Do not clean the coin to identify it. Preserve the patina, corrosion and deposits, then work from photographs, visible design details, cautious legend transcription, measurements and comparison with reliable catalogue records. This can produce a sensible tentative attribution without proving authenticity, market value, ownership history or legal status.

Why identification should come before any treatment

An ancient coin is identified by the combination of its surviving evidence: portrait or issuing authority, legend, reverse design, mint or field marks, denomination clues, metal, dimensions, weight and sometimes die axis. Removing material can destroy one or more of those clues.

Corrosion is not merely dirt. It may hide details, protect the metal beneath it or contain salts that continue to drive corrosion after excavation. Colour alone is also unreliable for identifying a metal or a coin type. The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) warns that scratching through corrosion can permanently mark an object and states: “In general, removing corrosion from the surface of a coin should be left to a conservator.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identification and conservation are separate decisions. A conservator may eventually recommend treatment because the object is unstable; that is not a reason to polish, scrape or chemically clean it while you are still trying to determine what it is.

Should I clean it before identifying?

Generally, no. Do not polish, scrape, soak, brush aggressively or apply household acids, oils, solvents or commercial metal cleaners. Do not lift deposits with a needle or try to expose a “better” metal colour. These actions can remove original surface, leave scratches, loosen flaking material and erase letters or design details that are already weak.

If the coin is damp, freshly excavated, actively flaking or shedding powder, stop handling it except when necessary to place it safely. Ask a conservator or archaeological finds specialist for handling and stabilization advice. Inappropriate handling of archaeological metal can cause irreparable damage.

Step 1: Handle the coin without adding damage

Use the edge and a stable work area

Work over a clean, uncluttered surface where the coin cannot fall onto a hard floor. Hold it by the edge whenever possible and avoid touching either face. Keep food, drinks, grit and loose metal tools away from the work area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose gloves for the object, not by habit

The CCI recommends clean, well-fitting cotton or plastic gloves for metal objects. For silver coins it specifically recommends cotton gloves because sulphur in latex can tarnish silver. Gloves that are too loose can make a small coin slip, so fit and control matter.

A fragile archaeological coin is an exception to simplistic glove rules. If a conservator has instructed you to use controlled bare-hand edge handling, follow that advice; some gloves can catch on lifting surfaces or reduce tactile control. Never handle the faces with bare fingers merely to improve grip.

Step 2: Document everything before interpreting it

Photograph both faces

Make a record before searching for a match. Photograph the obverse and reverse separately, and add a scale in the image if possible. Use even, diffuse light first so the overall design and surface condition are clear. Take additional photographs with low-angle, or raking, light from different directions; shallow relief and worn letters can appear more legible when the light skims across them.

Do not label a side “obverse” or “reverse” as a fact if you are unsure. Record which side you are calling which and mark the uncertainty. Keep the original image files and note the date, camera or phone used and any lighting arrangement that makes a particular detail visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preserve labels and provenance as claims, not proof

Record tickets, envelopes, collection labels, acquisition notes and any story that came with the coin. Copy the wording accurately, including uncertainty or spelling errors. An old label may be useful evidence about the object’s history, but it is not automatically a verified attribution or legal provenance.

Set a consistent orientation

For each face, choose a repeatable orientation—such as the portrait upright or the main figure standing—and photograph it that way. If you later rotate the coin to read a legend, keep a second image showing the original orientation. Orientation helps you compare the coin with catalogue photographs rather than relying on memory.

Step 3: Inspect without touching the surface

Read the portrait and reverse together

Start with what is visible, not with a guessed ruler’s name. On the portrait side, note whether the head faces left, right or another direction; whether it is bare, helmeted, diademed, laureate or wearing another headdress; and whether clothing, armour, a beard, a neck truncation or an accompanying symbol survives.

On the other side, describe the complete design before trying to identify it: a standing, seated or riding figure; an animal; a deity’s attribute; a building; a ship; a wreath; a weapon; a plant; a trophy; a monogram; or a plain inscription. Record the border, dots, pellets and any apparent exergue or line beneath the design.

Use magnification as an aid

A basic 10x jeweller’s loupe or hand magnifier can help inspect worn lettering and small marks. Hold it above the coin without allowing its rim to touch the surface. Magnification reveals what is present; it cannot restore letters that have been worn away and cannot authenticate a coin.

