Start with Shazam while the music is playing. It can listen to game audio, a gameplay video, or a replay running in another app on iPhone, iPad, and Android. If you only remember the melody, use Google’s song search to hum, whistle, or sing it for about 10–15 seconds. If you know the game, search its soundtrack and the specific level or scene, then verify the candidate against credits or an official soundtrack release.
Choose the method that matches what you still have
The fastest route depends on whether the music is available to hear again, whether you can reproduce the melody, or whether you know the game and scene. Use this decision table before trying random searches.

None of these tools has a published, game-music-specific success rate in the sources available for this guide. Treat every automatic result as a lead until the recording fits the scene and an authoritative listing supports it.

Shazam is the most direct option when you can replay the audio. Apple’s support documentation says Shazam identifies music around you and music playing in another app on iPhone, iPad, and Android. That means you can leave a game, gameplay video, or capture playing and start recognition without needing a second phone.

iPhone or iPad: use the app or Control Center
- Open the Shazam app while the game, video, or replay is ready at the musical passage.
- Start recognition, then return to the game or video if necessary. Let the clearest part of the cue play; avoid pausing immediately after the button is pressed.
- When a result appears, open it and note the title, performing artist, and recording details.
- Check the Shazam app’s saved history afterward. Apple says recognized songs are saved there.
On current iPhone and iPad software, Shazam can also be added to Control Center. Open Control Center, tap the music-recognition control, and let the audio play. Interface labels and the setup path can change with iOS or iPadOS updates, so use the current Apple instructions if the control is not present.
You can also ask Siri a question such as “What song is this?” when the music is audible. Siri’s answer is still a candidate identification; it does not prove that the track is the one used in a particular game scene.
Android: Quick Settings, notification, or Pop-up Shazam
- Prepare the game or video at the section containing the music.
- Open Shazam, or use the Shazam control in Android Quick Settings if you have added it.
- Start recognition and return to the source app. On supported setups, notification access or Pop-up Shazam lets you trigger recognition while another app remains in the foreground.
- Save the result and write down the exact recording information before leaving the scene.
Android manufacturers and software versions expose Quick Settings and notification controls differently. If a control is missing, open the Shazam app directly and replay the passage. Do not assume that a particular menu name or placement is permanent.

Make the audio easier to match
- Replay a section with melody rather than dialogue, explosions, menu clicks, or heavy sound effects.
- Use the original game audio or a clean gameplay recording instead of a phone speaker recorded from across a room.
- Try another passage from the same cue if the first section contains only ambience or percussion.
- Pause voice chat, streams, and notification sounds that could confuse the listening app.
- If the track is mixed very quietly, raise the source volume without clipping the speaker.
Apple states that Shazam “doesn’t record or store the audio it detects, and Apple has no access to audio captured on device.” That is Apple’s description of its handling of detected audio; it does not establish how a game, video service, or recording app handles its own audio.

Use Google when you remember the melody but cannot replay it
Google’s mobile song-search feature can analyze a hummed, whistled, or sung melody. It is designed for the situation in which the tune is in your head but the game is no longer available. Google describes converting the melody into a number-based sequence and comparing that sequence with song matches.
Hum, whistle, or sing for 10–15 seconds
- Open Google Search or the Google app on a phone.
- Choose the song-search option, usually represented by a music-note or “Search a song” control.
- When prompted, hum, whistle, or sing the most distinctive part of the tune for roughly 10–15 seconds. Google’s mobile guidance recommends that duration.
- Review the likely matches, then play each candidate and compare its melody, instrumentation, and tempo with your memory.
The 10–15-second guidance is not a guaranteed minimum for every device or language. Google’s product explanation was published on October 15, 2020; interface availability and supported languages can change, so follow the current prompts shown in your app.
Google presents likely matches rather than a certainty score. A close result may be a cover, a song with a similar melodic phrase, or a related recording rather than the cue used in the game.

- Hum the main contour—how the notes rise and fall—rather than trying to reproduce every ornament.
- Keep a steady tempo and repeat the same phrase instead of switching between sections.
- Try both the chorus-like hook and the opening phrase if you remember more than one part.
- Record in a quiet room and hold the phone at a consistent distance.
- Run the search again with a different phrase if the first candidates are unrelated.
Try SoundHound for a second melody search
SoundHound documents voice prompts including “What song am I humming?” and “Start a hum search.” Use it when you cannot replay the game audio or when Google returns no useful candidate. The reviewed SoundHound support material does not establish a game-soundtrack catalog, a success rate, or a universal clip length, so use it as an additional lead rather than a ranking of accuracy.

