To identify a public website’s WordPress theme, inspect its HTML and loaded assets for a /wp-content/themes/<slug>/ path, then open the corresponding theme style.css and read its header metadata. Use a general technology fingerprinting service as a second pass for the wider stack—such as the CMS, analytics, ecommerce layer, frameworks and hosting clues. Treat every result as evidence rather than proof: paths may be rewritten, assets may be bundled, a child theme may sit on top of a parent, and generic fingerprints can be wrong.

What you can and cannot learn from a public website

A visitor can often determine the theme a WordPress site declares publicly, but not everything installed behind it. The browser receives rendered HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images and response headers. Those public artifacts can reveal WordPress conventions and technology fingerprints. They do not provide privileged access to the site’s dashboard, server filesystem, private plugins or deployment configuration.

The most reliable practical answer comes from combining two kinds of evidence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Theme-specific evidence: a public theme asset path and the metadata in that theme’s main stylesheet.
  • Stack evidence: fingerprints found across HTML, JavaScript variables, headers, DOM and CSS by a broader technology detector.

These sources answer slightly different questions. Stylesheet metadata can identify the declared theme name and, when present, its parent template. A stack detector can suggest other components, but its matches depend on observable patterns and can include false positives.

The evidence hierarchy: what to trust first

Use this order when signals disagree:

  1. Read the publicly exposed theme stylesheet metadata.
  2. Check that the stylesheet belongs to the theme path used by the page you inspected.
  3. Use a technology fingerprinting result to add context about the wider stack.
  4. Report uncertainty when paths are hidden, files are inaccessible, or signals conflict.

A folder slug is only a clue. A directory named custom-theme does not establish the theme’s public or commercial name. The header in style.css is the stronger indication of what the theme declares itself to be.

Method 1: inspect the page source manually

1. Open the raw source

Load the page you want to identify, then open its raw source using the browser’s “View page source” command. Source view is preferable for this first check because it shows the HTML response rather than only the final, modified DOM.

You can also prefix the page address with view-source: in browsers that support that scheme. If the site redirects, repeat the check on the final page and record which URL you examined.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Search for WordPress markers

Use the source viewer’s find function to search for:

  • /wp-content/
  • /wp-includes/
  • generator or a WordPress generator value

These markers can suggest WordPress. Their absence does not prove the site uses another CMS. Administrators can remove generator output, rewrite directory names, proxy static files, or deliver a cached and transformed response.

3. Locate the theme directory

Search for /wp-content/themes/. A typical asset URL contains a segment such as:

/wp-content/themes/example-theme/style.css

Record the complete path, including the slug, and note the page where it appeared. Check both HTML and the URLs of loaded CSS and JavaScript files; the theme stylesheet may be referenced indirectly through a link element or a generated asset list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Distinguish a theme asset from an unrelated path

Do not stop at the first matching string. Confirm that the path is attached to a stylesheet, script, image or other resource actually requested by the page. A comment, an old cached reference or a text fragment can contain a theme-like path without representing the active design.

Look for several assets using the same theme slug. Consistent references strengthen the case that the directory is active, but they still do not reveal whether a child theme overrides parts of a parent theme.

Confirm the declaration in style.css

Why the stylesheet header matters

WordPress themes conventionally expose a main stylesheet named style.css. Its header contains metadata fields that describe the theme. When the file is publicly accessible, read the header rather than inferring identity from the directory name.

Fields commonly useful for identification include:

  • Theme Name: the name declared by the stylesheet.
  • Template: the parent theme directory used by a child theme.
  • Version: the version value declared by the theme author, if present.
  • Author and theme URI: attribution fields, when exposed.

The exact header may contain other fields, but do not treat every field as proof that the current site uses all of the author’s products or services. You are reading the file delivered by this site, not validating an author’s entire catalog.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the file safely

  1. Copy the theme directory from the asset URL, for example /wp-content/themes/example-theme/.
  2. Append style.css and open the resulting public address on the same host.
  3. Read the comment header at the beginning of the file.
  4. Compare the file’s directory with the path used by the page.
  5. Save the declared name, parent template and version as separate observations.

If the file returns an error, a redirect, compressed output or minified content, do not invent metadata. Mark the stylesheet confirmation as unavailable and rely on the evidence that is actually visible.

