From a safe distance, look for two features together: a sharply divided dark upper body over a bright yellow underside, and a vertically flattened, paddle-shaped tail marked with dark spots or bars. Those clues can suggest a yellow-bellied sea snake, but they do not replace expert identification. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) labels the animal venomous and gives the instruction Venomous: Avoid handling
. If the snake is stranded, keep away and contact a local wildlife authority or wildlife-rescue service rather than trying to lift or return it to the water.
The quickest visual checklist
Do not move closer to inspect a suspected sea snake. If you can see it from your existing position, check these features in order:
- Upper body: dark charcoal, brown, or black.
- Lower body: bright yellow or yellowish, with a sharp visual boundary between the dark upper side and the yellow underside.
- Tail: flattened vertically into a paddle shape, yellow with dark spots or bars; the tail region may show stronger vertical yellow patterning.
- Head and build: a moderately built snake with an elongated head that is visibly distinct from the body.
- Context: a location within the species’ broad Indian and Pacific Ocean range makes a sighting more plausible, but geography cannot prove an identification.
A color pattern is a field clue, not a complete diagnostic key. Lighting, distance, water movement, life stage, regional variation, and similar-looking sea snakes can all reduce confidence. Treat an uncertain sighting as potentially venomous.
What the body pattern should look like
A dark upper half over a yellow lower half
The most useful clue is the contrast across the body. DOC and the Australian Museum describe the upper side as dark charcoal, brown, or black and the underside as bright yellow. The division is conspicuous rather than a gradual blend: the dark upper area appears sharply set off from the yellow lower area.

Because a swimming snake may roll, dive, or be partly submerged, you might see only one side at a time. A dark-looking animal is not enough by itself. Wait for a safe, unobstructed view from where you already are and look for the combination of dark upper coloration and yellow lower coloration. Never enter the water, lean over a ledge, or approach a shoreline animal to expose its underside.
Do not overread color in poor conditions
Sun glare, shade, turbid water, wet skin, and distance can make yellow appear pale or white and dark brown appear black. A brief glimpse may also show only the back. If the boundary is not clear, record the identification as uncertain rather than trying to confirm it by getting closer.
How to recognize the tail
The paddle shape
The tail is flattened vertically, giving it a paddle-like profile adapted to swimming. This is different from a typical cylindrical snake tail that tapers into a round point. The paddle may be easiest to see when the animal turns, changes direction, or swims away. You do not need to see the tail to remain safe; if it is hidden, stop at a tentative identification.

Descriptions from DOC and the Australian Museum characterize the tail as yellow with dark spots or bars. DOC also notes more vertical yellow patterning in the tail region. Look for the shape and the pattern together. A yellow patch somewhere near the rear of an animal is not sufficient if the tail itself does not appear flattened.

Do not attempt to trap, corner, or turn a snake to expose its tail. The tail clue is useful only when visible from a safe existing vantage point.
Head and overall build
Moderate build
The species is described as moderately built. That wording is intentionally general: body thickness changes with the animal’s size, posture, perspective, and the way water supports the body. Do not use apparent thickness as your primary test.
Elongated head distinct from the body
An elongated head that can be distinguished from the neck and body is another supporting clue. It may be difficult to see in waves or at a distance, and the head should not be examined at close range. If the head is the only feature you can make out, there is not enough information for a confident identification.
A safe, step-by-step observation method
- Stop where you are. Do not wade, swim, climb down, reach over an edge, or walk toward the animal. DOC’s safety instruction is explicit:
Venomous: Avoid handling.
- Establish a clear retreat path for yourself. Keep other people and pets away from the waterline or the animal’s location. Do not block the snake’s route.
- Use the silhouette first. From your existing position, decide whether the rear of the animal looks vertically flattened and paddle-shaped. If not visible, do not try to make it visible.
- Check the color relationship. Look for a dark charcoal, brown, or black upper side sharply divided from a yellow lower side. A single dark or yellow patch is not enough.
- Inspect the tail pattern only if it is already visible. Yellow coloration with dark spots or bars supports the identification. Keep your distance while observing.
- Note the head without approaching. An elongated head distinct from the body is consistent with the descriptions, but an indistinct head leaves the identification unresolved.
- Consider geography as context, not proof. Compare the location with the species’ broad Indian and Pacific distribution and its tropical core range. Occasional current-driven appearances in more temperate areas are reported, and occurrence is patchy.
- Stop at “possible” when evidence is incomplete. If you cannot see the defining combination, treat the animal as an unidentified sea snake and seek local expert guidance.
Optional binocular use is a practical way to enlarge a distant view without reducing the separation between you and the animal. It is an inference from the visible-feature checklist and no-handling guidance, not a tested or required equipment recommendation. Ordinary unaided observation from a safe distance is preferable to moving closer.