- Open SoundHound and select its voice or hum-search function.
- Follow the prompt to hum or sing the remembered phrase.
- Listen to the returned candidates, paying attention to melody and arrangement rather than title alone.
- Verify a plausible result against the game’s scene and music credits.
Running the same remembered phrase through two services can reveal a useful candidate, but agreement between apps is not conclusive if both services indexed the same incorrect or similarly titled recording.
Search by game, level, and scene
When you know the game, a catalog search can be more effective than audio recognition, especially for instrumental score cues, menu themes, and tracks mixed with sound effects.
Build a precise search query

Search the remembered scene as well as the game title. A phrase such as “forest area music” or “final boss theme” can distinguish several tracks from the same release. If the game has multiple editions, add the platform, remake year, region, or version.

Check the game’s official credits, a publisher soundtrack announcement, a digital soundtrack release, or a reliable release database. Compare the candidate’s composer or performing artist, track title, and duration with the music heard in the scene. A soundtrack album may contain tracks in a different order from the game, combine several in-game cues, or omit short ambient pieces.

SceneSong’s Google Play listing describes a tool that can identify songs through a microphone, show songs associated with games, and link to music services and stores. The listing was updated July 11, 2026. Those are the developer’s listed features, not an independent audit of recognition accuracy or catalog completeness, so check whether the specific game and release appear before relying on the result.
Verify the identification before you publish or share it
An app result answers “what recording resembles this audio?” It may not answer “what exact cue did the game use?” Verification matters because a game can use an original score, a licensed song, a remix, a regional replacement, or a different edit of a familiar track.
Use a four-part check
- Audio match: Play the candidate and compare the melody, tempo, instrumentation, vocal performance, and any distinctive transition.
- Scene match: Replay the game or video at the moment you remember. Confirm that the candidate fits the start, loop, or fade of that scene.
- Credit match: Look for the composer, performer, licensor, or track title in the game’s credits or official music documentation.
- Release match: Check an official soundtrack release or reliable release entry. Confirm whether it is the original game, a remake, downloadable content, or a regional edition.
Record the evidence you used: game and platform, scene or level, candidate title, artist or composer, and the soundtrack release that supports it. This prevents a plausible but wrong result from being repeated as fact.
What to do when no tool finds the song
A failed match does not show that the music is unidentifiable. It can mean the passage is too noisy, too short, absent from a recognition catalog, or not commercially released.

Retry with better source audio
- Return to the clearest repeat of the cue.
- Choose a segment with sustained melody and minimal dialogue or effects.
- Replay it at a normal listening level and run Shazam again.
- If you only remember the tune, hum a different phrase into Google and SoundHound.
- Search the game title and scene while the audio is fresh in your memory.
Determine what kind of music it is
- Licensed song: Search the performer, lyric fragment, or publisher soundtrack credits.
- Original score cue: Search the composer and game together; short cues may appear only in game credits or an expanded score release.
- Menu or level theme: Identify the menu, stage, hub, or location rather than searching only for “soundtrack.”
- Regional or version-specific track: Add platform, country, language, remake, remaster, or release year to the query.
- Dynamic or layered music: The game may combine stems or change the arrangement during play, so no commercial recording will match the exact in-game mix.
General recognition services do not necessarily contain every game cue, and the available evidence does not establish that SceneSong’s catalog covers every game or soundtrack release. Catalog absence is therefore not proof that the track has no title.
Understand the role of ShazamKit
ShazamKit is a developer-facing option, not a setup step for an ordinary player trying to identify one song. Apple describes it as supporting matches against the Shazam catalog or allowing developers to create a custom catalog from prerecorded audio.
A studio, archive, or rights holder with a known collection could build a catalog for its own recordings. That does not mean a custom catalog exists for a particular game, nor does it make an unidentified player’s phone automatically recognize every soundtrack cue. For personal identification, use the standard Shazam app or the melody and game-search methods above.

Privacy, permissions, and practical constraints
Recognition needs access to the device microphone or to audio routed through the supported app workflow. Review the permission prompt and revoke access later through the operating system if you no longer want it enabled. On Android, notification access or Pop-up Shazam may be required for an in-app overlay; those controls vary by manufacturer.
If the game is running on the same phone, switching apps can pause it or mute audio. In that case, use a replay, a captured video, a second device, or the game’s built-in music player if available. A second device is convenient but not required when the platform supports recognition from another app.
Headphones can prevent a phone’s microphone from hearing the game’s speakers. Use in-app audio recognition where supported, or play the passage through speakers at a clear level. Do not assume that recording a copyrighted soundtrack gives you permission to redistribute it; identification and publication rights are separate questions.
A compact workflow you can save
- Replay available: Start Shazam while the game or video plays.
- No match: Replay a cleaner, longer, more melodic section and try again.
- Melody only: Hum, whistle, or sing for about 10–15 seconds in Google Search.
- Second opinion: Run the same phrase through SoundHound.
- Game known: Search the game, soundtrack or OST, composer, and remembered scene.
- Candidate found: Compare the audio with the scene and check credits or a soundtrack release.
- Still unknown: Classify it as licensed, original, menu, dynamic, regional, or unreleased music and narrow the search accordingly.
This process produces a defensible identification without claiming that any service recognizes every video-game track.