Child themes: why two theme names can both be correct

A child theme and its parent are distinct facts. The page may load assets from a child-theme directory while the child stylesheet declares a parent in its Template field. In that situation:

  • The child theme is the site’s active customization layer.
  • The parent template supplies inherited functionality or presentation.
  • The parent name does not replace the child name, and the child name does not erase the parent relationship.

Report both when the metadata exposes both. A precise report might say that the page references the example-child directory, whose stylesheet declares a theme name of “Example Child” and a parent template of example-parent. Do not call the parent the active theme unless the evidence shows that the parent directory itself is being used as the active theme.

Some sites use a custom child theme with heavily modified templates. In that case, recognizing the parent can explain inherited conventions, but it does not tell you which visual components were changed locally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Method 2: inspect loaded assets in browser developer tools

Source view shows the original response, while developer tools reveal what the browser actually requested after scripts and styles were processed. Use both when the source is sparse.

  1. Open developer tools and select the Network panel.
  2. Reload the page with the network panel open.
  3. Filter requests by CSS, then search request URLs for /wp-content/themes/.
  4. Open matching stylesheets and inspect their response text for the metadata header.
  5. Repeat with JS and other asset types if the theme path is not visible in CSS requests.

Network requests can expose a stylesheet loaded by a script or a build system even when the original HTML does not show a simple link element. They also make it easier to identify which assets came from the page you tested rather than from an unrelated snippet.

A request served from a content-delivery host may still contain the original theme path, or the path may be removed during bundling. A missing path in the network panel is therefore inconclusive.

Method 3: use a dedicated WordPress theme detector

A dedicated detector can save time by looking for publicly referenced theme stylesheets and related metadata. It is useful for a quick first pass or when you want a second reading of the same page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to use one responsibly

  1. Enter the exact page address, including the public protocol and host.
  2. Wait for the scan to finish and copy the reported theme path or stylesheet reference.
  3. Open the referenced stylesheet yourself when possible.
  4. Compare the detector’s result with the source and network evidence.
  5. Label the result as “detected from public references,” not as proof of the complete installation.

A detector’s scanner is limited by what the site exposes. Rewritten paths, bundled files, inaccessible stylesheets and aggressive caching can hide the reference it needs. A blank or generic result can mean “no usable public signal,” not “no WordPress theme.”

When a detector and source disagree

Prefer the directly exposed stylesheet metadata for the declared theme. Then explain the disagreement instead of choosing a name silently. Possible causes include:

  • The detector read a cached page while you inspected a newer response.
  • The page loads a child theme while an older asset points to the parent.
  • Several themes or old assets remain in public caches.
  • The site rewrites or bundles asset paths differently for different visitors.

Method 4: identify the broader technology stack

If the question is “What is this website built with?” a theme detector is too narrow. Use a general technology lookup that fingerprints multiple public signals. Such tools can look for clues associated with:

  • Content-management systems
  • JavaScript frameworks and libraries
  • Ecommerce functionality
  • Analytics and advertising scripts
  • Web servers, hosting and content-delivery infrastructure
  • Response headers, DOM patterns and CSS conventions

These services do not log into the site or inspect private administration screens. Their output is an interpretation of public HTML, JavaScript variables, response headers, DOM/CSS patterns and related signals.

Use the detector as a cross-check, not an authority

Record the page and date of the lookup. A result can change when a site redesigns, removes a script, switches infrastructure or serves a different cache. Generic patterns can also match more than one product. Treat a technology label as a supported clue only when the underlying signal makes sense for the page you inspected.

Manual inspection versus automated tools

Method Strongest use Limitation
Source and stylesheet inspection Confirming a theme path and reading declared stylesheet metadata Requires public signals to remain visible and some comfort with source code
Dedicated WordPress theme detector Fast lookup of a public stylesheet reference and related metadata Rewritten paths and bundled files can hide the evidence it needs
General technology lookup Finding clues about CMS, ecommerce, analytics, frameworks and infrastructure Fingerprints depend on observable patterns and broad matches can be incorrect

For the most defensible answer, use manual inspection to establish the theme and a broader lookup to describe the rest of the stack. If you can use only one approach, manual stylesheet inspection is better for a theme-specific question; a general detector is better for a broad “built with” question.

