An Azure VM deserves a migration or replacement review when its size family is approaching retirement, its Marketplace image is deprecated, its operating system is out of support, Azure Advisor flags a lifecycle or reliability issue, or an Azure Migrate assessment reports readiness or remediation problems. These signals start an investigation; they are not automatic orders to replace a production machine. Confirm the workload’s dependencies, supported target choices, regional capacity, security requirements and rollback plan before making a change.

What counts as a replacement signal?

Azure does not use one universal “replace this VM” flag. You build a case from several independent views of the resource:

  • Compute lifecycle: the VM’s size family is in End of Life or Retired status, or a retirement date has been announced.
  • Image lifecycle: the Marketplace image offer, plan or version has a deprecation notice with an enforcement date.
  • Guest operating system: the discovered OS version is out of support, or Azure Migrate marks the VM conditionally ready or not ready.
  • Resource recommendations: Azure Advisor identifies a retiring family, an unsuitable disk type or another reliability concern.
  • Modernization constraints: generation, Trusted Launch, encryption, driver or agent requirements prevent the current configuration from meeting the target standard.

A single alert can be informational rather than urgent. For example, a Current or Extended VM size remains supported, and an image deprecation normally allows existing VMs to keep running after enforcement. Treat the alert as a prompt to establish a deadline, test a target and decide whether resizing, in-place upgrade or parallel redeployment is safest.

Start with an accurate VM inventory

Do not begin by selecting a replacement SKU. First record the facts that determine what can be moved and what must be rebuilt. Capture the inventory from your subscription and workload owners; no general article can identify an individual tenant’s affected machines without that data.

Inventory area Record Why it changes the decision
Compute VM size family and series, current SKU, region and availability configuration Retirement dates, regional capacity and feature support differ by family and location.
Guest system Operating-system name, edition, version, architecture and patch level An old release can boot while remaining outside Microsoft support or Azure’s fully supported configuration.
Image Publisher, offer, plan and version used to create the VM Image publishers can deprecate a specific version or offer without stopping every existing VM immediately.
Platform Generation (Gen 1 or Gen 2), security type, Secure Boot and vTPM state Generation and boot-security prerequisites restrict the target designs available to you.
Storage OS and data disk types, sizes, encryption settings, caching and performance requirements Disk changes can affect latency, throughput, cost and boot compatibility.
Workload Application role, CPU and memory behavior, network flows, service accounts, agents, licensing and dependencies A technically compatible VM can still fail if the application, identity or monitoring stack is not moved.
Operations Backup, recovery-point objectives, recovery-time objectives, maintenance window and rollback method These define whether an in-place change is acceptable or a parallel cutover is required.

Include dependencies outside the VM: databases, load balancers, private endpoints, DNS records, firewalls, managed identities, key stores, monitoring rules, automation and any clustered peers. A retirement decision applies to the VM resource, but the migration risk belongs to the complete service.

Check the size-family lifecycle

Microsoft describes four lifecycle stages for Azure VM size series: Current, Extended, End of Life and Retired. Current and Extended are both modern, supported stages. End of Life means retirement has been announced and you should plan modernization. Retired means the series is no longer available to create, resize into or run; remaining VMs in that series are deallocated and lose their SLA and support.

Lifecycle stage Meaning Practical response
Current Normal supported stage. Keep the VM if it meets workload, security and performance needs; still monitor for future announcements.
Extended Still considered modern and fully supported, but later in the family lifecycle. Operate normally while checking the family page and preparing a future target if the workload is long-lived.
End of Life Retirement has been announced and a date or migration path should be available. Confirm the date, replacement guidance, regional availability and required features; build and test a migration before the deadline.
Retired The series can no longer be created, selected for resize or run as a supported VM; remaining instances are deallocated. Treat as urgent. Locate every affected resource and follow the family-specific retirement guidance.

Use the lifecycle page for the specific family, not a general assumption about a generation or processor type. Lifecycle stages vary among families. A capacity restriction is not itself a retirement announcement, although a series can have both a capacity restriction and a separate retirement date. Record those as two different risks and verify the dates for the region where the VM runs.

Inspect Marketplace image deprecation notices

Image publishers may deprecate an offer, plan or version because of security concerns or end of life. The deprecation notice and Azure Advisor identify affected resources, the enforcement date and a recommended replacement. Microsoft’s deprecated-image FAQ says notifications typically arrive 90–180 days before enforcement, but that is a typical lead time rather than a guarantee; timing varies by publisher.

Image enforcement changes deployment behavior in stages:

  1. Notification period: identify each VM and scale set using the image, read the publisher’s replacement guidance and test the proposed image.
  2. Grace period: new VMs and new Virtual Machine Scale Set instances can generally still be created from the image. Use this period to validate application startup, extensions, drivers, licensing and data initialization.
  3. After enforcement: new deployments and scale-outs from the deprecated image are blocked. Existing VMs normally continue running, but you may be unable to recreate capacity after a failure or scale event.

Do not infer the exact behavior from the word “deprecated.” Read the individual notice for its offer, plan or version and its stated enforcement date. A safe migration normally creates a new VM or scale-set model from the supported image, moves the application and data, validates health, then changes traffic or the cluster membership.

