Leave the object where it is, keep machinery and people away, photograph it in place, record its precise location, and contact the geological survey, state paleontologist, natural history museum, or university paleontology department serving that location. Do not wash, pry, scrape, dig around, or carry away a suspected fossil. A bone-shaped rock is only a possible fossil until an expert examines both the object and the geological setting.

This approach protects fragile evidence and preserves the context experts need. Ownership, reporting duties, excavation rights, and collection rules depend on the country, state or province, land category, and sometimes the type of fossil. Treat the discovery as an identification and reporting matter first.

I found something that looks like a dinosaur bone on my land. What should I do?

  1. Stop disturbance. Leave the object in the exact position in which you found it. Keep livestock, vehicles, workers, and farm machinery away if you can do so without creating a safety problem. Do not probe the soil, brush away surrounding material, pour water on it, or attempt to expose more of it. Removing a fragment can destroy information about its position, orientation, and relationship to nearby rock.
  2. Photograph it before contacting anyone. Take a sharp close-up, views from several angles, and wider photographs that show the object in its field or outcrop. Include a ruler, tape measure, or other scale only if it can be placed without touching or shifting the find. If adding a scale would disturb the site, omit it and estimate the dimensions in your notes.
  3. Record the location and setting. Save GPS coordinates from a phone or camera when available. Write down the date, approximate length and width, color, texture, orientation, and the soil or rock in which the object appears. Note nearby landmarks so another person can find the spot. Record whether erosion, plowing, grading, construction, weather, or routine farm work exposed it.
  4. Tell the landowner or authorized farm manager. If you are a tenant, employee, contractor, guest, or finder on someone else’s property, notify the owner or authorized manager promptly. Being the person who noticed an object does not automatically give you a right to remove it.
  5. Ask a local expert for instructions. In the United States, start with the geological survey or state paleontologist for the state where the farm is located. A natural history museum or university paleontology department is another appropriate contact. Send photographs, coordinates, and notes first; do not mail or transport the specimen unless an expert specifically asks you to.

The Natural History Museum of Utah summarizes the practical priority as leaving a find in place, recording its GPS position, and taking several photographs. That is good field practice, not a universal legal rule.

How can I tell if a rock is a fossilized bone?

You generally cannot confirm a dinosaur fossil from appearance alone. Bone, weathered wood, mineral concretions, and naturally patterned rock can look surprisingly similar in a photograph or in the hand. Specialists evaluate the object together with its surrounding sediment, the age and type of rock, its position, and other fossils or traces nearby.

What counts as a fossil?

Fossils are evidence of ancient life. They include bones and teeth, but also footprints, burrows, impressions, coprolites, plant remains, and other traces. A find that is not dinosaur bone may still be scientifically useful. A trackway or an invertebrate fossil can reveal the age and environment of the same rock layer.

Why geology matters more than a superficial resemblance

Dinosaur fossils occur in rocks from the Mesozoic Era: the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. Researchers use geological maps to identify where those rock units occur. If a farm sits on much younger deposits, a dinosaur-bone interpretation may be less likely, although loose material can be transported and local geology can be complicated. Only a qualified examination can connect an object to its rock unit reliably.

Possible surface clues, used cautiously

Experienced researchers may look for a porous, honeycomb-like internal structure in broken dinosaur bone. That microscopic or fine-scale texture can help an expert distinguish bone from some rocks, but it is not a dependable do-it-yourself test. Do not break a specimen to look inside. A hand lens can help you describe visible surface details, but a generic 10x hand lens cannot establish that an object is dinosaur bone.

Why you should skip the “lick test”

Some field accounts mention touching a tongue to a potentially porous fossil because a dry bone surface may briefly feel adhesive. That observation is unnecessary, unhygienic on a farm, and not diagnostic. Photograph the object and obtain expert guidance instead.

How to document a possible fossil without damaging it

Photographs

  • Begin with the object exactly as found, before moving soil, stones, plants, or tools.
  • Take one close image that shows surface texture and one image from each accessible side.
  • Include wider views with fences, trees, buildings, field boundaries, or other fixed landmarks.
  • Use natural light when possible, avoid casting a deep shadow across the surface, and keep the camera steady.
  • Add a scale only when it can be set down without contact or disturbance.
  • Keep the original files and note which direction each view faces if that will help an expert interpret orientation.

Written notes

  • GPS coordinates, plus a plain-language description of how to reach the spot.
  • Date and approximate time of discovery.
  • Visible dimensions and the portion that remains covered.
  • Color, grain, texture, cracks, pores, unusual markings, and whether the surface is rounded or angular.
  • Orientation: for example, whether it lies horizontally, vertically, or follows a layer of rock.
  • Soil, gravel, or bedrock immediately around it.
  • What exposed it: natural erosion, a washout, plowing, trenching, road work, animal activity, or another event.
  • Any recent weather or farm operation that may have changed the ground.

Do not clean the surface to make photographs clearer. Soil and attached matrix can show how the object was deposited and may contain small associated fossils.

Who can identify a possible dinosaur fossil near me?

United States: begin with the state geological survey

Contact the geological survey or state paleontologist in the state where the discovery lies. For a Utah discovery, the Utah Geological Survey provides an “Ask a Geologist” route and directs people who find objects elsewhere to the geological survey in that other state. Include your photographs, coordinates, and notes in the initial message.

Museums and universities

A natural history museum or a university paleontology department serving the area can also triage a report and tell you which public agency handles permits or site access. Choose an institution familiar with the local geology rather than sending the specimen to an unrelated collector.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outside the United States

Contact the national or regional geological survey, a natural history museum, or the heritage authority responsible for the exact location. There is no single reporting office that covers every country, and national, provincial, and local rules can differ.

