Using one fiscal-year figure as a permanent market-share claim
Applied Materials’ expected HBM packaging revenue above $600 million was explicitly for fiscal 2024. Tokyo Electron’s 2.4435 trillion yen sales figure is stated as of fiscal 2026, and its 24,996 patents as of fiscal 2025. Keep each number attached to its date and definition.
Assuming one supplier covers an entire HBM flow
HBM combines memory processing, stacking, bonding, inspection and test. A supplier may cover a subset of the added materials or packaging steps. Use the company’s product list to identify that subset instead of assigning the full flow to one vendor.
A practical checklist for researching a supplier
- Write the exact stage: lithography, deposition, etch, cleaning, coating/developing, inspection, metrology, packaging or test.
- Capture the supplier’s own wording about designing, manufacturing or selling equipment.
- Record the specific product family and the wafer, memory or package type it serves.
- Mark whether the tool is front end, back end or post-package test.
- Look for explicit references to advanced logic, DRAM, 3D NAND, HBM or advanced packaging.
- Separate process tools from inspection, measurement, handling and software.
- Preserve dates, fiscal-year labels, currencies and qualifiers such as “expected.”
- Check whether a quoted number covers a process subset, a product line or the company overall.
- Reject claims that rely only on a customer relationship, an “AI” label or a logo list.
The short answer for common research questions
If the question is “Who makes the lithography machines?” identify ASML. If it is “Who supplies broad wafer-process and HBM-related equipment?” examine Applied Materials, Lam Research and Tokyo Electron by their individual process portfolios. If it is “Who determines whether advanced structures meet specifications?” examine KLA’s inspection, metrology and process-control systems. If it is “Who tests devices at the end of wafer production and after packaging?” examine Advantest. The accurate answer depends on the stage, and a complete AI-chip equipment map needs all of those stages.
