An AlphaServer 2100 that “won’t boot” can be failing at several different points: it may have no power, be running self-tests with no visible screen, be sending its console to a serial terminal, fail to reach firmware, lose sight of a boot device, or load firmware but stop before the operating system. The safest repair is to identify the last stage reached, record the machine’s own diagnostics, and then test the suspected path. Do not replace a board, disk, controller, or power supply solely because the screen is blank.

This guide follows the machine’s observable stages, from power-up through SRM or ARC and finally the operating-system loader. Keep a written record of every message, variable, device name, and test result so that an intermittent fault can be reproduced and a service technician has useful evidence.

Start by identifying the last stage reached

Before changing cables or entering commands, write down exactly what happens when the machine is switched on. The AlphaServer 2100 Owner’s Guide separates power problems, console-access problems, console-reported errors, and operating-system boot problems; using those same boundaries prevents you from applying an operating-system fix to a power fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Last observable stage Evidence to record Most useful next action
No expected power-up activity Power indicators, fans, and whether the operator control panel (OCP) lights or display changes Check the OCP and the powered terminal or monitor path; do not assume a failed component yet
OCP active, screen blank OCP diagnostic sequence, Halt LED behavior, monitor/terminal connections, and console routing Determine whether output is configured for a serial port rather than VGA
Self-test or firmware error Exact OCP text, power-up-screen text, Halt LED state, and any error code Review FRU information and the console event log, then run the relevant firmware test
SRM or ARC prompt appears Firmware path, discovered devices, boot variables, and the command that fails Compare discovery output with the installed configuration and verify the correct boot settings
Boot device is listed but the OS does not load Device name, boot command, error text, and test result Run test on that device and follow the result rather than guessing at a replacement

This staged approach is the practical answer to searches such as “AlphaServer 2100 won’t boot,” “AlphaServer 2100 no console screen,” “AlphaServer 2100 cannot find boot device,” and “AlphaServer 2100 SRM boot error.” Those phrases describe symptoms, not single faults.

Make a diagnostic worksheet

Record the chassis variant if it is known, the installed operating system, whether the console is SRM or ARC, and the date and time of each attempt. Note whether the failure is repeatable after a complete power cycle or appears only after a warm restart. Photograph the OCP display if the characters are difficult to transcribe. Save console output to a terminal log when possible. This costs nothing and prevents a later configuration change from erasing the original clue.

When there is no apparent power-up

Check for activity, not just video

Observe the power indicators, fans, and OCP display during a cold start. A machine can have power and be performing diagnostics even when a VGA monitor shows nothing. The Owner’s Guide specifically directs operators to inspect the OCP for a self-test failure and to verify that the keyboard and monitor are connected and powered.

  • Confirm the chassis power connection and that the external supply or distribution unit is switched on.
  • Check whether the OCP display changes at all after power is applied.
  • Note any Halt LED behavior or diagnostic characters instead of cycling power repeatedly.
  • Verify that the terminal or monitor and keyboard have their own power and secure connections.
  • Use the same outlet or distribution arrangement that previously powered the system, if known, and record any change in fan or indicator behavior.

If the OCP remains completely inactive, the available 2100 documentation does not provide a safe, model-specific component-level power-supply repair procedure for an unidentified chassis. Treat this as an observation and service issue: preserve the symptoms, consult the exact chassis service documentation, and have measurements made by a qualified technician. Do not infer a failed supply, CPU board, or backplane from a blank display alone.

Why repeated power cycling is unhelpful

Repeatedly switching the system off can make an intermittent diagnostic disappear and can remove useful event history. Allow one complete startup attempt, capture the OCP state and console output, then shut down only as required by the applicable service procedure. If the machine changes behavior after a cycle, record that fact rather than assuming the latest behavior is the original fault.

When the OCP is active but the console screen is blank

Rule out the wrong output route

The AlphaServer 2100 can route the power-up screen to a serial communications port according to its console settings. Consequently, “no console screen” may mean that the system is talking to a serial terminal while the VGA monitor remains blank.

