To connect a keyboard, match its plug to a port on your computer: first identify the connector on the keyboard, then check which compatible ports the computer actually has. If they do not match, confirm that an adapter supports both devices before buying one; connector shape alone does not establish compatibility.
Identify the keyboard’s plug and the computer’s port
- Look at the keyboard cable or receiver. Note the plug shape and size. If the keyboard is wireless, check whether it uses a separate receiver and identify that receiver’s plug.
- Inspect the computer. Find an available port and compare its shape with the keyboard plug or receiver. Do not assume a computer has a particular port based on its age or brand.
- Check the keyboard and computer documentation. Confirm that the connection method is supported before using an adapter or buying a replacement keyboard. The correct choice depends on the two specific devices.
USB keyboards are designed as human interface devices; USB-IF’s HID Version 1.11 specification includes an appendix on keyboard implementation. The USB-IF document library lists a USB Type-C Connector Specification Release 2.5 dated April 8, 2026. That specification does not tell you which connector is fitted to your keyboard or computer, so inspect both devices rather than relying on the connector name alone.
Connect the keyboard

With the computer on, plug the keyboard into a matching, available port. Avoid forcing the plug; if it does not fit easily, check that you have the correct port and orientation. Give the computer a moment to recognize the keyboard, then test a few keys in a text field. If the keyboard is not detected, try another suitable port and consult the keyboard and computer makers’ troubleshooting instructions.
Wireless keyboard with a USB receiver
Plug the receiver into a compatible port, then switch on the keyboard and follow its pairing instructions. A receiver must be the one intended for that keyboard; a port that fits physically does not prove that an unrelated receiver will work.

Wireless keyboard without a USB receiver
Follow the keyboard maker’s pairing directions and confirm that the computer supports the keyboard’s wireless connection method. The connector evidence here does not establish operating-system-specific pairing steps, so use the instructions for your exact keyboard and computer rather than assuming a universal setup path.
When the plug and port do not match
Do not buy an adapter based only on a visual resemblance or connector label. Check the exact keyboard plug, the computer port, and the adapter maker’s compatibility information. An adapter changes the physical connection; it does not by itself establish that the devices communicate correctly. If compatibility is unclear, ask the device makers or choose a keyboard with a connector supported by the computer.

Why connector standards are not installation instructions
USB-IF’s HID specification describes technical requirements for devices that implement the USB keyboard interface; for example, it says, “The keyboard must support the Idle request.” That is a device-implementation rule, not a step a user needs to perform when connecting a keyboard. The USB HID Usage Tables define keyboard usages and key names for technical interoperability, rather than telling users how to install a keyboard.
