A bread-and-butter application is software an organization depends on for essential, routine work. The phrase describes how important the software is to that organization; it is not a specific product, software category, or formal industry classification. Which applications count depends on the organization’s day-to-day operations.

What the phrase means in a software context

DevX’s glossary defines a bread-and-butter application as essential software or a system that plays a crucial role in an organization’s operations. In practical terms, a business might use the phrase for software that supports routine work, keeps information moving, or enables its primary processes. DevX’s entry was updated October 9, 2023, and presents a descriptive definition rather than a formal standard: DevX’s bread-and-butter application glossary entry.

The label is relative to the organization. A sales-led company might rely heavily on a customer relationship management (CRM) system, while another organization may depend more on accounting or office productivity software. These are examples, not a universal checklist.

Common examples and the work they support

Application type Typical work it supports
Email clients Everyday communication
Office productivity software Document, spreadsheet, and other routine office work
Accounting software Financial records and accounting tasks
CRM systems Customer and sales-related information and processes

DevX lists these as examples of essential applications. Whether any one of them is “bread and butter” depends on how central it is to a particular organization’s work.

How to tell whether an application fits the description

There is no formal test established by the glossary. As a practical reading of the phrase, ask whether the organization depends on the application for important work that happens regularly. If losing access would disrupt a primary process or routine information flow, the organization might reasonably describe it as one of its bread-and-butter applications. This is a plain-language way to apply the term, not an official classification.

DevX also says such applications may receive priority for support, maintenance, and upgrades. That is a description of how organizations may treat essential systems, not a universal requirement attached to the phrase.

How the phrase is used outside software

“Bread and butter” is a general idiom for basic or livelihood-related concerns. For example, a 2024 article about Singapore politics uses “bread-and-butter issues” for material concerns such as housing, wages, and local infrastructure; that political usage is distinct from the software meaning. See the 2024 article on Singapore political discourse.

The phrase also appears in technical writing to mean a routine or foundational application of a method. A 2005 review of fish otolith science calls determining annual age and growth a “bread and butter” application. That usage illustrates the broader idiom, not a definition of business software: the review of otolith age and growth analysis.