  1. Read the OCP diagnostic display and record its sequence or error message.
  2. Confirm that the monitor is powered, connected to the intended video output, and set to the correct input.
  3. Check the keyboard connection; the Owner’s Guide includes keyboard and terminal checks in its “Problems Getting to Console Mode” procedure.
  4. If serial console operation is possible or suspected, connect a known-good terminal to the configured serial port and observe the power-up output.
  5. Avoid changing firmware variables until you know which console path the machine is using; an unnecessary change can make later diagnosis harder.

If a serial terminal displays the startup text, the system is not failing at the same point as a machine with no OCP activity. Continue from the firmware prompt and record the configuration before attempting a boot.

Distinguish a display fault from a console-selection issue

A powered monitor with no text does not prove that the video hardware or system board has failed. The decisive observations are OCP activity and whether any console path produces text. If serial output is present, work from that console rather than replacing video hardware. If neither serial nor video output appears but the OCP reports progress, preserve the exact OCP sequence and seek the model-specific console procedure.

When startup diagnostics stop or report an error

Capture the exact diagnostic evidence

Write down the complete OCP message, Halt LED behavior, and every line visible on the power-up screen. A paraphrase such as “hardware error” is not enough to select a field-replaceable unit (FRU). The original AlphaServer 2100 Owner’s Guide instructs operators to use the OCP diagnostic display to identify the reported error, then inspect FRU and event information from the console.

Inspect FRU and event records

  • show fru — displays field-replaceable-unit information associated with the reported condition.
  • cat el — displays the console event log, where recorded hardware or firmware events may add context.

Preserve the output before clearing logs or rebooting again. Correlate a console message with the OCP indication and the installed configuration. If the console identifies a mass-storage, EISA, or PCI problem, use the corresponding troubleshooting flow and test the device. A generic symptom does not establish which board or disk has failed.

When several messages appear, note their order. The first reported condition may explain later “device missing” or boot errors. Do not treat every subsequent message as an independent failure until the earliest diagnostic has been evaluated.

Firmware reinstall is a conditional path

The Owner’s Guide mentions firmware reinstallation for a console-program error. That is not a first-line remedy for an unknown power-up fault. Use it only when the observed diagnostic specifically supports a console-program or firmware problem, and use firmware documentation and an image that match the installed system configuration. Make a backup of configuration information first when the console is still usable.

When the machine reaches firmware but not the operating system

Identify SRM versus ARC before entering commands

The 2100 family uses SRM for Digital UNIX and OpenVMS and ARC for Windows NT. Their commands, variables, and boot procedures are different. A command copied from an SRM procedure should not be applied to an ARC installation merely because both systems are AlphaServer 2100 machines.

Firmware path Typical operating-system path Evidence to inspect
SRM Digital UNIX or OpenVMS show config, show device, show memory, and SRM environment variables
ARC Windows NT ARC hardware and boot-device listings plus FWSEARCHPATH, AUTOLOAD, and COUNTDOWN

First identify the prompt or firmware interface shown on the console. If the installed operating system is uncertain, do not overwrite variables or initialize anything until the configuration and storage layout have been documented.

SRM: inspect hardware and boot variables

The AlphaServer 2100A LP family guide documents a compact discovery sequence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. At the SRM prompt, run show config to review the reported system configuration.
  2. Run show device to list storage and other bootable devices visible to firmware.
  3. Run show memory when memory detection is relevant to the reported problem.
  4. Inspect the environment variables, especially os_type, bootdef_dev, boot_file, and boot_osflags.
  5. Compare every device name and variable with the operating system and hardware actually installed in this chassis.

bootdef_dev must point to the intended default device. boot_file and boot_osflags must match the installed boot procedure, and os_type must identify the operating-system family expected by the firmware. The LP guide is family documentation, so confirm names and syntax against the exact 2100 variant and its operating-system instructions before changing values.

Save the original values before editing them. A typographical error in a device name can make a healthy disk appear unavailable, while an incorrect operating-system flag can stop a valid loader after the device has already been found. Change one setting at a time, retry once, and record the result so that the previous state can be restored.