Evaluate operating-system support and Azure Migrate readiness

Azure Migrate assessments combine discovered configuration and utilization data to report readiness, target sizing, cost details and migration guidance. Use the assessment as a decision aid, not as proof that an application will work after cutover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret the readiness result

  • Ready: the assessed configuration meets the stated target criteria, subject to application testing and any assumptions in the assessment.
  • Conditionally ready: the VM may start in Azure but has a known limitation that needs remediation. An old Windows Server release is one example: it may run while lacking full Azure support.
  • Not ready or readiness blocked: resolve the reported issue—such as an unsupported OS, disk, driver, boot mode or target requirement—before treating the target as viable.

Microsoft’s migration-planning guidance identifies end-of-support Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 as prioritization signals. That does not establish the status of every older or newer release. Check the lifecycle for the actual OS version, edition and servicing model in your inventory, then follow the remediation guidance shown for that VM.

Compare the assessment’s recommended VM size, disk type and estimated cost with observed CPU, memory, disk and network behavior. A recommendation based on utilization data is more useful than copying the current SKU, but it still needs a workload test and a check for features the assessment cannot infer, such as application licensing, cluster quorum or a vendor-specific driver.

Review Azure Advisor recommendations

In the Azure portal, open Advisor and filter recommendations to the subscription, resource group and VM. Review both the VM and related resources such as disks, agents and the size family. Reliability recommendations can include moving a Standard HDD OS disk to Standard SSD or Premium SSD and migrating a retiring family to a current alternative.

Advisor recommendations are resource-specific and tied to particular announcements. For each one, verify:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the resource ID and region match the VM you are investigating;
  • the recommendation is still active and has not been superseded;
  • the proposed SKU or disk is available in the required zone or region;
  • the workload’s throughput, latency, IOPS, boot and backup requirements are compatible; and
  • the change has a tested rollback or recovery path.

An Advisor card strengthens the case for review; it does not replace Azure Migrate analysis or application-owner approval. Resolve conflicting recommendations by checking the underlying announcement and the workload’s measured requirements.

Check generation, boot security and Trusted Launch constraints

Generation is a design constraint, not by itself a retirement verdict. Gen 1 VMs use BIOS and MBR and do not support Secure Boot or vTPM by design. The cited Azure Migrate Trusted Launch path does not migrate a Gen 1 VM directly to Trusted Launch. A Gen 2 target also requires compatible signed boot components, a supported operating system and a VM size that supports the desired security type.

Before choosing a security-modernization target, verify:

  • the current generation and partition style;
  • OS and boot-loader support for Gen 2;
  • driver, extension and agent compatibility;
  • disk encryption and key-management dependencies;
  • Secure Boot and vTPM requirements; and
  • the target size, region and availability configuration.

If conversion is not supported for the exact configuration, plan a parallel Gen 2 deployment and migrate or reinstall the application and data. Treat this as a modernization constraint that may require redesign, not as evidence that every Gen 1 VM must be immediately retired.

Choose between resizing, in-place change and parallel redeployment

There is no universally best migration path. Compare the options against the same criteria so that a lower apparent effort does not hide a higher outage or rollback risk.

Option When it can fit Risks and checks
In-place resize The workload remains compatible with the target family, generation, OS, disk layout and security type. Capacity may be unavailable; a restart or deallocation may be required; the new SKU may change network, disk or licensing behavior. Confirm rollback to the original SKU.
In-place OS or configuration upgrade The OS vendor and application support an upgrade path and the VM’s boot, encryption and agents remain compatible. Legacy applications, drivers and agents can fail during upgrade. Take a recoverable backup and test the complete sequence on a clone.
Parallel redeployment You need Gen 2 or Trusted Launch, a new image, a clean OS, a different disk design or a low-risk cutover. Requires temporary capacity and a repeatable data/application migration. Plan DNS, identity, secrets, monitoring and traffic switching.
Application-led rebuild The VM is only a host for an application that can be installed on a new supported base image. Configuration drift and undocumented dependencies are the main hazards. Capture settings, test restore and retain the old VM until acceptance.

Score each candidate on support status and deadline, workload compatibility and downtime, CPU/memory/storage/network performance, required features and security generation, regional capacity, licensing and estimated cost, and rollback and recovery options. Azure Migrate supplies useful target, disk, readiness and cost outputs, but your application test decides whether the result is acceptable.