Do I have to report a fossil found on private property?

There is no one answer for every farm. Reporting channels and legal duties depend on jurisdiction, ownership, land category, and sometimes the scientific significance or type of fossil. Even where no mandatory report is established, asking a local authority to assess the find is the safest way to learn what may happen next.

Location or example What the guidance says What it does not establish
Private farmland in the United States Notify the owner or authorized manager, seek local expert advice, and confirm permission before any collection or excavation. It does not create one nationwide rule for ownership, reporting, or removal.
Utah private land Utah Geological Survey guidance says permission is required for private-land collection and encourages reporting finds for scientific documentation. Utah guidance does not determine the law in another state or country.
Florida private property The Florida Museum explains that fossils found on Florida private property belong to the property owner and invites reports of significant finds for identification and possible collection-permitting guidance. This example cannot be applied automatically outside Florida.
BLM-administered federal land The Bureau of Land Management says a unique fossil should be left in place, photographed, located, and reported to a local BLM office. It states that collecting dinosaur and other vertebrate fossils without a research permit is illegal on BLM land. BLM rules concern BLM-administered land, not private farms or every state-owned parcel.

The table illustrates why the exact location must be identified before anyone excavates or removes material. Private, state, and federal land can be governed by different systems, and a rule for one category is not a shortcut for another.

Can I dig up a fossil on my own farm?

Do not begin digging merely because the land is privately owned. First obtain local advice and confirm the legal position for the specific property. The Natural History Museum of Utah and the Utah Geological Survey both state that written landowner permission is needed to collect on private land. If you are not the owner, you need permission from the owner or authorized representative even before collection is considered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Permission to enter or inspect a site is different from permission to collect. Ask the relevant agency or institution whether an excavation, collection, export, or specialist visit requires a written agreement or permit. Keep the object in place until those questions are answered.

Why removing a visible piece can reduce its value

A loose fragment separated from its layer may be impossible to associate with a particular animal, age, or environment. The position of a bone, the direction it faces, the surrounding sediment, and nearby fragments can matter as much as the object itself. Digging can also damage a larger specimen that is partly hidden and can erase tracks or other traces around it.

What if farm work has already exposed or damaged it?

Record what happened without trying to reconstruct the site. Note the machine, operation, weather event, or date that exposed the object. Stop work immediately around it if continuing could strike, crush, or remove it. Move machinery only as needed for safety, not to obtain a better view. Send the expert your before-and-after photographs, if you have them, and explain exactly what changed.

If the site creates a hazard for people, livestock, or equipment, secure the area in the least disruptive way possible and tell the responding expert about the safety issue. Safety takes priority, but avoid moving the specimen unless a qualified authority directs it.

What should I include in a report?

A concise first report should answer five practical questions: what was found, where it is, how it was exposed, what it looks like, and who controls access to the land. Attach the original photographs and provide coordinates in the format your phone records. Explain whether the object is still undisturbed and whether any work is scheduled nearby.

Ask the recipient whether they want additional photographs, a site visit, or a particular agency notified. Do not send the object by post or carry it to a museum without instructions; transport can break fragile material and may create a legal problem if permission has not been established.

Common mistakes that make an identification harder

  • Washing the object: removes sediment and can damage a soft or cracked surface.
  • Digging around the edge: destroys the original contact between the object and its surrounding layer.
  • Using tools to pry it free: can split a specimen and eliminate the context experts need.
  • Relying on a single close-up: hides scale, orientation, and the geological setting.
  • Assuming ownership answers every legal question: rules vary by jurisdiction and land category.
  • Posting the precise location publicly: can attract unauthorized collecting or trespass before the site is assessed.
  • Calling the object a dinosaur fossil as a certainty: encourages premature conclusions; describe it as a possible fossil until reviewed.
  • Continuing a scheduled excavation or grading job: may destroy associated material. Tell the local expert what work is planned so they can advise you.

A practical decision path for a farm discovery

  1. See a bone-shaped object: stop touching it and keep traffic away.
  2. Make a record: photograph close, wide, and from several angles; save coordinates and notes.
  3. Notify the person who controls the property: owner, farm manager, or authorized representative.
  4. Contact the local authority or specialist: state geological survey, state paleontologist, museum, university, or the equivalent agency outside the United States.
  5. Wait for instructions: ask about access, collection, permits, and any scheduled farm work.
  6. Follow the jurisdiction-specific decision: only collect or excavate after the required permission and legal checks are complete.

What experts may do next

An expert may identify the material from photographs, request additional views, compare the location with geological maps, or arrange a site visit. They may determine that the object is ordinary rock, a non-dinosaur fossil, or a scientifically significant vertebrate specimen. A report remains useful even when the first impression is wrong because the context can help document the local geology.

The significance of a find cannot be inferred from its size or dramatic appearance. A small fragment in a well-understood layer may answer a different question from a larger object found without context. Let the specialist decide whether collection, conservation, or a formal record is appropriate.

Key points to remember

  • Leave a possible fossil where it lies.
  • Photograph it in place and record GPS coordinates, date, dimensions, appearance, orientation, and surrounding material.
  • Do not use washing, scraping, breaking, or a lick test to identify it.
  • Contact the geological survey, state paleontologist, museum, or university serving the exact location.
  • Confirm landowner permission and jurisdiction-specific rules before any collection, excavation, or expert access.
  • Private farmland, state land, and federal land can have different requirements; a rule from one place is not universal.