ARC: use Windows NT firmware settings

ARC systems expose a different firmware environment. Use ARC’s hardware and boot-device listings rather than SRM commands and do not assume that bootdef_dev or boot_osflags controls a Windows NT installation. The family guide’s Windows NT boot-error table refers to FWSEARCHPATH, AUTOLOAD, and COUNTDOWN. Inspect those settings in the ARC interface and compare them with the intended Windows NT boot path.

When firmware cannot find the intended boot device

Separate “absent” from “present but unbootable”

First compare show device and show config output with the installed disks, controllers, and buses. A device absent from discovery is a different problem from a device that appears in the list but fails when booted.

  • Absent from discovery: check the physical connection, controller visibility, and the relevant EISA or PCI diagnostic message. Do not select a replacement part without a matching error and configuration.
  • Present in discovery: proceed to a device test and inspect the boot variables before treating the medium as failed.

For a device that firmware can see but cannot boot, the family guide’s diagnostic flow recommends the firmware test command. The original Owner’s Guide states the instruction plainly: “Run the test command to verify the problem.” Use the exact device identifier reported by show device, record the complete result, and let that evidence determine whether the next step is a configuration correction, a storage investigation, or qualified service.

Check discovery before blaming the medium

A missing device name can reflect a controller, bus, connection, or configuration issue rather than a failed disk. Compare the reported hardware with the chassis inventory and note whether other devices on the same controller or bus are also absent. A single missing target and an entire missing bus provide different evidence. The guides do not authorize selecting a particular replacement disk or controller from these symptoms alone.

Interpret a failed device test cautiously

A failed test result is important evidence, but it is still part of a diagnostic chain. Preserve the command, exact device identifier, and returned text. Correlate it with OCP messages, show fru, cat el, and the physical configuration. If the result identifies a service condition without isolating a replaceable part, stop at that point and obtain exact-model service assistance.

A specialized CD-ROM or network-boot condition

Digital UNIX installation documentation describes one specific AlphaServer 2100-series condition involving CD-ROM or network boot. Check the SRM variable bus_probe_algorithm. If it is set to old, set it to new and initialize the console before retrying the installation or boot procedure.

This is a narrowly scoped installation-path requirement, not a universal cure for an AlphaServer 2100 that will not boot. Do not change the variable merely because a disk boot failed, and record its original value before making a change. Apply the procedure only when the attempted CD-ROM or network path and the Digital UNIX installation instructions match the situation.

A safe evidence-first recovery sequence

  1. Make one controlled power-up attempt and record indicators, OCP text, Halt LED behavior, and any console output.
  2. Confirm whether output is on VGA or a serial terminal; do not assume a blank monitor means a dead system.
  3. At the firmware prompt, identify SRM or ARC and save the current configuration and variable values.
  4. Use the appropriate discovery commands or ARC listings to determine whether the intended boot device is visible.
  5. Inspect show fru and cat el when an error is reported and preserve their output.
  6. If the device is visible, run the firmware test command for that exact device.
  7. Change only the setting supported by the evidence, retry once, and document the result.
  8. Escalate to exact-variant service documentation when diagnostics identify a hardware or firmware condition that these steps do not isolate.

This sequence avoids two common wastes: replacing parts before the machine identifies a fault and changing several firmware variables at once so that the original cause cannot be reconstructed.

Decision table: what to do with the evidence you have

Observed evidence Interpretation Next step
OCP shows a self-test failure Startup diagnostics reached a reported hardware or firmware condition Record the exact message; inspect show fru and cat el when console access is available
OCP active, VGA blank, serial output present Console output is routed to serial Use the serial console, document settings, and continue with firmware diagnostics
SRM prompt, intended device missing from show device Firmware is not discovering the boot path Check the relevant controller/bus evidence and physical connections; avoid blind replacement
SRM prompt, device listed, boot fails Discovery succeeded but boot execution failed Verify os_type, bootdef_dev, boot_file, and boot_osflags, then run test
ARC prompt, Windows NT boot fails ARC settings or its boot path may be incorrect Inspect FWSEARCHPATH, AUTOLOAD, and COUNTDOWN in ARC
Console-program error explicitly reported Firmware itself may be damaged or unsuitable Follow the matching firmware-reinstallation documentation and verify the image/configuration match

Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder

Replacing parts because the monitor is blank

A blank VGA display does not prove loss of power or a failed video subsystem. Check OCP activity and serial-console routing first.

