The reliable way to identify in-demand AI skills is to analyze dated job postings for a defined role, market, seniority level, and time period, then check whether the same patterns recur across independent employers and official labor-market evidence. A keyword that appears in one viral vacancy or a single employer’s listings is a lead, not proof of a durable market. Separate skills for building AI systems from skills for using AI safely in broader technology work, and record whether each skill is required, preferred, or merely mentioned.
This approach answers two different questions: “Which AI skills are employers asking for?” and “Is that demand broad and persistent enough to justify learning?” The distinction matters because job advertisements show what employers state in a particular dataset; they do not, by themselves, establish a universal ranking, a lasting shortage, or a guaranteed hiring outcome.
Define what “in demand” means before counting skills
Demand changes with the role, sector, geography, seniority, and date. A machine-learning engineer vacancy and a help-desk analyst vacancy may both mention AI but require very different capabilities. Start by fixing the boundaries of your comparison:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Market: specify a country, region, or labor market rather than combining postings worldwide.
- Occupation: choose a role family such as software development, data engineering, cybersecurity, product management, or IT support.
- Seniority: keep entry-level, mid-career, and lead roles separate; requirements often rise sharply with responsibility.
- Time window: use a clearly stated period, such as postings collected between January and June 2026.
- Evidence threshold: decide how many independent employers and how many observations are needed before you call a pattern strong.
Use “in demand” to mean that a skill appears repeatedly across independent employers and remains visible across more than one time slice, ideally with support from an official report or employer survey. Use “emerging” when the signal is recent, concentrated, or not yet corroborated. Use “specialist” for skills required to build or operate AI systems, and “AI-enabled” for capabilities that help people in many technology jobs use AI productively and responsibly.

Separate specialist AI work from AI-enabled technology work
One global list of “AI skills” is misleading because exposure to AI does not imply that every worker must become a machine-learning specialist. The OECD’s 2024 analysis concludes that most workers exposed to AI will not need specialized skills such as machine learning or natural-language processing. In highly AI-exposed occupations, management and business skills are among the most demanded capabilities. Read the OECD analysis published 10 April 2024 for the underlying methodology and occupational comparisons.
For technology careers, ask which of these two markets a posting belongs to:
| Market | Typical work | Skills to look for | How to interpret demand |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI-system builders | Designing, training, evaluating, deploying, or monitoring models and data pipelines | Machine learning, deep learning, natural-language processing, model evaluation, data engineering, software engineering, cloud and platform operations | Usually concentrated in specialist teams and certain industries; depth, production experience, and system reliability matter. |
| AI-enabled technology roles | Using AI tools in software, operations, analysis, security, product, support, or management work | AI literacy, workflow design, data interpretation, automation, verification, privacy, security, communication, problem solving, and domain knowledge | Broader occupational reach; postings may describe safe and effective use rather than model development. |
The OECD’s analysis of vacancies in Canada, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States found that communication, problem solving, creativity, and teamwork gained relative importance alongside software and AI-specific competencies. That four-country study, published in 2021, is trend evidence rather than a current ranking; its methods and limits are described in Demand for AI skills in jobs: Evidence from online job postings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse five transparent skill categories
Normalize wording without erasing meaningful differences. For example, “model monitoring” and “model training” should not be collapsed into one generic machine-learning bucket. Keep your raw wording and map each phrase to a category using rules that another person could reproduce.
| Category | Examples of phrases to group | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| AI and machine-learning development | Model training, deep learning, natural-language processing, computer vision, fine-tuning, evaluation, retrieval-augmented generation, inference optimization | Is the employer asking for production ownership, research depth, or familiarity with a tool? |
| Data analysis and engineering | Data modeling, SQL, experimentation, statistics, feature engineering, data pipelines, governance, quality checks | Does the role prepare data for AI, analyze business outcomes, or operate both? |
| Software, platform, and operations | APIs, testing, version control, containers, cloud infrastructure, observability, security, CI/CD, distributed systems | Is the skill an AI-specific requirement or a general engineering foundation needed to ship reliable systems? |
| AI tool use and literacy | Prompt and workflow design, evaluating generated output, selecting tools, automation, documentation, privacy-aware use | Is AI use a core duty, a productivity expectation, or a preferred qualification? |
| Human, business, governance, and ethical capabilities | Communication, teamwork, product judgment, risk management, compliance, responsible AI, stakeholder training | Does the posting connect the capability to decisions, controls, or customer outcomes? |
Record the exact phrase, its category, and whether it is listed as a required qualification, preferred qualification, responsibility, or benefit. “Experience with” is weaker evidence than “must build and maintain,” even when both contain the same keyword.
What large-scale evidence says about current patterns
Official studies are useful for checking whether your local posting sample fits a broader pattern. They use different populations and periods, so never combine their percentages as though they measured the same thing.

