Start by photographing the item and transcribing every visible identifier before cleaning, opening, or testing it. Then use its platform, serial or product code, region, version, and packaging details to find possible catalog matches. Treat a match as a lead, not proof that your physical copy is the same release. An unusual label or shell alone does not prove an item is a prototype.
Document the item before you handle it further
Small markings can be easy to miss, and cleaning or opening an item may change or obscure evidence. Make a record of what is already visible first. Photograph the item from several angles and transcribe the text exactly, including unusual spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.
Take a useful set of photographs
- For a cartridge, photograph the front, back, spine or top edge, and any visible connector or board markings without forcing the shell open.
- For a disc, photograph both sides, the printed label, the center area, and the inner-ring stamps if they are visible.
- For packaging, photograph the front, back, spine, barcode, and inserts. Keep loose inserts associated with the item in your notes, but do not assume they originally belonged together.
- Include close-ups of small serials, product codes, region marks, version numbers, and publisher or developer names. A magnifier can help with tiny disc-ring stamps.
Record the words and numbers in a plain text note as well as in photographs. Do not post scans that expose a serial key or registration code; those are not needed to identify a title and may be sensitive.

- PERFECT GIFT FOR THE ELDERLY: Great magnifier for seniors, Most elderly have difficulty reading the small print on coupons, prescription, medical bottle.clear magnifier with light also a great choice for those who have low or impaired vision of most types.
- Object type: cartridge, optical disc, package, or loose insert
- Platform markings and any platform logo
- Exact title text, including foreign-language or regional title text
- Publisher and developer names, if present
- Serial, product code, barcode, and version or revision text
- Region and language markings
- Visible condition or unusual features, described neutrally
- Photograph filenames and where each image was taken on the object
Keep observations separate from conclusions. For example, write “handwritten title on a plain label” rather than “prototype label.” A neutral record makes it easier to assess evidence later.
Establish the likely platform and media
Use the cartridge connector, disc format, and case as initial clues, then check them against logos and printed markings. A familiar-looking shell or generic case is not enough to identify a particular game or release: similar physical formats can contain or package different titles.
First look for a platform logo or name on the item or its packaging. Next, compare that with the medium itself and any serial or product code. If the packaging and item appear inconsistent, record the mismatch rather than choosing one as correct. The object, its package, and any loose inserts may not be a matching set.
What the visible clues can tell you
| Clue | Useful for | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Platform logo or name | Narrowing the likely system or release family | That the cartridge or disc is an original copy or a specific revision |
| Title text | Searching by exact title, including regional or foreign titles | That the text identifies the contents of a loose or relabeled item |
| Serial or product code | Finding and comparing catalog entries | That a candidate record describes this exact physical copy |
| Region and language marks | Distinguishing regional packaging or releases | That every other detail, such as revision or contents, is identical |
| Barcode and packaging | Comparing a packaged release with catalog information | That a loose medium belongs with the packaging |
| Disc inner-ring stamp | Adding a distinguishing disc detail where visible | Title identification without other matching evidence |
Search catalogs using the strongest identifier
Once you have a platform and one or more exact identifiers, search preservation and release catalogs. Search by the clearest serial or product code first, then by the exact title and any regional or foreign title. If the first query returns nothing, try the title without punctuation or search a legible code separately; keep the original transcription in your notes so that a normalized search does not replace what is actually printed.

For optical discs
Redump is a disc-preservation lookup source. Search by title, foreign title, or disc serial. If a verified dump exists for the disc, its hash can also help compare the digital contents with a catalog record. A hash is a comparison aid for a verified dump, not a visual identifier for the physical disc; do not claim a match from the printed label alone.
A search result is only a candidate. Redump cautions that even when a disc search finds a record, the specific disc in hand may be a revision or a new disc. Compare the physical details and disc-specific markings before describing it as a confirmed match.
For cartridges and ROM-oriented cataloging
No-Intro provides an online database and DAT resources useful for cross-checking cartridge-oriented ROM and digital-game information. Search using the platform, title, and visible product identifiers where available. A catalog entry can help narrow the possibilities, but it should not be treated as proof that a physical cartridge has the same contents or revision.
For release and package details
MobyGames can support release cataloging and verification. Use it to compare title, platform, publisher, region, and package information, while keeping the physical observations distinct from catalog descriptions. Its cataloging standards emphasize verifiable information and distinguish media details; that is a useful model for recording what you can actually see.