Changing SRM variables on an ARC installation

SRM and ARC are separate firmware paths. Confirm the operating system and firmware prompt before changing any variable.

Calling a device “dead” because it is not the default boot target

Inspect the complete discovery list and current boot variables. A wrong bootdef_dev or search path can look like a storage failure.

Clearing logs before recording them

FRU and event information can be the only record of an intermittent fault. Capture show fru, cat el, OCP text, and test output first.

Installing firmware as a general-purpose fix

Firmware work carries configuration and compatibility risks. Reserve it for a diagnostic-supported console-program or firmware condition and use the exact system documentation.

Assuming a family guide exactly matches every chassis

The AlphaServer 2100A LP guide is useful for related-family discovery and boot details, but it is not a substitute for the documentation for the exact 2100 variant. Confirm command syntax, console arrangement, and service procedures before making a hardware or firmware change.

What the historical documentation can and cannot establish

The primary source is Digital Equipment Corporation’s AlphaServer 2100 Owner’s Guide EK-KN450-OP.B01, dated February 1995. It is an archival operating and troubleshooting guide for the 2100 and is the direct source for OCP, console, FRU, and event-log procedures. The AlphaServer 2100A LP Installation/Owner’s/Service Guide supplies related-family details for device discovery, boot variables, and diagnostic flow; it is not a substitute for checking the exact chassis variant. A Digital UNIX installation guide supplies the specialized bus_probe_algorithm condition described above.

These documents provide diagnostic directions, not a guaranteed repair for an individual machine. They do not identify the failed component without that machine’s OCP message, console output, configuration, and test results. Current replacement-part availability, present-day vendor support, and marketplace listings are not established by these procedures. Preserve the evidence and obtain exact-model service help when the machine reports a hardware condition that the documented tests cannot isolate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check first when an AlphaServer 2100 won’t boot?

Identify the last stage reached. Observe power indicators, fans, and the OCP, then determine whether console output is on VGA or a serial terminal. Record the exact diagnostic text before changing hardware or firmware settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my AlphaServer 2100 have no console screen even though it powers on?

The power-up console may be routed to a serial communications port instead of VGA. Check the OCP, monitor and keyboard connections, and a terminal on the configured serial path before assuming a video or system-board failure.

What does an AlphaServer 2100 SRM boot error mean?

At SRM, separate device discovery from boot execution. Use show config and show device, inspect os_type, bootdef_dev, boot_file, and boot_osflags, then run test on a visible boot device.

How do I troubleshoot an AlphaServer 2100 that cannot find its boot device?

Compare the installed hardware with the output of show config and show device. If the device is absent, investigate controller, bus, connection, and diagnostic evidence. If it is listed, check boot variables and test that exact device.

Should I replace the disk or power supply when the screen is blank?

No. A blank VGA display can coexist with active OCP diagnostics or serial-console output. The model documentation does not identify a replacement component from a blank screen alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are show fru and cat el used for?

show fru reports field-replaceable-unit information associated with a condition, while cat el displays the console event log. Save both outputs before clearing logs or rebooting repeatedly.

When should I reinstall AlphaServer firmware?

Only when the startup diagnostic explicitly indicates a console-program or firmware problem and the matching documentation and image are available. Firmware reinstallation is not a general fix for an unexplained power-up failure.

Is bus_probe_algorithm a general AlphaServer 2100 boot fix?

No. Digital UNIX installation instructions describe changing it from old to new for a specific CD-ROM or network-boot condition, followed by console initialization. Do not apply that change to every disk-boot failure.

Can this guide tell me which replacement part to buy or what it will cost?

No. The historical procedures require the machine’s OCP message, console output, configuration, and test results before a component can be identified. They do not establish current part compatibility, availability, or pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Find the last stage the AlphaServer 2100 reaches, preserve its OCP and console evidence, and test that stage before replacing anything. Check serial-console routing when VGA is blank; use SRM commands only for Digital UNIX/OpenVMS and ARC settings for Windows NT; distinguish an absent device from a listed but unbootable one; and reserve firmware reinstallation or component service for diagnostics that specifically support it.