| European Union report, published 2025; ICT online job advertisements from 2020–2023 | 62% of AI-related advertisements were in software and applications developer and analyst occupations. AI/ML engineering appeared in almost one-third of AI-profile advertisements; four named AI profiles together represented 98% of job descriptions referring to AI roles. | Shows concentration within the studied ICT advertisements, not a live 2026 vacancy count or a ranking for every country. The report also compares education and training information from 2024–2025, which is a different time window. |
| UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology commissioned AI Labour Market Survey; survey concerns 2025 and executive summary published 28 January 2026 | 97% of respondents identified at least one AI labour-market skills gap; 57% of surveyed businesses reported a technical gap, 30% reported a non-technical gap, and 35% of surveyed organisations struggled to fill AI roles. | These are UK survey findings from respondents, businesses, and organisations in that study. They are not a global measure of technology-job demand. The executive summary notes that the commissioned researchers’ findings and recommendations are not government policy. |
| OECD, 10 April 2024 | In highly AI-exposed occupations, management and business skills are among the most demanded. The share of vacancies in those occupations asking for at least one emotional, cognitive, or digital skill increased by 8 percentage points. | Supports the importance of complementary capabilities; it does not provide a universal list of technical tools to learn. |
| International Labour Organization, 13 August 2026 | Frames demand around cognitive, socioemotional, digital, data-science, and AI skills, and describes understanding and using AI safely and ethically as a foundational skill. | Useful for defining broad capability areas, not for a particular frequency ranking in technology postings. |
| Federal Reserve, 27 March 2026 | Using job postings and a business survey, the note finds that AI-skill demand has shifted since 2015 from a concentration in computer and mathematical occupations toward a broader set of occupations. | Indicates wider occupational reach. The note calls the labor-market impact evidence early, warns that posting aggregates can hide hardship in particular occupations, and notes limits in comparing postings across a long period; it does not infer wage outcomes from postings. |
Step-by-step: measure demand in your target market
1. Write a narrow research question
Use a sentence such as: “Which skills appeared in at least 20 distinct mid-level data-engineering vacancies in the United Kingdom between January and June 2026, and which were marked required?” A narrow question prevents a high-volume role from drowning out a niche role and makes your conclusion auditable.
2. Build a balanced posting sample
Collect recent advertisements from multiple employers and sources. For every posting, save the publication date, employer, location, work arrangement, seniority, role title, sector, and URL. Include enough employers to detect concentration; ten postings from one large organization are not equivalent to ten independent employers.
Remove obvious duplicates, syndicated copies, and continuously refreshed advertisements where possible. If a vacancy has no reliable date, place it in a separate “undated” group rather than mixing it with dated evidence.
3. Preserve the original language
Copy each skill phrase exactly into a worksheet before normalizing it. Add columns for category, required or preferred status, years of experience, and the duty associated with the phrase. This lets you distinguish “Python required for production services” from “exposure to Python preferred.”
4. Create and publish your grouping rules
Define synonyms before counting. You might map “LLM evaluation,” “generative-AI evaluation,” and “model quality assessment” to an evaluation subgroup while keeping “prompt engineering” separate. Keep a phrase in more than one subgroup only when the posting clearly assigns different duties; otherwise you inflate the apparent demand.

5. Compare across employers and role families
Calculate the share of independent employers mentioning each category, not just the total number of advertisements. Then split the result by role, seniority, sector, and location. A category present in 70% of employers but only as a preferred item is a different signal from one present in 45% as a required production duty.