Compare candidate releases field by field
If several records look plausible, do not select the first title that resembles the label. Compare each candidate across the same set of fields and note both matches and conflicts. The more specific identifiers are generally more useful for distinguishing releases than a broad resemblance in title or packaging.
| Compare | Questions to check |
|---|---|
| Platform and medium | Does the record describe the same platform and physical medium as the item? |
| Title | Does the exact title match, or is the record for a regional or foreign title? |
| Serial or product code | Does the code match character for character? Could a similar code belong to another release? |
| Region and language | Do the marks on the object and package agree with the record? |
| Version or revision | Does the item show a version, revision, or other distinction absent from the candidate? |
| Barcode and package | Do the barcode and package details correspond, and are they physically associated with the medium? |
| Disc inner-ring codes | Are the stamps consistent with the candidate, including any small markings on either side? |
| Record’s media description | Does the catalog entry describe the same kind of physical medium rather than only a related release? |
Use confidence labels that reflect the evidence. “Possible match” means one or more broad clues fit. “Likely match” means the strongest visible identifiers and release details agree, with no unexplained conflict. Reserve “confirmed” for cases where the relevant physical and catalog evidence has been checked and there is no unresolved discrepancy. If you cannot establish a detail from the object or a reliable record, leave it unknown rather than filling it in from assumption.
Read disc markings without overinterpreting them
The disc serial is usually printed on the disc and is a useful search term. Also inspect the inner ring for small stamped codes. Record stamps on both sides when visible; they can distinguish discs that otherwise appear similar. A handheld magnifier is an optional aid for reading very small marks, but it does not identify the title on its own.

Do not scrape, polish, or alter a disc to make a faint code easier to read. If a stamp is not legible, record that limitation and photograph it under clear lighting rather than guessing at characters.
Assess a possible prototype cautiously
A blank or altered label, marker writing, an unusual shell, or an unfamiliar board is an observation—not proof of prototype provenance. Odd appearance can justify further investigation, but it does not establish when, by whom, or for what purpose the item was made.
Build a case from corroborating evidence
- Describe the physical features precisely and photograph them before handling or opening the item further.
- Record every visible identifier, including marks that differ from a cataloged retail release.
- Look for reliable documentation that connects the item’s specific identifiers or physical characteristics to a prototype or development build.
- Consider provenance: document how the item was obtained and preserve any accompanying records, while distinguishing an account from independently verifiable evidence.
- Ask an experienced specialist to assess the object when the evidence is outside your expertise. Provide clear photographs and transcriptions rather than altering the item to expose more details.
There is no universal visual test established here for proving prototype status. If you have only an unusual label, shell, or board, describe those features and say that prototype status is unverified. Stronger language needs corroboration from reliable documentation or provenance.

Handle uncertainty and common identification problems
No catalog result appears
Recheck the transcription against your photographs, including characters that can be confused in small print. Search the exact title, regional or foreign title, and serial or product code separately. A missing result does not identify the object as a prototype; catalog coverage can be incomplete, and database contents can change.

Several releases share a title
Use platform, serial, region, language, version, barcode, and packaging details to narrow the candidates. A title match alone is weak when multiple releases or revisions are possible. Keep a short comparison note for each candidate and retain any mismatches rather than ignoring them.
The package and medium disagree
Photograph both, record which marks appear on each, and avoid assuming the package belongs to the loose item. Compare the medium and package independently with catalog records. If the connection between them cannot be established, identify the medium separately and describe the packaging as associated but unverified.
A disc looks like a match but its revision is uncertain
Check the printed serial, inner-ring stamps on both sides, and any confirmed version information. If the catalog match still leaves a revision or new-disc possibility unresolved, call it a likely title or release match—not an exact confirmed copy.

A cartridge is unfamiliar or appears modified
Record the shell, label, platform marks, product codes, and any visible board markings without treating any one unusual feature as conclusive. Search the identifiers and compare catalog details. If opening it would be necessary to inspect a board, avoid forcing the shell; seek qualified help if you do not know how to open that format safely.
Keep the identification record useful
When you share or archive your findings, include the photographs, exact transcriptions, catalog candidates checked, and the reason you accepted or rejected each candidate. Mark which statements are direct observations and which are interpretations. This makes it possible for someone else to review the identification without confusing a catalog match with proof about the physical object.
Database records may be incomplete or change over time, so include the database name and the date you checked it in your own notes. If a future catalog update supplies a matching serial, code, or revision detail, you can revisit the conclusion without losing the original evidence.