Inspect the edge only when it is safe

Look at the edge for shape, lettering, seams, breaks, clipping or a different surface texture, but do not force the coin into a tight holder or clamp. Turn it slowly between your fingers by the edge. If flakes or powder detach, stop and seek conservation advice.

Ask, “What is this made of?”

Describe the apparent metal and surface condition separately. Note a silver-coloured, copper-coloured, yellow or dark appearance, but treat colour as an observation rather than an identification. Record whether the surface has stable dark patina, green corrosion, red or orange corrosion, chalky deposits, black patches, exposed bright metal or areas that are lifting. None of these observations, by itself, establishes the alloy or period.

How do I identify an ancient coin from its portrait and lettering?

Use a layered description. First identify the broad visual family, then test every surviving feature against candidate records.

Describe the issuing authority or portrait

Write a neutral description such as “right-facing male bust with a laurel-like headband” rather than immediately writing a ruler’s name. If a portrait has distinctive attributes, list them separately: diadem, helmet, horn, beard, armour, mantle, radiate crown or an object held near the shoulder.

Transcribe only what you can see

Turn the coin under raking light and read one character at a time. Write visible letters in order, retain gaps and mark uncertain characters with brackets or question marks. For example, a working note might preserve a sequence as ...ΑΥ... ? ... rather than silently expanding it into a complete name. If a character could be E or C, record that ambiguity. Do not complete a worn legend merely because one candidate seems familiar.

Separate legend zones

Note whether a fragment is around the portrait, in the reverse field, below the design or inside a wreath. A few identical letters can mean different things depending on their position. Record punctuation, ligatures, monograms and letters that appear upside down relative to your chosen orientation.

Compare the design, not just the text

A partial legend can fit many issuers. Compare the portrait style, reverse figure or object, border, marks and legend placement at the same time. A candidate that matches two letters but has the wrong reverse or mint mark is weak, even if its name looks plausible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Measure only when measurement is safe

Measurements narrow a list of candidates; they do not identify a coin independently. Record the values and the conditions under which you obtained them.

Observation How to record it What it can and cannot do
Diameter Measure in millimetres, noting whether the flan is irregular and whether you measured the longest dimension. Helps compare likely denominations and module sizes; overlap between types is common.
Mass Record grams to the precision your scale can support. Note whether dirt, deposits or a fragment may affect the reading. Tests a denomination hypothesis; wear, corrosion, clipping and deposits can change the weight.
Die axis For a Roman-coin reference, record the rotation from the portrait side to the reverse side using a clock-face or degree notation. Can support a comparison with catalogue records; it is not a stand-alone identification.
Edge Describe smoothness, lettering, seams, cracks or irregular casting-like texture without scraping. Adds comparative evidence and may raise authenticity questions; it does not prove genuineness.

Measure without rubbing the coin

Use a scale that can hold the coin securely without sliding. If you use calipers, do not tighten them against a fragile or corroded edge; a loose measurement is safer than a precise one that abrades the surface. Never place a flaking coin in a tight caliper or holder. If measurement itself risks damage, leave the field unmeasured and state why.

Step 5: Build and test candidate attributions

Search using the full feature combination rather than a single colour, letter or portrait. Museum databases, established numismatic catalogues and illustrated specialist references are more useful than an uncaptioned social-media photograph.

Feature to compare Questions to ask
Issuer and portrait Does the head direction, headdress, clothing, beard and bust length agree?
Legend Do the visible letters occur in the same order and location, with the same gaps or ligatures?
Reverse Is the figure, animal, object, stance and orientation the same?
Marks Do field symbols, monograms, mint marks or exergual letters match?
Denomination and material Are the apparent metal, diameter and mass plausible for the proposed type?
Die axis and fabric For references that report them, do axis, flan shape and striking characteristics agree?
Photographic match Does a securely attributed specimen show the same details, not merely a similar theme?

Use Roman references appropriately

For a possible Roman coin, standard catalogues such as Roman Imperial Coinage (RIC) can help organize candidates. Treat a catalogue number as a conclusion only after the portrait, legend, reverse, marks, material and measurements all cohere. A verbal description that says “looks like” a particular emperor is not enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep conflicting evidence visible

If the portrait and reverse fit but the weight is outside the normal range, retain the candidate as possible or probable and record the conflict. If the legend appears to contradict the portrait, do not force a match. A broad attribution—such as a region or period—can be more accurate than a precise ruler and denomination unsupported by the surviving evidence.