- 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.
Mark concentration explicitly. If one sector contributes most observations, report the sector rather than calling the pattern universal. Check whether a skill appears across at least two time slices; a one-week spike may reflect a hiring campaign or a single project.
6. Triangulate with independent evidence
Compare your table with official labor-market reports and employer surveys while preserving each source’s geography, sample, and period. A pattern repeated in postings, an official analysis, and a survey is stronger than a pattern found in one source. A disagreement is informative: it may indicate a local shortage, a lag between training and hiring, or different definitions of “AI skill.”
7. Turn the strongest signal into a role-specific plan
Choose a small set of capabilities that recur in your target role and appear as substantive duties. Build evidence for each through a project, work sample, documented experiment, or contribution that shows outcomes and constraints. Do not simply repeat the employer’s keywords in a résumé without demonstrating what you built, measured, secured, or improved.

Interpret demand by technology role
Software and applications development
Look for the intersection of software fundamentals and AI integration: service design, APIs, testing, version control, data handling, model or service evaluation, and operational monitoring. A posting that asks for AI feature delivery may value reliable engineering and user-impact measurement more than theoretical model research. The EU analysis found that 62% of AI-related advertisements in its 2020–2023 ICT dataset were in software and applications developer and analyst occupations, so this is a major cluster—but not a guarantee that every software vacancy is AI-focused.
AI and machine-learning engineering
Separate experimentation from production. Stronger signals include responsibility for training or fine-tuning, evaluation datasets, latency and cost constraints, deployment, monitoring, and incident response. “AI/ML engineering” appeared in almost one-third of AI-profile advertisements in the EU report’s dataset; the figure describes those advertisements, not all technology jobs in 2026.
Data analysis and data science
Track statistics, experimentation, SQL, data visualization, causal reasoning, and the ability to explain uncertainty. AI-enabled analysis often requires validating generated results, detecting data-quality problems, and translating findings for non-specialists. A role that mentions a model library but lacks data-quality or evaluation duties may be seeking tool familiarity rather than end-to-end analytical capability.

Data engineering and platform operations
Look for ingestion, transformation, orchestration, data contracts, lineage, access controls, and reliability. AI systems depend on repeatable pipelines and governed data; postings may emphasize these foundations without using the word “AI” repeatedly. Distinguish a platform role that serves many teams from a model-serving role with specialized inference or monitoring duties.
Cybersecurity, infrastructure, and operations
Classify AI requirements alongside identity, secure configuration, observability, incident response, and risk controls. AI may appear as an automation tool, a system to secure, or a source of new attack surfaces. Demand is stronger when the posting specifies measurable responsibilities—such as detecting abuse, protecting sensitive inputs, or validating automated actions—rather than a generic statement that the candidate should be “interested in AI.”
Product, project, and technology management
For these roles, management and business capabilities can be more predictive than model-building depth. Look for problem framing, prioritization, experimentation, vendor or stakeholder coordination, risk assessment, and the ability to decide when AI is inappropriate. The OECD’s 2024 findings specifically place management and business skills among the most demanded in highly AI-exposed occupations.
IT support and other broad technology roles
Measure AI literacy as applied work: using approved tools, checking outputs, protecting confidential information, documenting decisions, and escalating failures. The ILO’s 2026 synthesis treats safe and ethical AI use as a foundational skill, while the OECD’s evidence highlights communication, teamwork, creativity, and problem solving. These capabilities can be valuable even when a role never asks for machine-learning development.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a scoring framework without pretending it is a universal index
No source defines one validated score for AI-skill demand. You can still make decisions transparently by rating each category on separate axes rather than hiding judgment in one number.
| Axis | Suggested question | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Role relevance | How directly does the skill support the target role’s core duties? | High relevance means the skill appears in responsibilities, not only in a generic requirements list. |
| Employer breadth | What percentage of independent employers mention it? | Higher breadth reduces the chance that one employer dominates the result. |
| Required status | Is it required, preferred, or optional? | Required phrases usually indicate a stronger hiring filter, but can also reflect poor specification. |
| Persistence | Does it recur across two or more time periods? | Persistence is stronger evidence than a short-lived spike. |
| Geographic and sector spread | Does it appear outside one city, industry, or employer type? | Concentration may be a worthwhile niche, but should not be marketed as universal demand. |
| Specialist versus generalist reach | Is it needed to build AI systems or to use AI in many jobs? | Use this to choose depth, breadth, or a combination of both. |
Report the counts behind every conclusion. For example: “Eight of 15 independent employers required data-pipeline experience; 11 mentioned it in any form; the sample covered two six-month periods.” That statement is more useful than “data engineering is hot” because a reader can see the denominator and the qualification.