A repeatable identification and migration workflow

  1. Scope the estate. Export or otherwise record every VM, scale set instance and related disk in the subscriptions you own. Assign an owner and business criticality to each workload.
  2. Complete the inventory. Add family, region, OS, image identifiers, generation, security type, disks, dependencies, availability requirements, backup objectives and observed utilization.
  3. Mark lifecycle risks. Check the specific size-family lifecycle page and separate Current, Extended, End of Life and Retired resources. Record retirement and capacity dates with their region and source.
  4. Mark image risks. Read each Marketplace deprecation notice, capture its enforcement date and replacement image, and identify scale sets that could fail to scale after enforcement.
  5. Run or refresh an Azure Migrate assessment. Review readiness, conditional blockers, target sizing, disk recommendations, cost details and remediation guidance. Investigate old OS releases rather than assuming that a successful boot means full support.
  6. Review Advisor. Filter to each affected resource and validate recommendations for disks, agents and retiring families against measured workload needs.
  7. Check modernization prerequisites. Confirm Gen 1 or Gen 2, Secure Boot, vTPM, signed boot components, encryption, OS, drivers, extensions, target SKU and regional capacity before selecting a design.
  8. Build and test the target. Prefer a parallel instance when the image, generation or OS changes. Restore or replicate representative data, install the application and agents, and test normal load, failure recovery, backup, monitoring and security controls.
  9. Plan and execute cutover. Freeze or replicate writes as required, switch traffic or cluster membership, verify health and measure performance against acceptance criteria. Keep the source available for the agreed rollback window.
  10. Close the lifecycle risk. Update the inventory, remove obsolete scale-set models and images, confirm backups and monitoring on the target, and document the retirement or deallocation of the old resource.

Common failure modes and how to avoid them

Confusing capacity with retirement

A temporary inability to allocate a SKU in one region does not prove that the family is retired. Check the lifecycle announcement separately, then compare another zone or an approved current family only after confirming feature equivalence.

Waiting for the enforcement date

Existing VMs may continue after image enforcement, but a blocked redeployment or scale-out can turn a routine change into an outage. Use the notification window to test the replacement and update scale-set definitions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming “conditionally ready” means production-ready

Conditional readiness identifies a known support or configuration limitation. Read the remediation, validate the OS lifecycle and test the application; do not waive the condition merely because a VM starts.

Copying the current SKU

A same-size replacement can preserve an unsuitable disk, generation or network profile. Use observed resource behavior and the assessment’s target sizing, then verify the workload’s peak and failover requirements.

Ignoring non-VM dependencies

New compute does not automatically carry identities, secrets, DNS, firewall rules, agents, certificates, scheduled jobs or database connectivity. Use a dependency checklist and an owner for every external integration.

Changing generation without a recovery path

Gen 1 limitations cannot be assumed away. If direct Trusted Launch migration is unavailable, use a supported parallel deployment, preserve a tested backup and define how to return traffic to the source.

How urgent is the review?

Observed condition Priority and next action
Retired size family or an immediate operational deadline Urgent: identify every resource, confirm the retirement guidance and execute a tested migration or supported redeployment.
End-of-Life family with a published future date Planned: select a target, test it and schedule cutover before the date; do not wait for deallocation.
Image deprecation with 90–180 days of typical notice Time-bound: test the replacement image and update deployment templates before enforcement, especially for scale sets.
Out-of-support OS or conditional readiness Risk review: follow remediation guidance, verify application support and decide between upgrade and rebuild.
Advisor recommendation only, with no deadline Validate: confirm scope, performance benefit and cost, then schedule during normal change management.
Gen 1 or missing Trusted Launch prerequisites Architecture review: determine whether the security target is required and whether parallel redeployment is the supported route.

What to document before approving a change

  • The exact source VM, family, image version, OS release, generation, region and disks.
  • The lifecycle, image, OS, Advisor or Azure Migrate condition that triggered review, including its stated date.
  • Target SKU, image, disk type, generation, security settings, region and capacity evidence.
  • Measured acceptance criteria for CPU, memory, disk latency or throughput, network behavior, startup, backup and failover.
  • Data-copy method, downtime window, traffic-switch procedure, responsible owners and rollback trigger.
  • Post-cutover checks for monitoring, alerting, identity, secrets, certificates, agents, licensing and backups.

Lifecycle pages, Marketplace notices, Advisor recommendations and Azure Migrate capabilities change over time. Recheck the current tenant notice and family-specific documentation immediately before an operational change, particularly when a date, supported SKU, region or enforcement behavior is involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do existing VMs stop when a Marketplace image is deprecated?

Not necessarily. Microsoft’s deprecated-image guidance says enforcement generally blocks new deployments and scale-outs from the image while existing VMs continue running. The individual publisher notice controls the exact date and behavior, so use it to plan a replacement before you need to recreate capacity.

Is an Azure Advisor recommendation enough evidence to replace a VM?

No. Advisor identifies a resource-specific reliability or lifecycle concern. Validate the recommendation against Azure Migrate readiness, measured workload requirements, regional capacity, cost, dependencies and a tested rollback plan.

Can a Gen 1 VM be migrated directly to Trusted Launch?

The cited Azure Migrate Trusted Launch path does not migrate Gen 1 VMs directly to Trusted Launch. Check Gen 2 OS, signed-boot, encryption, driver and target-SKU prerequisites; a parallel deployment may be required.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between End of Life and Retired VM sizes?

End of Life means retirement has been announced and modernization should be planned. Retired means the series is no longer available to create, resize into or run as a supported VM; remaining instances are deallocated and lose SLA and support.

Should I resize in place or deploy a new VM?

Choose based on compatibility, downtime, generation and security requirements, regional capacity, performance, licensing, cost and rollback. In-place changes can be simpler, while parallel redeployment is safer when the image, OS, generation or disk design changes.