A repeatable reporting workflow

Use the following sequence when documenting a site for a client, audit or technical comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the page. Write down the exact URL and whether it is the home page, a post, a product page or another template.
  2. Check WordPress clues. Search the raw source for /wp-content/, /wp-includes/ and generator output.
  3. Extract theme paths. Record every /wp-content/themes/<slug>/ reference and the asset type containing it.
  4. Confirm the stylesheet. Open the relevant style.css and copy the declared name, parent template and version when available.
  5. Check for a child theme. Keep the child directory and parent template as separate entries.
  6. Run a stack lookup. Note technologies outside the theme’s scope and the public signal associated with each result.
  7. Resolve conflicts. Prefer direct metadata, then explain stale, hidden, bundled or contradictory signals.
  8. Write an evidence-based conclusion. State what was observed, what is probable and what cannot be established from public files.

Troubleshooting missing or contradictory results

No WordPress path appears

Check more than one page, including a page likely to use the site’s main template. Then inspect network requests for CSS and JavaScript. If no WordPress marker appears anywhere, report that no public WordPress signal was found; do not claim the site is definitely not WordPress.

The theme slug is visible but style.css is inaccessible

Report the exact slug and the asset URL you observed, but do not convert the slug into a marketing name. A blocked, removed or rewritten stylesheet prevents metadata confirmation.

The stylesheet exists but has no recognizable header

The file may be generated, minified, replaced or not be the theme’s main stylesheet. Check other assets in the same directory and compare the path used by the page. If the header remains unavailable, call the identity unconfirmed.

A detector reports a different theme

Check whether one result identifies a child theme and the other identifies its parent. Compare timestamps and page variants, then inspect the actual stylesheet metadata. If the conflict remains, publish both observations with their evidence and state that the active identity is inconclusive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The page uses bundled or content-delivery assets

Look at the original HTML, network request details and response bodies. Bundling can merge CSS from several sources and remove directory names. In that case, a missing theme path reflects transformed delivery, not proof that the site has no theme.

Only generic technologies are detected

Generic matches are weaker than a distinctive asset or header. Keep them as tentative clues and avoid presenting them as a complete stack inventory. A site can also load a technology only on a particular page, so test the page relevant to your question.

How to phrase the result accurately

A useful report separates observation from interpretation. Include:

  • The exact URL or page type checked.
  • The public path or stylesheet that supplied the clue.
  • The theme name declared in the stylesheet, if available.
  • The parent template when a child theme declares one.
  • The broader technologies detected and the public signal behind each.
  • Any limitation caused by rewriting, bundling, caching, inaccessible files or conflicting results.

For example, you can say that a page references a theme stylesheet under a particular directory and that the file declares a specific theme name. If its header also declares a parent template, list that separately. Then state that the wider stack lookup observed selected CMS, analytics or framework signals, while noting that public fingerprints do not establish every installed component.

Privacy, safety and ethical boundaries

Theme and stack detection uses publicly delivered material. Do not attempt to bypass authentication, probe private files, exploit exposed paths or treat an identified version as an invitation to attack a site. Limit your work to ordinary page requests and publicly accessible assets. If you are auditing a site you do not own, obtain permission for anything beyond passive inspection.

Be careful when publishing results about a real site. A theme name can be useful for design research or migration planning, but naming private infrastructure assumptions or unverified plugins can mislead readers and create unnecessary security risk.

What the result means for common reader questions

“How do I find out what WordPress theme a website uses?”

Find the /wp-content/themes/<slug>/ reference, open that directory’s public style.css, and read the header. Use a detector only as a convenience or cross-check.

“What is this website built with?”

Combine the stylesheet check with a general technology lookup. The first identifies the declared theme; the second can surface CMS, frameworks, ecommerce, analytics and infrastructure clues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Can I identify every plugin and backend service?”

No. Public fingerprints may expose some technologies, but private components, server configuration and plugins without visible output can remain undiscoverable.

Bottom line

The dependable path is evidence-first: inspect the page, locate the theme asset path, confirm the declaration in style.css, check for a child-theme parent, and use a broader fingerprinting tool only to expand the stack picture. A hidden or missing signal is a limitation of public evidence—not proof that WordPress or a particular theme is absent.