Convert evidence into a learning and portfolio plan
For a specialist path
- Establish foundations: programming, data structures, statistics, data management, software testing, and version control.
- Choose one model domain: for example, language, vision, forecasting, or recommendation systems, based on repeated requirements in your target postings.
- Learn the production layer: data pipelines, evaluation design, deployment, monitoring, security, and cost or latency trade-offs.
- Build a complete work sample: document the data source, assumptions, baseline, metrics, error analysis, safety considerations, and operating limits.
- Explain decisions: include a short technical report and a plain-language summary showing communication and business judgment.
For an AI-enabled generalist path
- Map AI to your existing workflow: identify tasks where drafting, classification, search, analysis, or automation could help.
- Define verification: specify accuracy checks, human review, escalation rules, and what data must never enter an external tool.
- Measure an outcome: track time saved, error reduction, response quality, or another relevant metric without overstating causality.
- Document governance: record approved tools, access controls, privacy decisions, and how users are trained.
- Show collaboration: demonstrate how you gathered requirements, handled disagreement, and communicated limitations.
This evidence makes a résumé claim credible. “Used AI” is vague; “designed a documented review workflow that reduced manual triage time while requiring human approval for sensitive cases” communicates scope, controls, and outcome without claiming an unsupported benchmark.
Common ways demand analysis goes wrong
- Counting advertisements instead of employers: repeated listings from one organization can create a false impression of broad demand.
- Mixing dates: combining 2020 postings with 2026 vacancies hides whether a skill is persistent or historical.
- Treating a keyword as a capability: a tool name may be optional, obsolete, or included by a recruiter who does not define the work.
- Collapsing distinct skills: prompt design, model evaluation, data engineering, and machine-learning research have different learning paths.
- Ignoring non-technical requirements: communication, teamwork, creativity, problem solving, management, and business judgment may determine whether a technical solution is adopted.
- Generalizing across geography: a UK survey result, an EU posting analysis, and a US-focused note cannot be treated as one global sample.
- Reading shortages as guarantees: the UK survey’s 35% difficulty-filling figure describes surveyed organisations; it does not promise that any individual applicant will find a role.
- Assuming posting growth proves better pay: the Federal Reserve note cautions about posting comparability and does not infer wage outcomes from advertisements.
- Building only a toy demonstration: employers often need reliability, security, data quality, monitoring, and stakeholder communication, not just a model that works once.
Refresh the analysis as the market changes
Set a review cadence appropriate to your target market—quarterly for a fast-changing specialist niche or every six months for a broader role family. Keep archived snapshots so you can see whether a phrase is genuinely persistent. When a new term appears, first record it verbatim, then decide whether it is a new capability or a renamed version of an existing one.
Interpret changes cautiously. The Federal Reserve reports that AI-skill demand has moved from a concentration in computer and mathematical occupations toward a broader set of occupations since 2015, but also emphasizes that labor-market impact research is early and that aggregate posting results do not rule out hardship in particular occupations. A broader spread of postings means more roles mention AI; it does not mean every role requires advanced model development.
A practical decision rule
Prioritize an AI skill when it is relevant to your target role, appears across several independent employers, is requested as a substantive responsibility, recurs across time windows, and fits evidence from an official source or well-described survey. Treat a skill as a niche bet when it is technically deep but concentrated in one sector or location. Treat it as a general capability when it supports safe, effective work across many roles, even if postings use inconsistent wording.
The result should be a role-specific shortlist—not a universal top-ten ranking. By preserving dates, denominators, geography, seniority, and requirement status, you can tell the difference between a durable hiring signal, a specialized opportunity, and a fashionable keyword.