What surface clues can—and cannot—tell you about authenticity

Identification asks, “What type could this be?” Authentication asks, “Is this an ancient, genuine example rather than a modern imitation?” They require different evidence.

A casting seam, bubbly surface, absent or implausible patina, or modern-looking lettering may justify further examination. None is conclusive in isolation. Similar broad appearances can occur across different periods and coinages, and genuine coins can have unusual surfaces after burial or later treatment.

Do not clean a suspected fake to look for a seam, and do not drill, file, scratch or apply a destructive metal test. When authenticity or value matters, consult an experienced ancient-coin specialist or a recognized numismatic organization. Specialist laboratories may use non-destructive methods such as X-ray energy spectrometry, but that is professional analysis, not a home test.

Step 6: State your conclusion with calibrated confidence

Write the result in three parts:

  1. Observed: list the portrait, reverse, visible legend fragments, marks, apparent material, diameter, mass, die axis if recorded and surface condition.
  2. Inferred: name the strongest candidate and explain which features support it.
  3. Unresolved: identify missing letters, conflicting measurements, uncertain orientation or details hidden by corrosion.

Use “possible” when one or more broad features fit, “probable” when most diagnostic features agree, and a precise type only when the evidence is unusually complete. A reference match does not establish authenticity, ownership history, legal status or market value.

When to stop and call a professional

  • Conservator: the coin is damp, actively corroding, powdery, flaking, freshly excavated or in need of treatment.
  • Ancient-coin specialist: the coin may be valuable, the attribution affects a purchase or sale, or authenticity is disputed.
  • Archaeological finds specialist: the object may have been recently found in the ground and its handling, reporting or legal status is uncertain.
  • Specialist analytical service: a documented material question remains after visual examination and non-destructive professional testing is appropriate.

Send clear photographs of both faces and edge, your measurements, the exact transcription including uncertain characters, and any provenance notes. Do not send a newly cleaned or altered surface and expect the specialist to reconstruct what was removed.

Common mistakes and safer alternatives

Mistake Why it fails Safer alternative
Scraping green or black deposits Can scratch the coin, remove original surface and expose salts. Photograph the deposit under diffuse and raking light; leave treatment to a conservator.
Guessing the ruler from one letter Short legends and worn characters create many false matches. Transcribe the entire visible sequence with gaps and uncertainty marks.
Using colour as the metal test Patina, corrosion and lighting change apparent colour. Record colour as a clue, then compare all features and seek specialist analysis if needed.
Clamping a fragile flan for measurement Pressure can crush lifted corrosion or abrade the edge. Use a non-contact or gentle measurement method, or omit the measurement.
Treating a label as verified provenance Labels can be copied, changed or wrong. Preserve the label’s wording and identify it as an unverified historical claim.
Calling a catalogue match proof of genuineness Modern copies can imitate a published type. Separate type attribution from authentication and obtain specialist advice.

A non-invasive recording sheet

Keep one record with the coin so another person can reproduce your observations:

  • Inventory or temporary reference number.
  • Date photographed and measured.
  • Obverse and reverse images, plus edge images and a scale.
  • Chosen orientation and whether each side is confidently identified.
  • Portrait direction, headdress, clothing and bust details.
  • Reverse subject, stance, attributes, border and exergue.
  • Every visible legend character, with gaps, brackets or question marks.
  • Field marks, monograms, mint marks and edge observations.
  • Apparent material and condition, described without treating colour as proof.
  • Diameter in millimetres, mass in grams and Roman die axis if safely obtained.
  • Candidate references, supporting matches and unresolved conflicts.
  • Confidence level: possible, probable or precise only where justified.

The practical boundary of a first-pass identification

You can often narrow an ancient coin to a likely culture, period, issuer, denomination or catalogue family without altering it. The reliable method is deliberately conservative: preserve the surface, record both sides, inspect under controlled light, transcribe uncertainty, measure gently and compare the complete feature set with illustrated references.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The result should remain a documented hypothesis until a qualified specialist confirms the type and, when necessary, assesses conservation, authenticity, provenance and value separately.