Feature-by-feature decision table
| Feature | What supports a tentative identification | What limits confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Body color | Dark charcoal, brown, or black upper side sharply divided from a bright yellow lower side | Only one side is visible; glare, shade, turbidity, wet skin, or distance changes apparent color |
| Tail shape | Vertically flattened, paddle-shaped tail | Tail is submerged, hidden, distant, or seen at an angle |
| Tail markings | Yellow tail with dark spots or bars; stronger vertical yellow patterning may occur toward the tail | Markings cannot be resolved safely or are obscured by movement |
| Head | Elongated head distinct from the body | Head is too small, partly submerged, or indistinct |
| Build | Moderately built body | Perspective and posture make thickness unreliable |
| Location | Indian or Pacific Ocean setting, especially within the tropical core range | Range is broad and patchy; currents can carry individuals into more temperate areas |
Scientific and common names
The accepted scientific name recorded by the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) is Hydrophis platurus. ITIS lists Pelamis platurus as a synonym. DOC’s guide uses the latter name, so both names may appear in identification material for the same animal.
Common names include yellow-bellied sea snake and pelagic sea snake. The names explain why a guide may use different wording without describing a different species. Scientific-name agreement is useful when reporting a sighting, but a name alone does not confirm what you saw.
How geography changes plausibility
DOC describes a broad Indian and Pacific Ocean distribution with a tropical core range. It also reports occasional appearances in more temperate areas driven by currents and characterizes occurrence as patchy.
Recommended Free Tools
Use location only as a plausibility check. A sighting in a known part of the range deserves attention, but range cannot identify an individual snake. Conversely, an unusual location does not make a venomous sea snake safe to approach or handle. Report an uncertain animal to the local authority that covers the location rather than trying to settle the identification yourself.

Why a photograph or color impression is not enough
The available descriptions establish a distinctive appearance, but they do not provide a photo-based key covering every lookalike, life stage, lighting condition, or regional variation. A distant image may also omit the tail or flattening that separates a sea snake from another snake-shaped object in the water.
For that reason, do not classify an animal solely because it is yellow, solely because it is dark, or solely because it was seen in the ocean. The strongest field impression comes from the combined pattern: dark upper body, sharply contrasting yellow lower body, and a flattened, marked paddle tail. If one or more of those elements cannot be evaluated, retain uncertainty.
What to do if the snake is stranded
Keep people and animals away
Apply the same no-contact rule on a beach, rock, dock, or other shore as in open water. Do not touch the head, tail, or any part of the body, and do not assume that a motionless snake is dead. Keep children, pets, and bystanders back while maintaining your own distance.

Contact the appropriate local service
The Australian Museum advises referring a stranded sea snake to a local wildlife authority or wildlife-rescue service. Tell the responder the exact location, whether the animal is in or out of the water, and that you have not handled it. Follow the local authority’s instructions rather than attempting a rescue yourself.

Do not return it to the water
The Australian Museum warns that holding some sea snakes out of water, even briefly, can injure or kill them because their bodies rely on water support to maintain even blood pressure. That is a reason not to lift, carry, drag, pour water over, or push a stranded snake back into the sea. A well-intentioned intervention can harm the animal and expose you to a venomous species.
Actions to avoid
- Do not pick up, hold, pin, prod, or move the snake.
- Do not use a stick, net, bucket, towel, or fishing gear to capture it.
- Do not approach to obtain a better view of the underside, head, or tail.
- Do not enter the water to follow it or cut off its route.
- Do not rely on apparent stillness as evidence that it is harmless or dead.
- Do not return a stranded animal to the water yourself.
- Do not describe an uncertain sighting as confirmed simply because the location seems plausible.
A compact field checklist
From a safe existing position, ask:
- Is the upper side dark charcoal, brown, or black?
- Is the lower side bright yellow, with a sharp boundary from the dark upper side?
- Does the tail, if visible without moving closer, look vertically flattened and paddle-shaped?
- Are there dark spots or bars on the yellow tail?
- Is the head elongated and distinct from the body?
- Is the location broadly compatible with an Indian or Pacific Ocean occurrence, while recognizing that the distribution is patchy?
- Can a local authority or wildlife-rescue service be contacted without anyone handling the animal?
Several “yes” answers support a tentative identification. They do not authorize approach or capture. A “no” or “cannot tell” answer means the safest description is an unidentified sea snake or marine snake, followed by a call to local experts when the animal is stranded or creating a public-safety concern.
What this guide can and cannot establish
This is a general visual guide based on descriptions from DOC, the Australian Museum, and ITIS. It is intended to help an observer recognize the main external clues without handling an animal. It is not a complete key to all sea snakes, a location-specific wildlife-response protocol, or a clinical guide to bite management.
When the visual evidence is incomplete, safety takes priority over a definitive label. The combination of a dark upper body, sharply contrasting yellow underside, and marked paddle-shaped tail is the practical clue set; distance, uncertainty, and local authority guidance determine what you should do next.
